For the most part it has been excellent I am way up in years and go there two times a week. I am currently having a big problem and have tried contacting them and have left several messages with no return. They have a monthly even usually for husband and wife. I went for my regular visit yesterday morning and stayed for a monthly get together My big coat which i hang up was missing and I have made many calls but no one at the facility has even spoken to me. I called their helpline in 2022. My experience was upsetting enough to still be memorable. The man who answered was very cold and hung up on me early in the call while I was in the middle of speaking. I was not insulting, threatening, in "hysterics," or an any way deserving of such a response from a "helper." Yes, burnout is real, and bad days are real, but if the alleged purpose of your volunteer position is helping others with their own bad days and burnout, and you're not able to make an attempt at doing that--or worse, likely to cause more distress to the distressed people calling in--maybe take a break, take the day off, quit? I hope that they've improved significantly in the years since. read more

On June 28th 2023 I called the Friendship Line on 1-800-971-0016 at 6:31 p.m. I noticed a woman answered the phone and she told me that her name is Ms. Tiffany. I think she is a volunteer at the Friendship Line. I noticed she was nice and respectful to me. She asked me "how are you doing today?" and I told her "not good I am having a bad day." She told me "I"m sorry to hear that. Can you tell me what is wrong with you?" I asked her "can I say a prayer on the phone while you listen to me?" She told me yes. I noticed while I was saying my prayer, she interrupted me by saying "wow I didn't know that happened! Did that situation happened here or somewhere else?" I told her "Ma'me I am still saying my prayer." I noticed this woman continued to talk to me like she couldn't hear me and I had to tell her twice that I wasn't finish saying my prayer and she finally allowed me to finish my prayer. I noticed that i was almost finish saying my prayer and she interrupted me again by saying "sir, you need to rap up your prayer because it is almost time for me to end the call so I can try to talk to the other people who chooses to call this number." This woman was rude, disrespectful, and unprofessional. I didn't say anything I just hanged up the phone. I tried to call this number back at 6:32 p.m. I noticed a man answered the phone and I don't remember him giving me his name and his job title, but I remember that this was the same man that I talked to the last time when I had a bad experience with this number. I remember he wrote down my complaint and he told me that he will send the information to his manager or supervisor. Now I noticed that this man didn't help me and he acted like he didn't want to get the information to give it to his manager or supervisor. It was so bad that I hanged up the phone. It make sense that this company and some of the people who worked there are unprofessional. I will never call this number again. read more

I volunteer on the Friendship Line. We provide emotional support to seniors(60+), their caregivers and anyone suffering a crisis. So many of our clients tell me they appreciate our professionalism and friendliness. They also appreciate being able to talk with someone and not be judged, knowing that the conversation is just between them and us. I actually applied here online and the person that contacted me was rude af! I believe she's the senior recruiter. She emailed me asking my availability and said she will confirm with me for phone screening. I gave her my availability which is monday. She never confirmed the day and there was no time. On that Monday, she called me and left a voicemail, it was an unregistered number and I wasn't expecting any important calls because it was never confirmed. I'm listening to the voicemail like ... WTH, are you serious?! ?? Her exact message was "we are scheduled to speak today and I am disappointed you're not answering your phone" it was the delivery of her message and attitude/tone that got me. First of all, she asked for my availability, I gave it to her, she never confirmed. Next, she calls and says we were scheduled to speak today and she's disappointed I'm not answering my phone but how would I know if it was never confirmed ?? Monday wasn't confirmed and there was no time scheduled and no confirmation and I guess she expected me to answer??? Anyways, you are representing the company and how you treat/talk to people shows how the company is. If you're the big boss and that's how you talk to people,no one would want to work there. This program may be just fine for 99% of families who use it. Unfortunately, this program turned into a surreal, nightmarish experience after my mother went missing from this center for 18 hours in 2012. (The center is on Geary Blvd. in San Francisco and NOT the Marin location, which I know nothing about.) I dropped her off at IOA at 9 am one day in December 2012, only to return around 3 pm and learn that she had just been discovered missing. Surveillance cameras show she simply walked out of the center (a receptionist let her out) at 10 am and no one at the center noticed for 5 hours. She was found wandering on California Street at 4:15 a.m. the next morning by police. For me, this was one of the worst experiences I have ever gone through -- and one I should have never had to go through. I contacted state regulators to complain -- only to be told that the total fines for 3 separate violations by IOA related to this case would total about $150 (roughly half of what it costs me to be in a carpool lane illegally). I did not come to the decision to write a review on Yelp lightly. It took months of consideration on my part and in the end, I felt that airing my grievance publicly would be the best way to ensure this never happens again to another family... read more

