I went back-and-forth if I should write a review because I feel bad leaving a negative one. I just feel like my family was tricked. Scammed almost. You pay for the location and that is about it. The main lobby was super cute. We were very excited to stay here. But it took a turn when we were shown our room. The smell was so bad you could smell it a few feet outside of our door. We would wake up in the middle of the night because the smell woke us up. It smelled like mildew & mold so bad, on top of cigarettes and hospice. I went to call to ask for a new room and our phone didn't work. I moved the side bedroom table to see if it was plugged in and it was so dirty with bugs and lint balls. I didn't touch the phone again. I called from my cell phone to see about changing our room. She told me I could come the next day and take a look at other rooms that were available, but we were only there for one more night and we had plans with friends that day. The carpet is disgusting. The couch is so dirty. There were brown stains on the sheets of our bed. Every time the cleaning crew would come in, they would open every single window to the fullest to mask the smell. There's not a restaurant here so you have to go get your food and bring it in. There were dead bugs in the utensil drawers. So we used plastic utensils, and paper plates our whole trip. Our room looked nothing like the lobby. A motel 8 would've been better. Even the pool is sad. We were going to cancel our stay and book somewhere else, but we booked through Expedia and it's a nightmare trying to get a refund through them. Otherwise, we would've left after the first day. When leaving a manager pulled me aside and said he was going to comp one day resort fee for us because of the smell. He didn't have to do that, but it was nice of him. We will never be back unless they do a serious update. So sad because the location is killer! read more

I was visiting Coronado Beach for a couple of days, and because of its proximity to the beach and to local hotspots, I booked two nights here. What I enjoyed: - I was really impressed with the included breakfast. The spread was delicious, vast and rotated daily. Everything I tried tasted well. The staff working breakfast were constantly placing out more food and ensuring cleanliness. - The staff we came across during our stay were friendly. Any questions we had, they tried their best to be helpful. - Calling in from our room to hear the bedtime story "Good Night Moon" was pretty neat. My littles appreciated this extra. - The dedicated section of the history of the home in the main house, second floor. No one told us this area existed (which would be nice to share with guests), but while exploring the inn after breakfast one morning, we came across some displays in the same section as the primary bedrooms of John Spreckles and his family. What could've been better: - Understandably, this is a "historic" building, but I've lodged at similar historic sites in other cities that don't feel as forgotten as this building does. I was disappointed by the evident lack of cleanliness, attention to detail, and upkeep. The inn felt like it was falling through the cracks, aside from the common areas. - The room itself was a total letdown. It didn't at all reflect the luxury advertised in the photos online. Talk about catfished :( The first impression after opening the door was not one of impressiveness or excitement, but rather of concern and discomfort. This room didn't make me feel warm or relaxed, or even like I was on a beach. The furniture in the room was chipped, old, beaten down, and some pieces were visibly dirty; it felt like a room from an old motel in a scary movie. The lighting, bedding, and decor of the room were dark and dated. The mood of the room was dark and eerie. Our room had a funky odor. I believe housekeeping tried to mask it by leaving the bathroom window open, which is never a pleasant welcome for a guest. Especially when your room is assigned on the first floor, and your property is set on a public main street with a sidewalk accessible to all. Speaking of the bathroom, our bathroom was visibly unclean, especially the bathtub. None of the shampoo, conditioner or soap bottles had been refilled with products. An old phone that hung on the bathroom wall, collecting dust, was doing just that because it did not function as a phone. There was a brown paper bag placed on a table, which was part of the "personalized welcome amenities", which felt more like a forced afterthought. A rolled-up piece of "scroll" (paper) stuffed with the most random assortment of snacks did not hit the way they intended. I felt uncomfortable sleeping and showering in our room. I was relieved we were only here for two nights. - The old AC in the room made a ton of noise and made our room very stuffy at night. I'm unsure when it was last cleaned. - The walls were paper-thin; we could hear when our neighbors