Janaka (steve lorand) is back regularly on the schedule which = a really reliable consistent traditional IYI hatha yoga class; every week, he's leading a 90 minute and also a $10 60 minute class, he's also sub'ing often. Chandra came back for several weeks and as Janaka said, "she instructs a class exquisitely." her classes are a real traditional IYI hatha yoga = thorough class. Pricing at IYI has changed radically in the last few years. Ok, I get it, prices go up. What sends me over the edge is the new "monthly" memberships are charged every 28 days. That means you are charged 13 times in a year, not 12. And individual classes are now $25. So much for staying affordable. read more

There are all different types of yoga studios in the city, so depending on your mood (or how many yoga passes you have lol), this studio may work for you on days you need a lighter, less vigorous yoga practise. The yoga studio is actually above the store, so you can check-in at the store and then proceed upstairs to the yoga practising rooms. I think there is also a 3rd floor, but I didn't get to explore it. On the second floor, there is a good-sized women's changing room with also 3 bathrooms. All the yoga equipment comes with the purchase of the class ($17), so it is nice that you don't have to pay extra to rent a yoga mat. I came for the Hatha I/II class last night. I knew that it would be a slower paced class, so I wasn't expecting a sweat dripping class. Sometimes it is ok to switch it up a bit. The instructor was pretty good and I felt I got in some good stretches. We did many sun salutations and then moved into a series of triangle poses. And afterwards, also some inversions. I definitely worked but also I could've used more stretching, like pigeon and handstands. But I understand the nature of the class. The class was 90 minutes, so be prepared to do a lot of chanting. Chanting in class isn't really my thing, but it was nice to just have some space for meditation. You don't have to go along with what everyone else is doing. Yoga is for you and you set aside time for yourself to recenter and focus. I will be back to finish up a 2nd class and every now and then when I feel like I need something lighter than Vinyasa/Bikram yoga, I'll come here. read more

Chanting is my LEAST favorite part of any yoga class. I have a hard time personally accepting a skinny blonde woman leading a room of other white people in a round of affected Sanskrit with total solemnity. Can any of us speak Sanskrit?? I've taken classes (elsewhere) with an instructor who would sing short chants in Sanskrit - she had a BEAUTIFUL voice - but that context was always troubling. I like my yoga athletic and the intent secular, because any other way and you run the risk of co-opting bits of a culture you've made no effort otherwise to take seriously (other than as a commodity, part of a transaction, and in claiming a right to declare it "authentic" or not). /rant So, I didn't expect to like IYI much. But in the interest of challenging my own assumptions, I tried them out. IYI has 6 practice rooms across 3 floors in a big house of a studio. The space is older, clean and peaceful. The first floor "lobby" is a bookstore/shop with the smell of incense hanging in the air. The front desk was extremely kindly and efficient, and I was on my way upstairs in no time. Women's locker room on the 2nd floor includes bathroom stalls and lockers; bring or rent a lock. Thin, heavy mats are free to borrow in the classroom. The variety of classes and number of instructors is mindboggling. Unlike many yoga studios which have distinct morning, lunchtime, and evening periods, IYI offers tons of classes all day. The fact that many presumably non-South-Asian instructors have adopted Sanskrit-ish names is irritating, but this isn't the place to nitpick about that kind of thing. As others have mentioned, IYI focuses on a more "spiritual" aspect of yoga. Integral Flow (Level 2) was somewhat slower than your typical hatha class. But it was so relaxing in the end! Dressed all in white, Alan led our half-empty room (Monday at 6:15pm and only 7 students in a room that could've comfortably held 12) with chants at the beginning and end of class. Newbies are given cheatsheets and told they can either listen or participate. Poses were basic, and moved slowly but deliberately (but the slowness may have been exacerbated by a particularly disruptive, and advanced, student who kept needing adjustments AND blowing her nose...). Alan walked up and down the room and made sure every student always had proper form. He himself began and ended class with a personal meditation in front of a shrine at the head of the room. Other students were mostly women in their 30s and upward. I wouldn't make IYI my go-to studio because the philosophy is not what I'm looking for. I'd either go insane with moral fury, or (worse) become blind to the implications of my practicing by their style. But they do take yoga as a philosophy very seriously, and admittedly aren't as exploitative as they could be about it. Those seeking deep, focused sessions and strong instruction with conscious adherence to tradition would enjoy this place a lot. read more

