Liz and the other yoga instructors at Advanced Health Massage and Yoga have helped me find a new way of stretching and relaxing that has changed my life! I'm a 51 year old, male runner with ridiculously tight hamstrings, hips, and IT bands like every other older (male and female) runner I know. After a stress fracture side-lined me for 6 months, my physical therapist told me that if I wanted to run for years to come with minimal or no injuries, that I would need to do yoga. My PT warned me against impersonal gyms, killer to follow DVD's, and large centers. I would need specialized, hands-on training from a smaller, more patient studio. Liz, and the other instructors at Advanced, have been perfect for my needs, and the strength and flexibility I've seen in just three months has already helped me lower my 5K race times and I sleep and wake up more comfortably. They mix just the right amount of meditation and stretching in a quiet and calming atmosphere. It was also hard to beat their $20 for 20 days new member special. I went 8 times over the 20 days for only $20! Of course by then I was ready to sign up for the 10x card which makes the prices of a session only $12.00 Again, hard to beat. Prior to opening her center, Liz worked for several years as a massage therapist in a local chiropractic practice and offers shiatsu and cranio facial massage, and what I would term sports therapeutic massage. Lots of stretching out and aligning my body correctly, and solving issues with areas that are just chronically sore and bowed in from stress, like my shoulders and neck. And since Liz knows me from yoga class, she has real insight into my needs and issues. I would highly recommend you check out Advanced Heath Massage and Yoga if you are in the greater Billerica area. Also check out their Facebook page, that's actually how I decided on this yoga center. The comments there gave off a really pleasant vibe.

My favorite classes tend to be more strength and holding of postures, not heated flow or power yoga, although they do have a class or two like that as well. They also occasionally offer kids yoga. Lin is a professionally licensed therapist, and her diplomas decorate the walls in the massage room she used for us. Although we unfortunately couldn't schedule a same-time massage couples session, Lin DID try to arrange it for us, but no such luck. Just for the effort involved, I was pleased! Don't be fooled where the entrance is! It's to the left side of the building! I actually ended up calling Lin because I was that much of a space cadet. She was patient and met us at the front lobby. Since chivalry isn't dead, my babe let me indulge in my session first! Lin even showed us a heated floor yoga room that she invited him to meditate in while I was away; super awesome! Don't be shy! Go to the closet and grab a mat and be one with your breath! The massage: It was nothing short of AMAZING! She is incredibly skilled and worked my troublesome back and tight neck. The hour flew by, like it always does, and Lin was very in-sync as to whether she was applying too much or too little pressure. Be sure to speak up - she encourages it! She combines many techniques (I don't know the names of all the styles), definitely deep enough to be therapeutic and solve nasty muscular aches and pains but she also does yummy feel-good relaxation stuff so that you leave the place feeling all floppy and happy. It is not just her technique that does it tho' -- Lin is the most warm, good hearted person you will ever meet and I always look forward to going back. She runs the center with a huge heart and amazing positive energy. I've also attended Margi Green's terrific Relax and Lengthen class, which is a hybrid of her own creative design and a great experience. The center offers all kinds of other services as well, and many community-oriented events, some of which I've attended. The place is always warm and welcoming (and Lin keeps the place in great condition. Her gardens and beautiful too!); I totally recommend checking it out.