were coming in/out of their rooms. We could hear people walking on the public sidewalk nearby. - Our room had a patio area, which, although covered with two plastic chairs and a small table, was not very private or welcoming. In addition, as mentioned previously, our floor was on the first floor, facing the inn parking lot, adjacent to a public sidewalk. This property is not gated, and I did not notice security on-site. If safety is a factor in your stays, I would consider this if you are assigned a first-floor room or want to hang out in your patio late night/early morning. - More food options for purchase, aside from the small assortment of dry snacks in the lobby, would be great. - The included breakfast was great; however, seating was a nightmare. Indoor seating is generally limited. Families or groups of more than four will have a difficult time finding a place to sit together without having to push chairs around. If you are able to snag an outside table, you should also prepare to fight off the seagulls that you'll dine alongside outside. - The pool was tiny and underwhelming. It fits a max of 22 people. The hot tub has a max of 4. There are literally three times that many rooms. - It's nice to include water gear rental for guests at no charge, but it defeats the purpose of offering those "little luxuries" if the equipment is broken, rusted, dirty, and/or in poor condition. - Parking was a pain. Especially if the hotel is busy, it's best to walk to nearby places rather than leaving the parking lot and possibly returning to a full lot. Overall, understanding that this was once a personal, private mansion that has now been expanded into a full-service historic inn, there are several areas the inn could improve to hit the mark they are aiming for. read more

The room was quite with a view of the strett and a partial view of the water blocked by a building in part. No elevator in the section we were in and well lite stairs. It started off OK. Front desk was nice. Pool was overblown from pictures. It's TINY! Place is clearly run down. New owners I heard. It clearly shows they don't take care of the place or make any improvements and are all about numbers now not customers and care for the place. Room, 444. Not great. Very run down, dirty carpet, worn out baseboards, doors, ugly standard tile like in cheap motels, bed was hard and my god the noise from the upstairs family was bonkers! All night like like a circus above me with elephants in the act. Not only that, there are no bloody curtains in the room. NONE! Just blinds! So the room was like sleeping in a ballpark with all the lights on! As bright as day in there. So sleeping was not a thing. We just wanted to get out of there and go home. We did not let it ruin our "staycation" but I can assure you for the price, over $400 per night, it was a $60 room max. Very unhappy we chose this place when we could have spent just a bit more for The Del. The breakfast was OK. Fruit and berries not all that fresh. Coffee was just OK. It works but was not super special. Overall I really give this place 1 star but I will give it 2 stars for the front Desk. They have a lot of work to go to be asking these prices for these rooms. The landscaping was gorgeous and well kept Rooms were a bit musty, leaking shower obviously under the paint. Light on the outside wall of the room illuminated all night, no black out curtains. The chairs for sitting outside the room were dirty and wet, not sure why housekeeping ignored. This hotel is cute. Some things definitely are a bit outdated, but what it lacks in modernness it makes up for in charm. The lobby and breakfast lounge areas are beautiful with classic crown molding and decor. Breakfast is offered from 7-10am and they have a surprisingly nice variety from the usually continental breakfast yogurt, cereal, bagels, and toast, to fresh cooked eggs, Canadian bacon, potatoes, and pancakes. Coffee, tea, and water available 24hrs. There's a small pool and hot tub, but it was raining when I stayed so that wasn't going to happen (lol). The next night we walked across the street through the Hotel Del Property and down the boardwalk and beach. Beautiful! Hadn't done this in decades. We drove to Peohe's for birthday dinner and it is our favorite restaurant for 28 years. GBInn is a great place to stay. Secure, parking, private, breakfast 7-10am, quiet! We had an upstairs suite including a sliding door, king bed, Spotless and no odors. No noise at all. I've been coming here since I was a little baby. This time, I am here without my parents at 22 years old with my boyfriend of 5 years! We celebrated our anniversary this past week / weekend. We stayed 3 nights here, and it was wonderful as always. The staff are so attentive, very sweet and caring people. You feel so taken care of. The front desk are always very professional and kind. They always seem so gentle to me, and I love that. I automatically get calmer