Our stay at Scripps Inn was wonderful! The location is unbeatable--directly across from the ocean and within easy walking distance of so many great restaurants and attractions, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, the tide pools, and The Cave Store. Having on-site parking was a huge bonus, and at $20 per night it was well worth the convenience of parking just steps from our room. The staff (specifically Maritza) was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating, making us feel welcome throughout our stay. The only real drawbacks were related to the building itself. We stayed on the ground floor (Room 5), and noise from the room above was very noticeable. Even normal walking could be heard clearly, and footsteps and doors closing carried through the ceiling enough to disturb our sleep. We later had different guests above us and experienced the same thing, so it seems to be more of a sound insulation issue than inconsiderate guests. Another inconvenience was the lack of electrical outlets. There were only two outlets in the main room, and half of one didn't work. We ended up using the third outlet in the bathroom to charge our cell phones. There were also no outlets near the bed, which was inconvenient since it's nice to keep your phone plugged in and within reach overnight. The room was charmingly antiquated. The mini refrigerator also leaked water during our stay. It appeared the small freezer compartment had accumulated enough frost that it likely just needed to be defrosted, so it seemed more like a maintenance issue than a broken appliance. We also noticed a few small bugs in the room during our stay. Given the oceanfront location and coastal humidity, this may simply be part of the environment, but it's something future guests should be aware of. Overall, we had a great experience and would definitely stay here again. Next time, we'd request a top-floor room to minimize the noise from above. read more

First time here Came for a weekend getaway. You can't get closer to the ocean. The cliff is 30 yards away (measurement in golf terms), a chip shot from the cliff, walk about 5 minutes to the steps that take you down to the shore. It's quite beautiful, and wake up to the ocean in the am. It's a small inn, that doesn't have many rooms. If you are thinking Hyatt or Four Seasons, this is not that. It's cozy, clean, within walking distance to the shops in La Jolla. They have: Beach towels. Chairs, umbrellas, and even a beach cruiser to use. Inside the hotel room: Toiletries, Keurig Coffee, water, high pressure shower, ac, and a friendly front desk person. Enjoy a nice relaxing time here! read more

Location is superb but paper thin walls, spider webs in the rooms, filthy surfaces and mold in the bathroom. The manager went over and above to make sure the housekeeping used bleach on the moldy tile and acknowledged it's overdue for a renovation. My friend stayed in the oceanfront suite, but the windows were so filthy and the trees so thick you could barely see the ocean. Apparently there was all sorts of activity on the street till the wee hours, so they couldn't leave the windows open to hear the waves crashing. Most of the other rooms back onto an alley which was somewhat quiet, but the walls are paper thin and you will hear everything. The sound of walking from the people in the room above us was so bad I would've rather slept in the car. we checked out early and the manager (a lovely, classy lady) was nice enough not to charge us for the last night. read more

Not worth the $$. Location is great but that was the best part. The staff were nothing special. The room just kind of had an old vibe, like rust in the bathroom and a grimy feel to the couch. I didn't notice any major cleaning issues except the roach...pictured below. A live roach would be one thing but we checked in early, so we saw housekeeping come and go, and they didn't even notice this guy ? Must not be super thorough... What else? Parking is not included, which is annoying given the pricetag. Oh, and housekeeping during the stay is not included either!!! They don't come. I know some hotels are doing every other day or something to save resources/the environment but they don't come at all. read more

This was by far the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. For $400 a night, I expected at least basic cleanliness and peace but this felt more like Section 8 housing than a beach getaway. We stayed on the bottom floor, and you can hear everything from upstairs: footsteps, voices, even how many steps it takes to get from the bed to the bathroom. Every toilet flush and creak echoed through the walls. The room itself was filthy. The floors were dirty, the rug was stained, the couch had visible marks, and even the throw pillows were gross and discolored. The ceiling fan was covered in dust it clearly hadn't been cleaned in a long time. I came here with kids and as a currently pumping mom, I accidentally dropped a pump part that rolled under the bed when I looked under, I was disgusted to see thick mounds of dust and grime. Just completely unacceptable. Sure, it's across the street from the beach, but that's not enough to justify staying in a place this dirty and poorly maintained. If you care about hygiene, comfort, or sleep, save your money and book elsewhere. This is not it. read more

