We had a great stay at this location. The staff at the front desk were super friendly and helpful. We appreciated the list of staff recommendations they printed for us with all kinds of food places and things to do. Our room was spacious, clean, and the views were great. We were able to walk everywhere. We'll definitely stay there again! Of note: their TVs are not smart TVs. We were planning to use a streaming account to watch movies one night, but that wasn't an option.

I love this funky little place. I've been coming here for years - summer and winter. I've brought my daughters here, and now my granddaughters. Not only are you right on the water; listening to the waves at night, but 20 steps from the inn you're on Sunset Cliffs - a remarkable stretch of scenery. Each evening we walk over with a "sundowner" cocktail and - along with the locals - watch the sun set. It is an older property, but don't let that fool you - it is clean and the service is 5 star. And if you like flowers, the grounds are amazing. Their staff are so attentive from finding a pair of binoculars so you can watch for dolphins, to providing aloe vera gel after a sun burn. Last night, my granddaughters and I sat outside enjoying our last night here. The lovely young man at the desk came out and asked if we'd like a little bonfire. He brought out a portable fire pit and even brought the fixings for s-mores. Thank you making such wonderful memories. Perhaps I'll be back. With great grandchildren.

The pelicans came from no were and covered the water!!!

This is a cozy, family friendly Inn! We will be back . The views were breath taken. Very clean and away from the hustle but just walking distance to restaurants and shops if you want them. Gavin and the staff were amazing !!

Peaceful, beautiful and relaxing experience! Allie gave me the best service ever and she knew it was my birthday so she really made my experience extra special! I am a local but this was my staycation and just WOW!!

Quaint, clean rooms situated right on the ocean. Lovely pool area with chairs to hang out and enjoy the views. Would 100% stay here again

cool old school beach hotel vibe, awesome view of the ocean! I am giving this business a four-star review because the service was first class and the location was incredible. There are definitely some two and three star parts to this hotel though. Two stars for the mattresses. They were as hard as a rock and very uncomfortable. I would also give the HVAC two stars because only one room got any benefit from the air conditioning luckily it was a fairly cool day and it was not an issue. I might have to say the bathroom was a one star. The actual commode might have been one of the smallest toilets I have ever seen. An older person would definitely have a problem getting on and off of it. The swimming pool and patio area were incredible. I could have spent my entire trip sitting back there drinking coffee and just taking in the view. Even with the significant deficiencies I would definitely recommend this hotel and will be back.

This was the glob of hair that fell out of the towel I was using. It was about quarter-sized.

Our experience at Sunset Cliffs Inn was one of the most disappointing hotel stays we've ever had. What started as an inconvenient night turned into an outright unacceptable series of events that left us certain we will never return--and neither will anyone we know. First, the heating in our room was completely nonfunctional. Despite contacting the front desk, their attempt to solve the issue--a broken space heater--fell flat. Instead, they brought us extra bedding, but when we went to bed we discovered it was a mismatched combination of one comforter and a mattress pad. We tried to make the best of it, but the room remained freezing throughout the night and in the morning. In the morning, things took a turn for the worse. While getting ready to leave, I used a towel provided in the room only to have a giant ball of black hair fall out of it. It was disgusting and completely unacceptable for a hotel charging $300 a night. When we checked out, we shared our complaints with the front desk. The young woman working there was wonderful, sympathetic, apologetic, and initially offered to comp the room entirely. Her approach to customer service was great, and we left feeling that, despite everything, the effort to make things right might bring us back to try again in the future. As we returned to our cars in the parking area, we noticed toenail and fingernail clippings littering the ground next to our vehicle in their parking area which was also gross but we were willing to disregard. But the final insult came when we received a call on our way home. The same front desk employee who had promised to comp our stay called back, embarrassed and apologetic, to inform us that her manager had overruled her decision. Instead of a full refund, we were only offered a 50% discount. This sudden retraction felt like a slap in the face. Initially, we were willing to give the hotel another chance, but this bait-and-switch tactic sealed the deal--we will never stay here again. As locals, we frequently recommend accommodations to both to local and visiting friends and family. Sunset Cliffs Inn has lost not only our business but the trust and business of everyone we could have referred. This experience was beyond disappointing, and I would caution anyone considering staying here to think twice. Subpar maintenance, poor cleanliness, and unreliable customer service should never be part of a $300 hotel stay. Sunset Cliffs Inn failed on all fronts.