the second I walk through the doors to the front desk. That's how great the people are here. You instantly feel their energy. Claudia has been here since I was little and she was able to make sure we could come the weekend we wanted! The historic vibes mixed with modern comfort make it feel both cozy and special. The staff was super friendly and welcoming from the moment we arrived. The room was clean, comfortable, and had everything we needed. Except we did have an incident with a cockroach that ran across the bed, but the front desk gave us a trap in case there were more. We especially loved the little touches like complimentary breakfast and the relaxing courtyard area. It's the perfect spot for a peaceful getaway while still being close to all the fun in Coronado. The 3 stars are for the Bay View King room 788. We paid extra to have a bay view and it was not worth it at all. When on the balcony and looking straight out all you see are trees that block the bay view. There is a small view when looking to the right out in the distance. The room was very spacious, had a small kitchenette (sink, fridge, microwave & coffee maker), a small table and two chairs and a comfy chair in the corner with an overhead light perfect for reading. Regarding the Inn in general: 5 stars for location and the hot breakfast every morning. I would recommend staying here because everything is within walking distance and you're directly across the street from the Hotel Del Coronado and 2 blocks from the beach. It was just OK. The best part is the historic value of the building and it's history. The breakfast they provide is very decent and a good value as included with the room cost. The things that were more of a challenge were the rock hard lumpy pillows and the eh bed. I also thought the little brown paper bag with goldfish crackers and fruit snacks with a rolled up scroll in it with a copied sheet of paper tied with curling ribbon that indicated the special customer name on it was a bit childish and too "homespun" for what we like. The housekeeping and outdoor teams kept the rooms spotless and the grounds beautifully maintained. When my car unexpectedly broke down, my husband had to come tow it home. I explained the situation to the general manager, Claudia, who went above and beyond to make a stressful situation so much easier. She quickly moved me to a more spacious room that could comfortably accommodate two people and even reserved two parking spots--one for my husband's truck and one for the trailer he was hauling. Claudia and the front desk team provided outstanding service throughout our visit. I would highly recommend staying here--not just for the warm and attentive staff, but also for the prime location, free breakfast and parking, and clean, comfortable rooms. The only plus to this hotel is that it's close to everything and they have good breakfast. The staff is very friendly and they accommodated our requests, but the hotel itself is not the best. First glance into our room there was a spider on the floor (alarming as I have little kids). There were stains on nearly everything in the room. The shower was very old, the drain cover wasn't even attached. It seems very out dated and a little grimy. This is a hotel with a great location across from the Hotel Del Coronado. The staff is great, breakfast is adequate, small pool, but a very tired property in need of a MAJOR renovation. Rooms are tiny (deluxe king room), not enough space to even shut the bathroom door without stepping aside (see picture). We did have a nice small balcony. Carpet was stained and crusty (likely from cleaning), the room was dusty but adequate. Beds were very firm and sagging in the middle. As others reported the rooms smell very musty. Pool furniture is tired, sagging fabric, and small tables weren't clean and had bird poop on them. The hot tub/spa was closed and very cloudy water. Tiny umbrellas, very small pool. Property next door is under construction which closes the sidewalk in front of the hotel. Next time we will stay at a more updated property. It has lots of potential but has no fitness room but the community center is close by. The breakfast attendants were nice but counters weren't kept clean. Nice assortment of fruit, eggs, pancakes and bagels and muffins. Coffee is available 7am to 11pm but wasn't very good. We walked to the many local coffee shops nearby. Have you ever been to a place where the pictures looked better than the actual place, well this is one of those places? The rooms looked nothing like the pictures you see online. It was small and very outdated. There were paint blemishes and holes in the walls. The AC was very noisy and you can hear car traffic from the street. It was a huge disappointment given the $269/night rate we paid to stay here. I expected more given the rich history of this place. Upon checkout, I expressed my disappointment with the General Manager, Claudia and the