Not sure what has happened to this place (hoping this was just a bad day). Overgrown areas with weeds and rusting "art" that appears broken and dilapidated in what used to be eccentric outdoor area. Weird rusting storage units in the yard that we guessed at one point were for rent as part of a B and B. Food was ok but super greasy with butter or oil pooling around the eggs and potatoes. Very strange vibe to the place with tension pretty apparent between owners or managers with one of the managers or owners talking under his breath about one of the other people (waitress or other owner) to no one in particular, but loud enough people could hear him - using some descriptive language as to what he thought of them. Service was fine when approaching us and at the ordering counter, actually fairly pleasant. This place used to be a cool little quirky cafe, but our time recently was not worth the mood we left with. Everyone has had a bad day or days, especially in this service industry economy, but insulting other workers/owners/managers in front of customers is uncalled for. Hopefully things improve in this space. read more

I don't know what happened with yall (new owner? Chef? Something?) but your prices are exponentially high for the food -and quality you get I swear the sandwiches we had today were laughable. I paid $37.00 with tip for this joke of a lunch. The taste wasn't even good. The chicken sandwich was about a quarter of a chicken breast marinated but there was so much mustard on it-that's all you could taste.. The meted tuna sandwich was worse. The sandwich was greasy with hard fried cheese edges. How can you call this a melted tuna sandwich? Trust me I eat at restaurants all the time-and really good ones too-and was hoping you wouldn't change Sorry we used to love you guys but the past couple of trips have been on this level. First thing to note: Reservations are highly recommended, or expect a wait. Especially for brunch. This cute cafe is in - what looks like - a cozy bungalow -style home that has a large patio courtyard, playground for the littles, and a few bnb container homes. When the beau lived in this area, it was one of his favorite brunch spots that's known for their lemon ricotta pancakes and "THE" grilled cheese sandwich. I opted for the quiche of the day (not the greatest, the quiche could have used a lot more ingredients, like herbs or spice).; and the beau got the grilled cheese AND the quiche of the day. We topped it off with a bottle of champs and a side of a three-juice flight (pineapple, OJ, and a mystery juice I can't remember). Oh, and a turkish coffee! read more

So this past Saturday, my family and I were in the Pittsboro area and starving. This place has some solid reviews and is just beautiful. When we got there the kitchen was resetting and we had a bit of a wait, but it was so worth it. We had some refreshments and just enjoyed the atmosphere. My son inhaled a piece of strawberry cake. Definitely a great and cozy place for brunch. It reminds me of a breakfast place in Asheville, I use to love. The only think missing was them greeting you with namaste, lol. You do have to bus your own table and get your own water and coffee, so worth it. read more

Excellent brunch. My wife and I found this new little cafe after it showed up on Yelp. Tried the Small B&B cafe for lunch today. I had deviled egg sandwich on sourdough and split English pea soup. They toasted the sourdough just right. Both were 5 stars. My wife had the half order tench toast and her favorite bacon week done. Some people would say burn bacon. But, it was perfect and she ate the entire plate of food. We will definitely go back to try the other items in the menu. read more

I love this cafe!! My boyfriend and I have visited a couple of times but I think about it A LOT. Their outdoor space (pictured) is very lovely and cozy. I love the idea of their "Brunch around the World" menu, not to mention their commitment to local food and ZERO food waste! They have great values and a commitment to quality food. Never got our food . Checked on the status after waiting one hour and we were told 20 more minutes 20 minutes later we checked on the status and we're told 30 minutes. Asked for a refund and still waiting on the refund. I don't recommend this place because it's totally understandable to have a bad day. I love the outdoor seating and shady beautiful garden. I had the ricotta pancakes and they were drier than chip board. My daughter had the ricotta waffles and they were amazing. Over cooked pancakes my guess. NO.. breakfast plate will come with bacon, to cater to the vegetarians! My guess is that you have more meat eaters then vegetarians. That irks me. So, you'll have to get a side order of bacon and pay extra. New age vibe inside mixed with cute farmy decor. Friendly service. read more

Small is a charming backyard cafe in Pitsboro (as in, yes...you dine in the backyard surrounded by a beautiful garden, if you want). We had the eggs Benedict and shared a half order of the lemon ricotta pancakes. We both agreed this one one of the best brunches we've had in NC!! And the Turkish coffee, served with a morsel of Turkish delight was, well, an absolute delight indeed. Shame we live an hour away, or this would definitely be our go-to Sunday brunch spot. As it is, we plan on coming back to Pitsboro, so you can believe we'll be back! read more