Just know... you are paying for the location. The room has no frills but it's clean. There's nothing like this inn- literally cliffside at what has always been, 100%, my most favorite spot in all of San Diego. This Inn has been around a long time and if you judge whether or not you'll stay based on the look of the building itself, you'd be making a mistake I think. I also think the only way to go if you DO stay, is to get the King Suite. That room is the most private and has its own window view to the ocean. To wake up like that was worth all the $$$.

We rented out the Inn at Sunset Cliffs for our wedding weekend 10/14/2023 from Friday to Sunday. Gina and Gavin plus the entire Inn at Sunset Cliffs family truly went above and beyond to help us have the most incredible wedding. From the planning stages early on, Gina helped us with vendor recommendations, staying on track with planning tasks, and building our day of timeline. She provided endless support and kept things organized throughout the entire process and especially throughout the wedding day. Being able to have all our friends and family stay onsite through the entire wedding weekend created the most intimate and memorable weekend. We hosted our wedding welcome event in the pool area the day before our wedding. The ceremony was held on the cliffs just south of the Inn with stunning views. Our reception was held on the property looking out onto the ocean. Being along the cliffs meant we got to have some of the most stunning ocean sunsets in October which made for the most amazing wedding photos. My now husband had the luxury of staying in the Presidential suite with the most stunning ocean views to wake up to on our wedding day. The property of the Inn is meticulously gardened with the most gorgeous rose bushes and landscaping. The Inn provided such a warm, inviting space to celebrate with our families and created everything we could have dreamed of for our wedding day. Even now over a year after our wedding we are still hearing from our family and friends how much they loved our wedding and staying at the Inn. We love that as San Diego locals we can walk along the cliffs now, pass by the Inn and always remember our wedding day! The Inn at Sunset Cliffs will always hold such a special place in our hearts and we can't wait to come back and stay for future anniversaries. Can't recommend more as a place to stay or host your wedding day!

We had such an incredible weekend at Inn at Sunset Cliffs! It is such a dreamy location and the service is above and beyond. What can be better than evenings filled with live music, mini putt-putt challenges, and a staff that treats you like family? This place does it all and then some! Shout out to Gavin and the crew for making this weekend so special! we will absolutely be back!!

We have been meaning to write this review for almost a year and it is LONG overdue. We had our DREAM wedding at the Inn at Sunset Cliffs. Almost a year later, we still hear from family and friends how it was one of the best weddings they have ever been to. We got married last October and had ~80 of our family and friends stay for the weekend at the Inn. The Inn was beautiful, cozy, welcoming, and just perfect for everyone to stay. Getting married just a block down from the Inn was gorgeous and made everything convenient. We also loved how we could pick out caterers and have everything in one place. The staff was also wonderful. We worked with Gina and Gavin before the wedding and they made everything a breeze. Gina was just the best at making sure things went smoothly and great suggestions along the planning process as well. The front desk staff were AMAZING as well, and truly felt like they were there to celebrate our marriage as well. The flexibility of the venue was right up our style and we could not be more thankful. THANK YOU INN AT SUNSET CLIFFS (sorry this review is so late). You made our dreams come true :) ~ Jess & Omeed

