Highly recommend Tahoe Paddle and Oar! We were at the main store and parked parked in their lot. The owner who was very nice told us about booking online and where to go- through the underpass of crown hotel to the beach where the beach front store was set up and where we could find the restroom. Online booking was easy. I've posted a picture of the pricing. My group of four came in early may which is not peak season so we got two paddle boards and a double kayak easily. Michael by the beach front was great, he set us up, gave us some instructions and told us about the scenery so we could plan our time accordingly. We had a great time paddling Lake Tahoe and there weren't too many people on the lake. We basically had it to ourselves. We took pictures by the rocks that Michael suggested, it was gorgeous. Today my electronic paddle board pump broke. I called and Ethan answered the phone and said they had one. I was driving back from Reno to Tahoe City. While on the way, he called to let me know he was going out for 15 to 20 minutes. I've rented SUPs and kayaks from here for the past 2 years. Online rental is super convenient, check in is fast and the folks on the water are super friendly and efficient. I rented kayak on 2 separate days and theirs was the best service. I wanted to be out on the water early on a weekday in July as the water is calmest early. Another shop did not open at 8am per their website. Another rental actually advised that 9am is as good as 8am and then served me after another customer. I walked up to this shop at their tent on the beach at 835am and asked if I could be served right away and they did. I completed online booking and we were on the water in 10 minutes. Their rates were comparable and equipment as it should be. But their prompt service is gold especially as vacation time is precious. For those looking for good service, sometimes online is not the best, need to see if the service on the beach is available. As long as cell data service on the beach is available, don't book unless they confirm they can serve you right away. Best times for calmest water on weekdays in July was 8am to before 11am. read more

There are plenty of different companies offering kayak rentals and stand up paddle boarding. Decided to go with this place. Make sure to reserve online in advance especially if you're going to be doing a full day of kayaking or paddleboarding. Their office is located in kings beach, and their actual tent where you get the equipment is down at the beach. Its kind of hard to spot their white tent especially when returning it because there's so many tents and umbrellas in the area, so make sure remember the landmarks so you dont just wonder around aimlessly. Prices are pretty cheap. Only $85 for a single kayak for 8 hours. $125 for a tandem kayak and $85 as well for a stand up paddleboard for 8 hours (full day). They recommend going to the left from the tent because you get to see some really cool rocks under water as well as a really nice public beach with rock formations that you can chill and relax on for several hours. Further down leads to the nevada side and a really nice private beach. But just be aware, security is regularly patrolling and we got asked to leave within 5 minutes of arriving. We brought a lot of snacks and water with us. They have an area on the front and the back where you can store things without them getting too wet, unless you tip the kayak over. Kayaks themselves are not very comfortable. Moments into it my leg fell asleep. Not really a good area to prop your feet up on. Also the seats back does not go up too high, so their is no back support. Fortunately there's plenty of places to get off the kayak and stretch out your back and legs. People working here are pretty cool too. You have to wear your life vest out of the area, but afterwards its up to you if you want to keep it on or off. Also they recommend you stay closer to the shoreline, just because the deeper waters can be choppier, especially when the boats and jet skis go by, but it's not like they're gonna come talk to you if you do, just be forewarned. Overall it was a fun full day. Got pretty sun burnt. Make sure to bring plenty of food and snacks. And take your time checking the sights out. And pay close attention to where their tent is so you know where to drop off the equipment. Dont forget to apply sun block regularly. Because the only thing worse than getting back late is lugging around a kayak on dry land looking for the tent when you're already tired. read more

