    Undercooked crabs
    Dannie T.

I should have been concerned when I saw large red signs saying all crab sales are final. I ordered a dozen #1 males steamed and seasoned . I waited about 20 - 25 minutes for them to steam the crabs then the cooked crabs were presented to me in a closed silver container . I paid for the crabs and left, never thinking maybe I should open this container before I leave the store. I got home, opened the container to find a dozen nice sized , partially cooked and barely seasoned crabs . I called the business immediately to rectify the situation but they were closed. For future reference , i strongly advise consumers to look at your order before leaving Ipolitos.

Sashimi tacos on the left and broiled combo on the right

Absolutely loved this market! We got the broiled combo which had half a lobster tail, scallops, shrimp, crab cake, and your choice of salmon or flounder. The seafood was all delicious (the crab cake was my favorite) and what made it even better was it was only $30! The salmon was very juicy and tender, the shrimp and scallops were great, and the lobster was meaty. The two of us also got the sashimi tacos, which were sooo good. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the dishes here, especially with such fresh seafood. We also bought a pound of shrimp to go to cook at home and they were very plump and flavorful. The market itself is pretty cool with informative diagrams about how to order seafood and has all supplies/ingredients needed to make your own meal. The option to buy any fresh seafood in the store and have then cook if for an additional $4 is cool! We will definitely be back to try that and other items on the menu. The location is close to the Broad Street Line as well as other restaurants and bars on Passyunk. Seating area is very casual and staff are all very friendly and helpful. Can't wait to try more seafood here!

Back after a three year gap and sadly demoting my star rating to three as well. With how much I loved Ippolito's on my previous visits it was the first place I wanted to go this past weekend in Philly. We arrived early on a Thursday nightand the place was fairly chaotic with people getting mad/confused when picking up their orders. It's kind of unfair to give a negative rating for the other customers but the management didn't do much to keep people in line and seemed very overwhelmed. When our food arrived I was disappointed to see that the sashimi tuna tacos are now served in a hard-shell (previously in a soft tortilla that fit much better with the delicate fish) and that the serving size was smaller. The price however, is still good at $8. My friend's ahi tuna cheesesteak was also well-priced but the bread it was served with a little stale and the cheese was barely melted. We returned on Saturday because that's how much I loved Ippolito's before and the scene was thankfully much calmer. Our food remained so-so, though, the crab-cake kind of soggy and again with stale bread. Fries here are great though, and if you eat in you'll get a great platter of sauces and homemade giant oyster crackers. I'll be back the next time I'm in Philly to give Ippolito's another chance to reclaim the title of amazing, but I won't be racing in.

Amazing menu of really fresh and extremely delicious seafood!

I yelped 'Lunch' and Ippolito's Seafood was the 2nd option with only ONE dollar sign. Despite the great rating, I was still a little nervous to try out cheap seafood. But I learned 2 things from this place: 1. It's not cheap; it's AFFORDABLE--extremely affordable. 2. In addition to their amazing and fresh produce, my favorite part about Ippolito's is the menu. SUCH a great variety of delicious seafood; *The shrimp roll is amazing. A toasty brioche bun filled--and I mean FILLED, they don't joke around--with delicious fresh shrimp that POP in your mouth with every bite. The salmon burger is off the hook, too + the best of Philly (their famous crab cake sandwich). And the people that work here are super nice, too. Ask them about each menu and they give you a detailed rundown of what it is and how it's prepared. I go here almost every day for lunch now--it's healthy, incredibly delicious, and oh, did I mention it's ridiculously affordable?

Don't get the soft shell crab bahn mi. Terrible.

Review based on soft shell crab bahn mi .Sure, it's less than $10 so did not expect the best of quality I suppose, but I've had some great ones under same price range at similar seafood spots. Here's what was terrible.... the bread was soggy and not the traditional bread used for banh mi's, the actual soft shell was poorly seasoned and fairly cold, the seasoning was also weak and finally there were some pickled veggies that were just not tasty at all. Overall, not impressed with their effort to serve a decent soft shell sandwich, which should be a specialty of theirs being a seafood spot. We also told the server and she did nothing to make the experience better. Finally, we also ordered water and she came back with warm tap water served in one of those tall plastic containers used for to-go orders, meaning not a cup at all. No effort in food and customer service is not worth going back.

