When I called to make the appointment, I was informed that the cost is $75 for the 60-minute foot reflexology and cash for tip (all of which I had no problem). Prior to the massage, I was charged the $75 which was fine. At the conclusion of my massage I paid the employee a 20% tip. As I was walking away, the employee stopped me and pointed to the sign on the wall which identifies their tipping rates. She was making a point that I under tipped her based on the sign and she was insinuating I pay her more. The sign listed a 60-minute massage as a tip rate of $20 (which is more than 20%). Mind you, the sign did not contain language such as suggested or recommended. Furthermore, their website says nothing about a mandatory tip requirement. Per MA state law, businesses cannot require a tip on services nor can employers demand/request a tip (unless it is a service charge or for large parties). Tips are considered discretionary and are up to the customer. While it was my goal to leave this experience relaxed and rejuvenated, I ended up leaving offended and annoyed.

Massage therapy is a very demanding profession. It takes a toll. I assume that's why I've had successive cancellations at EM - 3 in a row in the past month alone, with three different therapists, followed by a recent 4th. I get it. It's really tough. What's totally weird is that this never happened to me with any of the self-employed LMTs I've seen in the past, going all the way back to 1986. I get the advantages of the corporate structure for all concerned but recoil at the persistent upselling. The folks at the front desk mean well and are clearly hewing close to the corporate overlord's script (sell, sell, sell!). I have cancelled my membership and will monitor how things go for my husband before recommending we cancel his. It's a tough business. I get that. The therapists are stellar, to a person.