I used to be one of those silly people who scoffed at yoga. I used to call it the New York City version of being a Born Again Christian -- everyone who does it gets obsessed with it and talks on and on about how yoga totally changed their life and how you should totally come to their yoga studio and then you can see the light, too. Then I went to India for 2 months. Even in India, I kept meeting (Western/White) yogis and yoginis who talked of nothing but their practice and how what I really need to do is scrap the rest of my travel plans and go to Rishikesh to do yoga. I kept scoffing. India seeped into my bones. I got to where I could spend 20 hours on a train and it would zip by like 20 minutes. Nobody and nothing could get to me. I was perfectly at peace never drinking alcohol, squatting to pee, and not a Scharfenberger chocolate bar or a Cowgirl Creamery brie to be found. Then I came home. Suddenly I was back in this big crazy city and that sense of peace I'd had in the face of a thousand inconveniences faded faster than the henna tattoos on my hands. You know what I needed? I needed yoga! After a little questing to find the right studio, I settled on giving Integral a try. And then I came down with the flu. 2 weeks later, however, I was sitting on a mat at one of their Saturday afternoon introductory sessions, chanting "Hari Om" without even breaking a giggle. Now I try to go every week. Integral is very much about the spiritual rather than physical side of yoga, and the classes I've attended contain almost as much pranayama and meditation as asana practice. You will probably not break a sweat here. While I haven't found the spiritual stuff to be in any way proselytizing, cultish, or overbearing, it is there. If you think meditation = naptime or feel weird chanting in Sanskrit, this might not be the studio for you. Mega-tip: one of my favorite things about Integral is the 7:45 pm hatha classes, especially the Friday night hatha 1. Nobody wants to go to yoga on Friday night, they want to be at happy hour. Which means a practically empty class. Even better? Right now all their 7:45 classes cost only $10. I've never had a Friday night class with more than 5 or 6 people in it, which means tons of one-on-one attention. It's easily the best yoga deal in the city, better even than Yoga To The People because it's so empty. read more

"Briana, Yoga 1 is for wimps. Take Yoga 2." Obviously my friend doesn't know me well. My ass was kicked by yoga 2. There is no denying it's a great class...intimate, but not empty, a clean studio, and an instructor that isn't afraid to reposition you when you're an inflexible doofus that can't make your body twist. I was sore for days, and laughed for days when thinking about the chanting that occurred during the session. I'm sorry, but I cannot take the om-shanti shizz seriously, and it's the only thing that is stopping me from returning. I don't want to embarrass myself my bursting out laughing like I did last time. Better safe than sorry! If you can handle/like chanting, this is definitely a great place for you! I'll stick with Yoga to the People for now... read more

