If anyone asked me where they should stay in San Diego, I would point them to Humphrey's Half Moon Inn! It's a perfect slice of tropical paradise in Shelter Island area of San Diego. I had a 2-night midweek stay because my work booked our annual department in-person workshop here. This hotel had a beautiful pool and outdoor seating area, it was so nice to lounge here in the spring sunshine. Lots of lush tropical plants all around to give more of that paradise vibe. They even had 2 macaws hanging around and a koi pond! It is a pretty small property, so never too far to walk around. This is also a concert venue, so some rooms face the stage area, which is pretty cool! The room looked renovated, there were new fixtures, but the carpet and some of the structure felt old. It was pretty spacious though. First floor rooms do get a small outdoor patio, which would be nice to enjoy coffee in the morning. My room ended up facing the parking lot, which wasn't so glamorous, lol. Shelter Island is a nice, safe place to walk around, super close to Liberty Station and Sunset Cliffs. Not too far of a drive from beaches and the airport. My company had our workshop in the harbor room, connected to the restaurant. It overlooked all of the boats parked in the bay, which was a pretty sight. The catering was good, not the worst but not the best. We got breakfast burritos (yummy), box lunch sandwiches (ran out of meat options), and bagels (just okay, turkey slices were the only protein source). My favorite meal was actually a lunch that was hosted in the restaurant, where I got a stuffed gnocchi dish with a slice of cheesecake at the end. Really delicious and SUPER filling! Picture this. You're a single mom who saved to take your two sons and your mom on a two-night getaway. A chance to relax, make memories, and recharge. I spent over $1,000 on Room 408, plus $200 for parking and another $460 at the hotel. I knew I was splurging for my family and expected a comfortable stay. Instead, it was a nightmare. I called ahead requesting early check-in due to a meeting and was told it sounded promising. We arrived at 1 PM, but the room wasn't ready until almost 4 PM. In extreme heat, my mom and toddler waited outside at a pool with almost no shade. When we finally got into Room 408, we loved it. But that night, the AC didn't work. We barely slept. The next day, water started pouring from the AC unit and vents, soaking the carpet. Maintenance blamed a nonexistent bathroom drain and left a towel on the floor. An hour later, water came from another vent. The room was unbearably hot. My kids, my mom, and I were sweating. We were moved to another room, which we were told was "the biggest room they had." We didn't need the biggest room--we needed working AC. The replacement room was outdated, had a ripped chair, crayon on the table, a rusty bathtub with no stopper, and terrible soundproofing. We got no sleep again. To recap: Over $1,000 for the room $200 parking $460 spent at the hotel Hours waiting in extreme heat Broken AC and water leaking from vents A stressful room move with two children A damaged, noisy replacement room When we called about a communication issue with maintenance, the front desk responded to my mother with "GEEZ!" as if we were the problem. After all of this, the resolution offered was a $50 credit. I worked for Marriott for six years. I understand issues happen. What I don't understand is the complete lack of meaningful hospitality recovery after a stay was ruined. I saved for this trip. I wanted memories with my boys and my mom. Instead, we left exhausted and disappointed. A $50 credit does not match this experience. Management: do you truly believe this was an appropriate resolution? I will never stay here again. I hope future guests think carefully before spending their hard-earned money here. Now days later, I'm getting double charged by them. Started out nice very lush grounds lots of flowers. Lots of greenery room was pretty good small but pretty good. We picked the stay at seven days so we had lots of clothes lots of things in the room unpacked everything day three we left to go out by the pool while they clean the room came back three huge sewer roaches two in the shower, one where our food was, and the coffee machine was had several open bags of food there sealed, but still hidden, opened, killed the roach by the food. The two in the shower were crawling on the tile and all that fell down, went back into the drain so it didn't get to kill them. Went to the front desk showed them the video in the pictures. They said oh we'll just move you to another room and give you $100 credit so now we have seven days worth of clothing here that we have to move we can't repack in our packing tubes and all that so they didn't offer to help us move or provide a golf cart or anything to make it easier didn't tell us where the other room was, which was my fault for not asking so we're lugging this stuff around looking for this room. Finally find it closet smaller it's an adjacent room so you can hear the people next to you talking. Was seven days of clothing for two people. The clot is very small wife is freaked out. Have to leave the lights on in the bathroom all night long to try and keep the roaches away every time something touches her she thinks move she freaks out don't hear anything from the hotel not asking if we've been able to move by ourselves if everything was fine not very involved at all in our issues all of this spending thousands and thousands of dollars for seven nights here getting downsized all for $100 credit not very customer friendly other than that again beautiful grounds pulls very nice. They actually have ice machines around to get so you can get ice but probably wouldn't come back because of the customer service on the roaches. read more

