    Heights House - Dining room

    Heights House

Montfort Hall, originally owned by William Montfort Boylan and changing hands several times since…read morehas been fully restored into one gorgeous boutique hotel and event space. The centerpiece of the house's interior is a rotunda supported by four Corinthian columns and lit by a stained glass window located on the roof. Walking into the foyer you cant help but embrace the timeless grace, where every corner whispers of history and a bygone era. There is a quiet serenity to the space, as if time slows just a little bit inside. The modern touch added to the old renovated mansion does come with a bit of a sharp, sterile elegance of a modern mansion. The Parlor is a great place to enjoy a delicious craft cocktail and even better, ADULTS ONLY! There are also many other lovely seating arrangements throughout the property, including outdoors, and a few even come with fire pits. Regardless of your intentions for visiting the Heights House, I am quite confident there will be no disappointments, unless they have a private event. Cheers!

Everything is lovely and though it is all modern and sleek, it still feels fitting for the original era of the house. The cocktail area takes up most of the main floor, with a stand-up bar just off the entryway with a few tables and then a larger lounging area with sofas and chairs just beyond. The drinks are exceptionally good, and the spirits menu is creative. They also offer a few small plates. There is plenty of paved parking immediately next to the hotel for guests only, so that is not a hassle as it can be at some B&B/inn-type establishments. At check-in, you are offered a complimentary glass of sparkling wine to set the tone. The rooms are comfortable, but I will say that the entry-level ones are quite small (which is apparent on the website), but for the rates charged there isn't even a place to sit and read a book other than the bed. There's one small, delicate wicker chair that would be for tying shoes or whatever, but not lounging. The bed is luxuriously dressed, and there is drawer space and a minifridge, but no closet -- hanging items can go on hooks by the door out in the open. The bathroom is spacious enough, with a broad sink and elegant tilework. The lighting fixtures throughout are nifty. I found the breakfast sort of average for this type of place. I came later on, so perhaps there is more earlier, but there were a few pastries, some hard-boiled eggs, and fruit when I arrived. There's also a fancy coffee-drink contraption, but those aren't my thing so I left that alone. It's a very easy walk across the Boylan Bridge and down a couple of blocks to the area of the Dillon with several restaurants, and the performing arts center is not far beyond that. Location-wise, there's plenty that's walkable but also more an easy drive away.

Jessica greeted us in the parking lot outside and showed us inside and gave us the grand tour. Our room was the largest one- with the biggest bathroom too and just inside the front door. Perfect for us! Across from our room was the sitting room where her father (who was visiting) was working on a puzzle. The father greeted us warmly and said we could help with the puzzle if we would like. Noted*, there was a small hall way with stairs going up to the other rooms, and half bath & into the dining sun room. This is where breakfasts would be, coffee, tea and snacks were available whenever you wanted and the house was simply charming. There was a formal dining room too- I loved the antiques and historic quality in the decor. Jessica and her husband bought the Duck Smith House a couple years ago and they were both very generous with any help and information. I did partake in the puzzle and helped finish it. The breakfasts were simply delightful! Our first morning, she made apple sourdough pancakes that were an inch thick (at least)! And the bacon!!! Day two was quiche- one of my favorites and day three was waffles with stewed apples. I overheard Jessica telling someone else that she tries to rotate between sweet and savory for breakfast. John and I also enjoyed all the kitties, the goats- I fed them some grapes! and I loved the pumpkin patch they had set up for the weekend! John even went out to Justin's model shop. I hope I get to stay here again, because I absolutely loved it!!!

I have been here more than home since then and it is now October 1st! I have stayed in every room and have liked all of them. My favorite is Bertie's Room as it has a nice big bathtub. Every day I am here I feel like a welcome guest. After a restful sleep I awake to a lovely breakfast. Marcia is a gracious hostess and works very had and I feel very welcomed. In this crazy time with the pandemic still raging it is so nice to have DuckSmith to come home to

From the moment you walk through the door, you are welcomed by some of the friendliest, most accommodating, and genuinely lovely people imaginable. There was never a moment where they didn't go out of their way to help make our stay comfortable and memorable. Ray, especially, was exceptional. He was there every day making sure everything was perfect and continually went above and beyond to make our stay feel special and personal. The Manor itself is absolutely charming -- creative, warm, and filled with character. Everywhere you looked was a feast for the eyes, with thoughtful details and beautiful touches throughout. Now that my niece has graduated, we technically have no reason to visit High Point anymore -- but honestly, a return trip would be worth it just for another stay at the Manor. It felt less like staying somewhere and more like being part of something truly special.

The sound of the pretty fountain out front and of finches and other birds around the grounds is transportive as is the lobby's wallpaper, the loveliest textured bird pattern. Delicious chocolates greeted me upon arrival in my room, and tasty granola bars that appeared to be hand-made were provided to grab on my way out. So many little touches like that made Pandora's exceptional, and I wish that beautiful Manor another hundred years!
