Tall bartender with a beard refused me service after looking at my driver license claiming it was fake, despite it being a real issued ID from the state of Texas. After arguing back and forth with him, I offered to call the cops to make them scan it to prove that it was real, he shoved me out of the bar. Nothing captures the joy of the holiday season quite like a full house filled with family, a Cajun turkey sliced to perfection, a bowl of congealed mystery fruit salad and a healthy dose of bickering. If this were a romantic comedy, our main character would probably require a momentary escape to that overly nostalgic, neighborhood dive and Time Out Tavern would be it. With my 2 favorite ladies in tow, we kicked up the dust en route to the ideal holiday watering hole. From the exterior, TOT looks like nothing more than a washed up dive potentially (and adoringly) filled with one-too-many-drink regulars and their surly female counterparts. To our surprise, Time Out was oozing with charm. Vintage sports memorabilia collaged the walls, fancy bourbons (Basil Hayden, Woodford Reserve, et al) joined other less prestigious drinkables and a few shot machines doled out chilled swigs. An array of tables creates a communal and fun-filled experience--pool, shuffleboard, and picnic--and an outdoor patio (with a flat-screen) offers smokers a haven. The only reason I couldn't give this a full 5 stars is due to the recent or current college princes and princesses that poured in after 10pm. The 30+ scene rocked it before their arrival and the music/vibe altogether shifted once they took over. read more

I've been coming here for awhile now and I'm finally writing my review... I've meet some great people at the TOT during the last 7 years and I have great stories to pass along because of the TOT. I've made some great friends along the way. No matter who is working behind the bar, the service is always great and people are always smiling. My favorite bartenders are Mary and Angel... The TOT offers great drinks at a reasonable price. I've never walked out of here thinking the drinks were not poured correctly or over priced. This is a great place to people watch and play shuffle board. I highly recommend the Time Out Tavern. read more