Finally able to check this place out! We came on a Saturday around lunch time. The menu painted on the wall was really cool and helpful but a bit to much to look at, so I resorted to a printed menu. Being a pescetarian, there was too much to chose from which is hardly the case more than half of the time I eat out. We ordered the lobster taco, ahi tuna cheesesteak, and famous crab cake. A bit much for two, but we were a bit hungry from hiking. The lobster taco was 2.5/5 star overall. The other ingredients overpowered the actual lobster. A bit disappointing. The cheesesteak overall was a hit. It could've passed for a chicken cheesesteak on looks alone. The bread on the other hand was hard. I wished they just used a regular amoroso bread roll and nothing fancy. Lastly, the crab cake was tasteful and a hearty sandwich. I'd love to come back and check out the rest of the menu and/or possibly purchase fresh seafood from the market side. Note: no restroom and only small area with couple chairs to eat-in

I stopped in today to order blue crabs to go after calling and them hesitating to take my phone order. They have apparently been receiving complaints on the size and quality of their crabs since they don't offer refunds (sign in window). I asked someone behind the counter for 18 cooked and cleaned #1's. It was if they didn't want to do it, he pointed at the ones in the case that were already prepared. I asked him what size they were and he insisted they were a mix of #1 and #2. When I took them home, my husband couldn't have been more disappointed. There was nothing on them (barely any meat)except for old bay and loads of hot sauce! Completely disappointing. My husband said he had also called to ask their sizes, got a run around and was hung up on. I also ordered a few sides and scallops (corn on the cob and scallops are good), but when we opened up the food we were missing 2 of the sides. Customer service here is also lacking, no one seems to be friendly or willing to help.

Yum. It always when I've been around chefs over 10 years.

Today's 1st time visit to Ippolito's was fantastic! I love the fresh selection of seafood. I had the tuna cheesesteak and I very much enjoyed it. But felt remorse for I had just finished coming from the gym but the sesame roll was undeniable. Josiah is awesome and we talked seafood for we were both fanatics and he hooked me up with a fresh complementary piece of fish which I promptly seasoned and baked as soon as I got home! Good job folks!

Having spent most of my life here, a few familiar joys always come to mind. Now, I'll admit--shopping for fish wouldn't usually make that list. The seafood selection is unmatched--ultra-fresh, incredibly diverse, and always beautifully displayed. But even more impressive than the product is the people. The team behind the counter is among the most professional, accommodating, knowledgeable, and all-around kind folks you'll ever encounter in a market. The frozen tuna saku here makes amazing poke, however, they were out at my recent visit so I purchased the frozen tuna steaks. I was informed by the staff member that although the tuna steak could be eaten raw it is not ideal due to the sinew. Since the difference in texture didn't sound like something I would mind too much, I figured I would purchase the steaks and see how it pans out. I could always give it a quick sear if it doesn't work out. I prepared the tuna shortly after it defrosted in the fridge and noticed that the tuna smelled awfully fishy! I did try a small (raw) piece marinated in soy sauce and sesame oil and it was inedible due to the intense fishiness. So I gave the tuna a quick sear after encrusting the steaks with sesame seeds. Again, waay too fishy. I had to put the tuna back in the pan to cook until they were well done and even then there was still a hint of fishiness. I've gotten tuna steaks at other markets before and they were never fishy, let alone be at this intense level. This is so disappointing because I expected better quality from here.

And, all of the seafood I've bought there has been fresh and absolutely delicious. They just celebrated 1 year of opening this month () and I cannot say enough great things about Fishtown Seafood! --- First introduced to Fishtown Seafood after an oyster shucking course at their Fishtown location, I've become a regular at the Fitler Square location. The fish is a bit on the pricier side due to their commitment towards sustainability and ethical supplier transparency, but the taste is unmatched, so I am always OK to splurge. The staff is always friendly and full of recommendations if you're not sure what seafood you'd need for your dish. I'm a huge fan of their Fish Club monthly seafood boxes. The weekly pickup is some combination of 2-3 seafood items- either being two portions/filets of fish, mussels, clams, oysters, lobster tails, crab, octopus, etc. The pickups are during their store hours, whenever is convenient for your schedule. I splurged on the monthly box instead of going out to eat and it's really great value! I highly recommend it! It let me sample seafoods I'd typically never buy. I can't wait to do the seafood boxes again when they come back. On the shelves, there are sauces for seafood (wasabi, mignonette, yuzu soy sauces, etc.), tools for oyster shucking, and canned seafood (sardines, anchovies, etc.). Their sushi (although on the pricier side as a student) felt fresh and well-portioned. I've yet to try their meal kits, and I'm confident their quality and taste will be just as exceptional as everything else I've had. The oysters are very fresh, but vary in size based on the variety. There is also an oyster shell reclaiming program where they take the shells and use them to help rebuild eroding local beaches! Overall, really great, fresh seafood! I would highly recommend Fishtown Seafood.
