After moving to Portland from the east coast, my husband and I were looking for a gym with the similar energy, high quality instruction, passion from the instructors, and safety that we received at our previous cross-fit gym. After much finding in the Portland metro area, we were SO HAPPY to stumble upon Intrepid. We go 2-3x a week for our schedules. The owners Ruth and Sean put in a tremendous amount of effort ensuring that every experience you have seems like you're a new client, when you show up each and every time, whether or not you've been going there for years or days. I appreciate the fact that they don't assume you just know everything and they really provide COACHING rather than passive guidance. They know each and every persons strength and weaknesses, and make everyone feel comfortable. I am also always astonished by the variety in the workouts, and all the coaches really provide great instruction, whether it's Ruth and Sean, the owners, or the other two coaches, everyone's amazing. You should come to Intrepid if you're looking for community as well. Everyone let's you be who you are but there's always opportunities to have pot lucks, celebrate people, and have fun during class or after class. I think I understand the CrossFit business pretty well - as a previous owner (with my wife) of a CrossFit Gym and as a current member of a CF gym. To me, there are "focus areas" for any gym business. Possible Priorities: 1. Member Safety 2. Quality Coaching 3. Business Process management 3a. Member confidentiality 3b. Staff management 4. Investment in new coaching skills and equipment 5. Quality Review and Continuous Improvement My "positive" experience at Intrepid relates to my multiple drop-in visits while in town on business. On each of my visits, I was received professionally and politely each time. My biggest concern, and gripe relates to an early November 2018 incident, where one of their staff sent out a "survey" to current and past members. Intrepid PDX openly published my email address to almost 700 people - instead of hiding it in a BCC to protect my privacy. I have followed up multiple times to the originator of the survey without response - or an apology. I've also requested my name be removed from Intrepid's database, and my request was also ignored. When I'm visiting Portland on business, I have several choices for CrossFit - and I was hoping Intrepid would be my gym-away-from-home. But I won't be back. While mistakes happen, I've reached out three times to the staff member and ownership to share my concerns and didn't receive a response. "Just remove my name and personal data from your database - if you cannot manage my personal information with discretion." That's all I can ask at this point - because your staff member already broadcast my email address to 700+ people. Oh, and she also broadcast the email addresses of every current and past customer I might add (Yikes!). Generally, from my experience, the customer list of any business is a sacred asset to be protected. I wonder, if I were to post the survey originator's email address here ... perhaps then she'll grasp the importance of privacy. Or at least be courteous enough to admit the mistake and remove my contact information from Intrepid's database. read more

I was out for a walk the other day when I came across this gym just a couple of blocks down from where I am staying. At this point, I've only been in town for a little over a week, visiting a friend, so I was still getting acquainted with the neighborhood. It was about 2:30pm on weekday and lucky for me there was a really friendly gentlemen there who was willing to tell me a little bit about the gym, the classes, the community, and what to expect on my first day if I chose to sign up. I forget his name at the moment, but I'm pretty sure that he was just one of the clients and not one of the owners. It was apparent though, talking to him, that he was invested in this gym and really wanted to make a good impression. For me, one of the most important qualities when looking for a gym, especially a group fitness-centric one, is the community and the culture that it promotes. So far so good. A couple more days pass and I finally come in for my free trial class. The gym is very well equipped with all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a functional fitness facility (pullup rigs everywhere, rowers, air bikes,barbells, bumpers, lifting platforms, etc) with an emphasis on weightlifting and strongman equipment. Everything is clean and well kept. The space itself feels very spacious and is very well ventilated with two large bay doors that open to the outside. There are also plenty of cleaning supplies for personal sanitation around the gym and everyone is very good about keeping their equipment and space clean. I got to meet one of the owners and head coaches, Ruth, and it turns out that she is just as welcoming and friendly as I was expecting. She ran a straightforward class with just the right amount of instruction, encouragement, and attention one could expect during their first class. She asked me about my athletic and lifting experience, as well as my injury history - all the questions any good coach would and should ask someone. You'd be surprised how many coaches don't ask these questions, so this alone already made me feel very comfortable. The workout itself was difficult, but fun, Like many people during this time, I've let myself go a bit. The coaching staff obviously understand this and have created a generalized program that makes sense and gets people moving again. This is also something that I appreciate a lot in good gyms, the understanding of where their clientele are coming from and what they need most. Funny thing, even though I hadn't made the connection earlier from the gym's name, I came to suspect that this gym was possibly a transplant of a very well-known gym that I knew about when I was living and working in California way back in 2009. It turns out that it is indeed the same gym and that the owners are the same as well. Everything from the initial email inquiry, check in process, class instruction, warmup, movement explanations, cleaning protocols, and everything in between was done smoothly and efficiently. The owners, Ruth and Sean, have been doing this for a long time now and obviously know what their doing. At all times during my visit, I felt like I was in good hands. I've got nothing but good things to say about my visit here to Intrepid Athletics and am looking to working out with their crew again. Thanks again for the hospitality! read more