Time out ... INDEED If you ever find yourself weary for a break from your spinning life, do the hand T signal, break, and come here immediately and without hesitation. The TOT offers something for everyone ...from the "Ranger Red" dollar jello shots to the to the $295 Don Perrion. Sipping pretty in the squizzly silver high back chairs, soak in the sights and sounds of the TOT... from the bright cheery christmas lights, to the neatly decorated bar, to the tasty cold beverages and sounds of either a sporting event or golden oldies rocking from the jutebox. Pretty soon, you'll be Pavlov trained to spin your neck everytime you hear the bell and see who's comes be-bopping in for a time out. To my left came a cheery old timer coming from a 70 year wedding anniversary who was immediatly was served a coors without asking. It was clearly not his first time out rodeo. The man to my right was having a good night out on the town ... time outting from his wife. He just needed to be out alone, he said, and watch the Rangers. After noting how everyone was enjoying themselves, from the bartenders to the people playing shuffle board, I was asked to play some tag team pool with fun randos. Note to self: If a pretty girl with a raspy voice doning a NY Yankees hat on the night the Rangers are playing in the World Series asks you to play pool, she is going to whip your a$$$ and embarass you. Let her do it, it's fun! Situated by the ringy door, I played pool and greeted every happy time outer rolling by. I started having a REALLY good time and just when I dIdn't think my night could get any more random, a nice man comes ringing in with a pan of foiled good eats he was selling. You know when you eye contact someone that you can just tell knows how to BBQ, yeah that was him. I am absolutely baffled by this place. Every so often someone says, "Hey, let's go to the TOT, see if there's any girls there." Everytime this happens, I go. I've seen girls there sitting at bench tables with other guys or the bar with other guys or without guys signing out there tab, but I've never really met any girls there. That's fine because the place does have something to offer. I go out by myself a lot and sometimes, well in my past, I was known to get belligerent. Other times I'm not at all, yet when I go in there people I have never seen before seem to know me and they hate me. t isn't just a random few either, it's a consensus. I've gone to the bathroom there and not just had my seat taken, but my whole seat removed. I've caught people keying my car (well, honestly it was this girl's car, whom I'm not so fond of, but the principal of it, you know). I once knowingly left my cigarettes at the bar and walked off and when I came back to the same cats who were standing there, all of them said they hadn't seen them, when I watched one guy take them. Even the bartender denied it. In short, and not to sound the least bit vainglorious, because remember, I'm largely a loser who hangs by himself, this bar and it's patrons hate me more than any place I've ever been, and I roam around. It's such a remarkable feeling that I try to go there whenever I can. One time I was sitting at the bar and turned to my left and this older woman was so close to me I could have licked that thing hanging down at the back of her throat just by extending my tongue. I asked her to move because I was claustrophobic. After I said that 11 guys, in succession walked up and reached over me, getting as close to me as possible to get matches out of the thing in front of me. They were all together and I saw they had lighters.It was truly wonderful.I'm not claustrophobic; I just really didn't want someone's face attached to mine This was not a "cougar" as a douche might say, she was a luckdragon like Falkor, never-ending story. That's right, I pulled it out, the story really is never over. Which makes the sequal hard to explain... So, if the bar is full, there are bench style tables, which are usually taken by couples or groups of guys and girls who usually contain at least one person you know who gives "hi, how are you"'s but obviously doesn't want you to sit down and ruin whatever facade they've built up for themselves. So then there are some table's by the video games, that's right, basket shooting, maybe bowling, can't recall- but those are usually taken by couples in an argument and the ones by the door may as well be on a stage if you're hanging by yourself and since they immediately face the pool table, solo jack is obliged to give up his seat to the group, which I always do at tables, and sometimes at the bar. Oh, and there's a shuffleboard table, and just the kind of guys who came to play surrounding it. So, then I'm left standing up, no one really to talk to, just standing, wondering why that group over there keeps looking at me and laughing and why this cat just said my name and called me this or that- and they seem to me to be different crowds, but probably just regulars who came in when i wasn't there and heard about the jackass. To be all alone in a place wherein you are so blatantly disliked, by pretty much everyone, is quite a rush. It's like absolutely freedom. I'm not using myself alone as an example, I've had four or five friends express the same feeling. The thing is, we would go there alot, and this would still happen, and we would always be in the minority. Of course people are good humored to your face and nobody throws punches or gets mean, they just like to fuck with people, make them uncomfortable if they or someone they know doesn't like them. I think this is fantastic and makes what otherwise would be a remarkably average bar I got into when I was 15 on an Oklahoma i.d. that had "novelty" written on the back. exciting You don't see teens there now, though. It's a decision, though, because if it is dead, you have the tavern, and the lounge- rarely is one dead and any of the others kicking. So you must commit. I prefer the Inwood Tavern, and for the drinks the lounge, but I would be lying if I said that I didn't love the TOT. It's what a bar should be. Simple, good service, full of strangers and friends who may not claim you, but not in a pretentious way, more like a, "you are about to get your ass kicked" way. Makes me think of Swayze as Dalton, though I've never seen it get that rowdy. It's in the air, and the girls are beautiful and they smile, and there's always some cat behind them who sees the exchange. The conflict throbs and the people who don't like you don't look off your stares. Having only heard about all the unforgettable times in the TOT, I knew that I had to end up there some night. And what better night than a rain storm during the World Series. I feel as though stories that occur at the TOT are similar to those Vegas stories...you know - what happens at the TOT stays at the TOT. It's not that it gives off a shady vibe, but maybe it's discreet location is demonstrative of it's almost 'speak easy' feel. Once you walk into this somewhat hidden dive you are enveloped by the Candy land of sports bars. I don't think there is an inch off the walls that isn't covered in sports memorabilia. It's as if sports stuff vomited all over the place, but the TOT successfully pulls it off. There are few and far between that can pull that off. Maybe it's because the sports flare dates back to a simpler time when sports co-mingled with bright neon lights or an obnoxious beer sponsor. Just straight up simple sports. The bartenders were attentive. And as busy as the bar was, I was able to snag a seat in all the craziness while ordering a beer all in the first five minutes of arriving. This place certainly has something for everyone and boasts all ages and demographics. Just your typical 'Cheers' bars where you come and meet up with your buds for low key or crazy night. I love the TOT!. It is very unique bar and the demographic that you'll find in this place is very diverse. Mostly locals, but there are college students, older couples and everything in between. They also have a great scotch selection. The owners are wonderful and very welcoming. Most of the bartenders are friendly as well. Great place for shuffleboard and I love browsing the sports memorabilia on the walls and ceiling. There is also a nice patio that was added on in the back a few years ago. read more