best thing she can do was to give me her business card and say the next time you visit, we will give you a better room. Our go to in Coronado Island used to be the Hotel Del Coronado. The Del, as is affectionately named by the locals. However, since it has been under construction, we found this gem instead. Since we first visited this wonderful establishment, we have enjoyed the antique penthouse suite at the Glorietta Bay Inn 3 times. It's a massive suite with a marriage of old world elegance and modern amenities such as a jacuzzi tub. You have your own private elevator which is actually an antique pullman type elevator with a metal gate you have to close in order for it to run. You can eat your breakfast out on the expansive roof patio where you have a 180-degree view of Glorietta bay and the Pacific Ocean in the distance. At the time of our stays, Raj, the manager, and the rest of the staff have always been very helpful. They never failed to make our stay a delight, and we always felt welcomed. I will say that the penthouse suite is quite pricey, exceeding 4 figures for a night's stay, and there is typically a requirement for a minimum number of night's stays needed when making reservations. In any case, this definitely a Coronado Island treasure. And it is worthy of anyone's consideration when staying in Coronado. read more

Room had a musty odor that was overwhelming. Pet stains in several areas of the carpet. Mold all over the tile in the bathroom. Spoke to front desk and we received an apology. They did send someone to clean the mold in the bathroom, although they didn't clean it all. Cool historic place and does not seem to have much pride in keeping the place up and the staff needs trained around customer service. The bar isn't really a bar, no fitness facility , and the hot breakfast was fake egg omelettes, cold undercooked potatoes and cold Canadian bacon. To top it off, the half and half curdled when I put it in my coffee. My opinion is this is a direct reflection of ownership and management. I'll sum it up this way, The Glorietta Bay Inn is the Motel 6 of Coronado, at least the Motel 6 leaves the light on. read more

We had the pleasure to spend some of our 2021 Holidays here! This was the second time in our lives we got to experience this magical little getaway by the water and we had an even better time than the last! About seven years ago our families both wanted to visit from out of town to have a beachside quintessential Cali Christmas. We had always wanted to visit Coronado Island and of course the famed hotel Del Coronado but quickly realized it was out of our price range. Due to some happy hunting by our retired parents they found this as a secondary backup location that could serve as a home base for our holiday tripping with four older folks. This hotel is all about LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! perfect for seeing all the sights just right across the street at the beloved but pricey Hotel Del, for day tripping about the island, and for finding eateries easily. This was the private 'house' that Mr. Spreckles the builder of the famed Hotel Del had built for himself across the street to monitor the building and be a stones throw from his project. The place is a huge Mansion with lots of rooms in that old beautiful style. The rooms in the house are available and are outfitted nicely in the old way. The other rooms sit around the "big house" in a one & two story hotel manner. A major selling point for our folks was the availability of a continental breakfast every morning which is more decent than your average Motel brekky. Coffee Machine was Legit! This last year we enjoyed this lovely place with some of our very good friends and that was fun on a whole new level! We brought all sorts of Christmas decor and lights to decorate inside & outside on our patios. This time our rooms faced the Glorietta Bay and I really liked the sunrises and sunsets off the bay. We enjoyed bringing our bikes and biking around the island even if the weather was a bit drizzly. We really enjoyed being able to grab breakfast at "the big house" as we called it, and eat out on the patio and then begin our day of exploration. The breakfast staff as well as all the other staff we encountered were so kind and helpful made us feel like we were at home in paradise. I really enjoy this place and we will be coming back for the remainder of my life! read more