I have been an Intrepid PDX member for over 3 years now and happy to call this gym home. Recently, I moved (what I thought was) too far away to keep coming to Intrepid and joined another gym closer to my house. Within a month, I was missing Ruth, Sean, Matt and the whole vibe of the gym so much that I HAD to come back. Best decision ever! The instruction, inclusiveness and care these coaches share with everyone is better than you'd ever see at the typical x-fit gym. If you're just down the street on MLK, or waaaaay across town, it is WORTH it to come these coaches in action. There is Strongperson, Olympic weightlifting, and traditional x-fit programmed workouts. There is something for any and every one, no matter what skill level. The coaches genuinely care about YOU. No pressure, no hype, no BS...just a good, hard fun workout that gets results. The WODs at Intrepid PDX are the best stress relief, especially during what seems to be the craziest year to date. I have been a member and part of the Intrepid family for well over a year now. I have nothing but positive things to say about this place. Sean and Ruth really care about fitness, but also care about you as a human. I am treated like, well, part of a family! They make a point to ask me how I am and genuinely care about the answer. I have been to plenty of gyms and boxes where there can be a huge intimidation factor. Even if you aren't a stranger to a crossfit type gym, going somewhere new can be scary. At Intrepid there is a rule that if current members do not introduce themselves before the warm-up is over, there is a burpee penalty for the member. So, if you are new, you will get a rush of handshakes and names. What better ice breaker than the entire gym saying hi to you!? I would encourage anyone interesting in Intrepid to come in. I am not an all star athlete. I'm actually pretty awkward when it comes to most fitness regimes. After much deliberation between joining Intrepid and hiring a personal trainer, Intrepid was the most economical choice. Plus your first class is free! Flash forward to 5 months later, I have gained so much knowledge about my form and various techniques/practices. Sean and Ruth are very patient and easily adapt workouts to my level. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff in a giant space. All of the fellow members made me feel welcome from day one. Most of them come up and introduce themselves if they don't already know you. In fact they encourage the practice of meeting your workout partners at the beginning of each class. Also the equipment is practically brand new. They take care of it here. What got me to come in is the free sessions they over to newbies. It let's you try before you buy. By far the best Crossfit gym in Portland! Or maybe anywhere (and I've been to a lot of them) What makes this place so good? Let me tell you. 1. Small classes with focused and dedicated instructors. Ruth and Sean really pay attention to you, and they are invested in making sure you push yourself but that you do so with good form. Their coaching results in sustained improvement without injury. 2. Interesting workouts with several types of classes. You can take straight up, good old fashioned Crossfit classes, and in addition they offer weightlifting, gymnastics, strongman, etc. These focused classes let you develop your skills in specific areas. 3. They offer kids classes 4. There is a really nice vibe in there. A great community of people attend their classes and everyone supports each other. 5. Great people go there, it seems like a good community, but I just had a bad experience. I've been doing CrossFit for a number of years. I bought a 10 pack. Unfortunately I re-injured myself one punch into the use of the service. The 10 pack has a 3 month limit. You have to use it all within three months. They had zero flexibility on this. They would not hold it or extend the timeframe. I get it, everything is "scaleable" right, well sorry sometimes you just need some time off and don't want to sub body-weight squats for toes-to-bar (etc. etc. etc.). I think some flexibility would have gone a long ways in this situation. Also, and mind you I've only been there twice so far, the warm ups are generic and uninspiring. The preparation for the specific intense movements of the workout didn't seem to be reflected in the movement preparation. This is just something that is on the radar of every athlete who has injuries. read more

I can't say enough positive things about Intrepid. I came to the gym as a complete novice, and I was beyond intimidated when it came to entering a real life CrossFit gym. Turns out, I had nothing to be afraid of. The coaches, Ruth and Sean, and every member of the Intrepid community welcomed me with open arms. In just a few short months, I have made so many new friends and feel 100% a part of the Intrepid community/family. The small class size makes me feel like I'm receiving one on one personal training. Ruth and Sean are both SO knowledgeable and devoted to correct form to prevent injury. Ruth went so far as to provide me with a personal mobilizing plan to fix my poor posture. I am so grateful I found this gym. I worked out with them relatively briefly - from Sep 2016 to Jun 2017 - but it advanced my skills and knowledge and curiosity so much. Both Ruth and Sean are scientific with their approach, and so motivating. It's possible to see the workouts online (awesomely targeted to individual goals/experience), but a huge part of the magic is the warmup! They read and learn about mobility, muscle