Great rafting company! It was my first time doing this activity and the experience was just amazing I can see myself doing it again! We had an amazing guide, Tigra, who was the absolute best; she told us a lot about the history of the Truckee River and she was knowledgeable about the area as well about rafting. On board it was just me, my partner and Tigra and we did not fall off into the river and I would like to say it's because we were that good. But we had Tigra who really explained and had the skills to guide us through the wakes with ease. 10/10 enjoyed 6 mile journey with her and hope to do it again soon! What a totally fantastic experience from booking to pictures! I've been coming to Tahoe my entire life and rafted a handful of times, but this surpassed all expectations and experiences. First of all, I had to adjust my trip last minute and Frank was able to help me find a time that worked for my group. I would have been terribly annoyed with the requests I made at that time, but Frank was a star. Arrival the morning of trip super easy and office was clean, organized, and all ready to go. Jeff, our guide was an absolute A+, like maybe the best guide/leader I've ever had on an excursion. Confident and competent with no frills. He let us know what we needed to know and we felt totally safe under his guidance. Yes, half of us flew off the boat in some bigger rapids, but Jeff very calmly got us right back in the boat. I wish I could give 10 stars, 5 for the experience and 5 for our guide, Kara (Cara?) This was absolutely the highlight of our trip to Tahoe this week. we were two adults and two kids and Kara was so good about pointing out interesting sights and folklore along the way, especially keeping the kids involved and fascinated during the two-hour trip it was a great combination of easy boating and thrilling rapids. there was no hard work involved in paddling because the current was always strong enough to push the raft along I can't stress enough how awesome Kara was. she often reviewed the safety procedures to make sure we all knew what to do, she knew the river so well and exactly which path to take through the rapids. it was exciting and exhilarating but we never felt out of control or unsafe. on top of all that, she was an easy conversationalist and really seemed to be happy on the river and love her job! We called IRIE on Wednesday for a Thursday outing (yesterday). Eric got back to us in the afternoon and said, based on the full-day trip we were interested in, that he had to make some calls to arrange it, since it was late notice and for that trip they needed two boats taking it under the terms of their license. Within 45 minutes, he had called back, saying the day was arranged! Early the next morning, we were on our way from South Lake Tahoe to the IRIE HQ in Truckee, where we met our guide Jason. Jason drove us another hour to Auburn, where we met with the other rafting company and then drove another 20 minutes to the put-in for the Middle Fork of the American River. We were slightly apprehensive about the trip, as it contained a number of Class 4 and 4+ rapids, and neither my husband or I or our 19-year-old sons had ever really rafted whitewater. It was a crystal-clear, blue-sky day, and we tackled the first grouping of rapids almost right out of the gate, including Tunnel Chute, which was exhilarating to say the least! At first we had to learn how to paddle in unison and with the smooth movements required to get through the rapid. We got the hang of it over time, however, and we got through the subsequent rapids with almost no incident. After the first cluster of larger and then several mid-level rapids, we hit flat water and enjoyed the gorgeous scenery and wildlife as we drifted along the river. Jason was great company and pointed out landmarks and shared his own stories of rafting personally and professionally. We stopped for lunch in a shady spot, and everything went great except for my being stung by a bee in the lip as I bit into my sandwich! Yowch! It didn't deter the rest of the trip, however, as the pain subsided pretty quickly. The last grouping of rapids is when the excitement really kicked in! As he was forcefully paddling through the final large rapid, my husband lost his balance on the side of the raft and flipped into the river, also causing one of our sons to fall in. My son got his brother back in the raft immediately, but it took maybe 15 seconds to get my husband back onboard, mostly because we were "deer in headlights." My husband was able to swim out of the way of the rocks, which was most critical. Jason was in command the whole time, and after our initial shock wore off, we paddled toward my husband, and Jason had him on the raft in seconds. The rest of the trip went smoothly. While mostly you hope to make it through the journey without anyone falling into the river, it made for a great story!! After this experience, we can't wait to tackle more rapids, and IRIE made it a beautiful and memorable day for our whole family. read more

