If I could give this terrible place a negative five I would. You'll notice every time a negative review is written it's followed by a glowing well written review , how odd?! First of all the surgery center reminds me of an illegal abortion clinic in the Philippines, very scary place. Secondly my attempts to get copies of my medical records have been unsuccessful. I have been trying to get copies of them so that I can go to the RUSH Pain Center which was recommended to me as IPM is a literal nightmare. I have never experienced such a disorganized doctors office with no returned phones calls, no follow up on requests for refills etc etc. I went through a terrible withdrawal from going cold turkey on my meds TWICE due to the fact that no one responds to any phone calls. The pharmacy is In California and is mailed to you so the it takes weeks to get the medication. This year I bit the bullet and bought a much more expensive medical insurance plan so that I could go to a legitimate professional pain center such as at RUSH University. I weaned myself off of the medication I was on so as not to experience the horrible horrible withdrawal symptoms I experienced twice while going to IPM. Now I am living in pain each day at a time waiting for them to give my copies of my medical records so that I can go to another doctor. My next steps will be legal action if I do not receive the medical records by the end of this week. Stay away! read more

I visited this office today for a follow up visit. I've had back pain for years. I've tried various medications and was doing fine until a car accident I had a few months ago. My pain was so bad I finally called my insurance company (Cigna) and asked for in network providers in my area. That's how I found Dr. McGowan. Now I would like to note that I NEVER visit a physician, restaurant, or any business other than what's normal for day to day activity (CVS or Target) without checking their Yelp reviews. My insurance gave me 3 providers, none of which had great reviews *rolls eyes at insurance company* I ended up giving this office a shot because they only had 7 reviews. I feel like less than 10 isn't an accurate assessment (good or bad). The other providers I was given had more bad reviews which tells me that that is the culture within their organizations. The reviews from here weren't coming from fellow Yelp Elite. If I see that someone setup a Yelp account just to write 1 good or bad review I pretty much ignore it. Glad I went with my gut. My appointments went great! I made my initial appointment over the phone. When I came in for both my consultation and follow up visit, I was greeted right away. I think the front desk receptionist's name is Veronica. She was nice. I didn't have to wait long at all to see Dr.McGowan so that is a major plus. She was friendly and very knowledgeable. I first visited the office in mid September. Dr. McGowan sent me to get an epidural at the surgical center on Fullerton 2 weeks after my consultation. Then I waited another 2 weeks for my follow up, which was today. I would definitely recommend Dr. McGowan. Avoid this place at all costs. Put aside the fact that Dr. McGowan lacks any sort of compassion and acted like she couldn't care less about my nagging leg pain. And also put aside the fact that she was WRONG and her recommendation was to get not one but TWO epidural steroid injections in my back which proved to be a complete waste of time. I rarely rarely leave any medical provider a bad review as I'm very familiar with medical billing etc.. I know that the question to ALWAYS ask is "Are you an in-network provider" and not "Do you accept my insurance". The lady on the front desk staff told me that they are in network. She seemed really pleasant and competent (amongst the other front desk staff that really didn't care). Also, I saw another reviewer review that she found out later that they were out of network with her insurance after they got the bill. So I was super careful to make sure I ask specifically if they were in network with Cigna LocalPlus PPO. I was told "yes" so I proceeded with the consult with Dr Shanele McGowan. Well, so I opened the mail and see the surprise bill because she is OUT OF NETWORK. I honestly cannot stand when front desk people play with semantics as they are trained to just get everyone in the door. So first big ding! My Neurosurgeon had told me that I needed a facet joint injection. Dr McGowan came in and said that based on her assessment that seemed reasonable and booked a time for it and said that I will be under conscious sedation using propofol for my cervical spine injection. I've had 3 back injections before with just local anaesthesia so I asked why I need to go under general. Dr McGowan said that that's how she likes to do it. I'm ok with that answer to be quite honest as I could've made the decision if I want to get an injection under general anaesthesia or not. The next ding came on the day of when after breakfast, my wife told me that if I'm going under, I shouldn't have eaten anything. I called them to confirm and sure enough I was told that to be true. Front desk again told me that I should've gotten a call giving me pre-op instructions. Again, she seemed confident and seemed to know what she was doing but I cannot get over the fact that I was never told about being out of network. So now they had to reschedule for the next week. Third ding was that once I rescheduled for the following week, I was told that I'll get a call confirming and walking over pre-op. Still no call so I just went ahead and scheduled elsewhere. The other place (northwestern) gave me trigger point injections. That didn't help so I now need to schedule the facet joint finally with them. Finally, I found Dr McGowan to be ok personable. She told me basically to stop eating the jolly ranchers in the jar in the office room..no joke. I mean I honestly don't care about that, but it was just kinda funny I guess. read more