I get the "Cheers" appeal. It has loyal regulars and an understated (true) dive bar feel. There's a decent beer selection and it's very casual. It's the kind of place you could drive by a million times and never notice- strangely, this is also how I felt about neighborhood services two doors down. Since the bar doesn't serve food, there's a selection of nearby places that will deliver. So there's the benefit of more choices, but the hassle and time delay of an outside order. read more

I found this place years ago when I lived right across Inwood from it - it was within walking distance of my condo so I was game. It was AWESOME ... and it still is. It's a great dive bar and anything goes - you have a real mixed crowd, which I love. The bartenders are great - they remembered me after only being there once before (on my second of a bazillion visits). Fast and friendly service - who could ask for more?! Cold beer and strong drinks! The ONLY reason I gave it 4 stars, as opposed to 5 is because it's so damn smokey in there. I'm a non-smoker and can usually tolerate smoke (esp. after a few drinks) but it's beyond ridiculous in this little bar because of zero ventilation. read more

Hands down TOT has the best bartenders! We usually get the same two female bartenders and they're both great! This is a great place to have a good conversation at the bar. There's a few tvs in there too so you could definitely go for a game. There's no food here but they sell chips and peanuts if you like to snack while drinking. There's also a pool table and shuffle board. I believe they have cards behind the bar as well. 10/10 recommend for a Sunday fun day. read more

This is a neighborhood bar that caters exclusively to the Park Cities crowd. Unless you're a regular prepare to be ignored and treated like shit by the staff. My wife and I live near-by and always thought it looked like a cool place, so one night we stopped by after dinner. It was filled with 55+ year/old men wearing loafers and cardigans who were acting like teenagers trying to impress their wives/dates. It's definitely a place where the bartender knows your name and offers fast, friendly service...but only if you're a regular. My wife and I were barely acknowledged or spoken to during the entire hour that we sat at the bar. Not only that, but we actually had to work to flag down "Mr. Happy" (aka the bartender) just to get a second round of drinks. He was only 5 feet away! At the same time, he greeted every other person who walked in the door. It's clear that the bar staff know everyone who regularly visit Time Out Tavern. But if you're not one of them you apparently don't even rate a hello, goodbye or "thank you for coming in." It's really too bad since my other half and I did like the TOT's location and look inside. We probably would have gone back on a regular basis if the vibe was better. But alas, poor service and a lousy attitude by waitstaff are two things that I simply won't tolerate just to be part of the "in crowd." read more

Have you ever been inside a bar and thought "this place is such a dump but so cool as the same time"? That is my impression of the Time Out Tavern. It is a dive, whole in the wall bar with a string of regulars, local alcoholics, and kids pretending to be 21. It is so much fun! Not getting the appeal here. I, too, love a good dive bar. I have given the TOT several chances and I am just done. I have walked in at 4 PM, when there were a total of 5 other people in the bar (3 of whom I was meeting, mind you), and still had to wait 20 minutes for a drink. Really?! I've walked in and sat down with some of my friends who are regulars and still received slow service. And the bartenders are downright rude. I'm from a small town in the Midwest where your local bar was the only bar... and the TOT reminds me of that only bar. Most of the same bartenders have been there since I drank my first beer. They're friendly, chatty and give great service. I see one of the owners in there frequently and end up drinking next to him and his Midwestern wife at the bar on many occasions. It's consistencies like those that make this bar feel like home to me. Cue Cheers theme song... "where everybody knows your name..." :) Sports memorabilia on the walls, ceiling, etc. Half a dozen TVs, including a big screen. Coors and miller on tap, pretty wide variety of beer in a bottle and plenty of liquor choices. Juke box... love it. Shuffle board. Buck hunt. And one of those touch screen games at one of the seats at the bar. They just redid the little outdoors area behind the bar, pretty snazzy if you wanna grab a smoke or just hang out in the sunshine.