activation, and modifications. You'll get an amazing cardio/mobility/strength workout - but you'll also get exposed to Olympic lifting, strongman, and gymnastics!! I joined Intrepid about six months ago and it was honestly one of the best decisions I have made. I dropped in to Intrepid PDX for a Saturday morning CrossFit workout while visiting Portland over Thanksgiving weekend; I've got nothing but great things to say about this gym! The coaching was spot on, the energy from Ruth and Sean (the owners) was awesome and the other folks there for the workout were friendly and welcoming. Two of the folks were relatively new to CrossFit and Ruth really took the time to make sure they understood the lifts and movements and performed them safely and properly. This gym is really clean with super nice equipment, a couple showers and even a kids room for the wee ones. I travel a lot and have visited many CrossFit boxes over the years; Intrepid PDX is easily up there at the top. I perused the chalkboard to checkout WODs from earlier in the week and was genuinely impressed with the programming. Plus they also offer traditional Olympic Weightlifting and Strongman classes! Sean must've seen me eyeballing the atlas stones during the CrossFit class because he offered to help me work with them once we finished the WOD. Love it! I used to be pretty anti-CrossFit before I drank the Kool-Aid and I still hear about how "dumb" CrossFit is from some of my friends and co-wokers; I will totally admit that there are some sketchy boxes out there. I joined this Crossfit gym nearly a year ago after driving by for several months and being very intimidated. Once I attended my first class I was hooked. I love that classes are full of individuals who are all pursuing their own fitness goals. Sean and Ruth are great coaches and have worked hard with me to correct bad posture and improper lifting techniques. My teenage daughter as well as my younger son both attend Crossfit classes relative to their age and ability. I am happy with the level of coaching and attention they both receive. I travel a lot and usually visit a different gym when I do. I can say that Intrepid has the best coaching, newest equipment and strongest community support. I've been an avid CrossFitter for the last ten years and have travelled all over the world dropping into different gyms. I was an affiliate owner for 7 years and ran myself through every certification I could get my hands on. I've been exposed to some of the best coaches in our industry. I can say with full confidence that Ruth was the most knowledgeable coach I have ever worked with. She has the most developed coaches eye I've ever seen. She can pinpoint a breakdown on your movement the moment it happens, identify what's causing it, and provide the correction to improve it. I've had a lingering back injury for the last year that I've seen multiple specialists for and after assessing my movement she ran me through a protocol that gave me relief for the first time since it's started. In addition she took my movements back to basics and showed me how to fix some bad habits I've developed over the years. Usually I feel pretty beat down after training but with coaching my through proper movement and weight loads I felt like I got a great workout and my body felt energized after. I felt like I was starting all over again and this time I was doing everything right! I am an active individual:climb, surf, weight train, run calisthenics; a master of none, having always considered about joining cross fit, I finally took the initiative. Here's the deets about the gym 1. Low volume from coach to student. Which means you get more face time, technique training from others 2. Focuses on form than looks: they will decrease your weights to make sure you develop good form rather than "looking" good in the cross fit world like making sure you PR and all that. 3. Laid back, but still competitive. No one here is trying to out compete you, you can go to another gym for that one. But it still has that competitive edge bc there are cross fit athletes there who embody what cross fit is like the owners and several students there: yeah ripped as mother... 4. Friendliness, everybody is easy going to say what's up too, talk about why you want to throw up after class, what kind of dog you got, what kind of music you listen to on walks on the beach etc. 5. No one gets left behind. Everyone here cheers for each other, the last person finishing the WOD gets the loudest and biggest praise. 6. The owners are invested in you, that makes a difference when the customer is invested in the owner. 7. The music is awesome, NO WHERE have I listened to Celine Dion, Barry White and other slow bump n grind music doing burpees, thrusters, rowing etc than here. I think they play slow music to get the angst out, then throw a power song in there. Then you feel like you can crush the WOD. 8. Nothing more to add, if you see me there. Ruth was my cross training coach for almost 4 years. Sean was my weightlifting coach for 2 years. I really like this place. I have never done sports or exercised at anything with consistency. But that all changed when I started at Intrepid a year ago. Here are my reasons why I go to Intrepid Athletics: 1. The coaches - They taught me the right moves to climb a rope, lift weights, do a pull-up, etc. Also, the coaches are open, honest and friendly. 2. The workouts - Never boring and always just the right amount of challenge. 3. The gym - It's clean, easy to get to, and has lots of good equipment. 4. There aren't many places (or gyms for that matter) that truly embrace the meaning of the word "community". Yet, after my introductory class, I knew Intrepid was different. The moment I walked into the building, I felt a sense of camaraderie and friendship. There is no room for negativity here; everyone is quick to introduce themselves and also help you push through that last rep. Sean and Ruth do a tremendous job of individualizing each workout to fit your fitness level and are constantly critiquing your technique.