We got a room for a 2-day stay. The staff were very accommodating with an upgrade when there was a booking snafu! They gave us a 1st level room right across the outside stage (no one played there during our stay), no complaints there. The patio door's lock wouldn't unlock, but no worries. The rooms around us were quiet; the excercise room was small but very doable The pool was large and heated. The hottub was next to an outdoor bar, and a great place vibe with other guests of all ages! We didn't see a show at the indoor stage, yet it looked like a good time. Both the hotel and the surrounding area lend themselves to epic views of the bay! Plenty of places for long walks. Other restaurants and shops are within walking short driving distances. At night downtown San Diego and the night sky are a sight to see. You might even catch a naval ship entering or leaving during the day. With lots to see and do and visit, and come back to chill at the hotel and still feel like your part of it all, this is the place to be! read more

Our five-day stay during my daughter's spring break was absolutely wonderful. My husband, daughter, and I loved relaxing by the pool and making the most of our time together. The hotel's prime location made it effortless to visit Belmont Park, the San Diego Zoo, Fashion Valley. popular breakfast spots, and a nearby grocery stores. My husband also enjoyed starting his mornings with a refreshing run by passing the japanese friendship bell. They have a laundry room for 4 dollars per wash and dry. You just need to download the app to pay. It was very convenient to wash the clothes while we were away from home. This hotel was recommended to me by a friend who lives in the area and said it's one her favorite spots! And I can totally see why. I stayed here for one night when I was in town for work. If you're visiting San Diego and want to truly feel like you're on a beautiful vacation in socal, this is definitely a hotel you should stay at! It's a bigger property than it looks on the outside. I had a rather large room to myself with two queen beds and although it didn't overlook the marina, it did overlook the pool area, which was absolutely beautiful with tropical looking trees and whatnot. I have heard they tend to do concerts in there, too, which is pretty cool! The room is really nice and clean and I definitely enjoyed my stay here. The only thing I will say is that they do have a nice area for you to do your makeup, which is great, but the mirror is super high up and the seat is very low. I'm pretty average height and I couldn't even see myself in the mirror haha. The bathroom was great, and the shower worked well. They also have a safe in the room as well and a minifridge and microwave. Would definitely recommend this area, too. It's located close to a lot of restaurants and bars in the area and again, like across the street from the marina and absolutely stunning views. They do have parking but you do have to pay to park there whether or not you're staying there. I was also able to call in the morning and get a late checkout and was able to do an hour after which was great. I love the Polynesion atmospere and bayside gardens of this lovely hotel nestled on beautiful Sheleter Island in Point Loma. The hotel is the first one you meet, on the right, when you drive onto Shelter Island from Rosecrans Street. There is a large porte-cochere that extends up, up and up. The entire hotel is a celebration of Tiki architecture which was so popular in the 1960's here in San Diego and elsewhere as well. In fact, this hotel may be the finest example of Tiki architecture in all of San Diego County. If you stay at Humphrey's Half Moon Inn hotel, it is an easy walk for dinner to the nearby Ketch Restaurant (owned by the Brigantine Group) or to the Brigantine itself just up Shelter Island Drive. In addition, the Bali Ha'i Restaurant is just a short stroll away from the Inn. read more

