Standard dive bar on the inside. However, they advertise an open beer garden. The beer garden is the smoking area, and the space is hardly "open". It's mostly roofed over. We opened the door to the space and got hit in the face with a wall of smoke like a forest fire. Not recommended unless you are a smoker and want a beer and all of the second hand smoke you can suck into your lungs. read more

A sad fall for one of the most beautiful rooms in the city. Landmark has allowed the theater's exterior and interior to deteriorate following their purchase from Mark Cuban's group (who did a magnificent restoration). After discussing with the corporate office they directed us to take some shots and forward - only to be run out of the place by the theater manager. This place is amazingly retro I love that it's the original architecture with updated accents They make a mean martini and have a fantastic happy hour..$5 wine or select martis/$2 domestics and $3 imports! This time I got wine to keep me out of trouble.. Bartender is super friendly It gets busy right before a movie showing but tonight it's nice and chill.. I'm taking one point off only because they are playing 60s music- just not my taste But I love the atmosphere I hope this place stays here forever.. read more

When the movie starts, the bar shuts down. Last evening they opened at 4:00 pm and quit serving about 7:15 pm. What a way to run a railroad!

This place has always been quirky but it not decrepit. Now the glass bricks are mildewed and the waterfall is blocked by algae. A bartender with the longest combover I've ever seen and loose, flowing locks was refilling the ice sink and mixing drinks. Is that within food/drink service code? The bartenders and staff used to be so cool -- eclectic ages, races and types and great at making drinks & creating atmosphere. Tonight the place seemed sad. read more

Walking into Inwood Lounge is like walking into the coolest underground dive bar where the likes of Elvis and Buddy Holly spent their time. I'm in between favorite drinks right now, so I had the bartender mix me up a martini on her recommendation. After telling her a few of my likes and dislikes, there was a mandarin martini sitting in front of me in a matter of seconds! We were also there to see a movie, so before going in to the theater the bartender made sure to give us stemless glasses. This was key, because whew... I was a little drunk by the end of the movie! Extraordinarily city-like. More like Manhattan than University Park. This has always been my favorite bar in Dallas once the Green Room/Art Bar lost its title for me. It's really even a great Tuesday bar, if you are so inclined. You are likely to encounter few patrons on off-nights, but that makes it even better. If you are looking for a scene or a love connection, move on 'til later when you haven't found either and want a good drink to remember. The drinks are always just right, from Margaritas to Cape Cods. The music is excellent, a blend of trip-hop, deep house or otherwise pleasant tunes. The Lounge is inside the classic Inwood Theatre and has always been a real destination, whether coming from down the road, as we used to do when we lived in the UP, or from north or south. The Lounge is a great place to end-up, or a great place to start. Cascading waterwalls, and the best art-deco ceiling in Dallas makes for serious retro ambiance for this old soul. I really can't come close to the experience anywhere else in town. read more

If i was going to see a movie and wanted a drink after(or before) then this is the place to be. Matter of fact this is the type of bar i could go to by myself and enjoy it. With the bar gettin a rush after the movies are out this makes for interesting small talk with the people, so nothing really gets stale about it. I have to give it up to the bartenders. they were friendly and even more so they knew what they were doing. With boasting that you have the best martini in dallas, you have to know what makes a good drink. Although i don't drink many martinis i tend to agree...it was the best i've ever had. When the movies were playing the bartenders made time for small talk and seemed very happy to have us there. They also made sure we had a drink in hand and were always on top of things Overall this is a cool place to go every once and awhile. Though the whole bar/movie thing isn't anything new this has a feel to it i can't put my finger on. Whatever it may be they are doing things right and i look forward to going there again read more

I am so disappointed with the Inwood Lounge. My wife and I have been coming here for years and the experience has changed significantly. Rude, ageist staff. They stopped serving any type of food like they have in years past. It is unclear to me if there are new owners but whatever it is they've lost me and I feel like they could care less. read more

The Lounge itself has been open for nearly thirty years, an in that time they have earned the claim of "Best Martini in Town." Not a fan of martinis? Your loss. But they also have a top-of-the-line whiskey selection, a premium well and an excellent beer selection. The Inwood Theatre has been around since the 40's and the architecture and decor still reflect the coolest aspects of that time. I'll see you there. read more

