I did research before selecting International Scuba for my OWC class. Some of the other shops in the area just didn't feel right or were rude with egos. I also from some cheaper programs, but I am so happy I did not pick based on just cost. The personal attention I got in class from my awesome Dive Master Alan was so worth it and made the entire program amazing. The rest of the shop are very knowledgeable including the owners who are there, other dive masters and candidates, etc. Eric is very knowledgeable and helped with many different questions I had before signing up. I recommend buying your starter gear from them which will be fins, boots, snorkel and mask. I got a dive bag to which I am happy I did. If you buy your starter gear there your rental gear for class is free. The gear (bcd, tank, regulator) are not included in the class price. They have wetsuits you can rent or buy as well but in class you don't need the wetsuit in the pool...which is HEATED, if your personal choice. I picked the Mon-Wed-Mon and then Sat Sun lake dive schedule. I am very happy I did this as a rookie. There is so much information to take in this schedule allowed me to take in the info in smaller bits, think about it between classes, and also felt like I had time to work on something a little more and not feel rushed if needed. The online e-learning portion was a lot of learning and detail and some questions felt I had right and realized the wording was kinda close so pay close attention to each question in the quizzes. They will also review the missed questions the class had on day one to ensure everyone is clear. Then the pool work very comfortable. Alan is a great instructor and great guy. One thing if you are new to diving is this is serious. Doesn't mean we can't have some fun and you will for sure but you have to take a serious attitude, no ego, be humble, and listen. Even if you have some knowledge and a little prior experience remain open and humble. We all learn everyday from others with more experience diving if we just listen. The dive masters are not trying to be mean but they have to make sure they get your attention and you are focused as the skills you learn are designed to keep you and your dive buddy safe so you can enjoy this amazing sport of diving for the rest of your life. The final portion at their Private Pavilion space they have at Scuba Ranch. We did 4 dives over two days. We were able to get 3 on sat and the final on Sunday. You gear up at the pavilion area then walk down a path to the dock to entire the lake. You will get to practice all the entry styles, see the pvc platforms and dive lines they have setup to help with your training. Lake diving is a little different than ocean as the water is dark and lower visibility. There were multiple classes that day, multiple dive masters and assistant dive masters and dive master candidates onsite helping. It's a very casual atmosphere setup and EVERYONE was amazing, friendly, and approachable. The IS Tribe truly is a family and you could see and feel it. There is also a Facebook group everyone shares info, trip pictures and videos, and the group plans dive trips together. Very supportive group. I completed my open water training here and was very disappointed with the service. There were many costs that we had to pay for that was not mentioned in the initial payment (roughly $200 more after the initial $550). When I completed the open water dive the other employees were rude and condescending as well. When we completed lake weekend they changed the schedule mid weekend making our Sunday dive way longer. Very frustrating our schedule changed mid weekend. Rachel and Andres are two of the best people and trainers I could have asked for! Do not do business with this company. They have recently purchased Frisco Scuba. We had scheduled a trip to Cuba with a 60 day cancellation as stated in the contract. They will not honor the trip cancellation agreement. We are now going to have to make other arrangements to get our money back. Many people are pulling out of the trip, and the entire trip is disorganized with two different boats and two different itineraries. One boat is going around Cuba while the other is stationary - very odd for a live aboard trip for a week! We have repeatedly asked for our money back and now the company has stopped returning several requests. Scuba is an amazing sport, it's sad when representatives like this ruin the sport that is amazing. Absolutely steer clear of this company. They don't care about their clients, they don't care about their legal requirements, and customer service is absolutely not in their vocabulary. read more

I highly recommend Internal Scuba. I recently took the Open Water Diving Course. The course has an online section, a confined water section (pool) and finishes with an open water section (lake). The whole process was well done, and I learned the skills needed to start diving. I was highly impressed by my instructor, Bill Strum, as he went the extra mile to help me work through skill areas that I was slow to pick up in the lake section of the course. After a horrific attempt at earning my Open Water certification in California I was certain that I would never get in the water again. After some soul searching I decided to contact some dive shops here in Dallas. After telling Rich my story, he and International SCUBA staff made me feel comfortable and made me believe I could do it. I had a wonderful instructor and the support of the entire shop. If I could leave zero stars I would. BUYER BEWARE!!! My file was sitting by the shop phone for over a month "unfinished" after I had been assured THREE TIMES everything was ready to be sent off. HOW IN THE WORLD DID NOBODY IN THE SHOP THINK TO CALL ME? How did I become aware of this unfinished paperwork? I had to call another scuba shop to find out I couldn't register for courses due to international scuba not calling me to let me know I need to come up a FOURTH TIME TWO MONTHS AFTER MY CERTIFICATION DIVES HAD BEEN COMPLETED. I paid over $800 for a basic open water certification and basic scuba gear. From start to finish it took over FIVE MONTHS to finally receive my certification. INSTRUCTOR WAS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE AND SHOP OWNER IS AWARE OF HOW HORRIBLE SHE IS! I was signed up for the wrong class, under the wrong name, given the wrong packet for my class, told the wrong information EVERY time I came in. Charged $80 for a DVD that didn't even work. Guys at the shop have no idea how to handle paperwork. I had to forfeit not one but two scuba trips because of all of these issues totaling over $300, so now these classes have cost me a loss of those funds as well. There's more terrible things I could say about this shop but let's just leave it at this. read more