K, his 7-year-old nephew A and I booked a half day class 3 rafting trip on Labor Day weekend Sunday. If you don't read the rest of my review, here're some things to keep in mind: Remember: - Wear some sort of water shoe or sandal that has straps to keep the shoe on. I wouldn't recommend flip flops. K was nice enough to buy some online at Amazon for $20 Speedo brand! - Put on tons of water resistant sunblock. - Consider wearing a rash guard or a long sleeve dri-fit shirt. I did that so my arms wouldn't burn and am glad I did for those times where we just kind of floated along. - Wear sport sunglasses that stick on your face. My Oakleys were fine, I didn't need a strap. - Check in on Yelp and get $5 off! I didn't see that until after we got back, boooo. - For guys (or girls, like I did), wear board shorts. That'll help cover up your thighs from the sun beating down on them. - Pay attention to the safety speech before you get in the raft. He goes over a lot of information and it's all applicable and good to know. We were told to meet at the office which is off the circle about a mile from Downtown Truckee. It's in the same plaza as Drunken Monkey restaurant, basically just look for the blue rafts piled on a trailer in the parking lot and you can't miss it. You go to the office to check in and register and basically hang out in the parking lot. It's a good time to put on sunblock, organize your stuff and change into whatever you're okay with getting wet. Even though on the website it says you can leave your stuff on the bus, they told us to just lock it up in our cars. And they can hold your car keys in their office, which is what we did. You get on the bus and it's about a 15-20 minute ride to the Put-In location, or as I thought he said, the Pudding area. Rob was our host and he talked a bit on the bus as to where we were going and what would happen there. When you get to the site, they hand out PFDs (lifejackets), helmets and paddles. Since I dragonboat, I was considering bringing my own PFD and knew I should've immediately when I put it on. Putting something on your body that smells like BO is disgusting and I ended up changing mine out for one that smelled less like a$$. But it still stank. Ick. I wore a hat, so I wouldn't get the same experience with the helmet and just put the helmet on over my hat. You have to climb down a dirt path to the pudding area and you gather in a circle and that's where he goes over the rules and some things you have to pay attention to. As he's doing that, the guides are setting up the rafts. I think we had a total of 5. The most number of people on a raft seems to be 6 or 7 and then the guide. Turns out Rob was our guide. He kind of reminded me of James Franco in 127 Hours. Anyway, it was my first experience and I had a great time. I didn't want anything crazy and there were a few times where you probably could get tossed out if you didn't pay attention, but as long as you follow your guide's instruction, you were fine. There are swim areas where you can get out and basically swim or float alongside the raft, so that was fun. The water was brisk, but it felt good. There are a couple of opportunities for that. The 7-year-old got out and then you have to get pulled into the boat. It's fun and I would definitely recommend it. read more

Our guides were great and friendly. The highlight of our trip probably would be the 2 jumps we made into the river from surrounding cliffs. The lunch provided was great and well earned. Fantastic experience! Our guide was Allie and she was very knowledgeable (about rafting and the area) and really good at what she does! It was a lot of fun. She kept coaching us all the way through since our group was struggling a bit -- but we got the hang of it! (I hope). She went over paddling commands and we got to practice them while we were in the calmer parts, which I found fun. She also let us take a dip in water when it was safe. Overall, I highly recommend. I was between the tahoe white water tours and this one when booking tours, and I'm glad I picked this one! White water tours just seemed like too many people and this one seemed more personable. I would be giving a 5 star rating aside from a few things not related to the actual rafting trip. Our guide Frank was outstanding and the trip was amazing. We had our own raft for our family of 5 and Frank helped each one of us have an amazing experience, no small feet with a 9 year old, 6 year old and 5 year old! The water and scenery was beautiful and the rapids were perfect for a first time experience. The few things that brought this rating down from a 5 was 1) The guides were late and we waited at this small office for neatly 40 min while they got back and other passengers were late as well that we had to wait for. With small kids on a camping trip this was difficult and put our evening plans off since we came back more than an hour late. The van also had no AC and the driver did not open windows for the 12 people packed in breathing each other's air in 80-90 degree heat was uncomfortable to say the least for the 20 minute drive. Other than that, we loved it and would recommend and do it again. read more