I'm a big fan of the lounge and have been for years. The whole vibe of being a part of a historic theater lays the foundation of a "classic bar" You can enter either through the theater or the outside entrance. It is dimly lit with tables and chairs and bar seats. There is a water fountain that lines the wall across the bar....the water pours down and is a nice added touch. They only play classic music (classic not classical). One night they were playing Billie Holiday and another night it was Johnny Cash. The bartenders are friendly and chatty. They are mainly known for their martinis. I have had tanguery martini, a manhattan, and an old fashion, so some pretty traditional drinks that were great. The crowd fluctuates between movies and the crowd really depends on what is playing. The last time I went I was with my 20 something brother who I believe was in the minority as the age group was in the 30's/40's. It is not the type of place to go party at. It is really for a laid back, classy evening. If you don't have someone to go with, no problem....just sit at the bar and talk with the bartenders. read more

Still greatness, although I wish they'd class up the lounge just a little bit. Bartenders are friendly and helpful, definitely, but mostly look like they're in a Deep Ellum bar from their attire. Too bad, because I always (wrongly) think "class" when I consider the Inwood Lounge. But don't get me wrong--I still love the place and, again, the staff is super cool and friendly. Of course the place is known for the martinis and they definitely have Happy Hour specials on those. Dallas has some really cool places like the Inwood Lounge. Say what you will about me, but I was totally bummed when the last of the drive in movie theaters closed in my area ... I enjoy the old style in many things. I love historical places, unfortunately people have a habit of letting them die out or run down, even when they are flipping awesome. Fortunately that hasn't happen here. As mentioned in many other reviews, this places has been around since movies were a nickle ... walking into the doors and the striking thing is that while the theater is more than twice as old as I am, it isn't run down, or nasty. There is a lot of care put into this place. The lighting is nice and mellow, the wall separating to the theater had, for lack of a better description, a "moat" with the water running down half the wall, the upper half of the wall was glass brick. Cleaver use of mirrors made the lounge look much larger than it was. Service was excellent, though you do have to go up to the bar to order, because of this the wait for drinks is more noticeable, but probably not longer than with wait service. Fortunately I saw that they do bus the dishes when a table is liberated. Though I can see this being difficult when the place gets busy. I went here based on a discussion talking about the best martinis, and I am one to tell you, this is REALLY good, The Classic, I also had a dirty, and that was also slamming good. The Cosmo was not my taste, but I can see where someone would like it. The Chocolate Cake was all of the best parts of a Mud Slide without the overly sweet creamy, which I find unpleasant. They also had one with Grapefruit, and that was surprisingly good. The music in the background was not overpowering, I could actually hear my wife while we talked, and consisted of classic rock. There were two TVs playing some older black and white films, including a montage of Kirk Douglas, but I didn't pay a lot of attention. I dragged my feet going to the restrooms (since it was an older building I was expecting something rather scary). Fortunately when I did finally go I found a rather clean and well stock modern restroom. I was very happy. All and all this was a great experience, and we plan to return. One of the things that I appreciated was the sense of humor that was salted around the place. read more

Very nice throw back vibe to this place. It is not pretentious at all and has a very laid back feel. The group that was there last Sat night was a very eclectic one indeed-and no one seemed out of place or uncomfortable. I like a place where everyone can enjoy and no airs are put on and this fit the bill. Another plus-we had Zack Galifianakis' long lost twin waiting on us! HE looked just like him. I regret that I did not try a martini but hope to rectify that situation on an upcoming return trip-hopefully in the very near future! read more

When I went here on a recent Saturday night, it had easily been about 15 years since I was last there. Reality did not hold up well to this memory. As everyone points out, the deco decor (say THAT times fast if you can) was hip. The crowd was sparse for 10 pm on a Saturday, I thought. The music was...odd. I think it may have been polka or something with yodeling. Perhaps it was intended to be ironic. I don't know. After sitting at a table and waiting about 10 minutes to be served, I decided I best go to the bar. I was intercepted halfway there by the lone wait staff telling me I could go back to my seat, and that he was on his way the take our order. True to his word, he arrived behind me, and our order was taken. My drink was good. Not the best, but pretty good. After we had finished our drinks, though, it was at least another further 15 minutes before he came to take our orders again. Because there were so few people in the bar, I could see what he was doing. He was alone in the corner cleaning glassware. Tip: There is no excuse for cleaning glasses when there are customers who need servicing. Either you are trying to get ahead so you can leave earlier, which is uncool. Or you did not clean the glassware the night before, which is not good. Or you just don't have sufficient glassware to service the light crowd that was there that night, which again is not good. Plus for the drinks, plus for friendly staff, just wish the service was quicker, given the place was pretty empty. read more