We've stayed here many times over the years and it's a reliable hotel in a great location on Shelter Island. They remodeled the front lobby and it is bright and airy and very sharp looking. The old lobby was dated and cramped. The front desk staff was cheerful and helpful. Our room seemed to be updated but I don't know for sure. I won't say the beds are the comfiest in the world, because they aren't, but the room was clean and quiet. I believe all rooms come with a mini-fridge and microwave. I can honestly say I have never used a hotel room microwave but I do love mini-fridges. One amenity no one uses is their free one hour bike rentals. In one hour, you can easily ride all around the island in one hour with a couple of stops thrown in. The hotel is easy walking distance to local restaurants including hidden gem Fathom on the pier, the Brigantine, Ketch, and the Bali Hai. They are presently updating the pool bar and it should look very nice when it is completed. The hotel is not always cheap during summer and other prime vacation times but look for deals at off-times of the year, when the tourists haven't arrived yet. For locals, it's a great staycation. read more

Very disappointed. We stayed here 2 night recently. We had an accessible room due to my husband being in a wheelchair. The room was very small and not wheelchair friendly. The bathroom was also small and not easily accessible due to the door opening into the bathroom. It was very restrictive and difficult to access the shower. We could not figure out how to work the "accessible" shower head and had to call for help. My husband could not use the patio due to it being to small for a wheelchair and there being a lip that his chair could not get over. Do better Humphreys. People with disabilities want to have a comfortable stay too. We will not be staying here again. read more

First of all, we will come back to Humphreys. I do have to express disappointment at our last stay. It was not disclosed to us that construction was underway in the pool area. The jacuzzi was closed. The pool bar was under renovation. We stayed mid-week and each day there was construction noise 8-5. Tile saws and also workers walking through the gardens. Our rate was reasonable, but it would have been more professional and courteous to have posted a " pardon our dust" notice online and in person when reservations were made. The resort and parking fees are not reasonable for the property especially when being remodeled. The rooms have been updated and have nice bar, fridge, microwave setup. The bed was not great as far as comfort. Just ok. Choose the location of your room carefully. Upstairs is more private and ocean breezes blow through but no balconies that I saw. Downstairs convenient to stepping out to pool, but no views really. Back patio area with chairs & table is a positive. ASK about concerts & choose your dates based on what you want - excitement, music, lotsa people or non concert dates for a quiet Hawaii feel. Edit : the hotel response gave the impression my recent stay was good. It's the reverse - my stay in May 13-15 2024 was not good, because of construction. read more

The family and I spent one night at Humphreys Half Moon Inn. The Mrs. and I attended the Andy Bell concert and kiddo tagged along....just because she likes hotels. I read the reviews from my fellow Yelpers about Humphreys and all I have to say to them is....get over yourselves. When it comes to hotels I keep my expectations low and reasonable. That's not a bad thing I'm just a self-sufficient individual that requires no hand holding. We arrive shortly after 2 p.m. The Mrs. booked the reservation through a third party website requesting one bed. Since kiddo was joining us, we needed a room with two beds. I was tasked with requesting the two beds because I apparently have a calming voice and pleasant demeanor. Lol! Checking in was quick and easy. All I had to do was simply as for a room with two queen beds and my request was easily accommodated. We were assigned room 131 which is located in building C which is a first floor room. I was surprised at how big the room was. It had a spacious bathroom with a small vanity. Two large chairs, a desk, tv and a small patio that leads out onto the path to the rest of the resort. 131 is conveniently located by the pool and the onsite concert venue is less than 50 feet from the patio door. The grounds are lush with tropical plants. You'd almost think you were in Hawaii if it wasn't for the airport less than a mile away. The pool area was beautiful. The pool is large and has comfortable seating around it. The Chaise lounges have thick cushions on them and the chairs have cushions as well. There is a new pool bar that opened up recently called the Oasis Pool Bar. Sadly, it isn't a swim up bar. It does have plenty of seating. Sierra was behind the bar and was so friendly. She knew all the regulars. I ordered a Mai Tai and the Mrs. ordered a Margarita. Both were strong but good. The prices are what you'd expect at a resort. Overall the staff we interacted with were friendly. And the other hotel guests were also very friendly. We were all at Humphreys for a common cause. To see Andy Bell and have a great time. And we did. WiFi is offered throughout the resort and is included in the $20 resort fee. Parking is $25 per day. Your card will be charged $50 for incidentals for each day of your stay. read more