Little, hidden unpretentious cafe off of East Street. Reminded me of someone's backyard in Berkeley. An array of tables and seating outside, which seems to be making small businesses these days. The menu is limited, so you know the food they put out will be good. We arrived about 15 minutes after opening for brekkie, and most tables were already taken, so this place definitely has a following. The lemon ricotta pancakes light and fluffy, husband said they didn't even need syrup. Corned beef hash delicious with eggs any style. Chai tasted house made. Another addition which was very noticeable, that people were quietly talking, respectful of those around them. Nice vibe here. Even though it's 20 minutes down the road, this may be my new breakfast place. Well worth the drive down. read more

This restaurant used to be absolutely outstanding, but then it was sold to new owners and it has gone downhill fast. In the past, we would come here every weekend for breakfast as a culinary treat. Since the new ownership occurred we've been here three times and all three times have been seriously subpar not only in food quality, but in service and even appearance. Today was their last chance and they blew it. We ordered two lemon ricotta pancake plates. In the past they were melt-in-your-mouth and coveted by us regular customers, which caused them to sell out. We'd spend about $80 per week eating here with our family of four. Today one entire pancake plate was served burnt. Literally burnt and black. The other pancake plate was fine and edible. My pancakes weren't edible at all so I brought them back to the kitchen to be remade. We also ordered two scones. One scone was undercooked--doughy. The other one had way too much salt and not good at all. Still hopeful after I dropped my burned pancakes off to the cashier, I came back in with my empty coffee cups to refill. At that point I was told that they were out of lemon ricotta pancakes and they were making me French toast. I had no food replacement choice apparently. I asked for the owner. The owner's name is Lisa--as was the last owner. Don't let that confuse you. This Lisa was rude and didn't apologize for them serving me burned food and poor scones. Instead she flat out told me they're making me French Toast. I told her that I came for lemon ricotta pancakes, but mine were burned and should've never been served to me, to which she reiterated that they had run out, just like the previous owner would run out and that she's substituting the French toast. I said "no" on the French toast. She carelessly shrugged. "Then you can have something else on the menu." She yelled to the cook to cancel the French toast. She said she didn't know what else to tell me. I asked for a refund, she agreed, turned and left me standing there without another word. I really miss the original Lisa. She was a wonderful chef, recipe creator, hostess, manager, and with a creative energy that permeated the entire restaurant. The experience was wonderful, which kept us returning time and time again. Bed. The "bed" part of Small B&B has been nearly overlooked. There are 43 reviews for the Small B&B Café (as of today) and only nine of them make mention of the overnight stay part of the venue. Quirky. I can think of no other word for this place. With only three rooms (two rooms and a guest house, actually) available for overnight guests, the Guest House, the Woodshed and the Treehouse, Small B&B proudly shows -- with a vengeance even -- the concept of "repurposing". The building, the décor in the rooms, the garden sitting room are built and decorated with materials from something else. Both the Treehouse and the Woodshed, in their former lives, were part of an art gallery. The Treehouse, despite its name and being the tallest building, is on one floor. It's named for the tree carving on the wall extending to the second story. The bathroom in the Treehouse is nearly the same size as the room and is separated by a large sliding door that reminds me of a barn door, but with fish shaped carvings The walls in the bathroom and shower are old tiles, and although the showerhead is modern, it reminded me of an old school gym shower - only less grungy. If you're claustrophobic, or have a big dog, the Treehouse is not the best room choice. The Woodshed, about the size and shape of a small mobile home, has more space. There's a small loveseat, a queen bed, and the same style of wall decoration as in the Woodshed, but placed horizontally rather than vertically. The garden sitting room offers an escape from the sun but still in the outside air. Unlike the rooms, this spot has plaques on the wall explaining the origin of the materials. It's a pet-friendly B&B and a couple of short blocks away from the circle and the shops on Hillsboro. There are no televisions, radios, or clocks -- at least in the two rooms in which I stayed -- but the wireless worked really well. For a getaway where you won't be spending time in the room, or where you want some quiet to get away from the electronics, Small B&B can deliver. There are plenty of blankets and pillows for the asking; the rooms have their own heat/ac unit. The owners and staff couldn't be nicer. As part of its environmentally friendly spin, there are multi-use bottles of shampoo and conditioner in the shower, and disposable makeup remover towels to minimize the wear and tear on the face towels and keep costs down. I guess that might be a cheaper option. Small B&B is full of repurposed things, and for the adventurous, a change of pace. Moreover, in B&B fashion, it comes with breakfast from the much-reviewed locally-sourced-food Café next door. How awesome is that? read more

