I was really pleased by the process for getting our AC replaced. Matt worked with me on a bid for the new unit in October, and spoke intelligently about the options, where other companies did not seem as educated on the components. This bid was actually less than the competitors, and they had not been around as long as Harster! It was an easy choice. We scheduled to do the replacement in January. Jim and his team came out to do the install and addressed some additional needs to increase the air flow, make the existing unit up to proper code, and make the filter track so it fit filters appropriately. The last unit installation I'm sure was a DIY job or done by a less qualified company. Jim addressed all those issues. Harster was to come do do yearly maintenance on our air conditioning unit. The tech came in told us that we were 2 lbs low on freon. 20 min later he came and said we need a whole new unit. 2nd guy came out said our air conditioning is fine and that we need a new coil. 3rd guy came out and $1675 later we have a new coil and now our air conditioner is freezing and its 80 degrees in our house. The 4th guy come out he said that it's our furnace that needs to be cleaned so another $114 an hour. Nothing was wrong with our air this was an annual cleaning the first guy did something and they will not take responsibility for it. The 3rd guy told us that they put way to much freon in the unit. read more

My furnace stopped working and I called Harster after reading the other reviews on Yelp. The receptionist was very nice and she had a technician out in less than 2 hours. I ended up needing a new system, but two of the nicest and most informative technicians came out the very next day and completed the work. Our electric furnace had been tripping the circuit breaker several times over a week long period, with no other load on the circuit. We called Harster to determine whether there was a problem with the unit. Jim from Harster came out within 2 hours and thoroughly tested the conductivity on all the interior components and wiring. I called this company to look over a recent installation by another AC company. The problem was that our 3rd floor was always hot, summer and winter, and Jim figured out that the ductwork was way too long and would NEVER cool the rooms as intended. He drew out a plan and I tentatively scheduled it for spring. I also had him look at the furnace that took care of the 1st and 2nd floors as I knew they were at the end of their life, as well. Jim gave me an estimate for its replacement. Lo and behold, the furnace gave up the ghost and I had Harster replace one furnace and redo the ducting for the other! It was a solid week's work. It was a very good move when I called the "Harster HVAC" company, recently. They were the only HVAC company I communicated with who agreed to come out (met the realtor there), and diagnosed that the gas heater had a "wire in the wrong position" and corrected it, easily. This is for a house that I am the potential buyer for. As a direct result, the house now has heat, a Radon test can be performed properly (house inspector said the house can not be cold); but, more importantly, ... it was one less worry that there might possibly have been something major wrong with the heater's condition, as far as one's expense projections go. I will call this company in the future and do recommend them to especially if you are also looking into purchasing any home in St. Louis County. read more

Highly recommend! From the phone call to the actual service, and follow-up, this company is as professional and knowledgeable as they come! I called around to a few companies before choosing and their flat rate for the initial visit was a bit cheaper than most. The woman on the phone was polite. So we went with them and we are very glad we did. They came out for the initial visit and then another visit to finish the job...all within the same week. Unethical, unprofessional, charges were astronomical!!! Had a gas leak that was not fixed and the charge was $591!!! I am single and work 55 hours a week and could not be at my home to supervise their work. They claimed that every part of the gas line needed to be adjusted when the leak was actually coming from the inside of the gas range, as discovered within 20 minutes by Laclede Gas. I never once was warned about the charge and they required a credit card to come to the home. Then they had the audacity to charge my card and not even communicate anything about the work. I found out the issue wasn't resolved by a Laclede Gas inspection and then was sent a receipt in the mail for $591!!! I will report them to the BBB. Do NOT use them!! read more

Excellent company! Service techs are all very knowledgeable and friendly. Had them come out to repair a faulty AC unit. They determined the problem in no time and (here's the kicker) they went the extra mile to determine that the malfunctioning part was under warranty. I called Harster this morning, before their posted hours. I assumed I was going to get a machine and leave a message, but a very courteous woman answered and helped me get an appointment for the same day. It was a hot, HOT day and my air conditioner was blowing air that was NOT the cool air you want on a day like this. She said they'd call before noon when they were on their way. Only a half an hour later, a technician, Jerry, was out at the house. He was very helpful and knowledgeable, and explained to me what was going on, plus asked questions to help him diagnose the issue. Well it's no joke my AC went out today my AC was made in 1968 and lasted a long time. I watched as the Harster repairman tried everything he could think of to keep my old AC going but I could see it for myself the compressor was dead. So nice try but it's time to replace it. I was so impressed by the effort he put into trying to save my old unit I had to buy my new unit from his company. Now did he try to sell me something I did not need? No! I was impressed again! He sat with me explained what I needed and why I needed it. Impressed again with facts not just a sales pitch. Well my new unit is installed and he was right it works great. The crew they sent to install it amazed me great guys who really know what they are doing and had fun joking around with me as I watched them work. Nothing fake about them at all flat out good guys who do the job right! You have no choice in the matter you will like the team they send to you. Our former HVAC guy retired, so we had to find someone else to perform routine maintenance on our 2 systems. Harster answered the phone (live!), and they happened to have a tech available. He arrived in 30 minutes and spent a couple of hours inspecting and cleaning. The price was very reasonable, Dan was professional, and shared that he had worked for Harster for 22 years. I got back from NYC today turned on my thermostat only to have cold air blowing on my face (it was 41 degrees outside today). I did my own troubleshooting, but it was clear that the heating element on my furnace was out as the power, gas, and fan were all working. I called Harster after seeing the reviews on Yelp at 10:00 AM, and a courteous serviceman was at my door at 11:00 AM. He showed me around my furnace, what went where, gave me tips on my filters (and how to save money on them), and had a new element in and running 25 minutes later. They do good work, no question about it. But my problem is thy came to my house to fix my AC. Spent 5 min looking at it and told me the 24 year old unit was dead. That's expected and I agreed. So I purchased a new $3,000 system and then they charged me $70 for the guy who told me it was broken. Okay I understand the fee if I don't spend $3,000 at your shop. But if I'm willing to spend that amount of money with you the least you can do is wave the fee. It was just something thy we hung onto. The bad part of that experience is what we think about now when we think of harsters. read more