I just completed my Open Water certification with International Scuba and I had a great experience. Rich was very helpful in helping me select my gear, Patti and I corresponded via email and she gave me all of the necessary details prior to the first class. I did the academic portion with Elon and he was very good at explaining things and answering any questions I had. I did my confined pool dives with Dennis and he gave great feedback and made sure I felt comfortable with the skills. Micah was helpful with my gear rental and had everything ready for me. So, this weekend I had my dives and the entire crew at the lake were just so much fun. I've done several of my certifications with this shop over the last year. I don't know where to begin to explain my satisfaction with the quality of instruction. Rather it be a classroom course going over equipment or a course at the lake for a new specialty. Every course was well planned, very informative, and a lot of fun. I took the open water certification course almost one year ago with Joe Stone as my instructor. I found this scuba shop on the PADI website and it was the most convenient location for me after works hours. Highlights: Joe is a great instructor and very knowledgeable. The shop decided to add the PPB certification to my open water dive weekend, in which it was no pressure to sign up. As a young professional, I was already spending outside my budget to buy the basic gear, the classes, and my scuba trip. I ended up signing up for the additional certification and am glad I did. During my vacation dives, the dive master had a preconceived thought that I was a new diver and would not be able to do the more advanced dives. However, he was impressed with my first dive, and I do owe this to my instructor and lessons from International Scuba. Apparently, there are other dive shops out there who send out new divers who have no clue what they are doing. After international scuba, you can leave and confidently be able to be an independent diver. My class size was 3 including me; this includes the open water dives. This is great and from my understanding they keep it this way. The equipment is practically new and well kept. Yes, worn before if you are renting, but you do not have to worry about worn out equipment. The store has an indoor partial salt pool, in which you can do your class dives right there. It's convenient and clean. The open water dives are in a lake about an hour East from Dallas. Be aware to bring cash for your open dives to pay for park fees and air refills; but the site is clean and the best you are going to get in the Dallas area. My only complaint, is that my buddy during the open water dives was a terrible teenage kid who did not want to dive, hindering my experience. For example, he did not want to do the pre-dive check or take the instructions seriously, just like any other male teenager. The instructors did a good job trying to distract him, but obviously they do not have control over this. The other thing, is expect to pay a fortune. Diving is an expensive sport, however I did not expect to spend $400 on just my basic gear. But I bring it along with me to all my dives and it fits comfortably. Would I dive with international again? Yes, because of their well knowledgeable instructors and small class size. read more

Biggest rip off joint I've ever experienced in the scuba business. Took a regulator in for annual service and they charged $120 just for labor and $75 additional for parts. Other scuba shops charge $60 for labor. I will NEVER give this place one more penny of my business. read more

I booked an EFR course with them. Due to travel I missed the date. I called on four separate occasions to work out a reschedule and spoke with Micah. Each time I was promised a return call and never received one. Additionally, I emailed to enquire about rescheduling and never had my email responded too. This all took place over a two week period. It's a shame that the Customer service for this transaction was so poor. Prior to this I had a great experience with them. I was able to receive a refund but no explanation as to why I didn't get a call back. I guess I wasn't important enough to bother with. Maybe there is another dive center who doesn't mind working with Vets. read more