Review 700, something memorable: Picture it, the year is 1998, Madonna's Ray of Light hits the street and with it this campaign to portray her as Spiritual Girl more than Material Girl. Well, everyone in Chelsea was catching the yoga bug and I was no exception. Thankfully, I was able to start with it at Integral Yoga Institute and not some gym teaching it as a trendy fad like striptease or as something just to get a hot body like Madonna's. IYI is based in the 5,000 spiritual teachings of Yoga Masters and is presented that way. For its bit of RocknRoll Relevance, IYI was founded by Swami Satchidananda, the guru who kicked off Woodstock and the founder of Yogaville in Virginia. This Chelsea location was recommended by a work colleague. Immediately, the space was both welcoming and challenging to my preconceived notion of what Yoga was all about. Done on carpets not hardwood floors, the institute radiates peace and the lobby if full of "saints" of various traditions including Christ, St. Francis of Assisi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandhi as well as yoga masters. Raised in a Franciscan environment, I was a big fan and felt like everything I was looking for was right here. As a seeker, I was inspired that they had all the religious symbols displayed around a lotus with the motto "The Truth is One, the paths are Many". Wow! And in that spirit I took my towel, sat down and waited to bend like a pretzel. Yet it wasn't like that at all. The teacher, no Madonna body but more like a Michael Moore body came in and gently welcomed us. We were slowly taken through a carefully designed series of poses and offered variations for those with an advanced practice. I thought everything was a challenge but not all that hard. I could not touch my toes. No matter, we still grooved on and "There is no judgment or competition, with a neighbor or with yourself" Wow, I thought, this is so different than the gym, or heck with life in general! At the end of the class came savasana, like a 5 hour nap done in 5 minutes. We then moved from the restful pose to breathing exercises, meditation and chanting. Wow these people really are hard core about this stuff I thought. When I opened my eyes I felt like I was looking on the world with new eyes. And I haven't looked back since. Yoga has helped me to find my true nature and to strive towards that at all times. I'm not sure I achieve that as often as I would like but I know the destination and I have the roadmap. I have taken thousands of yoga classes since that first day and was so uninspired by some that I decided to become a yoga teacher to share what had been my first experience with folks. So in 2002, at the encouragement of the one Yoga teacher in San Mateo who I thought "got it" about Yoga I agreed to enter Teacher training. Funny enough, she gave me the application to do teacher training at "this school in San Francisco" which turned out to by Integral Yoga Institute San Francisco. My life was transformed and came full circle. Nearly ten years later I still look with great fondness on this school and how my life has changed because of it. read more

Something that people don't often realize is that traditional yoga is an 8-Limbed Path that involves steps such as breath work, moral observances, and meditation. Asana practice, or the physical poses, is just one of those limbs. However, many Western yoga schools (e.g. vinyasa, power yoga, etc.) focus solely on asana, with brief touches on meditation and breath work. Integral Yoga, as founded by Sri Swami Satchinanda, aims to create a practice that fulfills all limbs of yoga while integrating the different paths of yoga (raja, hatha, bakhti, etc). Consequently, the classes at the Integral Yoga Institute always involve chanting, meditation, and pranayama (breath work) in addition to asana practice. If you're looking for a class that solely focuses on asana practice, Integral Yoga is probably not the style for you. But, if you want a class that involves all yogic practices in an effort to help you achieve greater inner peace and, eventually, samadhi, Integral is perfect. It's relaxing, comforting, and accepting, regardless of your physical abilities or religious/spiritual background (one of the founding principles of Integral is the idea of "One Truth, Many Paths"). No matter what your level, Integral helps you develop an array of yogic practices that calm and soothe the body and mind so that you can access the supreme calm inside of you. read more

I will start of this review by admitting that I am a big fan of Integral Yoga Institute, and I won't have anything negative to say in this review. I will caution you that if you are looking for a strenuous workout in which you will struggle to engage in and hold strenuous poses that will leave you out of breath and with fatigued muscles, then this is not the yoga studio for you. I am not knocking yoga as exercise, but there are plenty of opportunities for challenging, even competitive, yoga practices in the city and practices grounded in mindfulness and a commitment to spiritual growth first and mastering the asanas second are far and few between. If you are looking for a relaxing, yet invigorating, mix of chanting, asanas, breathing exercises, mediation, and deep relaxation, then like myself, you will love Integral Yoga. If you are interested in moving beyond basic poses, there are opportunities to do so in the upper level classes, but you will always be encouraged to work within your own comfort zone, and you will never feel pressured by the instructors or other students to try poses that you are not ready for or which you feel could be risky for your body. The classes typically follow a set sequence of activities and poses, so if you are beginner, you can easily develop a home practice based on the Integral approach. I typically take the Level I class, and I particularly enjoy the 7:15pm Friday night class, because it is a nice way to enter the weekend, the class is rarely crowded, and it is lovely to stretch on the top floor of the Institute amidst the sparkling lights of the City. You do not have to bring your own mat--all of the mats, bolsters, straps, and blocks you need are available in the studio, and you do not need to pay an extra fee to use them. They also have a health food store next to the studio, so if you want to continuing doing nice things for your body after class, you can pick up organic produce and other foods. I highly recommend the Restorative classes. I have taken them when I am feeling tense and when I was recovering from an injury (a running injury--not a yoga injury--they are very safety minded at Integral). They fill up fast though, so you may want to use the online reservation system for the Restorative classes. For all the other classes, you can typically walk in 10-15 minutes before the class. Their fees are $17 per class which is a bit steep in my frugal book, but you can save by purchasing their introductory offer if you are a new student (3 classes for $30), buying a pack of classes, or taking the $5 Community Class on Saturday nights at 6:15pm. read more