This really hurt me to lower my rating to three stars from five. While the gardens remain very peaceful and beautiful, and the staff very competent and friendly, there is now a serious meal issue here for us. As a backdrop, when we first started coming here a year and a half ago, they served lunch as well as breakfast and dinner. At some point, they eliminated lunch. On our most recent trip here, earlier this week, they had cut back their dinner service, eliminating 2-3 days. This was never communicated, and we only learned of this when we dressed up and walked over to the restaurant only to learn it was closed. When we get to a location, we really don't want to drive or Uber to a restaurant, especially since the dinners here were always very good. We are Gold Members but truly have to consider other alternatives for our visits to San Diego, next planned for June. read more

We loved the location and the beautiful grounds of this hotel. Their restaurant is also very nice and overlooks the marina. We stayed in a suite that was perfect! We had the corner room, and it was quiet and cozy. We selected ths hotel for the AWB concert that was being held on their grounds. I'm so glad we did. It was comfortable, convenient, and relaxing. There was a nice big TV in the living room area that I was able to connect our Netflix account to very easily. The restroom is large and contained complimentary shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion. We actually arrived at noon and they were so gracious to allow us to check in. The service we received from check in to check out was outstanding. There are plenty of restaurant within walking distance if you prefer to venture out. We strolled along the bay and found places to eat and enjoy a drink. We also took an Uber to Little Italy, which I highly recommend. Parking can be downright near impossible in that area. We loved this place and will definitely be back for more concerts by the bay! read more

Location was really nice and I had no idea this part of San Diego is known as Shelter Island. I had a 2nd floor room, nothing really to write home about, but it does have a small fridge and a microwave. One of the electric outlets wasn't working and could not get the desk light to turn on and this was needed as I work remotely, but I also didn't bother to ask maintenance for help, that would just be more of a pain for only a 2 night stay. I really liked the location as the morning jogs were super nice by the water, with also seals nearby. I got to see the beautiful sunrise on the water, pretty nice, considering I live in the desert. Overall, a cool spot! Don't know how I would feel if I was here on a concert night, so this review was for a 2 night stay during the week. I tend to like more quiet and peace now. read more

We stayed here for a mini babymoon. The property is lots of fun. The maintenance staff and wait staff at Humphrey's Backstage Live (especially Naomi) were lovely. The few front desk staff we interacted with were kinda icy which caught me off guard. Just one example--I didn't know the rooms don't come stocked with water bottles, so when I went to ask, the man at the front kind of stared and curtly said "no we don't give you water bottles, but you can buy them over there." Turns out there's a free self-serve water filling station I discovered on my own. But all that to say I understand times are hard, a job's a job and this is not Disneyland. Ultimately we'd still come back just for the charm of the property itself. Even the cheaper "no view" rooms have a nice view of Coronado. read more

So you understand that this appalling run down, excuse of a hotel did not meet even my lowest expectations, that your hotel did nothing to remedy this, and flat out refused to offer a refund or even return a phone call to discuss? So I should be delighted that instead of any sort compensation or accountability, at least you "really regret" this disappointing experience. You understand that this was supposed to be a very special occasion but was in fact, completely ruined by your hotel. And you shamelessly charged me for it even though I left before unpacking because it was so bad. But hey, you regret that so...all is well? What a consolation! Not ideal for a family with two little ones. Stayed here on a whim, the photos looked very inviting. Arrived in the evening around 9pm, front desk staff were rude and seemed annoyed that I arrived later in the evening. They complained about a shift change and that my reservation through Hotels.com required extra work. Once checked in, my family and I went to our room, #212 Junior Suite. Our room was situated on the second floor, near the concert venue. I was surprised to see that our entrance was out in the open, next to the stairs, and also near another door that leads to other rooms. This was a problem at night, as we could hear other guests coming up the stairs and opening/closing the door. This was quite annoying. The room itself is very dated. Poor housekeeping left the carpet with crumbs from previous guests. Our room also smelled like smoke, possibly from the bonfires on the beach. We had a view of the parking lot and beyond that, the water front. Sheets were okay, but the sofa sleeper didn't feel clean. I opted to have the wife and kids sleep on the bed, while I took the couch. The grounds themselves seem nice. Good looking pool, koi ponds, and birds to view during the day. Overall, our experience felt more like a motel, surrounded by palm trees. Not worth it for us. For the price, Kona Kai down the road would be a better choice. read more