please do yourself a favor and do NOT waste your time going to see Dr. McGowan. She is completely disrespectful of patient's needs, concerns, and worst of all - lacks compassion in every way possible. She talked down about her previous co-worker (Dr. Cooper - who was my doctor and an amazing provider before i was forced to see McGowan) I'm sure in losing Dr. Cooper, IPM will most likely lose most of their patients who are required to see McGowan. I was referred to Dr. McGowan when my sciatica became totally unmanageable. My pain was off the charts and had been for months. I felt hopeless. She effectively cut through the "noise" in my head and laid out the ways in which she could, and could not, treat my pain. Having had a very unpleasant experience with an injection years ago I resisted this option at first. When I finally surrendered I was totally amazed by how different my experience was this time. Now I remember why I didn't originally write a review. I couldn't find the listing. This is actually a review for Dr. Tian Xia, MD, at a different location in Andersonville. I had a bulging disc and was referred to him. He told me about a surgery that sounded great. A disc decompression that used a big needle attached to a dust buster, essentially, but I read up on it and even found a friend that had the procedure and called it a miracle. He was back to normal in 3 days. I said yes and made my appoint meant for the creepy surgery facility where he does these procedures assembly line style on Saturdays. Dr. Xia did a sloppy job with the disc decompression surgery. He didn't even extract enough of the disc to fully fix the condition, and while he was in there he caused major inflammation just as bad. It's hard to tell between actual nerve damage and inflammation for some time, so I was terrified he broke me forever. Rather than my miracle 3 day recovery, I spent a couple months unable to even sit down, go to work, and I was seeing his physical therapy staff for a year. Thing were so confusing and awful and expensive, I finally just took all my outstanding bills to him, laid them on the counter and said, I'm not paying. He cancelled what he could, but not before my huge deductible and none of the thousands to his rehab staff. Not to mention two dark years of anguish, lost work, and the isolation only back pain sufferers know. Two years I'll never get back. I probably should have sued. Why didn't I sue? read more

I take both of my parents here for their chronic pain and conditions. They have seen both Dr. Xiao and Dr. McGowan. Both are wonderful, and I'll split up the reviews. Front desk: LOVE them! The women at the front are friendly, kind, and make my momma laugh and feel at home and comfortable. Mom has anoxic and traumatic brain injuries that effect her short term memory, and I swear their joking and chatting has made it better. Dr. McGowan: she's wonderful. I "enjoy" how the poor reviews of her are based on not being personable enough. She's compassionate, to the point, helps, and gets her job done in a great and efficient manner. If you ask questions she'll answer them. It's ridiculous that a female professional must be a pushover or kiss your butt in order to be considered good in her field. Dr. Xiao: there's a good chance he'll be running behind but that's EVERY pain clinic, and doctor's office. He listens, is knowledgeable, is thorough and will run necessary tests, and is also compassionate. The procedure office: the women who work there are kind and funny, and it's not shoddy. There aren't marble floors and door service, but it's clean, and you're in and out. I love IPM, the doctors, and staff, and they have helped my parents effectively manage their pain. read more

I saw Dr. McGowan for headaches that I struggled with for several years. I had seen other doctors previously, but none were as patient as Dr. McGowan was with me. After one month of seeing Dr. McGowan, the headaches have improved significantly. I cannot recommend her or the office enough!!!! read more

Unprofessional. Liars. Don't trust them. Both Christa Cooper and Dr. Xian shook my hand and confirmed they were In-Network with Cigna. After many months and bills later, I was finally contacted by Migdalia and told that I'd be getting a "major discount" for their error. Christa even offered to write a letter on my behalf to Cigna, requesting my procedure be treated as In-Network. Several months passed, and despite my many phone calls and email attempts to contact Christa and Migdalia, I never heard back from either, and no letter ever came. As bills (for the original full amount) continued to arrive, I was forced to pay them in their entirety. The staff at Integrated Pain Management (2674 N Halsted, Chicago) is flaky, unreliable, and unreachable. It's truly disappointing as the each they initially presented themselves as knowledgeable and friendly at the time of my consultation and procedure. ALSO, it turns out it's against the "anesthesiologist code" to be fully anaesthetised (made unconscious) for a spinal injection. (I'll be investigating/pursuing this further.) I was weary of Dr Tian Xia at 1st, given my bad experiences with past doctors, most notably work comp doc's. But he is attentive, caring, and what I like best is he actually listens to me when I speak!! IPM also offers therapy from a friendly staff, and chiropractic needs. Had a serious car accident two years ago and have been suffering from chronic back pain do to a lumbar disc herniation. Christa is friendly and professional, always listens to your concerns, and thoroughly checks you out before diagnosing. While I usually don't write reviews, I thought it would be a disservice for me not to this time. Once my former doctor sold his practice, Cigna referred me to Dr McGowan since the office is not far from my job, and I'm so happy they did. I must admit that initially I hoped that I could just go in, tell her what my last doctor recommended and have her pick up from there. Instead, she was very thorough in how she planned to attack the pain in my knee and that she'd look forward to seeing me on a regular basis (VERY different from my last doctor). After 6 months, I've come to really enjoy our appointments, as they've become like two friends catching up. (She always asks about my children by name, which makes things all the more personal) Dr. McGowan has a genuine care for not just treating the pain, but has also given me suggestions on how to make it go away completely. I hate that it took me this long to write a review, but again, I've found that I'd be doing others a disservice not to. HIGHLY recommended!!!! read more