This place is obviously really great for some people, but it was not a good fit for me, and here's why: 1. Not enough of a work-out. I've being doing yoga for a long time, and started out with three years of hatha, so I was really excited to find a hatha place in New York. But none of the 3 levels of classes I took were strenuous enough to unlock the benefits of a vigorous workout. 2. A little too much chanting. Hey, I love meditation, I want to work on it. But chanting for a really long time is really not my bag. I'm not dissing it for other people, but I'm not exactly soothed by the sound of my own voice trying to approximate a language I don't understand. 3. The teachers were so-so. Sometimes I get so caught up by the enthusiasm or warmth of a teacher that I continue to go to a class just to be in the halo of their glow. But of the four teachers I met here, they didn't really seem to observe the class. It felt like they were leading the class with blindfolds on... like we were all invisible. I stopped going here about a week into my month-long Groupon for this place. I tried some other places in the city, and finally ended up at Yoga to the People. Which, I think everyone who gave Integral Yoga Institute a 5 star will scoff at for not being "real" or whatever. But it makes me sweat and feel really good on a consistent basis, so it's a good fit for me. read more

I only made it to three classes of my monthly unlimited Living Social deal. I didn't realize how much chanting/meditation/breathing exercises were involved in their classes. At least 15 min before and after each class. This is definitely not a Vinyasa flow class, nor do they hold poses long enough to be challenging. I started off with a Level 1/II, then a Lunch (1 hr - still lots of nose breathing), and then an Advanced Class (definitely a bit faster, but still slow overall). I have never left a yoga class early. I did it 2 out of the 3 times here - and I got not so great looks. They should cue the class at the moment it's appropriate to leave before the ending meditation and understand that some people may not want to participate in this part, but also don't want to be rude. Lesson learned. This is not the studio for me. I didn't feel challenged physically or mentally. It may be great for beginners or folks who are into more meditation. Oh! And all the instructor's wear white. This just pushed me over the weird, cult-ish edge. read more

I'm really sorry to say I was not impressed by this place, despite all the raving reviews. I chose to go here because I'm fairly new to Yoga and wanted some instruction to make sure I was doing poses correctly. I called ahead to ask whether or not the level I class would be a good fit for me, and I explained that I was looking for a workout and some basic instruction. I really wasn't interested in the chanting, meditation and deep relaxation and the receptionist that answered the phone didn't mention any of that to me, nor did she tell me how slow the class would be even though I had said I wanted something a little faster-paced. Perhaps it's my fault that I didn't know what Hatha was or realize what kind of class I was taking, but the receptionist really misled me as to what the class would entail. On top of that, the people in my class were incredibly strange, and one made a number of weird comments to me before the class started. The people in the class were also on the older side, not that it's a problem, just something I noticed. I'm not one to feel uncomfortable around weirdos, and I was uncomfortable. That says something to me. read more