The balcony offered no reprieve as "garden view" equated to "obstructed by palm trees & bird poop". Bummer. The lack of bird spikes/deterrents + the irregular cleaning intervals really exemplify low-effort. The oversized Marina suite was uninspired & not worth the upsell. It's identical to the Oversized Queen suite but features more empty common area space. Housekeeping will not service rooms occupied by guests; daft & quite inconvenient. At worst it's disingenuous considering the safe (14" x 1.5" x 16") is just large enough for a single unopened laptop. The opportunity cost isn't worth leaving your valuables unattended. Turnover is also performed with doors wide-open, on multiple rooms at once. Ripe conditions for something to "go missing". BED [Queen] -- good A supportive Serta hospitality mattress that provided quality sleep. There's still much to be desired from this setup due to the inconsistent pillow fill, undersized bedding, & makeshift duvet situation. Sheet quality was just "ok", but everything was clean, so good enough. The bed-side utility was a standout: multiple outlets + USB ports galore & reading lights in some configurations. Queen-sized sofa sleeper included in suites. BATH -- ok A medium-sized bathroom, lukewarm on design & similarly on function. Toilet height was uncomfortable (low) & other installations had odd quirks. Not to mention the chipped tub... Despite cosmetic woes, the shower experience was fine. Water pressure & towel quality were just satisfactory but htose Nectar bath products stole the show -- so aromatic & moisturizing with a great lather, dispensed from hassle-free squeeze bottles. Amazing . Aside from the bath products, no toiletries were present in any configuration so pack mindfully They're inconsistent on stocking rooms w/bathrobes but it's worth procuring; airy & lightweight w/a 60-40 blend perfect for the microclimate. TV SOLUTION/ACTIVITIES -- ok 2x 55" UHD LG Hospitality TV's -- a gorgeous display for 4k content. Ports were easily accessible & there were multiple streaming integrations incl. Netflix, Amazon Prime, & Showtime. Combined with the Local programming + on-demand DirectTV, it was a formidable entertainment center. It wasn't as optimized for quality/UX: constant buffering, sluggish UI navigation, & ads galore ‍. A large pool & jacuzzi were steps away from our door; pros & cons (noise) to this but overall the easy access is satisfying for patio units. Hours were also generous hours (6-11). ‼ whoever is in charge of maintenance: there's wayyy too much chlorine used in the jacuzzi. ‼ The fitness center is more of a 'personal gym' due to the size. Readily felt cramped with just 3 guests & was always occupied. RECOMMENDATION Final Price: $266.58/night Was it worth it? no Best part: location Accommodations were memorable for their huge dimensions & the property was beautiful-- Terrific eye-candy! Yet, it all but falls apart under any scrutiny: this stay was MUCH noisier than we could've anticipated (quiet hours aren't enforced), food staff were poorly trained, & it was impossible to obtain accurate info for important things, like food allergies or for mundane services (i.e. housekeeping). For whatever reason it's still a popular destination for families & older guests. Personally, I can't see myself returning nor would I recommend this business. 2/5 read more

Great experience! Room and overall ambiance was amazing. The family had such a fun time exploring shelter island.

