Food? We ordered for take-out a large sausage & cheese pie with extra black olives and mushrooms. Including a generous tip, the bill was $25 which was a screamin' deal. The pie was not drowning in sauce, thank you very much! The sauce was excellent! It was NOT sweet; just tomatoey with the perfect amount of oregano. The toppings were generous and very nice. The cheese application was just right, not too much and not too sparse. Here's where the pizza fell flat. The crust was a pre-made crust as evidenced by the marks on the reverse. This is really too bad as a house made, yeasty dough would have elevated this pie to be an exceptional taste experience as well as earning 5 stars. Service? Efficient but brusque. They are the real deal for pizza and they know it. Ambiance? This place is hopping on a Friday night. Put in your order NOW and be prepared to wait 45 min to an hour. Finally, I'd like to say thank you to Irene's Pizza for saying no to using pizza boxes! Instead, your pie is placed in a very nice food service bag with the top puffed out so it won't rest on the hot surface. This is a much less wasteful enclosure than the typical box. We high and mighty Californians can learn much about the use of the bag! read more

We are camping at Baraga State Park and we were looking for a quick dinner after an afternoon of hiking. We found Irene's a short drive down the road and we are happy we stopped! Great pizza, friendly staff, and well worth it! It is cash or Michigan check only, so come prepared. This place is busy so plan for a 20-25 minute cook time on your pizzas. Ok most recent visit called in an order was told would be 30 mins and to hurry and give order because they were busy wow pushy lol, Anyhow did our order and got there 30 mins later was promptly told your here early? We told you 45 mins? Really and they got mad haha anyway was ready in 55mins! Little rude. Got the food and took to go as no inside dining yet! Place was same except restrooms now closed so don't go hoping to use one. As for food pizza was good and the burritos as usual have this strange taste I can't quite put my finger on but doesn't agree with my taste nor stomach and had ache the rest of the night. read more

Was u p in the area for some R&R and arrived into town late on a rainy, dark night and was hungry. Irene's Pizza has the best pizza that I have ever tasted. It's a small family-run shop that has a menu that consists of thin-crust pizzas, calzones and other fare. However, I have never strayed from the pizza. Every time I return home for vacation, holidays, etc. mom and dad know that the first meal is always an extra-large sausage and extra cheese pizza from Irene's! The tangy sauce, perfect crust and chunks of cheese make this pizza divine! Irene's allows you to dine in or get it to go. As a kid, we had eaten at Irene's a time or two, however, there's rarely a large crowd inside as the majority of patrons get their pizzas to go. If you love a good pizza, and find yourself in Baraga, Michigan for whatever reason, do yourself a favor and stop in. The shop opens at 4p and is open until 11p or midnight but is closed on Mondays. I'm struggling to understand how on earth this place is still open. Incredibly bad & slow service. I was staying at a hotel down the road for a conference in Baraga. The hotel staff recommended Irene's for a dinner option, because it's practically next door. I called them & asked if they delivered. The man who answered the phone seemed annoyed by this question & flatly said they don't do that. (Also, NO CREDIT CARDS.) Arrived & needed a table for 2. No one greeted us. A paper plate on the wall with a handwritten note on it instructed us that if they're really busy, go to the kitchen & place your order. We started to do this & were told by a very hostile woman that we should have a seat at a table & that they were "very busy." There was one other group dining in. During the hour that I was there, I saw maybe 2 customers come in to pick up a carryout pizza. This didn't seem busy enough for the downright hostile & completely overwhelmed attitude from the staff. After being seated about 20 minutes, an incredibly ticked off man stumbled out of the kitchen & walked toward us. On the way, he picked up a chair from another table & slammed it down on the ground so hard it shook the floor & startled us. He told us that they were "really busy" & it was going to be a while, but with an attitude that seemed like "why are you here?" instead of "please be patient." He told us if we wanted plates or napkins, we would need to get them ourselves from the table by the kitchen. We placed a beverage order (just soft drinks, they don't have alcohol). It took about another 20 minutes to get our soft drinks. While we were there, a group of 10 came in. They got the same annoyed attitude from the staff & were scolded for following the directions on the paper plate on the wall to order at the kitchen. I guess 20 minutes wait for placing a drink order & the scolding from the staff was too much for them. They walked out without being served. The man & woman running the place didn't seem bothered by the loss of these customers. Another 20 minutes later (now there an hour), we approached the waitress & asked how our CHEESE PIZZA (nothing out of the ordinary that should take a long time) was coming. She told us it might be going in the oven eventually some time later. We tried to get a general idea of a timeline & were told "listen, we told you that we're busy!" She then said she'd check with the cook right away & proceeded to rearrange the chairs at the empty table next to us. We sat there in awe at how bizarre the customer service was here. About 10 minutes later we just asked her (still in the dining area & not checking on the pizza or helping other customers) if we could just cancel the order & pay for our beverages. Grumpy McGrumperson the cook heard us from the kitchen & yelled "I TOLD YOU we are busy!" The locals claim that no one this far north has air conditioning. So they dine out on hot days & that makes the few restaurants busy in the summertime. But this truly did not feel busy enough to merit the level of hostility & confusion. I've seen newly hired teens juggle far more pizza orders in this much time at other pizza joints. I saw one other table with a pizza when we came in, one that came in & walked out for not being helped while we were there, & 2 carryouts. Never heard the phone ring once for new orders during our hour visit. The staff appeared to be the owners & family members. Just seemed like they were very confused about how to make a pizza. Can't say anything for the quality of the food, but based on my experience & what I observed around me, I think I made the right decision. read more