First of all, I totally understand the reason why the other reviews are mostly 5 starts which is they are the group who learned the open-water class. I write this review from a different perspective as an advanced class student. Because I was treated totally differently by the scuba diving coaches. When I took the class I was super excited since I would have a trip in Iceland at that time and I want to get my Advance diving certification to be able to dive at a world-class spot in Iceland. However, the class ruined my trip and my trips even after. Here is what happened: 1. When I took the advanced class, I was with a group of other open-water student and another advanced student. It's a cold day. I arrived at the site at 10am as International scuba tole me and I waited there almost 4 hours to start my first dive because I have to wait until everyone open-water student finish his/her class. So I literally wasted half of my day there with doing nothing! 2. I took the first class as natural navigation. The water was cold in the winter and the visibility in the lake is not good. I tried my best to do the practice and focused on remembering the natural reference and feature. At a point, I forgot to check my buddy and the coach just let me dive without giving me any notice. After I dived for a bit, I checked the coach and I totally COULD NOT SEE HIM!!! I was so scaring to think any bad thing happened to him and I tried to look for him... Finally, another guy saw me and came to signal to me to dive to the surface. And I found the coach was on the surface. I totally don't understand how could a couch be so IRRESPONSIBLE!!! As a student especially dive in the cold water the first time, I could make some mistakes but the coach just let me did the mistake without doing anything!!! 3. I dived with my brand-new Gopro in a class but I found I lost it when I came to the surface. The dive coach said he would go back to help me to look for it but in the end HE DID NOT DO ANYTHING! I am sad to lost my new $450 GoPro 4, but I feel much worse for the attitude of the dive coaches! They just did whatever they liked to do without any help. 4. Since they only taught me after the open water class. I just finished 2 dives out of 5 dives of my advanced class. And in the next months, they only went to the lakes which are too shallow to do the mandatory deep dive. As the result, I never can finish my advanced class which ruined my trip in other places such as the Great Blue Hole in Belize and the wreck at Key West... I never thought a good and interesting scuba diving class could become such a big and long pain!!! I cannot be more regretted to start my advanced class at International Scuba and learn from the coach group! Good luck to all the open-water class students! After a cruise in 2006, I decided I wanted to learn scuba diving. I asked friends around Dallas and they suggested International Scuba. I walked in and immediately felt welcome. Rich, International's long time manager, helped me pick out the right equipment that I needed to get started. I signed up for his class which was full of instructional teaching, hands-on gear training, and diving in the pool. Rich kept it entertaining and fun. I received my basic, then later went back to the shop for my advanced, deep, and night dive certifications. I have visited this shop several times and did my open water training though them as well as the enriched air diver course. The shop instructors (of which there are a many) are very helpful and knowledgeable about their craft. However, the shop itself is very poorly run. Communication from the staff to customers regarding classes and their times and requirements and how to prepare is very poor. The whole experience of becoming certified through this shop was a confusing and frustrating experience; again not because of the quality of instruction, but rather the disorganization and logistical confusion fostered from the ill-prepared shop staff. I went thru the IDC last October, and the experience was not a good one. However, that experience completely changed after Rich took over along with Course Director, Kevin Murphy, leading the charge. I felt very comfortable just before the Instructor Exam last weekend due to Kevin's guidance, wisdom, & support. I was able to comfortably pass the IE. I highly recommend these guys for all things scuba. They provide a relaxed & enjoyable environment along with always promptly following up. Alright, I've wanted to go SCUBA diving for a long time... 13 years at least. I even bought my equipment 13 years ago and was waiting to find a dive buddy to go to classes. I finally had to get married to get a dive buddy and the wife bought a groupon for open water dive classes! So we went to classes with International Scuba. Our instructor, Dwayne Butts was a good teacher. I feel like he not only cared for us because he was an instructor and he's obligated for our safety but wanted us to enjoy the time we had as well as enjoy the sport. For those of us who picked up skills faster, he didn't belabor the skill and for those who needed more help, he spent more time with them. As long as you didn't go off on your own or do something dangerous, you could do what you wanted while you were waiting for others to master their skills. We had one husband learning to dive because his wife wanted to learn. This guy didn't know how to swim, much less dive. He had a lot of problems with the skills but Dwayne stuck with him and gave him attention when he needed it to help him get the skill mastered. Open water dives at the Clear Springs Scuba Park were well planned and everything went smoothly. When we were doing the pool work, we had a class of 8 people and because the pool was so small (at the time, we went to the garland location, it's now closed) it was very cramped for that many people. Once we had our open water dives, we had 6 and that was much more manageable, especially with additional helpers there to speed things along. Make sure you watch the videos! Make sure you understand your dive tables. Be aware of your surroundings. Make sure you check your gear and have your buddy double check your gear. I had a lot of fun and I had very high expectations and they were all met. Hopefully my review will allay any fears you have in learning how to dive! read more