Some expensive skin care products were left in the room or went missing from the room where we stayed last week. I called immediately when I got home and realized they were missing. I was told that I had to go through some complicated 3rd person website to report it which was ridiculous as we had just checked out. The format they use is cumbersome and not customer friendly and kept kicking me out. So I called again a few days later and was on hold for 20 minutes. Eventually a very snotty person told me they couldn't tell me if they had been found. Then when I questioned that she told me to do what I had to do and hung up on me!! Nice customer service. I won't be staying there again. This system makes no sense and the front desk staff are beyond rude!! read more

recently stayed here for the holiday weekend and was not happy with our visit. We first arrived and were given a room with no balcony (even though on expedia they have photos with a balcony). They finally switched our rooms but front desk was not happy about it. Then we get to our room and our remote was SO SLOW and kept freezing. Dinner at the restaurant was extremely flavorless and the pool was freezing! The heater smelt like fart and overall our stay was the worst in San Diego! We usually love our visit to San Diego but this hotel really was not it for us! read more

The property is pretty and shelter island as a whole is gorgeous. They charge for water at the pool - legitimately telling you they can't give you ice water. Any place that nickels and dimes and forces you to pay $2 for water at a pool, in the sun isn't deserving of 3,4 or 5 stars. If you act like a low rate cheap motel with your practices, you should aptly be rated on the same scale. read more

Well, I was kind of scared to stay here from the Yelp reviews. We booked before I read. I went because I was going with a group of people, so hence it would be hard to change and I went secondly because I then read Trip Advisor and they didn't seem to have extreme reviews like Yelp. We came to visit because our kid's sport team was invited to play a team in SD so us parents thought it would be fun to make an overnight trip of it. I was kind of expecting a disheveled motel but I was greeted with Polynesian structures and swaying palm trees so I instantly felt better I wasn't staying at a dump. I'm kind of really picky about where I stay after one horrible experience at a motel 6, 20 years ago. Parking to check-in was full at 4pm so we took a ticket and parked I the gated section. We took a short walked to front desk and the nice lady had no problem when 4 families asked to possibly be in the same building on the same floor near each other. She was really great about it and we appreciated the time it took her to make sure we did all get to stay together. While we waited I took a look around the lobby and noticed it was big and pleasing. With a snack counter for purchases like instant ramen to be made. The lobby was decorated nice and was clean and the kids entertained themselves at one of the couch set ups they had while us parents checked in. After we got our keys, we drove just a bit down to our building. I was expecting gross outdated rooms but they were pretty clean, bright, decorated nicely with wood shutters and the most important thing the bed looked nice with white fluffy inviting sheets! Everything appeared to be and was clean. During our one night stay we ate in their large restaurant. With a party of 12 they sat us quickly and served us quickly. We went to the pool and while there were some construction signed it didn't hinder us from swimming. The pool area was big with plenty of chairs and resting areas. We walked around the hotel which was scenic on shelter island. They do charge $25 for parking overnight and a $20 resort fee which by now "extras" just seem to be the norm. I wish they just include it in the price but I blame the airlines for starting the nickel and diming. Is it the Four Seasons? No. But it was nice for an over night trip. I thought it was modern and not run down. It's not fancy but it gets the job done and the Polynesian touches were nice. You definitely felt like you were getting away. I was glad to have only stayed one night as our room was in front of what had to be 1000 person outdoor stage. They were loading in for a big concert that night. I'm not sure if a room by the stage would have been cool or not but I was glad to get a quite nights rest during my one night. I would return. read more

Location and good price. However a tired and worn suite. Off season had limited activity.

Not warmly greeted at check in. The room assigned fronted the parking lot. No view to the bay from the patio because of overgrown vegetation. The room itself was filthy and it SMELLED like rotting carpeting. Wear flip flops in the room to protect your feet. The bed was ok (but not something to rave about). The pool bar was horrible. Even worse, the food we ordered was wretched. We had to send our order back because it was not cooked (all red meat sliders). After a long delay, we got our order and it tasted terrible. I visited this hotel several times over the years and it appears to me to be on its last legs. Way, way over priced! Rates should follow a Motel 6, not a Marriot. read more