I am so happy I found this place via AARP! Located in the heart of the Gaslamp District, I had never heard of this hotel prior to searching. Upon checking in, the desk clerk was very friendly, efficient, and answered any questions that I had. As for the room, he put us up on the top (4th) floor. Room is the perfect size for two people. Very clean, warm, inviting, and has some really cute and convenient amenities such as a pineapple themed USB quad port at the desk, along with a Keurig machine (had I known that I'd have brought my own Starbucks K-cups)! The bed was nice and comfy with lots of soft but supportive pillows and two separate comforter blankets so you're not fighting for covers if you are sharing the bed with someone or your significant other. Bathroom is very modern and clean. A hairdryer is hanging in the bathroom as well. The only item missing was an iron and an ironing board; however, you can request that at the front desk. If you are looking for a hotel with a gym, laundry facilities on site, and a full breakfast buffet or continental breakfast, then this place is not for you; however, if those things don't matter to you {I typically look for those types of hotels during a longer stay) then this hotel is all you need. You also get other unexpected creature comforts such as Starbucks coffee in the lounge along with 4 different blends of water as well as these cute pineapple cookies in the afternoon. Based in Seattle, WA, I am so happy I found this chain as I will be on the lookout and consider staying in other cities. Parking is available in a garage connected to the hotel next door for a fee. Also, bikes are available in the lobby for getting around (not sure if gratis or for a fee). I definitely recommend staying here! One small recommendation for the hotel: provide rooms with a small microwave and mini fridge to reheat leftovers. It all worked out as I gave a homeless guy mine.

Alan, the manager, went above and beyond in every way. Our first interaction with him set the tone for the entire stay: kind, attentive, and incredibly accommodating. The lobby was cozy and inviting, with games to play, coffee and water available, and--most surprisingly--a welcome drink! We've stayed at many boutique hotels, but this one truly takes the cake. While we didn't bring our pup this time, it was clear she would have been so well cared for here. We will absolutely be back and will be recommending this hotel to all of our friends.

He remembered us throughout our weekend, which was a big plus in my book. While the lobby may not be as expansive as some other high-end hotels, my focus wasn't on lounging around there. I get that some reviewers might expect more amenities, but this is Downtown San Diego. The design and structure fit perfectly with the surroundings, and I personally appreciate a place that keeps the riff-raff at bay. Once we checked into our room, I found the space thoughtfully designed, and the staff promptly addressed the minor issues we encountered. Though the hotel doesn't boast a massive pool, located on the 3rd floor, the staff provided excellent food and beverage service. The gym, overlooking the pool, was well-equipped for a proper workout, and I was pleased to find that the equipment was in good condition and saw little use. The hotel's restaurants offered delicious meals, making dining a pleasure. Cathryn, with her crossed key pins, was an outstanding concierge. She provided invaluable advice on local beach spots and dining options. After making a poor Yelp choice, she came to my rescue, finding great restaurants in both the Gaslamp Quarter and Little Italy that suited our specific preferences. If you're looking for a full-service hotel experience, I highly recommend checking out The Pendry. It is a full-service hotel, so please be kind and tip the staff.

One small gripe: We were locked out of our room probably because we requested late check out and tried getting in after 11am (something needs to be done to prevent this, it was annoying). The valet parking was around $70 so we found a parking lot a few blocks away. The walk wasn't bad so a good alternative. The location is close to the convention center and stadium, but if you're not coming to SD for those places, I wouldn't say this is a central location. I booked through Chase Sapphire Reserve The Edit and got the following perks: 1. Upgrade to higher floor room 2. Amenity (a box of chocolates) 3. $100 credit (used on lunch at Provisional Kitchen) 4. $60 breakfast credit (used at Provisional Kitchen) 5. Early check in (got in at 1:30pm); late check out (12:30pm) Honestly a good stay but without those perks, I'd rather book elsewhere not in downtown with options for parking.

I eventually spoke with Vee, who handled my call regarding the overcharge. What was most frustrating was that the error was made by the hotel, yet there was little effort to compensate for the inconvenience. As a courtesy, I felt the hotel could have waived the third night's parking charge given the time and effort I had to spend resolving a mistake that wasn't mine. My time is valuable, and having to dedicate part of my evening to fixing a billing error left me feeling that guest satisfaction was not a priority.
