Was a patient for 8 years, suddenly 4 days before a procedure...I've been jumping through hoops to get to for 17yrs..I was dismissed as his patient, after contacting a liason to look into it for me, it was confirmed that the GM outright lied and said I had mistreated the PA..I hadn't even had any interaction with him for 6mo prior to my last appt.. the Dr..Dr Smith, never even contacted me to ask me my side.. he believed his employee that hasn't even been working for him as long as I've been his patient... very saddened to have been mistreated this way..I had to start over again with another Dr  and waited 6 more mo for the procedure to be done... utterly disgraceful how I've been treated.. it was called patient abandonment by other medical professionals and that is exactly how I felt read more

I was a patient of Dr. Kevin Smith. I had an epidural. The aftercare was such a terrible experience as well as dealing with his Physician Assistant Alex and office staff (Leslie; Scheduling Coordinator and Office Manager who is rude and very incompetent. In addition I would be reluctant to recommend this Physician to anyone who cares for their family. I would also recommend reporting any incidents to the California Medical Board( online forms) for : a) office practices b) denial of medical records; egregious behaviors c) delay in treatment etc www.mbc.ca.gov A person does not need to need to pay for unnecessary procedures or coerce to sign forms or statements in order to receive treatment or have the treatment delayed. I would expect many of the things are true in which other individuals have stated. So STAY AWAY! read more

You must jump through incredible hoops just to get an actual appointment date...the office protocols delay service to anyone experiencing debilitating pain. They have lost the "mission" along the way somewhere. The scheduler won't give an appointment until they have reverified the authorization and referral that has already been generated by your referring physician's office. When you finally do get a consult appointment and need to schedule a procedure....don't hold you breath for an appointment. To get a procedure appointment requires yet another delay while they reverify the authorization yet one more time. We can't comment on Dr. Smith himself, as we never got past the new patient coordinator and all the protocols. Not wasting any more of our precious time and energy with this group. read more

Terrible receptionist and strange office. I had a nerve stimulator trial for 7 days and never saw Dr Smith during the trial until last day after trail catching me walking out crying. He took me to room and I told him it didn't work and stuck his head out door and spoke to nurse practitioner who only saw me twice through this ordeal. Dr Smith waved me away to leave and said nothing else. Kudos to Earl who was the rep for the nerve device very kind. I was supposed to use him for pain management and never was updated on when I could get appointment for seeing the doctor. It's sad place to go and glad I found a wonderful pain management that was so welcoming. I never do reviews on yelp but I was never so upset with this office. read more

Dr. Kevin S Smith is a very talented, knowledgeable and advanced in the medical field and he was able to heal me and change my life! I am so thankful that I saw Dr. Kevin Smith about my knee and he fixed it! Because of his advanced medical knowledge and research of stem cell therapy, he healed my knee.that had reinjured. I had been on crutches and wearing knee braces and in constant pain. I previously had a 2-year recovery in 1999 with a bucket tear meniscus. I had lost hope because 3 other doctors recommended a knee replacement surgery. Dr. Kevin S Smith treated me with stem cells. I have had zero pain and I am able to walk and return to work. The procedure took one visit and cost much less than surgery, not to mention the recovery time surgery would have required. My knee tissue healed and is better every day with no pain! Dr Smith did a procedure on my neck today. I have been silently suffering for the past 4 years! He did a contour with steroid shots in my 4th and 5th vertebrate ! He was kind and direct! I am at home 8 hours later and I am pain free for the first time 4 years. He told me the pain could come back and did not give me any false hope!! After 2 months of no calls and no appointment communication, I followed up to find out when my appointment was going to get scheduled. Dr. Smith's staff stated they didn't have my information... I stated they got it two months ago and again yesterday. Instead of listening to me, they talked over me, put me on hold several times for increasing intervals, then refused to acknowledge that they had my information. I drove there to the office to straighten things out and apparently I'd been banned for "raising my voice" to speak to them because they were talking over me when I was trying to explain when my records were actually sent.Honestly was the rudest situation I've encountered in years. My referring Doctor's nurse confirmed that my doctor will no longer refer patients here because this has happened with other people.Unreal... YO KEVIN... FIRE ALL OF YOUR OFFICE STAFF! You're a cool Doc and have helped me the past several years... it's a shame your staff represents you this poorly. Best of luck! read more

