Was very conflicted as to whether I should give this place two or three stars. IMO, this is a 2.5 star place, but since I can only go with whole numbers, I opted to round down. Came here on a Saturday with a couple other buddies. Our intentions were to have a chill night and people watch. For those two things, this place does do a good job. There is pool, albeit one table, a shuffle board, and quite an eclectic mix of people. You will see more than a few people from at least 5 decades. It is also highly probable that you will see people your parent's age grinding on each other, but hey, they're having fun, so no judgment here. I get that this place is a dive that probably has a devoted following, and there is a lot of nostalgia, but the inside is in desperate need of renovation. Very dated indeed. Prices are fair. Not a cheap bar by any means, but not expensive either. No issue here. Service: Here is the reason I opted to round down. Normally, I don't penalize an entire establishment over one employee's poor service, but it just struck me as too typical for this place. I went up to the bar to order a drink and it took me well over 20 minutes to finally get my drinks. That is a long time to be politely waiting. This however is not indicative of the bartenders being slow. For the most part, my bartender was fairly quick at getting drinks out. However, there is no system or recognition on who has been waiting the longest. One guy walked up beside me, placed an order, then 10 minutes went by, he came back up again, and got his second order before I got my first. Just unacceptable for someone to get two orders in before a person who has been waiting patiently gets their first. Design: The bar reminds me of a shotgun house. It's long and narrow and makes it very difficult to get to the bar to get a drink. Since there is limited seating room, this is a bar where people mostly sit at and stay rather than come and go to order drinks. This makes it very difficult for someone to get to the front of the bar to place an order. I could be dragged back to give this place another shot, but wouldn't go out of my way. read more

there was an old old man playing a game of pool with me and he picked up the cue ball based on a rulehe made up on the fly. clearly a regular because I questioned the call and within 2 min he had called the bartender to kick me out despite the fact that I had not raised my voice but only voiced the questioning of his conduct. The staff escorted me out based on the false testimony of a very drunk, old and kind of sad man. I was not overly inebriated though had had a few cocktails. Needpess to say, I won't be back because the conduct of this old man was far worse than anything I had done. its a bar, I get it... but they were overly quick to boot me based on absolutely nothing other than a civil disagreement. what I feel bad for is the alcoholic old man that they were clearly enabling. read more

I went in here yesterday for a glass of wine to wait out traffic after work. I have been here before but it has been a while. I got served from the bartender quickly and I walked outside to check out the patio area. (That I had not done in the past) It was a hot day but they had fans out there and I found a patio table and it was comfortable enough for me to enjoy my glass of wine while checking my emails. During my time there I made a couple of instant friends which turned out to be nice. They also had some tv's on out on the patio. The bathroom was clean too and over all the place was clean. I did not have a bite to eat, I did notice some people were eating popcorn at the bar and I am not sure if they offer that for free or if it costs. I left out of the after my wine. I noticed it had got busier and I also noticed some people shooting pool and I thought to myself. "I will def have to come back to beat someone and bringing my pool stick too" :D haha The only thing that I did not like was I got there and I parked my car in a place which I believe said "one hour limit" and went inside. I walked right past the valet guy. Just after I ordered my wine that valet and another valet come in and tell me that they are using that spot for the valet so I was like "ok, no problem can I give you a few dollars and leave it there" but he looked at me for a minute. In my mind I am thinking that should be plenty because it did say "complimentary valet parking" but guess it was not enough. He told me he did not mind parking my car in the parking lot for me and bringing me my keys which was nice and all but in that case I will just do it myself so I did. I had to leave my glass of wine at the bar, the one that I really wanted after a stressful day. I just did not get it why $5 or $6 was not enough if it is complimentary to begin with and why didn't the other guy tell me anything before I walked into the bar. Had a lot of fun here. Nothing fancy event though they advertise that they are the oldest bar in Dallas, they still have a pretty contemporary "neighborhood bar" kind of vibe. Charging though and the patrons were really friendly. I dropped in on Karaoke night and there were some SERIOUS voices in the house. It was a lot of fun and the drinks were reasonable priced. Honestly, the place was great as I've been going here for quite a few years. THEN tonight, a bouncer kicked another girl out when we were first getting there. He then proceeded to keep looking for her purse for the next 2 hours after at our table where apparently she was sitting. At first he started asking at our table for a black purse, and for the next couple hours asking random questions about this random lady and this black purse. We knew nothing about this previous altercation. Very interruptive time In our evening and conversation with new friends. Then the good part, the first time two hours later after ONE vodka sprite we decide to go to the restroom. We were then "asked to leave" very rudely after waiting for the bathroom, AFTER that one vodka sprite and dancing to a joke I made about the Usher song being played to my friend. Which they accused her of being drunk and apparently pulling a camera of her "falling". Aka dancing to the terrible Usher. Like shit, I can't help your bad playlist and her mocking it with terrible dance moves. So furthermore to wrap this up, ensure you aren't funny, drink anything, or want to dance and have a good time. If you aren't in that demographic you'll probably be able to stay and have a great time. read more

