When I say that, I say it lightly. I know it is just over twenty years old, but for the type of rollercoaster it is, it is kind of one of the firsts. I believe it is said that this is the first hyper rollercoaster built by the firm that built it. So, yeah, maybe old school isn't a bad way to describe it. The line moves swiftly, obviously not as fast as the coaster itself. The line winds a bit more than I expected. But once you get to the platform you get to feel the rush of the air. Once you are on the ride it feel like it is over in a flash. After the initial climb and pre-drop you are dropped down towards the water and tossed and jerked for the rest of the ride. Honestly, this ride is a bit badass. I mean, on the inaugural run Fabio did get hit in the face with a goose. How much more badass can you get?

Which is kind of like a historical landmark just for coasters. I know that makes it a draw, but for some reason I don't see it for this ride. You can tell that it is a ride that has been here for a while. It feels dated and I do not think that it was a smooth ride in the least. I came off of here feeling like I had gotten out of bed the wrong way in the morning. Yes, I am currently at that age. What is impressive is the two loops that appear to be interlocked. It's always fun to be zooming upside down. To have two of those, it made the ride not so bad, but not so great either. I do appreciate how they actually included water into the theme. It would have been a little dull if they didn't have it going at least near the water. For a good portion you are going up and down over the water. I mean, this is the Loch Ness Monster...at least it didn't ask me for $3.50...

The gentlemen running it were incredibly nice and gave us an unforgettable tour of this classic piece of Americana. My parents and I had planned to make the Hampton Carousel a focal point of our recent visit to the area since my mother is a member of the National Carousel Association, and we were so glad we did. This was a gorgeous Sunday and despite that the area was relatively empty. We had very few other folks come by the carousel while we were there and so the two gentlemen running it gave us the grand tour, including of the central support pillar, the electronics adapted to assist the century-old organ, and the other historical artifacts lining the walls. They did so out of the kindness of their hearts and a genuine affection for the carousel and its history, which you just don't see in terms of commitment at most venues anymore. The price for all of this? $1 a ride. What a deal! The carousel ride itself was enjoyable, and it's very cool that they have so many tracks of the hit songs from each year the carousel has been open. You never know what you'll hear next! The pavilion containing the carousel is beautiful and sturdy, which is particularly important when it comes to protecting the carousel for the next century or so. This was a fun experience, and you can't beat the $1 ride price. Genuinely great fun for everyone, make sure you stop by if you're in the area! Overall: 5.0 stars ----- Pros: - Amazing staff who go out of their way to make your experience a special one. - $1 carousel rides? Hampton Carousel (HC) is ready for Halloween! I had read about HC from another Yelper and…read morebookmarked it for a day we found ourselves in Hampton and whaddya know, we found ourselves in Hampton last weekend, a lot sooner than I thought so this bookmark came in handy. Our kids love carousels so I knew this would be the perfect little pit stop before we made our way back to the other side. HC is located right next to the Virginia Air and Space Science Center. - Parking - There was not a dedicated parking lot for the HC that we could see, so luckily we found street parking nearby and it was free. - TLC - Two staff members were running the place. One by the admissions desk and one operating the carousel. The woman by the admissions started her spiel like a seasoned actress rehearsing her lines for the next blockbuster movie. She did not skip a beat. She told us that the HC turns 101 years old this year! Wow, pretty neat that they have kept this piece of history well maintained. - Pricing and Ride - The cost is one whole dollar. Cash only. And you get your dollar's worth too. The ride seemed quite long, like a good 5 minutes, but maybe that's just me. I was riding the sleigh (that doesn't even move!) and I was feeling a little queasy by the end LOL. Our kids on the other hand, couldn't get enough. HC was decorated for Halloween. The women encouraged the kids to make their way around the carousel to the different spooky and ghoulish figures to nab some candy before it spooked them. The kids had fun doing that! We spent a full day at Water Country USA and still didn't hit everything. We arrived close to after…read moreopening and grabbed chairs near the wave pool. We also grabbed a single large locker. Life jackets are located throughout the park. There are several family water slides: Big Daddy Falls, Aquazoid Amped, and Malibu Pipeline were all rides we as a family with 36" and 48" tall children could experience together. My oldest and I liked the cutback water coaster a lot! Rock 'n Roll island is home to the lazy river, a large standard pool and an obstacle course. There is also a kiddie slide in this area along with 3 body slides for 48"+. My youngest enjoyed the cow-a-bunga play area and the couple of slides there. High tide harbor was also a hit: a multi level play structure with multiple kiddie slides. Hubba hubba highway was also a crowd-pleaser, think non-lazy river. We spent a lot of time in the wave pool too. No tubes but grab a life jacket and let the waves take over. We also had lunch and my youngest ate the whole cheeseburger she ordered and gave it two thumbs up. The dirt cups were also a favorite that the kids enjoyed. Definitely a fun waterpark, recommend a weekday visit if possible.