I love this place! The atmosphere is very yoga-y and walking in just makes me feel calm and happy. The pricing is mid-range, not too bad. They have a lot of other extra curricular activities. For example, I was here for a 3 week meditation class (once a week). I have to say that not everyone will like their classes. First of all, it's hatha based, which means that it's not as fast and as intensive as your vinyasa classes. If you are a more experience yogi you should skip the level I classes (it's so easy you can do it while sleeping!) and got for the level I/II or II. They are still not sweat inducing classes, but they move a little faster and do some more advanced poses. Almost all their classes are 1 1/2 hours long. If anyone read my other yoga studio reviews, you'd know that I am not a fan of classes greater than 1 hour. However, here it's 1 hour yoga and 30 minutes of meditation. So if you don't like meditation, this place would not be for you either. Of course you can leave right before they start the meditation, but I try to avoid that as it seems somewhat disrespectful. The yoga also follows specific move (kind of like Bikram), but the teachers tend it vary it in between, more so in the higher level classes. The only bad thing (if it's bad at all) are the times. There are not a lot of options, well, there is, but nothing that really suites my schedule because I like a more advanced class and because their last class starts at 7:15pm (6:15pm on weekends), so it's not very convenient if I have to work late. Conclusion: You should try this place out if you like hatha or are just starting out in yoga and need to move slowly. Also, if you want to get into meditation, this is a great place to take yoga classes. May not be a favorite of experienced hard core vinyasa practitioners. read more

In trying to branch out and do something new and healthy, I decided to give Yoga a try. What drew me to this place is their $10 7:45 classes. I scoured all of NYC and there is no better deal than this. I went into yoga thinking it'd give you a decent workout and a stretch but this is so much more. During their 1 and a half hour class, they touch on meditation, chanting, asanas, and relaxation techniques. I felt a little weird with the chanting at first but if you throw yourself into it, you actually find that it helps with relaxation. After the class, you feel so relaxed, like you just finished a massage. But your class also highly depends on your teacher. Most are good to amazing with one that I had who was kinda awful. So if you have a bad experience, don't fret, try someone else. read more

I checked out this location for the first time today and found it to be ok. The class I took was an evening Restorative class. I'd been highly stressed the entire week and needed a restorative class, not a vinyasa one. I searched and only this studio seemed to offer that which is why I came here :) Compared to the other studios I've been to in the city, I felt like this place was targeted towards an older age group and those with injuries. Studio is clean and has three flowers and large locker rooms. Ceilings are really high which I like. My complaint is that the bolsters and other props I used were a bit too old/dusty which gave off a smell. I'm not super OCD but felt a bet allergic to it. Instructor I had wasn't bad but was just alright... I'd recommend for anyone who lives in the area, an older crowd, or if you have injuries and need a gentle practice. I have been coming to this place to be quiet and still for almost a decade. I love their store, the fact everyone who works there is a volunteer. Love the fact is its still one of the most affordable NYC yoga classes that INCLUDES your mat rental.. and that it is quiet welcoming of every faith.. and it is generally a mature following. No mess no fuss... and you will get instruction in every Level 1 class and you will learn to breathe.. do asanas.. and you will learn to relax your eyes.. and find some peace during the hustle and bustle of NYC. You should come here if you are new to yoga. You should not come here if you are looking for your classes to be different each time because they will not be at first level. Solid routine that is followed to a tee. But it is a place I hold close to my heart...it's brought me many peaceful nights. read more

I've been practicing bikram yoga and decided to try a regular yoga class. I called to inquire about which level I should start with and the lady recommended level ll since Bikram is more advanced. I almost fell asleep taking this class. It was a lot of very basic slow and breathing movements. I expected something more challenging since the class description indicated that its for students who "are ready to move at a faster pace. New asanas, including mayurasana (peacock) and shirshasana (headstand), and kriya (purification) techniques will be introduced. This class has less instruction and less relaxation between asanas; asanas are held longer for an experience at a deeper level." The class was all of the opposite of the description. This seems more like an introduction course than level ll. The instructor did not introduce any of the new Asanas moves. I was looking forward to learn those techniques. I'm pretty disappointed because the class was nothing like the description of the course. I will not be returning. I wanted to leave in the middle of the session but stayed to give it a chance. PS. My instructor was a pregnant lady... So I'm not too sure if that was why she taught slower with only basic techniques. In any case, I didn't get what I expected from the description of the class and I am very disappointed. read more