For many years, we have stayed at Scripps Inn several times per year. The last several visits have been very disappointing. One visit, the carpet was flooded, it took several hours to get someone to look at it. We asked for another room, but they claimed all rooms were booked. Another visit my husband had to fix the toilet, the seat was very loose. We asked to have it fixed but they would not have someone to fix it till Monday but by that time we would be gone. My husband asked for a wrench and fixed the seat. Another visit, we invited our son, his wife & our granddaughter to come for the weekend. I was so embarrassed, the bathroom had mold & other things were not right. We have not been back for 2 years. We have found other places to stay at, not in La Jolla. We have great memories but unfortunately the Inn has to be upgraded. read more

Began by requesting an early check in on Friday afternoon. No response came from owner/manager. Check in was seamless and fine. Great location, good value for money. Friday evening we came back to an overwhelming sewage stench from somewhere. I called the hotel (no answer) and left a message about the situation. We could not keep the windows open at all for 90% of our time in the room because of the stench. Reminded us of our walk from the cruise ship to downtown Ensenada when you walk over an open sewer. No response came from the owner/manger. I doubt we will ever return to this place because of the neglectful communication from hotel management. Office closes at 5 pm on Fridays and did not reopen during out stay while we were there. We departed around 7 am Sunday morning. read more

The Inn is located practically on the shore (across the street). Quaint, small Inn. Full of charm. It certainly has evidence of aging, but nothing that detracted from our experience. Parking is sparse, so we were a bit conscious of leaving for fear of losing a place. But there was plenty of local shops and dining within walking distance. I'd love to stay there again! read more

We love this place. Nice cozy little motel with only 15-20 room tops. Every room has an ocean view from the balcony. The hotel is walking distance to the Cove as well as many bars and restaurants on Prospect. They also offer complimentary parking for it's guests on property, very beneficial during peak beach season. We were able to walk to the La Jolla Cove cliffs and watch the sunsets daily. The ocean front was bustling with activity all day long with people walking dogs, riding bikes or scooters or just relaxing reading a book. The Scripps Inn was the perfect place to unwind and spend our wedding anniversary without the kids. All of the hotel staff was friendly and helpful from the maids to the maintenance staff. The women at the front desk was amazing and really made our stay memorable. We cannot wait to go back to Scripps Inn and we MAY....bring the kids. read more

If a great location by the beach is what you want, fine. Otherwise, look elsewhere. For an overpriced small inn, this is the worst place I've ever stayed in the US. If you read past all the 5 star reviews that correctly talk about the excellent location & friendly staff, the 1 star reviews will give you a much better sense of what actually staying here is like. I'm writing this in the early AM as all the noise from makes sleeping impossible! Children & adults stomping around upstairs to the extent that my whole room shakes when they move. The floorboards squeak with every step they take. Ongoing street noise only adds to the problem. From their website , you might assume that this is a chic little boutique inn. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is a tired, old property that has seen sporadic upgrades, mostly cosmetic, over time. The rooms actually need to be completely renovated to justify the prices being charged. Our kitchenette has all the basics. It would be nice if the outlets for the Keurig & toaster weren't hidden under the cabinets, where my 4' 10" wife was the only one able to see them. There's an induction stove top that was impossible to turn on without downloading a manual from the internet (Hint: it takes a counterintuitive 2-step routine to operate). Lighting in the kitchen ( a single, bare, 20 watt Edison bulb) & living room areas is inadequate. Furniture is stained & uncomfortable. A cover on one of the couch cushions was so small that the foam pad was exposed. There's a large, inoperable wall heater full of cobwebs that should have been pulled out years ago, along with its useless thermostat. Although mini-splits have been installed, some of the required remotes are missing. The TV is an ancient flat screen mounted crooked on the wall. There's only one towel bar in the bathroom for a two bedroom unit and various other hooks to hang things have been broken off. And, the entire room was damp & musty. If I was here for a summer beach vacation I could probably overlook a lot of these issues. However, I'm here to meet up with family for Thanksgiving and wish I'd chosen a comfortable hotel that allowed for a good night's sleep. read more

