The crew that came was awesome, respectful, and cleaned up their messes. Shane then came to make sure everything was copacetic. I was so impressed, that I now use them at least twice a year to service my air conditioning, mini split unit as well as my furnace. Speaking of... They always send me reminders when I am due, as I notoriously forget that maintenance which is very important. They definitely come up to the city, not sure how far west they go.

My central air conditioning crapped out on the hottest day of the year, so I called Matheny--after…read moreall, the online reviews were great, it's been around a long time, and I drive right past it nearly every day of my life. On a Friday afternoon, the technician who showed proceeded to disassemble the basement unit and ran some electrical tests, all without having me activate the thermostat. His diagnosis: The unit was in need of a new blower motor. After several minutes out at his vehicle, he came back with an estimate which included parts (which would not be ready until Monday) and labor: $794. Not in possession of such funds, I stammered that I'd weigh my options and contact them with further instructions as necessary. I was then told that either way, I'd need to pay the $90 service-call charge, the amount of which had never yet been disclosed to me, and the existence of which had scarcely been acknowledged at any time by either the technician or the receptionist who'd answered my call the previous day. The technician did NOT reassemble the unit before leaving. I spent the next few hours making calls to parts warehouses and otherwise researching what a replacement blower motor for the unit might cost to acquire elsewhere (answer: about $100 brand new, and available for immediate local pickup), and contacting people of my acquaintance who might possibly have experience with other HVAC companies/individuals who might perform the work less expensively (than $700 labor), and ended up having a friend with some experience come take a look at the unit. After running some tests wherein he actually activated the unit, he came to the alternative diagnosis that, while it was certainly POSSIBLE a new motor would be required, it was just as likely (and more so, even) that the unit merely needed a much-less-expensive, and much-more-easily-accessible, part--a capacitor. We removed the blower assembly anyway, to take with us to one of the parts stores I had called earlier, who tested the capacitor themselves and confirmed it was bad. They sold us a replacement for $3.15. Half an hour of travel to my house, 15 minutes of blower assembly removal, a 45 minute round trip to the parts store, 15 minutes of cleaning the old unit, and 15 minutes of reassembly made for two hours labor. I didn't have to wait until Monday, as Matheny would have required, either. The A/C kicked on perfectly after we re-assembled the unit. No new hundred (or more)-dollar motor was needed; just a three-dollar capacitor. Something along the way seems pretty suspicious when you're able to self-fix in half of an afternoon for $3.15 (that's THREE DOLLARS AND FIFTEEN CENTS, folks) what Matheny wanted three days and $794 ($884, assuming that the $90 I had to pay would not have been applied toward the quoted cost) to do. Again, the main part that was stated to require replacement is still perfectly functional. To reiterate and enumerate the faults of Matheny, as I experienced them: 1) They did their best to obscure the existence, or at very least the actual amount, of the $90 service-call charge, required whether they could enact the necessary repairs or not; 2) They sought to replace a significantly more expensive part than what proved to be required; 3) They did not re-assemble my furnace unit upon their departure; 4) They quoted $794 for a job that ultimately cost less than six percent of that. Saint Louis, Missouri, in the middle of July is a hot, hot place where a second without air-conditioning can feel like an eternity. Save yourself some money and get your A/C back online much more swiftly by avoiding Matheny.

The technicians were very knowledgeable, polite and respectful of the property (shoe booties and all). Not only did they know exactly the problem with the outdoor unit, they also helped set up a smart thermostat after installing the part outside. The lead tech even took the time to draw out a diagram of how our heat pump works and why we had the problem that we did. They took the time to make sure that we were satisfied with the work and we were only charged the service call fee and the cost of the part. 100% calling them again for maintenance, services and repairs (but hopefully not too soon).

Mike was my Drain Tech and he was the absolute best. Not only did he take the time to really listen to my concerns, he was empathetic as he explained to me what needed to be done. Never in my life have I been so happy about having repair work done in my home. I am really looking forward to gaining some peace of mind. Others literally just came out and did what they were asked. He was very polite and respectful while in my home, even wearing protective shoe covers. He arrived at 8:00am as scheduled and spent 2 hours completing a "Home Diagnostic Inspection" which included examining all my hot water heaters and ALL plumbing fixtures throughout my home which I was not expecting. He then presented me with a service plan at $60 per month for a maintenance plan which gave me a discount on future services (10%) and a 50% discount on the service call fee of $119.00. He also gave me a bid on replacement cost for several faucets which I felt was a little bit higher than I was willing to pay. He said I could buy my own parts but the installation charge would be higher. I told him "Thank you but no thank you". He gave me a bid for the removal and installation of the 'Insinkerator' instant hot water dispenser that I had already purchased. The bid was extremely higher than I ever expected! But, the technician was here and I wanted it done, however I only elected to have ONE faucet replaced which made the price go up! Long story short, I was charged $815.36 for the installation which took One Hour and Fifteen minutes (I provided the part). In addition to this, I was charged $119.00 for the service call fee! I paid a total of $934.36 and 2/3 of the time he was here was spent on trying to sell me a service plan for my plumbing, H-Vac system as well as my electrical needs for $60 A MONTH! Then, you get a whopping 10% discount on the service call fee! I calculated that this service call was $12.47 per minute! I contacted the company customer service representative to talk about what I thought was an extremely high charge and all she could offer was that they have to pay for gas, tools and expenses! She also reminded me that I signed and agreed to the bid (she told me this 5 times). I told her I DID agree that that was their bid and I paid it! I did not agree that it was a fair price but I did not want to confront the young technician. I called HER to discuss the issue, to see if she thought that $934.36 for 1 hour and 15 minutes labor was fair. She did! Call this company if you have money to burn but you will get your work done politely.