I love Yoga classes that are effective without being strenuous!!! It's hard to explain, but their Yoga is advanced and gentle at the same time. I'm specifically delighted by the Restorative classes though... With all the busy-ness of the city and the constant chatter/crowds, I need to lay down in cozy positions and have someone speak sweetly to me. It's very healing and seems to alter my digestion, my mental state, and my tolerance for pushy people on my commutes. Their restorative classes are 90 minutes long, which is rare. They are also one the few places that offer Yin Yoga. It's my new favorite thing because it really alleviates tension in the fascia, where habitual tension is mostly held. I've had less pain in my shoulders since I started practicing Yin Yoga. read more

This place is a fixture with mature teachers, most of whom have been with insitute for at least a decade. There are classes throughout the day, that you really are able to fit a class into any schedule. Student, senior and package discounts make this place remarkably reasonable compared to almost any other yoga studio. There are loads of classrooms, particularly look for a class in 'Heaven'. They have all the yogi accoutrements, including MATS. That's right, you don't have to bring your own mat. Classes are a generous hour and a half. And they even have a health-food store next door. This is a place for old-school diehard yogini regulars and I'm glad I found it. NOTE: Look out for the octogenarians who can put a former gymnast's (read: me) flexibility to shame. It really is a sight to behold. read more

One of my favorite things about the Integral Yoga Institute is how affordable it is compared to other places in the city! I'm a fan of the 20-class card for $220 (and there's no time limit to use it within, like some places - for the oft lazy among us...) They offer Free Deep Relaxation class, Open Meditation, Diet and Nutritional Consultation, and mats. I understand you can even volunteer in exchange for classes! IYI offers a wide variety of Hatha classes, including Spanish and H.I.V. Hatha. They happen essentially every day at a variety of times, so it's easy to fit into your schedule. Thier special workshops range from Financial Yoga to Yoga for Anxiety to Chair Yoga. They also offer teacher training. The only minor downside I've found, is that the class tends to depend on who's teaching. No major mishaps. But, I've occasionally come across teachers that seem unsure of themselves or run class at a pace that's on the slow side. read more

I feel so lucky to have discovered three affordable options for yoga in Brooklyn and Manhattan during my stay last month. My first stop was Integral Yoga Institute, which I used to walk by constantly when I lived in the East Village and worked in the Meatpacking District, long before yoga entered my life. I went to their Level II/III Community Class on Tuesday night (for just $5!) and was very impressed. The class was a full 90 minutes and covered everything I could ask for. The class commenced with some "Om Shanti..." call and response chanting, and while I'm not much of a chanter, it was beautiful to listen to. The instructor taught a demanding flow that covered everything that makes my happy - especially inversions and balance poses. She also helped all of her students with great assists. That alone earned my praise. read more

Pros: The grooviest of the groovy (if you're into that, which I am). It's got an early-70s feel of communalism and Carol King (she once donated land to the founder, Swami Satchidananda). The teachers take you to your Self through the asanas, mantras, and pranayama alone--no watered down dharma talks. Their egos stay out of the way and often you don't know who your teacher will be, which was disconcerting to me at first but it's great for non-attachment. It's just sad that I didn't have the experience that I sought to look for in a yoga place that offers thorough practice for beginners like me. with one of the classes offered today, I found myself lost and have no clue whatsoever of what to do/expect. the teacher did not provide me with much help and I wish I have a lot to say about the noise level outside of the rooms. read more

What a sad place that never move forward. everything stay soooooo old and unconventional way it is sad to see how it is. All teachings are very un-inspired and un-motivated. I got so much from other yoga place with so much inspiration and motivation that inspire me to move more into my practice I am so glad I realized what happen in this place and found my new found practice with much more to offer to me we all need a place that inspire and improve our practice this is definitely a not a place that can fulfill that need read more