Active Duty military member referred to Dr. Smith by TRICARE Health Net based on Naval Medical Center San Diego's inability to get me in for a pain management procedure which I needed in February. Since NMCSD had no availability, TRICARE Health Net obliged, and authorized a referral to be seen in the civilian sector. Timeline of events: 3 March - Referral authorized (after some back and forth with Health Net). Approved to be seen by Dr. Smith 10 March - No call yet to be scheduled after one week of approved referral 10 March - I call Dr. Smith's office to try to be scheduled. Remember, wait-time is what had me referred out in town to begin with. His receptionist informs me they need records from my referring doctor. I call my doctor. As I'm on the phone with my referring doctor to request the required records be sent, Dr. Smith's office leaves me a voicemail stating they had just received all required records a few moments earlier. The next step is for Dr. Smith to review my case for suitability to be treated at his practice, as not all cases can be treated (reasonable). 17 March - STILL no call to be scheduled after having confirmed one week prior that the office received my records. The receptionist informs me at this point that it takes a week, sometimes up to two weeks, for Dr. Smith to review the record for suitability of treatment. She further informs me to call back on 19 March if I did not hear from them. I don't, and give them more time. 25 March - 15 days have elapsed since Dr. Smith's office confirmed they have all required records in my case. STILL no call to be scheduled. I call Dr. Smith's office inquiring, quite upset, about the offices' lack of scheduling me thus far - 15 after I know they have everything they need. The first receptionist essentially tells me I have to continue to wait as "Dr. Smith reviews every-single-patient's case individually". (I would hope that is the case...?). After venting my frustrations with her, she passes me on to her manager - the very one I spoke to on 17 March. The manager proceeds to inform me that my case is still pending review by Dr. Smith. I then ask her if there was a chance that the doctor, at this stage in the waiting game, "could" say he would not be able to treat my case. She confirms that that was in fact a possibility. At this point, I am 6 weeks overdue for a C-Spine/T-Spine procedure to relieve the dreaded pain with which I live on a daily basis. I am not calling with a "tummy ache", or a because "my head hurts and I need an Advil". I am seeking relief - HELP, for god's sake. I live with chronic pain on a daily basis. I surely am not the only one, I know. But 21 days with absolutely no progress from Dr. Smith and his office for treatment of severe pain is completely unacceptable. Dr. Smith is in the wrong field if he and his office think it is reasonable for a pain management patient to sit and wait with absolutely NO idea of when, or even IF, they will be able to be seen for pain relief for 21 days - six weeks past due for their procedure to begin with. Absolutely unacceptable and unreasonable by any standard. Dr. Smith and his practice are either: A) Severely overwhelmed with patients and simply cannot keep up -or- B) Have absolutely zero regard for the health, wellbeing and treatment patients living with chronic pain Either way, I highly recommend you do NOT consider this gentleman if you are seeking pain management treatment. read more

just learned this: Our dear dr smith was sanctioned for Substandard Care, Incompetence or Negligence on 7/25/2013 Action Taken: Reprimand. The office staff is the worst I have ever experienced. By far. Unfortunately I see a lot of doctors, so I know. After seeing the doctor for the first time I waited ten days to call back to see how the paper work was coming to have an implant done. They must have misplaced my paper work and instead of the moral courage to say so, the front office made up some story about how it takes 10 days to get the chart from the doctor. Really??? After a few more phone calls that went the same as they, we parted ways. Also if I had know about the reprimand, I would have never gone in the first place. read more