I absolutely loved this place. It was so beautiful. The view from our room was gorgeous. When we got there we came very very late, and I didn't know the office was closed. I was able to call the number, and I believe it was either Joan, or Joanna who assisted up with check in, was EXTREMELY friendly, courteous, and quick with assistance. I felt like she really went above and beyond! We walked into the room, and I immediately loved the vibe. It was cute and spacious! It's themed to a coastal theme. The bed was comfortable. Over all it's older so there will be things that are shiny and sparkly, but it was very clean. The water pressure was amazing, and that doesn't come often in hotels! Minor things cannot get this little boutique hotel down in score for me. The location is outstanding in terms of closeness to the coves, Prospect, and many eateries, coffee shops, bars, etc. We stayed for two nights and I only wish we could've had a longer trip. La Jolla is magical in itself, but Scripps feels special. From the homey décor with the beachside theme, to the quaint terrace where you can read and sip a beverage with the ocean in your sightline. The small stuff that wasn't worth sweating: outlets are rather oddly placed in the room (most often hidden behind furniture in such a way that it was hard or impossible to plug anything in; we used the washroom outlet most) and if you're in a first floor unit (we were in 5), you can definitely hear your upstairs neighbours walking about. All this doesn't negate the positives for me. Brooke is the most wonderful concierge and goes out of her way to accommodate for her guests (personal text to notify that the room was ready early, luggage storage solution since our flight wasn't until the evening). The sweet ladies on the hotel staff were also incredibly kind and friendly. It's always so nice to get a smile back. I hope I get to stay here again, especially for summer! This had become our "go to" place to stay when visiting glorious La Jolla. Like ourselves, it has changed over the years. Prices have risen, but improvements have accompanied the rate hike. Scripp's Inn was the only choice for us in La Jolla. We have tried a couple of the other hostelries in town, but always returned to Scripp's. However, with the advent of airbnb's there are more choices now, with complete kitchens. After this last stay, I will try an Airbnb next time, and "test those waters." Changes are a float in La Jolla and at Scripps, and change isn't always good. Ideally located across from the ocean and coastal park, with the correct room and breeze, the sound of waves will lull you to sleep. Rooms are huge, done up in soothing tones of beige and turquoise. The beds are comfortable, and there is excellent storage. Yet, the furnishings are beginning to look worn and dated, hot water disappeared in the bathroom, and noise carries from the surrounding units. A small refrigerator is available for use in the rooms. Coffee and mediocre pastries are laid out in the office every morning, and there is a coffee maker in your room. Parking costs $16.00 a night. With about a ten minute stroll to the restaurants and nightlife of La Jolla, Scripp's Inn is perfectly tucked away so you can get a respite from the action. Holiday weekends in La Jolla welcome a tourist invasion formerly unheard of in these parts. I will avoid traveling to La Jolla on these holiday weekends, as tour buses line up along the water, ruining the bucolic essence of the town. This invasion brings in revenue, but the old time residents of La Jolla must be muttering constant expletives. Hopefully, La Jolla won't be ruined. Scripps Inn may not be what some would call luxury. Nor, is Scripp's a full fledged B & B. However, it was the perfect accommodation for La Jolla. However, like La Jolla itself, Scripps Inn has changed, and we will search for the La Jolla of old somewhere else on our next visit. Maybe we will find this reminiscent perfection My guess is, after our search, we will return to the Scripps Inn. read more

Love this cute little beachfront spot! Perfect for a weekend getaway withy a loved one. Parking is scarce so be prepared or bring your smart car! Walk to downtown La Jolla but it's uphill or stairwells so again be prepared and to the water is downhill unless you walk a bit further north. Very cute neighborhood! Service is great. This is not a big hotel conglomerate so don't expect much, come humble and ready to enjoy the ocean. read more

We stayed at the Scripps Inn during our wedding weekend as it is directly across the street from Cuvier Park (where we got married). Because our wedding was close to Thanksgiving, the rates for the rooms were pretty expensive at the time. We booked the Garden Suite for the night before the wedding to make sure that we had enough space for me and my bridesmaids to get ready. We booked the Vista Ocean Suite for our wedding night (the best room of the hotel). When checking-in on the day before the wedding, the staff told me that the guests who were staying in the Garden Suite wanted to stay longer so they gave us a two bedroom suite (which actually costs more) but didn't charge us more for it. It is larger than the Garden Suite as well, so it worked out well while we were getting ready for the wedding. The staff at the Inn also moved all of our stuff (we had A LOT) from the two bedroom suite to the Vista Ocean Suite for us while we were getting married; so that helped a lot! On the day after our wedding, waking up to see our ceremony site and the ocean was perfect. The staff at the Inn was great and although pricey, it was well worth it to stay there. I would definitely recommend Scripps Inn for anyone getting married at Cuvier Park. read more