Came here after work because my regular Tavern was out of power due to the storm ... This might be my new place to go after work. Amazing drink prices, good atmosphere and setting. Really chill and and friendly music with decent music in the background. Has an outside patio so I can smoke my cigar. Only 3 minutes further from my normal spot. I sill come back and bring some friends or coworkers. 5 out of 5. Only downside, but not high enough to deduct a star, is that they have no kitchen and serve no food. The only thing that earns a 2 instead of a 1 is the awesome weekly karaoke on Tuesday nights. Back when I started going several years ago, they also had good specials (kamikaze shots or cheap margaritas), although their prices on everything else were very high; made the mistake on St Patrick's Day one year of ordering Bailey's, which was supposedly on special but still cost nearly as much for a shot as it would have cost for an entire bottle retail. The bar on Tuesday nights used to be tended most weeks by Laci, a very competent bartender as well as friendly. Over the years, sometimes they cut back on karaoke, which was a disappointment, but generally the service was fine, it was a fun place to be, and you can have a couple of drinks while singing with friends without breaking the bank. The last year or so, everything has changed but the karaoke. They have various bartenders on Tuesday nights, but each does a poor job of even simple drinks such as an Irish car bomb and other orders I didn't know anyone could mess up. Fireball anywhere around the area that I've sung karaoke is frequently on special for anywhere from $5 down to a bargain-basement $3 -- last time I ordered it, they wanted an astounding $9. When I commented on how high that was compared to other places, along with the wells being suddenly $5.75, the bartender huffed that that was normal around there, to which she added, "If you don't like it, you don't have to ever come back." (Every owner's favorite line for staff to use when someone raises a complaint.) Having already experienced them screwing up simple orders as well as being rude, I took her at her word and didn't come back for months. Dropped in a few weeks ago, but as friends picked up the drinks from the bar, didn't have to deal with the rudeness. Tonight I thought I'd stop in for the first time in a while, and when I saw there was a different bartender instead of the women who'd been so rude and incompetent, I figured I would give it a try. I double checked the price on the specials ($4 wells), ordered, and closed my tab... only to see one drink was $4 and the other - a drink that's the same everywhere else I've ever been - was $5.75. I questioned it with the other bartender on duty, who quibbled over the definition of "well," at which point I was so exasperated I said never mind. That's when the second bartender went with what appears to be the Inwood motto and said, "Well, there's the door." Who knows what their beer prices are - If you like those and don't need mixed drinks, then by all means go sitting there on a Tuesday night, interacting with the bartenders as little as you possibly can. Otherwise, trust me, there are a lot better places to go - and some of them hire that same great karaoke company. read more

Inwood Tavern caters to university park's oldest and youngest. The bar, which I think attempts to fit the 'we are a dive bar so we don't care, but we do care, because Parkies frequent here' bill. There is not much to the long, narrow bar other than the pretty awesome fact they serve their cocktails in Solo cups. Thus, encouraging dude-bra-frat boys to remain in the college mind-set. The bar boasts a shuffle board, live music stage, and a pool table -allowing for some fun interaction or a nice change from just sitting at one of their dirty tables watching the crazy, eclectic clientele. Overall, I enjoy Inwood Tavern. It's a bar with beer so it's good in my book! read more