We had an awesome trio of caregivers who consistently stayed with us over a 10 week period. These women not only carried out all the tasks involved, they all coached, cajoled, and cheered my husband to slowly move toward more independence. He looked forward to their visits and they became an essential part of our daily life. His recovery would not have moved along had it not been for their competence and concern. Through it all, the IOA Care Coordinator kept in regular contact, and I knew she "had our back". Having run a private care organization in my career, I know how challenging it is to do it well and match clients with compatible caregivers. IOA "nailed" it, not by happenstance, but by intentional leadership and selecting outstanding caregivers.Our caregivers,and others like them, are the unsung heroes of our field and IOA's ability to recognize that is the key to your success. I know firsthand that IOA does an outstanding job, but this experience surpassed even my expectations. Beyond being impressed, we are deeply grateful for IOA's role in lightening our caregiving journey and supporting my husband's recovery. I attended IOA's cable car Christmas Caroling event on December 6th and truly enjoyed it. The event embodies the spirit of the holidays; we traveled to seniors' homes and surprised them with small gifts and Christmas carols. There were teary eyed moments as we cheered up folks who really deserve a friendly face. The event ended with food, laughter, wine and a great raffle. read more

As I lamented the commercial corruption of the holiday season, the Institute on Aging Cable Car Caroling event brought the true spirit of Christmas back to life for me. On one almost magical, heartwarming afternoon, our group of friends rode cable cars in a light San Francisco rain to the homes of seniors who don't get too many visitors, where we sang carols and gave out small gifts. Reaching out made me reflect on the meaning of life and the importance of community. At our return we all ate and drank together, a fitting end to a day of human connection. I had the tacos al pastor and con carnitas from the taco truck and they were awesome. I also tried some of the chicken and tortilla dish in the ample buffet and it was delicious. I highly recommend this event, a holiday gem and a great new tradition for me! read more

.I was disappointed by some of the things I observed here. They have an aide who is bossy and loudmouthed to the seniors. She made a senior who uses a cane carry two bags of diapers over to the door of her residence! Their unreliable transportation program is very frustrating. Somebody told me that they waited two hours to be picked up one time even though a driver had been available who could have picked them up. The manager must have been on smoke-break. I hope I caught them on a bad day! read more

Hi- I recently joined IOA at a Christmas Event with my 3 yr old (we took cable cars to various retirement homes and sang christmas carols). The event was fantastic. But what even more fantastic was the IOA staff- they were incredibly warm and friendly; and what stood out the most was that they all loved their jobs (and most of them had been there for 10+ years). The programs/services they offer seem incredible, and I can say the staff they hire are very passionate and genuine about wanting to provide the BEST care and resources for the aging and their families. read more

The Institute on Aging Director of Fiduciary Services allowed my 91 year old client to sign a contract when she told them several times that she wanted to return all powers back to her son after her daughter tried to take them away using two attorneys, two fiduciaries, an advocate and a clinical psychologist who declared in his report that "Sarah" was unable to manage her financial situation. The Director made Sarah a client anyway and botched the job. After three months there were bills left unpaid: the phone was turned off, and her insurance went unpaid! Now, after receiving a "cease and desist letter" from Sarah's attorney, and multiple requests to terminate services, the Director refuses to hand over Power of Attorney! Sarah cannot get to her assets in one of her bank accounts, neither can she get to her Social Security income the last two months, which is necessary to pay her monthly bills. They have shown a lack of competence by several mishaps and their refusal to hand the control back over to Sarah demonstrates a hidden agenda. Now we must work through a court. They claim to listen to the elderly, respect the elderly, but they don't. Now I'm wondering if they plan on taking Sarah's money somehow. Why else would they hold on to it? read more