One of my jobs during my fresh-faced days as a university student was working as a Front Desk Associate at a mid-grade Marriott Hotel. This was not only a 'fun' job but it truly hammered in the inner-workings of a hotel. Basically, in lay man's terms, this means that I have high standards when it comes to hotels because I know the level of service that one should expect. When my 35th weekend getaway to Coronado Island (San Diego) was being booked and I learned I would be staying at the historically-famous Glorietta Bay Inn; I was stoked to say the least. So, how was the visit, you ask? Let us explore... For those of you unfamiliar with the history of Coronado Island, here is a quick rundown. The island was discovered by Spanish conquistadors off the coast of San Diego making it a travel and industrial hub and was named after Spanish royalty (the island's name means 'crowned islands or crowned ones - basically crowned jewels). Eventually purchased by John Spreckles, the son of a sugar baron and a real estate developer in his own right; it basically became the playground of Spreckles and took over the ambiance of a resort, retirement-community- esque island which is how it stands today. The Glorietta Bay Inn was originally the private mansion home of Spreckles and has since been converted into a hotel-inn estate. The penthouse suites, in fact, were the private bedroom of Spreckles and this place is supposedly haunted! You got all that? Great! The Glorietta Bay Inn sits, naturally, on the Glorietta Bay coast across from the equally well-known Hotel del Coronado and invites guests with a stunning, almost colonial mansion with white stone and pillars (this includes the lobby areas and penthouse suites) and cabana-like suites surrounded by lush landscaping, a small but sparkling pool and hot tub, and a large parking lot. Walking onto the property somehow makes you feel classy and there is nothing less than beautiful about this place. We arrived at approximately 2:30 to check-in to our room and was instantly welcomed by the front desk employee (I believe Tim?). Check in was a breeze with the said gentleman being welcoming but efficient at his job AND they upgraded us from a Queen room to a King suite with balcony facing the bay! SCORE! We were informed of the pool rules (closes at dark and one must rent lawn chairs), the free wifi code, the continental breakfast hours, the $15 parking fee (boo!), and the solid assertion that we can call the front desk if we need anything at all during out stay. Point is, I was well-satisfied with the customer service. All of the logistics out of the way; we headed to our room (room 218). Ladies and gents... the Glorietta Bay Inn doesn't play any games cause our room was GORGEOUS! Neutral warm tones met our eyes with ample square footage: the bathroom counter to our right with toilet and tub in separate room, bed and living quarters to the left with a writing nook/ alcove, and a small but lovely sitting balcony. The room looked and felt inviting, clean, and had none of those awkward hotel room feelings where you worry about bed bugs or comfort. It felt like home! The equally amazing thing about the room were all of the small accommodations. First of all, the Glorietta Bay Inn is ideal for female guests as it has all of the small features we can ask for: lights above the sink mirror, a black makeup removal towel, a separate hand/makeup mirror, plenty of electric outlets everywhere, high-quality bottles of shampoo, soap, and lotion, and robes (although a sort of stiff waffle material). There is also a safe for your prized possessions, a mini fridge, modern AC/fan, an off-brand K-cup coffee maker, and a nice Samsung flat screen television. Basically, it has everything you can want and more. The wifi worked with clarity and the bed? SO comfortable with lush pillows! The only room complaints? Although minor, the lotion contained less than 1/4 contents (I didn't ask for more or complain but this should have been something housekeeping catches). Also, although the bathroom was rather clean I saw.. dun dun DUN! PUBIC HAIR in the floor corners as though when sweeping, the hairs stuck to the floors and went to the corners. It was DEFINITELY pubic hair! Oddly enough, this place is so nice that I wasn't even that upset or grossed out. Perhaps cause it was in the corners swept aside? My other issue was that although the breakfast has ample options: fresh fruit, yogurt, bagels, English muffins, oatmeal, and hard boiled eggs...there weren't strictly gluten-free items (I am gluten intolerant). Also, the toaster did NOT toast my suite mate's English muffin. These were minor hiccups and Raj (asst manger) was a doll upon checkout. Overall, this property is amazing: gorgeous, safe, welcoming, and wonderful customer service. I miss it, it was that great! I was planning to stay here but I got sick the night before flying to San Diego. I tested positive for COVID in the morning and had to cancel my trip. You're not supposed to fly on an airplane if you know you have COVID. I called to cancel my reservation and they insisted on charging me for the room. Poor customer service and unethical policy. I will travel to San Diego again soon, but I'll never stay here. FOLLOW UP: After speaking with the manager, Claudia, a few weeks later, the Glorietta Bay Inn agreed to refund 50% of my room rate with the ability to use the other 50% for a future stay. Based on this I revised my rating from 1 star to 4. While I appreciate these actions, it would have been better if the desk staff were trained to deal with these situations and save everybody's time and efforts. read more

