I have created this review in honor of our Brussels Griffons, Gizmo and Brodie. I will start with…read moreGizmo's Story. I got Gizmo during the summer of 2003. He quickly became the light of my life. He was a wonderful dog with a very special personality. I purchased him from a breeder in Ft. Worth by the name of Belinda Atherton of Bel Kay Kennels. When I got there, she wasn't even very sure of who I was or which dog I was coming to get - which I found odd. Also, she had his mother in a tiny little pin and I noticed that she seemed very shaken up. I wasn't crazy about what I saw, but I quickly forgot once I saw my Gizmo. At approximately 2 and a half years of age, Gizmo suffered a terrible freak injury called a Fibrocartilagenous Embolism. Basically, he suffered an embolism in his spinal cord. A portion of his spinal cord actually died. He was hospitalized for 4 days over at Gulf Coast. He recovered pretty well from this, but still had many problems associated with this injury. His personality changed after this. He became more grumpy due to associated pain from the injury. He was still a very good and sweet dog, but sometimes the pain got the best of him. This is something that more commonly happens in large breed dogs - not toy breeds like Gizmo. About another year or so later, I noticed that when Gizmo peed, it just drip dropped out, so I took him to the vet. They discovered that he had a very large bladder stone. On the day of his surgery to have it removed, they discovered that not only did he have the bladder stone, but also stones that had become encrusted in his urethra. We had to take another trip to Gulf Coast to have a very specialized surgery. In this surgery, they had to completely reroute his entire urinary tract and create a new opening for him to pee out of because his urethra had become severely damaged. At the age of 5, I discovered that Gizmo had a small pea sized lump on his skin, right in the center of his back. We took him to the vet and it was treated topically at first. When it wouldn't go away, they biopsied it and discovered that it was skin cancer. We had it removed and felt that his prognosis was good. It was only stage one. A few months later, we discovered a large lump in his armpit under his skin. This turned out to be more cancer and it was stage 3. We took him back to Gulf Coast and he received radiation and chemo for 2-3 weeks and ultimately we had to put him down because the cancer had spread all over his entire body. During his treatments, I began to think...why does my dog keep getting so sick? I decided to contact the breeder to notify her of all of his ailments. I sent her an email describing everything that had happened to him and asked if she had heard of anything like this with any other people who purchased dogs from her. She and I had emailed many times before because I sent her pictures and stories and poems I had written about Gizmo. This time, she never responded. Finally, I emailed her from my husband's email and acted as though I was interested in purchasing a puppy from her and she responded within hours. Upon confrontation, she had a huge hissy fit and denied any wrongdoing on her part. Then she even had the nerve to chastise me for tricking her. We were devastated over the loss of Gizmo. Brodie, our other Brussels Griffon that I had purchased from the same breeder, became very depressed and lonely so we decided to get another dog. After all that we had been through with Gizmo, and upon realizing how insensitive Belinda Atherton of Bel Kay Kennels was, we knew we needed to do our homework in finding another breeder. I made many phone calls and told our story many times to many breeders. They all knew of the horrible kennel in Ft. Worth, Texas - Bel Kay. They told me she had a horrible reputation and that she ran a puppy mill. We ultimately found Gunther at a wonderful kennel in Tennessee. Let me now tell you about Brodie. He has had a relatively healthy life, aside from luxating patellas (knee problems that is a common ailment with inbred dogs) and gingivitis. Brodie just passed away from meningitis. It was very difficult to come up with this diagnosis. He had been to the vet 4 times in less than a week before they finally said to take him to Gulf Coast to see a specialist. During his treatment, his brain became extremely swollen and it herniated, causing his death. He was in a great deal of pain. So between the 2 dogs I got from Bel Kay kennels, both of them had some extremely serious health problems - ones that aren't even common (aside from cancer, but that is genetic). Each dog died at only 5 years of age. We spent TENS OF THOUSANDS of dollars helping these dogs. Brodie's most recent bills exceed $4000 alone. Do your homework when looking for a breeder, and most certainly do not go to Bel Kay.

Over $400 vet bill to get all of our animals checked out and medicine. Then doctor visits for our kids to get the required medicine and treatment. This person has made our family think twice about all breeders now. My wife texted her about this and she did not seem to care at all. So I will make sure that I give her every negative review that I can.