Today, me and my partner were there and we were leaving because we had ridden everything and on our…read moreway out we needed WiFi to call our Uber, well, one of the security guards (the lady with the black hair at the metal detector) yelled at us because she thought we were going back into the park (we weren't) we were simply trying to get better signal connection. Then she told us "not to go past the sign" that was in between the empty kettle corn bar and the exit, so we didn't. We inched closer to the sign to get better connection but we couldn't get any. (Mind you we DID NOT cross the sign line) then the male security guard with a GREEN HEADBAND, yells at us, "You have been warned, if you go past the sign you will be trespassing and you will be arrested" when we had two seconds earlier stated the fact that we had just been trying to get WiFi. It's really disappointing to see this as a customer and someone who has worked at bush gardens before. After this btw, I was going to come back into the park as the lady had suggested to get the WiFi and when I did, they had purposely moved the metal detector line and I heard the lady say to the guy, "well if they don't wanna come through now, they can just cry about it" as well as I had to stand near the now obsolete metal detector (after they moved it) and I luckily got the WiFi signal. They purposely moved the no bag line to the bag line just because they didn't want me to go through and when I needed the connection and was trying to get the uber to get both of us home, they got on the radio and called the park sheriff as if I was doing something shady. I was wondering why the line was moving so fast, and once you get on the coaster you then understand. It is a launch coaster that pushes you out at high speed. But not before winding up. You'll go one way, then the other, and on the way back down you will be launched off onto the rest of the ride. You go fast, you invert, you twist and then you return. It is a simple coaster, with high thrill. Honestly you could ride this coaster all day with little to no wait. That is how fast the line goes. The only thing I didn't like, I felt like it was hidden. Or at least to me it was. It was hidden in plain sight to me. I had literally walked right by it on my way to what I thought was the next closest coaster.

There looks to be some sort of 'ship' for their imagination as well as several slides and merry go rounds and everything to keep the little ones busy. Going around this park, is a walking trail. It's not too long, its not too short. It's just right. You can leisurely stroll around the entire park, taking a break to watch the kiddies or...and this is the best part, watch the pooches. Among it's perfection, this park has three, VERY large dog parks. Two for the biggies (they need the room) and one GINORMOUS park for the Lil Napoleons (ever meet a small dog that didn't have a Napoleon complex?) This dog park is so big that after throwing the ball for 30 minutes, my very energetic poodle came up to me panting heavily & I swear I could hear "Uncle" as he dropped the ball & walked away. The grounds inside the dog parks are kept beautifully. There is a volunteer who faithfully cleans out the water bowls, picks up anything that parents left behind, supplies balls to all of the parks & for a bonus will even snuggle any pet needing a confidence boost. I am very hesitant in writing this review because if word spreads too far & fast, then everyone will want to come here & there will be a line. There are very friendly owners that come to this park, all different breeds. One day it will be all poodles, doodles, chichipoos, doxies...you just never know who you will meet!

My hub rode the 20 miles of mountain bike trails while I spent time walking the paths that wind through historical sites and open fields. While here, I stumbled upon the Williamsburg Botanical Garden. It features 800 species of native vegetation and entrance is free. Saw a wedding being set up; what a great site to have such a ceremony. The best surprise of all is the presence of one of the first Free Black Settlements in the US. There are 3 cabins, all furnished with items of the period (1803-1850), situated in a graceful clearing. The structures are easy to see inside and out, a trip back in time, for sure. A fellow Yelper writes that Freedom Park is one of the best places to visit if on a tight budget in the Williamsburg region. I heartily agree. There are no fees for anything, unlike other parks in the tri-city area (meaning Williamsburg/Jamestown/Yorktown). I found myself returning here for several days during the week that I was a tourist recently because this place is so enjoyable and tranquil.
