I was referred to Dr. Erik Ostler (an associate of Dr. Martinez) for a Glaucoma exam. Turns out I…read morehave it due to cataracts and as a result have nerve damage in one eye. Dr. Ostler explained how cataracts can increase pressure on your eye and suggested cataract surgery which made me FREAK OUT, but after his calm explanation of the procedure and answers to all my questions I booked my surgery. I now call it more of a procedure. You're still awake, but really, really relaxed and pain free. 10-15 minutes then Bam, you're in recovery sipping juice, coke, 7-up whatever - awake but don't drive unless you want to get pulled over by your local enforcement officer. Rest the rest of the day and don't FREAK OUT if your eye is cloudy or blurry. It clears. Just follow Dr. Ostler's instructions. I promise you it's OK. My surgery (procedure) was yesterday and I'm great! YOU WILL BE TOO!

I called my eye doctor who I found out was out on vacation. I was told he'd return from his vacation in 11 days. Funny, as I hung up, I realized they didn't even offer me a referral to another eye doctor. I called right back, I got a different person to speak with and she graciously offered me a referral to see Erik M. Ostler, M.D. I called his office and asked if I could make an appointment for tomorrow or any day this week. They asked me if I could come in today at 3:30pm. I looked at the clock in my Jeep and it read 2:30pm. As I tried to compose myself from the sudden shock of being told I could come right in, I said yes, I'll be right there, thank you so much! After a short wait in the waiting room my wife and I were taken back to an exam room. Lauren was so welcoming. She's not your typical nurse's assistant. She was extraordinarily kind and genuinely compassionate. With the way the World spins today, Lauren was a breathe of fresh air. The Golden Rule applies here and she's positively the perfect spokesperson to sell us all on it. She has a remarkable and cheerful attitude! Dr. Erik came in with an attitude that followed Lauren's. Extremely well spoken, kind and articulate. He listened to me and after a thorough examination, a treatment plan was agreed upon. A follow up will be with him tomorrow. I think I've just found my new eye doctor. Thank you Dr. Erik and Lauren. You're both miles above the bar that is set in most doctors offices here in Nampa. Well done! I can't thank you enough for squeezing me in same day, same hour. I was blown away!

After a considerable waiting period, I was able to get an appointment with Dr. Martinez. The…read moredoctor's consultation was professional, informative, and pleasant. Four days before the first of two scheduled surgeries, I spoke with one of his staff. During this discussion, I raised the issue that this surgery has, statistically speaking, a 98% success rate. What had been, up to that point, a pleasant interaction became uncomfortable when I asked a question about this. Based on the first response I received, I believed that the person didn't understand the question, as she gave a totally irrelevant answer. After reformulating the question two more times, where it couldn't have possibly been misunderstood, and receiving answers that only deflected the question, I became frustrated. She suggested that I ask the office manager. Two days later, I spoke with the office manager. I told her that her coworker had refused to answer a question I had. I explained that I had repeated the question numerous times, so she either didn't want to answer it, or lacked the cognitive ability to understand it. From the immediate confrontational reaction of this person--who didn't even ask what my question was--it was clear that her coworker had already informed her of her version of the story. To avoid more frustration, I simply hung up. Here is the question the staff refused to answer: "If I am one of the statistical 2% who are unhappy with the result of this surgery, what recourse do I have?" If the office disputes this, they can post the unedited audio of the two conversations I had with the staff. Since I couldn't get an answer about the doctor's policy regarding negative surgical outcomes, I called the office the following day, a Friday late afternoon. I was told immediately, after identifying myself, that both my appointments for surgery had already been canceled, without anyone informing me of this decision. The first one was scheduled for the following Tuesday. The question that they refused to answer was, "If I'm one of the 2% with problems after the surgery, what is my recourse?"

During the…read moreconsultation visit prior to surgery, we were told that my husband's distant vision would be stronger after the procedure. He was warned that he would likely need readers for close up, and we understood that. Following the procedure, he now cannot see at a distance at all without glasses, but his near vision is good. He was told that the measurements of his eye must have been off because of previous lasik surgery. While they wouldn't admit an error, they alluded to the fact that the wrong lens was also put in his eye. At a follow-up consultation visit, my husband was told that they could swap out the lens to put the right prescription in for just the cost of the anesthesia. While he wasn't excited about having another procedure done, he was optimistic about the prospect of getting the results we had been told he would get. The following day, we got a call from the surgical coordinator and found out that this was not the case. It would cost an additional $4500 to replace the lens. It seems to me that this should be something they should want to make right with patients, but they are not interested in doing that. We had to make multiple attempts to contact someone who could give us a straight answer. We were told that someone would reach out to us, but it took repeated attempts to get a return call. While the office staff have been very friendly, the doctors did not make any attempt to communicate with us or help to find a solution that would not be very costly. After 4 days when Dr. Bewley did call me back, he was very rude. Such a disappointment.
