Dr. Stephen Gaw's precision with my daughter's scoliosis brace improved her scoliosis curve (lumbar…read moreto thoracic) from 29 degrees to 19 degrees over a 2 year period. This was not easy, as the first year on the brace is the most difficult and required a lot of commitment on her part since she had to wear it for 17 hours a day; she was in 8th grade when she started. After 2 years on the brace, when she was about done growing, she only had to wear it at night for 1 year. At the checkup the following year (3 years now), her spinal curve stayed the same. Then, her orthopedic doctor took her completely off the brace and recommended she wear it only as needed until she's 18, but it is comfortable enough so my daughter chose to wear it nightly because she knows it helps her keep a straight spine and it's so worth it. To put the degrees of curve into perspective, at 29 degrees, there is a visible bump on one side of the lower spine (more visible when she bends over), like a little mound due to the rotation of the spine. At 19 degrees, it isn't noticeable at all; her back is perfectly normal with no bump whatsoever. When we first found out she had scoliosis, we researched all types of treatment, but in the end we trusted her pediatric orthopedic, who recommended Dr. Gaw and his scoliosis bracing technology to us. Dr. Gaw goes above and beyond to make even the most minor adjustments to the brace to make it as comfortable as he can for my daughter. This is important because any little thing can scratch the skin and irritate the body and adds another reason for a teen to avoid wearing it. The brace works only as good as the number of hours that are put on the body. Dr. Gaw worked with our orthopedic doctor to ensure a tight fight via x-rays. He is only required to be at the orthopedic office the first time the brace is fitted, however, there were many times we had checkups with the orthopedic doctor and Dr. Gaw was there to check on us because he happened to be at the office that day. He is one of those gem of doctors who truly cares about his patients and want his patients to get better and move on to bigger and better things, losing the brace as they grow. Words cannot express how happy and appreciative we are to have our daughter's spine healthy. The only regret is we wished we had discovered her scoliosis sooner; then could've gotten it back to perfection.

I went back and forth with Fountain Orthotics for months on whether my orthotics were covered by insurance. Eight months after I was given the initial referral and going back and forth with them about my coverage, my doctor asked our insurance to change the provider. That was when they changed their tune and admitted that my insurance would indeed cover them in full. I had put in a deposit which took another 4 months to get back because even though they said they would automatically refund me the money once they received the insurance payment, I had to call them to get it back. Very frustrating!

Diagnosed as spondylolisthesis but he didn't want to do surgery right away. We tried PT for awhile but when that didn't work, surgery was the only answer to fix my issue. I was hesitant but I shouldn't have been. Both Dr Burdi and Dr Tyler did amazing work and my nerve pain is completely gone.

I had surgery to fuse L4 and L4 on October 9, 2025. I've…read morewaited until now (9 months) to write my review because I wanted to be sure how good my outcome is. My surgery was done by Dr. Burdi who I've determined has done a very good job. Prior to my surgery Dr. Burdi and Tyler Waldron, his PA, did X-rays and MRI's, and also treated my back pain with non-surgical methods such as physical therapy, home exercises, pain meds, and injections. I had severe instances of back pain and sciatica going back many years often times going down my leg, and I was originally treated by Dr. Evangelista. Since the many years of therapy and medicines had not resulted in significant or lasting improvement, Dr Burdi determined that I was a good candidate for surgery because X-ray and MRI images showed L4 and L5 were offset and would pinch on nerves. There were many times that I had to cancel my golf because of lower back pain. Dr. Burdi's surgery coordinator, Pat Weber, was excellent coordinating everthing and helping me with any questions. So how was surgery? I was surprised that I did not have any severe pain after surgery either from my back or from the surgery. I did have some pain, but it was not severe at all. I only took oxycodone and muscle relaxants for 4 days. Then I switched to extra strength tylenol and anti-inflammatory pills. Stitches were removed after 1 week I think. I did have a problem witih the steri-strips coming off every day because of the friction of the back brace on my shirt which kept rubbing against the steri-strips. That caused me some anxiety, but the skin healed fine. I went through physical therapy for 5 months, was careful to avoid bending, lifting, and twisting, but still had some moderate lower back pain and sciatica, although nothing severe. Dr. Burdi said it could easily take 6 months to heal, and he would order another MRI at 6 months if I still had pain. I still had some pain at 6 months, and was still taking anti-inflammatory pills 3 to 4 days/week so I did have another MRI. Dr. Burdi and Tyler evaluated the MRI and were certain the surgery was completely successful; there was adequate room around the nerves. Dr. Burdi explained that not only could it still be healing, but that I do have arthritis among the vertebrae above and below the fusion that can cause some pain, but that it was not a candidate for surgery. He referred me to Dr. Washburn for further evaluation and non-surgical treatment. In the meantime, since my MRI showed the surgery outcome was excellent, I started golfing again. I found that as long as I continued taking an anti-inflammatory pill 3 or 4 days/week, I could golf with just minor pain during and after. I was amazed and happy that I was golfing again. I did see Dr Washburn. He evaluated me and the MRI images. He said that it appeared to him that I was still healing, and some people take a year to completely heal. He recommended no further treatment, but rather to wait a couple more months to see how I feel. So since then, I have continue to feel better. I now take an anti-inflammatory pill only 1 or 2 days per week, primarily when I'm practicing golf or golfing. I still get some lower back pain at times but nothing severe. Usually after twisting by back or lifting relatively heavy stuff. I've found I also get upper back aches which I guess is a result of compensating for the reduced flexibility at the L-4/L-5 fusion and the arthritis. I am feeling good enough that I can do pretty much anything with only minor aches and pains. I am going to wait the full year, and if I'm still having pain, I will go back to Dr. Washburn for injections or ablations which are the likely next steps if needed. I am glad I had the surgery and I would highly recommend Dr. Burdi, Tyler Waldron (PA), Pat Weber (Surgery Coordinator), Dr. Washburn, and the rest of the staff at Community Orthopedic.

I wish Yelp would let this old lady correct my mistakes but SCOS is a fantastic orthopedic group you have everybody you need right there. I want a particularly mention Amanda a check-in and her attention to detail and customer kindness and are willingness to make sure that all of our other doctors involved get the information and faxes and diagnostics that we need to give us the best care and prognosis as possible. Dawn the office manager is an earth angel and she runs the office like she would run a household with love and care patients and understanding. I'd like to mention Mr handlebar mustache who took my six x-rays by the name of Christopher with a k who took attention to protecting my thyroid gland with an x-ray shield and made me comfortable with the movements I had to make that were very hard for my double lumbar fusion and hip replacement surgeries. I can't say enough about the progress that this office makes towards making everything the best for its patients. I'm in a very high level of pain and don't do pain meds and I don't know how to use my phone very well but I do have a picture of myself with Dr Montgomery today and I also have a picture of myself with Dr veneziano who does the steroid injections which I will get another one Monday May 18th 2026.