I was staying in Baraga for the night and was looking for a good meal to bring back to my hotel. The reviews at this place were high so I trusted them. I ordered a large pepperoni pizza. My initial reaction when I entered the establishment was "this place looks like a hole in the wall!" The staff was not the friendliest, the workers were using their hands to spread the pizza sauce, and they only accept cash. None of these were even the issue I was concerned about. What really ground my gears that I paid $15 for a pizza that tasted like cardboard with cheese on it. Quite honestly, I've had frozen Tombstone pizzas that were way better. In conclusion, I was very disappointed in my overall experience. I left what I didn't eat in the hotel refrigerator because it wasn't even worth eating as leftovers. read more

Irene's wasn't the BEST pizza I've ever had. But it's pretty darn good. And certainly pretty high up on my list of places I'd go back to. I went on a Tuesday for pick up. I placed my order at the restaurant and returned to pick it up. Both times there I ended up parking in the middle of the lot because of the crowd...on a Tuesday late afternoon/early evening. So if you go, be prepared for some skillful parking :) Got a pizza log. It was pretty good. GREAT dough. As far as prices go, it seemed pretty reasonable. A medium pizza is around $12 and a pizza log is around $8. Even the extra large specialty pizzas are all under $20. Not sure if people expect a $5 sauce disk when they go here, but to me those seem like good prices. read more

Irene's Pizza is the first thing on my list to order when I head home. Their Paint Shop Special was one of the first thing I wanted when I stopped being a vegetarian :) They offer a good selection of food outside of just pizza, including tacos and malts. They use real cheese and they still hand you your to-go order with the "paper" that just makes you wonder whether or not you'll make it home before you take that first slice. It definitely has its share of grease, so calorie counters... maybe make this your "cheat" day! They also offer seating inside and have a patio. read more

Am in the area for the week on a family vacation. I worked at a home style pizza shop like this one years ago near Chicago and know good pizza. This pizza was excellent and will visit here again. The pizza was hot, tasty and fireworks of delicious flavor in my mouth. We had the BBQ chicken pizza and the house special. Will recommend to friends when up in the area. Dear Irene: I would give my left nut to eat at your pizzeria every day. The sodium would eventually kill me before I turned grey but I can at least say I lived like I was dying (because I would be). THE BEST PIZZA! This is just an amazing pizza place. I have never had pizza as good as this. The prices are a little on the high side but it is definitely worth it. I never have a problem with the servers but they can get busy and when they do they tend to get a little pissy but this is a normal occurrence not matter where you go. read more

Who doesn't love homemade everything? From the crust, to the sauce, to the bread for their sandwiches, everything is made from scratch. I love this place! My only complaint is that I am too far away to eat it! Whoever said frozen pizza is better, they obviously need to re-check their taste buds! Oh and homemade sausage too! Irene's is our go-to pizza joint in the L'Anse-Baraga area. We live about 45 minutes west of Baraga (Ontonagon area) but regularly camp at Baraga State Park. We ALWAYS eat at least once each trip at Irene's... If you like thin crust style, try their Paint Shop Special but ask for it with "extra, extra thin" crust. Other reviewers have commented the pizza is greasy... well, Irene's is always heavy on the cheese, so that's where the "grease" comes from. Toppings are not skimpy either. IMO, the sandwiches are not anything special... this is a pizza joint, so I'd skip on the sandwiches. Irene's gets a lot of pickup orders, so either call ahead or be prepared to wait. read more

i asked if their pizza log was like a strombolli i thought she wanted to stab me in the eye. I never got an answer. We ordered thin crust pizzas with the log. The pizza was like hard tack with prego poured on it. Next they cut the entire pizza in two inch squares. Im not kidding.any frozen pizza would be better.The pizza log was no better and tasted like someone poured vinegar in it. great area but they really dont know good pizza. read more

The place is a bit old school and you kinda wait in youself, especially when busy. That being said, everything is made from scratch and it's definately worth the stop if you find yourself in the area.