This excellent little restaurant is halfway between my children's houses in Durham and our house in Asheboro, so we have eaten there many times. I have also met business colleagues there, and we have enjoyed collaborating under the big trees. The cafe IS small, and has the charm of a chalkboard menu, and there are also some items that they serve every day which are on a more permanent menu. The coffee and tea are good, and they also have a few somewhat more exotic (nonalcoholic) juice beverages that I have enjoyed. I like to inspect their chalkboard specials first, and if nothing enchants me, I just get the quiche, because it has always been good, but it does all get taken if I'm not early. If the weather is nice, we usually eat outside at one of the charming picnic tables. Dogs are welcome there, and it is shady. There is also a little art museum and some play equipment for the kids! I recommend this place! The parking lot is small, but adequate. You go inside to order, they bring out the food on regular (not paper) dishes, and you bus your own table to a bus pan near the cafe entrance. For me at least, it's a total win. Five stars. If you are looking to support or try local NC farm to fork restaurants, the Small B&B needs to be on your list. Most ingredients are locally sourced and the owners can often be found visiting the local farmer's markets. Much of the construction here is "upcycled", or crafted up from recycled products. Of course, this makes the atmosphere completely unique and funky or artistic. I have always found the service to be great. If you're new and not sure what to get, try the lemon ricotta hotcakes, which are awesome. If you don't like them, it is your tongue's fault. For lunches I just grab whatever the special is, and most recently that was a very tasty Bánh mì. The pricing is very reasonable to the high quality food served. If you are new, be careful of the hours. read more

We found this place through friends and loved it. We went to Pittsboro for the weekend and stayed at one of the little houses behind the cafe. The inside of the cafe is small and gets full quickly but there is plenty of room outside and it's filled with folk art. I had the lemon ricotta pancakes, bacon and chai tea. They did say that the chef was away and they were not serving eggs Benedict so perhaps the absence of the chef was related to the quality of the food. This is one of my favorite places to eat in Pittsboro. Dave and Lisa 'get' good food and do it well! When I want an awesome poached egg, this is the place! They are great with any number of their daily wildcard specials. Corned beef hash is awesome but so is the breakfast sandwich on naan. Their bacon is amazing! Desserts are awesome, especially the chocolate cake, if you are lucky enough for it to be available when you visit, however about any dessert that is in the case will be enjoyable. If you are looking for huge portions this isn't your place, but if you are looking for yummy, locally sourced, creative food that makes you smile, give the Small a try! We've also stayed at the Guest Cottage and it is a wonderful place to stay; besides, you get breakfast--what's not to like?! read more

I drove today from Chapel Hill to Pittsboro to enjoy the weather and being out of the house, and also to treat myself to lunch--distanced & outside--at the Small B&B Café. It was well worth the trip: The food was really good. The service was pleasant, patient and observant. But what ultimately made me really want to return was the chocolate chip coconut scone they so graciously gave me with my check. After the waitress walked away, I took a bite . . . just to try it ; ). And I was immediately transported to my mama's kitchen--my papa's, too! Mama was a world class southern cook. Everything she baked was heavenly, especially her pie crust, cookies, and breads. And Papa made the best cornbread I've ever had. Husband and I arrived around noon on Mother's Day, and didn't receive our food until 2:30. We overhead them saying that they were "busier than normal"; however, no one ever came to check on us or give us an update on how much longer we should expect to wait. We were getting concerned when no one around us seemed to have food either. When we finally got our food the server said, "You chose the right time to come". My husband replied "Actually we've been sitting here for over 2 hours". We weren't offered any sort of apology for the long wait on our order. A sincere apology or some sort of compensation would have been much appreciated; however neither were offered. Instead, we felt like no one cared about us or the fact that we waited for so long. I wish they had been transparent about the wait time to begin with when we ordered our food. If we had know it was going to be a 2 hour wait we would have just gone somewhere else to eat. Needless to say, we don't plan on coming back. read more