The Inn is the Sprekels family mansion. The sugar family. It was built in 1908. It has had some additions to make the Inn larger, contemporary rooms. It's gorgeous. Parking is SO convenient. All the great stuff is within walking distance. Breakfast is served daily. Included. The food is basic, but really good. Hot. Not Luke warm. Fresh juices, hot coffee and tea. Milk if that's your thing. We had scrambled eggs one day and Frittata the next. The eggs and the frittata were hot. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The rooms in the main house are lovely. Modern bathroom fixtures, comfortable bed. Nice TV room, couch and table. Also a TV in the bedroom. Fridge and microwave. A bar sink. Nice touches. We stayed in Lillies room. Second floor. No elevator. Marble steps. Beautiful. The pool area is nice. The pool is heated to 82 degrees. The spa to 102. SCORE! WHO heats their pool anymore??? So nice. We spent an afternoon at the pool. The Inn is across the street from The Hotel Del. I personally would never stay at The Del. Not my thing. But, Easy to walk over and shop or walk the boardwalk and beach. The Inn is right across from Glorietta Bay. Nice view from the pool area, the patio and many of the rooms. The staff are amazing. So helpful. The reservations manager knows the history of the area and the house. He's awesome and so ready to assist guests. Im going to post some pics of the place. If you go to Coronado, stay here at least once! We go to Coronado every year for our anniversary, we will go back to the Glorietta Bay Inn. Loved it! read more

It's a shame that this little hotel at a prime location has horrible and uncomfortable beds. Their worn out mattresses should be replaced years ago. We booked 3 rooms for our family and everyone complained about their bed sagging in the middle. Rooms are little run down, but beds are absolutely unacceptable. Overall not worth the money you paid for the stay. Definitely a very bad experience! read more

Excellent from beginning to end. I have stayed here twice now. the first time in 2009 and now in 2019. The location is amazing, right across from the beach and the Del. GBI makes it easy to book online and the prices vary depending on how many nights you are going to stay, which nights of the week you stay, and the time of the year. they have some deals if you stay Thurs - Mon, etc. Holidays, summer, and spring break are going to have increased prices over other times of the year. This time we got there a few hours before check in and asked if we could check in a little early, they let us check in almost 2 hours early. The person helping me check in was super helpful, friendly, answered all of my questions, told me about all the amenities including the pool & spa, and borrowing things to take over to the beach. I think his name was Raj and he was very knowledgeable and I felt like he appreciated us staying there. The pool and spa are gated, so you need a code to get in but there are towels for you and it is open until 10 pm. The location is amazing, right on main street cutting through Coronado and walking distance to restaurants, shops, the beach, the Coronado community center, etc. The room was not in the main building, but it was very nice, clean, and comfy. It included AC, modern decor, TV, etc. The desk had an electrical outlet and USB plugs built into it. The bed was very comfortable and it was fairly quiet being that we were in the back by the street with cars. There is some parking up front and in 2 other areas in the back, I think the charge was like $15 or $16 per night. The breakfast is complimentary and good. there were many options including eggs, pancakes, yogurt, fruit, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cereal, oatmeal, pastries, etc. I recommend GBI and would definitely stay there again. read more

The place needs a remodel. Rooms are musty with a smell of mildew. WiFi was slow and cut out intermittently, TV and cable was old. Nice location, staff are very friendly, but working with significant limitations. When requesting a room change (my SO has allergies), we were told that the staff is well aware of the issues and some rooms are known to be worse than others, but they plan a remodel in a year or so. There was also ongoing street work which I can't fault the hotel for but it also didn't help things. The only reason I give two stars rather than one is the staff is trying. read more

This is our go too when visiting Coronado. This time we were getting married and stayed in the Spreckels Suite. So gorgeous! It was raining the first day and I was stressed about our plans going wrong. The manager helped make it better that day and everything went off without issues and the weather was great.
