The view from my room overlooked the lawn where all sorts of activities take place, from folks walking dogs to groups posing for wedding party photos. The ground level entrance to the building features a lovely reading room stocked with plenty of newspapers, books and magazines. The room next door offers complimentary beverages and snacks and stocks a good library of brochures highlighting local sights. My room, located on the second floor, was accessible by an elevator and stairs. That level also has a large banquet room, a parlor with a beautiful piano and access to balconies overlooking the lawn. There is also a pantry stocked with breakfast items in the morning including yogurt, fruit bars and cereal. And plenty of coffee (plus coffee makers are in the rooms). Guest can opt for daily maintenance of their rooms to have beds made, towels replaced and the basket of personal care amenities replenished. The desk and free wi-fi made it easy to handle emails and other tasks in the privacy of my room. And the large closet and full-sized dresser amply accommodated my wardrobe. A real highlight for me was the chance to spend mornings jogging around this beautiful campus or strolling over to the collection of boutiques, coffee shops and dining spots that border one end of the university. There were also nearby bikes that could be rented for a cycling excursion as well. A nighttime stroll included a stop at a nearby room in a separate building where Edgar Allan Poe once lived and worked when he attended classes here. The location provided a perfect hub for exploring the area's weekend farmers' market, nearby wineries and scenic hiking spots and historic landmarks. The Colonnade Club is definitely worthy of being on the college honor roll!

A group of 16 of us booked for the weekend and I honestly can't think of enough great things to say. Seriously, everything about this place was AMAZING! I organized the trip, so I got to work with one of the owners, Jesse, to get everything set up. He was helpful, responsive, accommodating, and really kind. I organize a lot for my friends and myself, and this was one of the easiest. Upon arrival we were checked in by the other owner, Gary, who immediately made us feel like we were at home. He gave us a wonderful tour of the property and told us everything we needed to know for a wonderful stay. This property is nestled in the hills of WV and the views are STUNNING! Every space and room is beautifully appointed, really leaning into the upscale rustic vibe you'd expect in a mountain retreat. So many beautiful nooks and crannies to sit and read or play games or just nap. The pool and hot tub are gorgeous and Logan at the pool bar will take amazing care of you! They provide a complimentary breakfast of freshly cooked eggs, meats, and biscuits/scones. The lunch and dinner menus are varied and everything we had was delicious. Our servers, Rain (spelling ??) and Angie were stellar and the ambience was just perfect. Every single one of us left feeling refreshed and we were all sad to leave. Do yourself a favor and make the trek out to Lost River and treat yourself. This place is amazing and I'm already planning my next trip here with my partner.

A winding road through a rocky valley with a mountain stream that flows to the Lost River. Then you turn into the Guesthouse and the stunning main building and cute cabins are so perfectly placed on the property with lovely landscaping. Walk into the main lobby to be greeted by Gary, one of the owners. He was super pleasant and took us on a tour of the property pointing out the dining room, bar, pool (although it was still closed for winter), hot tub and sauna, gym, multiple media rooms, game rooms and lounge areas, and then our room in the Hobson Cabin. The room was well appointed and clean. The shower was beautiful and had great water pressure and temperature. The balcony had wonderful views of the parks close by. A country breakfast is served daily at 9 and is a great start to the day. The dining room is open in the evening for drinks and dinner with a menu for anyone! Gary and Jesse are always close by if you ever need anything and make you feel most welcome. We can't wait to visit again in the summer so we can make full use of the pool and enjoy some nearby hiking!

They also accept pets for a small fee. Just don't leave your pet to bark while your out eating at the amazing restaurants in downtown Crozet. It's a only a few miles away from the Inn, so you won't feel "too far in the woods". We stayed in the farmhouse, but when I get back there again I'd like to stay in the main house (without a dog). The views from the upstairs windows were breathtaking! Looking forward to going back and hiking the trails again. There is a great swimming hole up the road, just ask the innkeepers for directions. This would be an excellent place to hold a family reunion as they have two locations on the same property. The field between the inn and the farmhouse would be great for volleyball/football or any sport really. Looking forward to coming back! My husband…read moreand I both love the outdoors and love to hike, and we were looking for a location that would cater to both of these where we did not need to travel far. When we found the web page for Whispering Oaks, we knew that we had found our place. This home was exactly what we had been looking for! It looked warm and inviting, comfy, spacious, and it was close to many of the things that we wanted to do. We booked right away. The home did not disappoint. We arrived in the evening after dark, but the instructions were so specific for check in that we did not have any delay in finding the home or getting in. Everything was set up perfectly and was spotless. We booked at the beginning of December, and our hosts even set up Christmas cds for us and put movies out as well. We were able to come in and get settled quickly, and before we knew it, it felt like home. We put on a fire (there were firelogs as well as a huge supply of firewood waiting), turned on the television, and enjoyed lounging in the living room. The living room is huge-- the pictures truly do not do it justice. The ceilings are incredibly high and impressive, and it truly does make you feel like you are living outdoors (without the cold that is). The remainder of our stay was wonderful as well. We had all of the kitchen supplies that we needed to cook as well as other basic supplies that we needed to function as if it were our own home. Hiking, our main goal for the weekend, was also incredibly convenient. Our first day in town we ventured to the Nature Center to get oriented for a hike (this was not necessary, however, as our hosts left maps of all of the trails for us in the kitchen, but it is always nice to get a person speaking from experience about the trails nearby). We decided on the Upper Shamokin Falls trail, which did not disappoint- it was both challenging and beautiful. The second day it was a bit drizzly, so we decided to travel the walk around the golf course to the nature trail around the corner. We had an easier trail for this, but it was gorgeous and we still got a few miles in with the walk around the course. There are tons of trails to choose from within a short drive or walk, so no worries on variety. Overall, this has to be one of our favorite places that we have visited in the past few years. If you are looking for a place to stay in the area, Whispering Oaks is a wonderful choice.

The bathroom is shared and the walls are thinnish so if the other guests are noisy and/or incontinent you may not have the best experience, but I was fortunate to be staying here during a quiet holiday time. The house is plant-filled, sustainable (recycling and composting!), green and clean. It could do with a bit of sprucing up, but for $75 a night, who cares? It's excellent value for money. We easily hiked our way around town during our one night's stay here. The owners are like super cool parents that you wish knew when you were a kid. They run an environmentally-friendly home decked out with art by Flame (all available for purchase). They compost, recycle and only use reusable towels. They had cabinets stocked with organic and/or fair trade coffee/hot chocolate. There was locally baked bread which I really made a dent into plus jams and jellies for your convenience. Local eggs were also available so we made a quick scramble with toast in the morning. The ONLY reason I gave this guesthouse 4 stars and not 5 stars is that your experience is mostly based on the other guests here. It was a full house on this particular evening/morning and being that's it is a house and not a hotel, the walls are a bit thin and you can hear everything! The couple in the room next to ours chatted into the wee hours and were up early showering (I woke up at 6:45 am to someone showering in the shared bathroom across the hall - it's a shared bathroom which is only an issue if you need to go wee when someone is showering, like in my case). The other room, occupied by two women, chatted loudly the entire time in the kitchen starting at around 9am, so there was no hope of getting additional sleep. Checkout is 11am so we finally took advantage of our bread and eggs breakfast in the hour before we left. Would definitely come back here in the hopes we had quieter roommates!