For sure, this is a locals bar. That's not a bad thing, noting however that I am not one of them. First visit, glad we went, would probably go back IF in the area, but wouldn't make a special trip. Nothing wrong here, just nothing that WOWED me or made an impression. The day itself made an impression; lovely weather and time with great friends. We walked through the dark recesses of the bar and headed for the patio. No fancy decor to be found, just a cool, laid back place to hang out, play pool, test your talent on video games, etc. Patio was functional, old wrought iron furniture, & a couple of umbrellas. This area could use a real redo, some dressing up, and updating. There was a fairly large TV showing the TCU game. Many folks outdoors with us hooping and hollering which created a festive atmosphere. There was no service in the patio area; BFF had to go to the bar to get our drinks. Although BFF didn't appear to mind being "our server" (and he did a mighty fine job), this resulted in a deduction of an extra star. Drinks: Miller Lite bottles, house Merlot. Can't ruin that. However, I ordered a TS Marg, and it was most definitely sub-par, I am the Queen of TS Margaritas, know the best places in town for this delicious libation; this one was lacking the appropriate amount of Tequila, plus whatever mix they use did not please my taste buds. Pushed the Marg aside and went back to the wine. The afternoon itself was perfection; relaxing time outside, lots of conversation, no hassle atmosphere. Rate this part a "5" star, but had not much to do with the bar. In fairness, I can see how "regulars" would enjoy this spot. I have mine too, "where everybody knows your name". What a pleasant surprise! I didn't expect much from this misplaced bar off Lovers and Inwood but wow was I surprised! Friendly service, regulars line the bar and the drinks are extremely reasonably priced. Be sure to come early and grab a table while you wait for the crew that I'm sure has been coming in a few times a week for 20 years. You can even grab a bag of popcorn and watch their shenanigans go down. There is also a dog that comes in and out from the patio - what a neighborhood-y addition! The only reason I'm not giving my new favorite bar 5 stars is because parking totally suck! there are like 2 spots in front and of course, valet which is actually free but sort of a pain if you just want to hop in your car and head out! read more

Neat place that could easily have been picked up from Deep Ellum and dropped into Highland Park by a tornado. Couple of nice rooms, one pool table that's usually occupied, and a nice large patio out back with a separate bar there. Staff has been friendly and cool. The crowd is the difference from Deep Ellum--haha! Lots of what appeared to be HP Divorcees hanging out, so I bet some action could happen with a minimum of hassle, if you know what I mean... One of my favorite spots in Dallas. I was introduced to the Tavern by a lawyer friend of mine, which now comes as absolutely no surprise. Famous for their "Root Beer" shots. I've brought other people to the Tavern and they all think it's great. It's just like Moe's Tavern from the Simpson's except with no creepy gigantic jar of pickled eggs... at least not that I've ever seen. Parking can be tricky so park across the street in the shopping center and walk over, or park in the bank lots after 6:30pm. The bar doesn't serve food but the bartenders will order pizza from a local restaurant and it will be delivered to the bar for you. A great late night option. Or, there's sushi right next door. Since Dallas went non-smoking, I find it easier to stay at the Tavern longer; however, I noticed it really cleared out the bar for a while. It's a bar where everyone knows everyone else. I found this place looking for a simple old school pub type place near where I live and this came up. I'm new to Dallas and the Highland Park area, so I don't really know many people except for co workers. Been here twice, first time was good, watch a game and talked to the people around me... it was nice and it "worked", good game, good beer. Only negative was a bar tender (older female with a hard attitude) who was flat out not friendly or interested in even quick conversations BS while working the crowd. I felt like she's a little burned out. Cost her a star. Could have been 5 stars. Went again this past Saturday night ( uh, that would be last night, lol) and it was awesome! Its a new bar. Way more user-friendly and mainstream. It seems cleaner and less shady than before. Its lost a bit of charm [charm = 75 year old dudes who belly up to the bar and drink all day], but its gained a great back patio/ beer garden and some much needed physical improvements. This was not my best experience here and I don't think it was due to the bar or staff but the other patrons. It was St. Patty's and not terribly crowded, perhaps they were excessively consuming but then again who doesn't. The vibe was young college students that have no regard for anyone around them. There is 1 ladies restroom and the line was 7 deep, again the ladies didn't care anyone else was waiting and took all the time in the world in there. We only stayed for a few drinks and left. They've really updated this place's interior, and I'm not sure that's necessarily a good thing. There's something endearing about a dive bar with a dingy interior and 20 year old carpet. There's a lot more seating thanks to the fact that they took out the disused shuffleboard table and replaced it with real tables. But I miss that shuffleboard table and its warped playing surface. Seriously I won plenty of free drinks on that table so I had a weird affinity for it. Still, hard not to like the extra seating. Bartenders are still friendly, pouring stiff drinks and charging reasonable prices, but it's an entirely new crew because of new ownership. I used to come here a lot back in 2008/2009 when I first moved to Dallas and lived off Lovers and Inwood. It was seriously a lot more chill back then - a serious dive bar w/strong drinks poured by a guy who looked like Cheech Marin and a nook to watch the NBA games (which was a big reason I came since I didn't have cable then). Maybe I blended in better then, too. Who knows?! Overall, I miss that vibe and chillness. :-( I went back a couple years later after I'd moved from that neighborhood when I was volunteering with Paws In The City (PITC). Peeps were coming around to visit all of our dogs who were up for adoption. This brought big smiles to my face because I'm a pitbull advocate and PITC usually has a good amount of pitbulls/pit mixes up for adoption. They are sweet beyond pretentious boundaries. Back to the tavern. They have an outdoor and indoor bar. The indoor bar is better (but slow). Indoors, they have a pool table and golden tee type of arcade games (which I enjoy). Late night weekends, you can stand by and watch yuppies (literally) dweeb-dancing on the piano and acting like fools who just don't give a f*ck while you laugh and suck down a texas brew like, Revolver Blood and Honey. Overall, I miss the ski-ball that used to be upfront, the guy I over-tipped who looked like Cheech, and being able to chill in the back room while watching my NBA games (as I sucked down by Makers and Diet). read more