This place is truly in a class of its own. I've been coming here off and on for 20+ years (more frequently now that I live within walking distance). Very chill atmosphere, incorporating glass blocks, neon, and water features for a great throwback vibe. Solid happy hour. Britt, who makes the magic happen, is seriously the nicest guy you'll ever meet. For real. Not only does he shake up a mean gimlet, but he has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the music of the past few decades, so there's always something interesting to listen to as you imbibe and watch the old movies playing silently on the screen. The Art Deco Inwood got a face lift a few years ago after locals Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner got hold of its parent Landmark Theater chain. A water wall and glass blocks separate patrons from lobby concessionaires. For intimate gatherings of five to 20 friends, the bar's hidden-from-sight "back room" is a gem...offering a glimpse of whatever's on the big screen next door. [Confession time: I've spent every Christmas night since I turned 21 at this bar. Not that I don't love my family, but by nightfall we've had enough together time, and I'm ready to rendezvous with the rest of my loved ones.] That said, if the next time I'm celebrating a friend's birthday and the back room is full ... or it's Standing Room Only on a holiday (because, in keeping with movie release dates, this place never closes) -- I will hurt you if you don't make room for me and my pals. read more

What happened here? It used to be a great little lounge... Classics on the record player, personable and competent bartenders. I often went to see a movie and just opted to hang out in the lounge. Now it's none of that. If you want a mix drink you will probably have to tell the bartender how to make it. The staff is non-responsive, the drinks are mixed poorly, and the fountain has this weird funky foaming fungus growing in it. This former Dallas landmark is falling apart. read more

For a self-professed move dork like me, this place is next door to heaven. I had the pleasure of the company of friends here over Thanksgiving weekend, and it couldn't have been more perfect. The art deco decor is fantastic and only serves to make movie nerds nerdier. THE ENTIRE BAR SMELLS LIKE FRESH POPCORN, and they serve booze. Does it get better than that? I think not. I had a great time talking about family and friends, movies and sports, and I felt right at home here on my first trip. I think I have found my new favorite Big D bar. read more

Went here with a group of friends on a Saturday night. Bartender service was slow considering the near-empty room. We had 2 rounds of drinks and when I went to pay my bill I noticed that bartender had added a few more drinks on to my bill. We had 3 separate checks, and came in late night, I think the bartender thought we wouldn't notice. When pointed out mistake to him, rather than apologizing, he acted as if I was inconveniencing him for having to void out check and re-ring. Also, they use crappy brands in their WELL but a vodka and red bull cost $6 for the bad vodka plus $3 for the red bull (which isn't even red bull). When he presented me with the second check, he had then added another drink that my friend had already paid for on my bill. Not going back there again. The 6 of us couldn't help but get the impression that this bartender was intentionally trying to rip us off while providing slow service and a high price tag. No thanks! read more

This lounge is super tiny and inside of Inwood Theatre. I went to see RHPS and had a few drinks beforehand. There was only 1 bartender and it was super busy, but he was really trying to cater to everyone and was moving as fast as he could. Didn't get his name, but he made an awesome lychee cocktail. I also got a Deep Eddy Grapefruit and soda and he got the ratio just right. Definitely recommend it! read more

I'll preface this review by saying that I used to work at the Inwood Theater, which is attached to the Lounge. Yet, even after discontinuing my tenure there, I still frequent the Inwood Lounge very regularly....I absolutely love it. The atmosphere is dark, sensual, and supremely vintage (the place was built in 1937 and still looks it). The martinis are absolutely top-of-the-line....and, if you go on a night when Colin is tending bar, you'll get the whole experience rounded out by some great 60's jazz which he usually plays all night. This is a great place to be on Fridays and Saturdays, although the only reason I don't give it the full five stars is because of the prevalence of Highland Park douchebags that tend to be found there. Other than that, go to the Lounge with a good crowd of friends and you'll have a damned blast. read more

We took six friends with us to see the Room complete with filmmaker/actor/director/writer extraordinaire Tommy Wiseau. It was a midnight showing complete with autograph signing as well as pictures. The only complaint I have was the lack of space. There were three lines. One line was to see the film, but that wasn't noted. There was another line for autographs. Another line was both the concession stand as well as buying merchandise to be signed (you had to buy something to get it signed). The lines became mixed, because you really didn't know where to stand. This wasn't that big of an issue, but it was a bit confusing. Very clean and the staff was great. The bar is a really cool lounge. They were busy, but our drinks were made quickly and were very good. They had a great selection of beers. Only cons - need some cheese sauce for those delicious pretzels, and the line situation as I mentioned earlier. We really enjoyed our trip and look forward to going back. read more