It's summer and what better way to enjoy Southern California than to spend a few days by the beautiful beaches of La Jolla. I booked our room online via Booking.com for two adults and one child. Check in time is 4pm so we arrived around noon and spent the next four hours exploring and enjoying the sun and the beach. At 4pm we head out to the hotel. We arrive at about 4:20 and the lobby is open but no one is there. We wait around for about 7 minutes before the receptionist finally shows up. Okay, strike one! She tells us we have been upgraded and will be staying in room 15 which is a suite with the best view of the beach. That was an understatement! The view was amazing. The room itself was cute. Somewhat dated, but cute and charming. We had a kitchenette, a couch and a king size bed as well as an armchair and dining table. The only caveat was the lack of counter space for the coffee maker and toaster. We had to put them on the floor to plug them in. The 'breakfast' available in the lobby was just pastries and coffee or juice. Calling it breakfast is a stretch in my opinion. Overall I really enjoyed my stay and would recommend this inn to anyone wanting to stay near the beach. read more

This is was an amazing stay with marvelous views. This property overlooks the ocean, and you could just sit out at the patio to enjoy the view. They are following pretty strict Covid guidelines which puts a traveler at ease ! Our check in process was completely contactless. The staff communicated extremely well to make the remote check in such an easy process! The rooms are very nautical and has totally beachy appeal to it. At night you don't even need to open the windows, and you could hear the ocean sounds . The location is ideal with most restaurants within walkable distance or a 5 min drive away. Our stay was very pleasant even during such difficult circumstances and we would love to visit again. read more

I did a "staycation" and stayed one night at Scripps Inn and it was perfect! Perfect spot to stay at. It is right next to the beach with a lot of areas to go and watch the sunset. Its about a 10 minute walk from various restaurants, CVS, and grocery stores. I lucked out and stayed in a room where you could sit right outside your door and see the ocean. I had the most relaxing night of sleep listening to the waves crash. I would definitely stay here again! read more

Service is awful!!! My friend (the bride to be) rented a room for her bridal party to get ready day of wedding. We had an extended check out at 12:30pm approved in advance by the manager. At 11:30am hotel staff tells us we have to leave by noon because a guest (already in another room) wants this room with a view!!!! What?? How do you value the needs of one guest over the other especially when you have pre-approved late check out AND it's your Wedding Day!!! The worst part is a simple explanation to staff wasn't enough. This inns reluctancy to show any sort of understanding makes it a one star! Wouldn't EVER stay here again!! read more

I love this Inn for it's location but that's about it. It could use some upgrades. For the cost, the room is outdated and worn down. We stayed in Room #10. When we arrived, there were black hairs all over the top pillows & comforter (top of the bed) which was quite disgusting. Additionally, the dresser drawers were missing knobs. For the cost in La Jolla, I expect better quality within the rooms. The parking is a nice perk but for $18 a night, I would have preferred that fee waived as I could have found a spot on the street. Unfortunately, I know this is unavoidable but the construction across the way in the museum hurt our experience as we were woken up by that early Saturday morning and listened to that the entire morning. It would be good to inform your guests of the noise prior to their stay. Lastly, do not send an email to request customer feedback when the email address immediately sends a bounce back that doesn't accept your email. I flew into San Diego for my daughters birthday and we had an amazing time largely due to that fact that we stayed here. The room was extremely clean and feels like home. The location couldn't be better but what most impressed us was the customer service. They provided beach chairs and an umbrella that made our lazy day perfect. Positives: Location and the owner if very welcoming. When I decided to leave a day early, he didn't charge me. Opportunities for improvement: The heater sounded like rough car engine banging all night. The bed was very, very hard. I got no sleep. They charged me for parking when I had a handicap placard (I was told I could park on the street). My particular room was in the bottom right corner with no natural light; it was a cave. Yes, there were windows, but they were within a few feet of the next building, and the entry was under the stairs and balcony from the second floor. The TV didn't work. I couldn't reach the manager at 5:05 because the office was closed, so I got no TV signal at all during my stay. Concerns: As a single woman, it was scary to walk my dog at night. It was pitch black. There were no street lights near the hotel, and I felt unsafe. The hotel should have also said there was construction at the museum next door. Overall, maybe it would be better in warmer weather with a different room, but I wouldn't stay again. I left exhausted with a sore back. read more