Love. this. place. I have taken yoga classes at several different places, here was definetly my favorite, although since I was in a beginners course I probably didn't challenge myself enough. I am seriously considering signing up for more classes just need to see about work scheduling first. If you have the time and the money, go for it. Also - if you don't like the chant stuff, just chill through it. It is not required that you participate. After 3 weeks here I came closer to touching my toes than EVER before. After 18 years of volunteer work at IYI teaching Yoga classes my wife received a call from IYI this evening informing her that her services were not longer required. After 18 years of volunteer service which clearly represents someone that was devoted to the cause and performed adequately, otherwise she'd not be brought back for 18 consecutive years. She was informed by phone that her services were no loner required. I have to say that as an outside observer as her her husband, driver and supporter of her desire to teach at IYI I am VERY upset at how she has been dismissed of her duties. No thank you recognition after 18 years of service. Anyone entering or presently involved at IYI should clearly weigh what they expect of their volunteer time. In fact I would suggest not to expect anything and they should question how their efforts are being viewed and measured as a contributor to the IYI. community. Very sad, very disappointed and very commercial of IYI. All antithetical of any community experience especially one focused on a yoga discipline a devoted to a serious yoga practice. You're better off looking at alternatives to IYI. Shame on you IYI! read more

Great place to be overall. They have books and a health store next door. They provide some free classes, usually during work hours though. I've tried their yoga 1 and 2. The extended chanting at the beginning and end in Sanskrit is just too much for me. In those 2 instances, the teacher just sat and lectured. They never walked the room to adjust. Such a lovely place. Been going on and off for years, and it's always an oasis. I'm no yogi so I don't know all the terms but this seems to be the mellower hatha style they rock here, so don't expect an insane aerobic workout....the focus here is on de-stressing and balance. I'm not bothered by the om shanti chant-y stuff, I enjoy sitting through it. Personally it was an important spot for me after sept 11th 2001, the staff really rose to address people's anxiety. My wife and I did some Ayurvedic diet class, and we couldn't make head or tail of it.....just way way too deep and jargon-y.....I just remember a bunch of symbols and charts and chakra this and chakra that etc, couldn't figure it out. We just wanted to see what the diet was about. So these folks are serious about the concepts and philosophy behind this stuff, which is awesome, but perhaps a little too technical for the layperson. I don't think this detracts from the spot, I'm simply observing this level of talk wasn't for us. Can't go wrong with the Hatha 1 or 2 class, just great. Nice little organic grocery next door.....the whole scene feels very welcoming and open and, although I'm not 110% into this kind of thing, I really feel I've benefited from coming to the occasional class and catching the peaceful vibe. read more

I've taken yoga at a few places, including the last gym I belonged to. In all honesty, I haven't taken a yoga class in years; but considering how close it was to my house, along with the fact that I wanted to sign up for prenatal yoga classes, it seemed like the obvious choice. I love the fact that Integral Yoga also has a grocery store right next door (perfect for healthy snacks before or after class), as well as an apothecary across the street (with an abundant supply of vitamins and supplements). I love the comprehensive list of books on yoga, meditation and well-being that are available in the reception area, and the way every staff member makes you feel like you're a seasoned member of their community, even when you come in for the very first time. The rooms are conducive to the kind of mental and physical well-being you're trying to achieve: the colors on the walls are very soothing and the rooms are carpeted. I've worked with two prenatal instructors already: Jyoti and Kelly. Both are nurturing and patient, walking each student through the many positions we transition through over the course of an hour and a half class. I love how the language of the class focuses so much on the growth of and connection with your baby. The fifteen minute relaxation period at the end of the class is the perfect time to reflect on the events of the day and release tensions while simultaneously bonding with the baby. I leave class feeling less stress (and more strength) in my muscles and complete ease. Integral Yoga offers a wide array of classes for people of any age, with specialized workshops being offered every month. Their pricing is also very affordable (I was able to get an unlimited monthly for $108, which, when you consider that my class is offered 6 days a week, makes each class about $4.50). I think it's great and look forward to trying more classes. read more

What a great place! I wanted to have a special day with my husband who had never tried yoga. We booked a private lesson, then had some fresh veggie juice at the cafe next store, then 30 minutes of chanting/meditation, and then we each had a massage. He had a fantastic deep tissue massage and I had a Thai yoga massage that was very interesting and relaxing. The price was right and the service was great. The staff called twice to talk about what we wanted in the private sessions and the massages. Everyone was very friendly and the yoga lesson was just the right degree of difficulty. read more