I am an established patient of Dr. Smith having been to his office over half a dozen times just a few months ago for back pain injections. This week I hurt my hip...maybe pulled something. But I can't walk. So I called his offIce for an appointment and spoke to Diana. I explained to Diana that I had hurt my hip and can't walk. She asked if the doctor had previously seen me for my hip. I said not for my hip and reminded her I was just there a few months ago for several back injections. She actually said "THAT BECAUSE THEY HAD NOT SEEN ME FOR MY HIP BEFORE, " I needed to be seen by my General Practitioner first and have her refer me to them before i could be seen. I reminded her that I was an established patient who had seen the dr a half dozen times AND THAT I CANNOT WALK and that I was in major pain and could not wait to get appt. with my General Practitioner, then wait for a referral to their office to see a doctor who had treated me over 1/2 dozen times! I told her never mind and that she could just view YELP in an hour. 15 minutes later I received a call from their office and I let go to voice mail. It was a Juliana who was calling sounding very nervous and actually said she understood I called and there "was at lot of confusion" and to call her back. Confusion? No confusion. I was told they wouldn't see me. After seeing the doctor many times for back injections just a few months ago I'm turned down for an appointment when I'm hurt and can't walk. SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THIS POLICY. Why establish yourself at a doctor office if you can't call up and get an appointment when you have a problem!! Done with this office. And if you look further, they don't have a lot of good reviews from Yelp. Wish I had seen that before I ever had my first appointment!!! read more

Dr. Smith was incredibly thorough on the initial consultation and explained the pros and cons of my regenerative medicine procedure. The staff met me at the door/parking lot with my wheelchair, got me prepped and back for the procedure. I took 2 medications for relaxation however I really don't think I needed them at all. Dr. Smith's expertise had me at ease the whole time. It has been just short of a week since the procedure and I can say that I am already on the way to resolution of my Knee pains with meniscus tear. It's unfortunate for Dr.Smith to have such a terrible staff working for him because i'm sure he could have a lot more patients if the staff wasn't so incompetent. They delay everything just for a patient to get an appointment and they try to make things up as to how everyone else dropped the ball but them. It's very sad for staff to act this way especially being that they are in the pain management field where patients need things to be speedy due to pain, these patients also need great caring customer service and this office lacks that. I was a patient at Dr Kevin Smith (pain management) office. Probably saw him 3 times in la Mesa ca office and 2 in La Jolla office. Dr Smith shares his office in La Mesa with an outstanding dr who my husband and other family members had surgeries. Dr Smith is a great doctor very nice attentive caring doctor who sits down and talk to his patience. You rarely see that now a days. Unfortunately he has employees who work for him who could care less about his patience's needs or well being. I truly wish he could clean house and get New employees who really care about his practice and about his patience's needs. Dr Smith would definitely have more patiences if that happens. I would definitely go back to see him again if he gets new employees. read more

I have never experienced such an unprofessional office staff to say the least, we have tried to refer patients to Dr. Smith and have had nothing but issues with our patients not being treated leading us to re-direct them to other pain specialists, it is unfortunate for Dr. Smith who may not be aware of who is running his office, instead of finding a solution or trying to work together, they instead place the blame unto others and lack communication, they instead yell and place blame and do not assist the referred patient. As of today we will stop trying to work with this office and instead focus on a more competent staff, one who is cooperative, professional, efficient, and whom are empathetic, I hope they work on a solution in managing a better medical office where the patient is not in the middle and assist them instead and hopefully they can focus on working with other medical staff outside of their office and not call being argumentative and unprofessional, I can't enforce that enough. read more

First time visit to Dr. Kevin Smith, and I was impressed with his quiet soft spoken manner and good listening skills. Using a model of the spine in his office, he took the time to show me where my pain was originating from and worked out a plan for helping me with relieving this pain. Terrible, terrible experience(s). The first thing you'll notice is the strong diesel smell that always fills the office. Then you'll be treated to very rude receptionist's that will slam the glass window shut at any given time, to avoid hearing us minions in the lobby. The wait times are unacceptable. I waited 47 minutes and 52 in the exam room before the pain specialist (Scam Artist) came in. I was able to here through the very thin, un-private walls that the Dr. was seeing someone that walked in 35 minutes after me. My app. was at three 3:00, and theirs was at 4:00 (I heard her tell the receptionist). The rooms show visible dust on surfaces, especially the exam table drawers. (Filthy). Dr. Smith himself is a smug, arrogant jerk. Don't forget to glance at his gaudy gold Rolex that he flashes. He's very condescending, explaining things in a soft chuckle. This guy just talks, with no end result to treatment. He tried explaining a procedure that I have had numerous times. When I explained that I was aware of all this, he just keeps talking. I guess you have to to keep up the scam rouse...... If you want a good Dr. that listens and is compassionate, DON'T GO HERE. The nurse assist. has a bad, rude attitude.