We love coming to stay here for a relaxing weekend with our two Boston Terriers! Easy access from outside directly in to the room, and it's really nice to be right across the street from the beach and large grassy area. I really love that they call you to tell you if/when your room is ready before you check in. The staff is all extremely friendly and helpful. We prefer to visit in the cooler months since there is no A/C, which also coincides with the slower months. This is our third stay here, and we will definitely be back again as this is the best place we've found in the area to be able to stay with our dogs :) read more

Doesn't look like much from the outside. The front desk lady was very friendly and got us checked in quickly. The room was beachy looking and very roomy. The view is amazing and falling asleep to the crashing waves was surreal. The bed on the other hand, kind of too firm and hard to sleep comfortably on. But everything else made it worth it. Location? You can't beat it. No, but really, you can't. In the heart of La Jolla, this charming inn boasts an intimate setting with less than 20 rooms in an exquisite waterfront location. After hopping on a 5:30am flight and getting into San Diego around 11am (2pm my East Coast time), I was overjoyed to find that my room was ready prior to 3pm check-in. Yet rather than steal a quick nap, I felt compelled to explore the stunning shoreline, seals and all. I spent two nights a Scripps and found their continental breakfast to be surprisingly lovely with extremely delightful pastries. Even though I ended up seeking out a more substantial breakfast in town, jetlag forced me up by 5:30 each morning and the muffins and coffee from the office started me off on a great note. La Jolla is a hard place to leave behind, but I was SO thrilled to stay here for a few days - Scripps was the perfect hotel to enjoy the coastal surroundings. read more

Scripps Inn is a little hidden gem in La Jolla... I had the pleasure of staying there for three nights earlier this month. While I had quite the adventure flying in and out of San Diego for that trip, I quite enjoyed the time spent staying and sleeping in my comfortable room. I am a fan of the fabulous location, friendly staff onsite, and incredible views straight out your front door. That being said, I do not advise arriving after hours. As a woman traveling by myself arriving in the wee hours of the night, I wasn't the most comfortable working with their after hours policy to get into my room. I did miss having a full length mirror in my room, but that wasn't a huge deal since every other amenity needed was provided including a decent continental breakfast in the morning. (I stayed for breakfast one morning but took advantage of the amazing coffee shops and restaurants nearby on the other mornings instead). The waterfront location cannot be beat, and I suggest opening your windows to hear the sound of the waves crashing in as you fall asleep! read more

Good location if you want easy beach access. It's about a 10 minute walk to the downtown area. However the streets are completely empty at night and not very well lit, this is hazardous especially when walking up and down unfamiliar hilly streets. I'm very surprised this place is rated $$$. I was able to get a good rate which justified staying here but definitely wouldn't spend $250+ per night here. It's an ok but basic motel. It was nice to hear waves at night but didn't make up for the age and quality of the accommodations. The heater came on but there was a burning smell that freaked me out a bit so I only had it on when I was in the room and awake. Furnishings are old and not very well maintained or kept (ie missing knobs). This place could benefit from a nice renovation but good option if location and beach proximity is your main objective. read more

We will not be returning and would caution those seeking a peaceful atmosphere. -- Our first night, guests in one of the other rooms were yelling and cussing loudly for a couple hours over a sports game. That was tolerable as they were quiet once the game ended. Still a couple hours of shouting profanity at the TV. -- Second night, one of the rooms next to us has a party. Music and loud talking 9PM UNTIL 8AM in the MORNING. We were woken up all night - every time someone banged their door shut, when the party got noisy, etc. There's no lobby to call in the middle of the night when the other guests are incredibly disruptive. -- as other reviews state, there is also construction next door so that's pretty loud as well. read more

Stayed here recently in a 2 room suite with my parents. Rooms were cute with beach decor. Comfortable bedding and the place was clean. Beautiful ocean views! If you're looking for a quaint cute place to stay in La Jolla this place is great! read more