Okay, okay, it's about time I've written a review for Inwood Tavern. This is one of my go-to spots when I want a good, cheap drink, and Inwood Tavern does them perfectly. I've never had a better well rum and Coke than here! Plus, for just a little extra, the bartenders will serve them in red solo cups, which we all know from college (and that one song) are the perfect vessels for alcohol. Inwood Tavern is great for dates or big groups. The bathrooms are cozy and always clean, and there's free popcorn for when you get the drunchies (which is about halfway through a red solo cup for me). The only downside is that sometimes it can take a while to get your drinks because the bar itself gets crowded with dudes watching the game. Unfortunately, I've moved away from Dallas, but whenever I return and crave a good rum and Coke, I definitely venture back to Inwood Tavern. read more

I don't go to bars often, but when I do, that bar is likely to be the Inwood Tavern. Seriously, the only time my wife and I go out to drink, is if we are entertaining family or friends. We stumbled upon the Inwood Tavern because it's close to where we live and discovered the ultimate neighborhood bar. So many Dallas establishments are about being seen and heard, at the Inwood Tavern you can just enjoy your drinks and friends. I was really impressed with this bar when I went for the first time. Tucked in a little strip of more upscale venues, this is more like a hole in the wall. Big bar area in the middle with seating on either side. Never felt over crowded. There was also a back outdoor patio area that looked nice. They had some great live music when I was there including a guy on a guitar playing 90s rock classics. Much better than the typical uptown bar scene. What a refreshing place! Lots of updates inside and out but hasn't lost the dive bar feel we love. Inwood Tavern has great bartenders, music, drinks, beer selection, and overall atmosphere. I discovered this bar on yelp no less and I've gotta say - awesome! Whilst out with my brothers looking for trouble on Thanksgiving night, we stumbled into this spot, looking for some cold drinks and a place to hang out. And boy, that's what we found! There were merry people a-plenty, drinking, laughing, and playing games on the arcade machines. We watched the game, and drank cold cold mixed drinks that were nice & strong. I loved it. Now, let me start be saying I'm not one to hang out in local bars alot, (Hmm, thou doth protest too much...), but this place is so cool. It got a facelift recently. After all, it is in Dallas, doesn't everbody/thing get a face lift? The staff are all fresh new faces since I was there last and I couldn't be happier, because the former group were a bunch of curmudgeons who acted like you were bothering them for a drink. Still has that "been here for awhile" feel, but cleaner. I love that the smokers have a nice respit outside for their nicotine fix so they don't come back in all grumpy with a chip on thier shoulder like at some other joints. Just think "Cheers" in Dallas without the basement entrance. Come to think about it, I think there was a mailman in there with a mug of beer. Could of just been the lighting. read more

This little place is right across the street from my store. So why have I never been here? In 10 years? I'm not sure what that says about me. I met a friend there a couple of nights ago for what was supposed to be "a quick beer." It's a cool place-plenty of bar seating, and also tables in the front--a game room and a great little patio. My friend recommended a beer called, I believe, Firehouse #1. The bartender was really nice and offered me a taste of the beer before I ordered-very much appreciated, and since it was tasty stuff, I was all set. We sat both at the bar and out on the patio, since it was one of those bizarre January nights where the temperature was 60-something degrees. It seems like a very neighborhood-y spot. I loved how relaxed it felt--so relaxed that our meet up for that 'quick beer' turned into a couple of hours that absolutely flew by. That's the mark of a place I'll keep going back to. read more