They bring the kayaks down to water's edge to help put you in, and help get you out when you return. They're also the best prices for multiple hours on the water. The company does not charge you the full hour if you only rented for some of the hour. There's a student discount (15% off) and free parking in front of the shop. The views are absolutely breathtaking. Around the time we went (beginning of June), the water was not choppy but crisp and refreshing. It's also hard to flip over in the double kayaks even for first timers, and life jackets are provided. Customer service was friendly and straightforward. There are no lockers to keep your valuables, but you can store it in your car or leave your keys with the front desk in the shop. The experience was a lot of fun! I will be the first to tell you that I used to laugh at people on stand-up paddle boards. What kind of lame sport is this? But, now that I have actually tried it, I can't mock them anymore. Tahoe Paddle and Oar has a brick and mortar store along N. Lake Boulevard and a rental station on the beach for kayaks and paddle boards. The price was right and it is a much less expensive option than any of the beach toys with engines. Jet boats, power boats and parasailing get really expensive really fast. The most pleasant surprise was the 'lesson' we received from the staff when they realized we were first timers. Rather than rent multiple boards, we just rented one to share. Kids are required to wear life vests, but adults just need to have theirs strapped to the board. Our kids had a blast learning to paddle, but mostly going for rides on the back of the board while Mr. K or I were paddling. Kings Beach is a great place to learn to paddle since it is a very gradual slope. So you can be way out there, but the water is only a couple of feet deep. Easy for people to hop on and off. It takes a while to find your grove and it turns out it is a pretty decent core workout. An hour was plenty of time. Still not up there with my love of kayaking or canoeing, but considering it is something you can easily share, we'll most definitely do it again. read more

We had a seamless experience from reserving our tandem kayak to parking and completing the waiver to getting our gear set up at the beach. There's a small parking lot right next to the main office and you walk across the street towards the water to meet the rest of the staff. The gentleman who helped us get things set up on the water gave us some instructional tips to get started with the kayak. We had a half day booking or 4 hours, which actually turned out to be one of the better deals on the lake. It gave us plenty of time to kayak to Crystal Bay and enjoy a little picnic by the water. TERRIBLE SERVICE. I and my friend rented kayak at this store in last summer. We booked and paid $169 for the kayak through online. When we came to the store to check in, the lady work in the store told us to wait for 15 mins, then somebody with take us to the lake and give us the kayak. HOWEVER, after 15 mins, she told us that the wind on the lake is too high, so she will CANCEL our booking, and REFUND HALF OF $169 A JOKE??? After that, some American customers came to check in, she also told them the service is stop because of high wind outside. HOWEVER, I saw they came to the lake and use the kayak after we leaving. HOW COULD SHE DO THAT TO US???? On the other hand, the other kayak store was working normal, nothing stop. After 3 days, I did not see any refund in my bank transaction, I called the store, and she said "I DON'T KNOW". IT WAS OKAY, I called my bank to dispute that transaction. She was discrimination us because we are ASIAN. THE SERVICE IS SO FUCKING TERRIBLE. read more

So to start off, we didn't actually get to Paddle Board, but their stellar customer service deserves a review. We were out there today and there happened to be a bunch of fires in the state. It was so smoky and hazy that you couldn't see very far off ahead of you in any direction. We went in and asked if we could have a refund due to the conditions. Service is consistently friendly from team members both in-store and at water-front. They make the rental super easy -- simply walk across the street from the shop to the beach where they hand you a life jacket and ensure you're comfortable with everything, then they pull the kayak into the water for you and you're off! Spontaneous decision to stop at Kings Beach and kayak as we were driving around the lake. Fortunately, we came across Tahoe Paddle and Oar and we're able to make a reservation for kayaks on the spot. It was super convenient on every level. The person who worked there was helpful. We were allowed to keep our car parked in their lot while we were kayaking, saving us from paying the $10 parking fee at the public lot at the beach. Convenient location. I have never been Kayaking but they made it really easy. They are very friendly. You go across the highway to the beach and at the water turn right to pick up your Kayak. The guy who gave us our life preservers, paddles and kayaks gave us a few pointers and said we would get the hang of it in two minutes but it took me more like 10-15 minutes. We had very calm water. Great weather, no wind or chop. Kayaked Crystal Bay with guide Michael and a few paddleboarders. 3 hour tour deal (we did a 9AM-12PM tour) for $45 through Travelzoo (they also have a Groupon running currently too)! Had tried to come earlier in the summer season but they didn't have an available tour guide that day, and it was super windy, so we decided to come back before the voucher expires Sept. 25. SETUP: Crystal Bay Tour, 2 Person Minimum, normally priced at $95/ Per Person, with the deal only cost $45 per person! You can choose from Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP), single person kayak or double (tandem) kayak. The tour guide gives a quick lesson on how to operate your water vehicle of choice (how to best get on/off, position hands on the paddle, how to stand/kneel/sit on the paddleboard, etc.). For adults, wearing a lifevest is optional as long as the life vest is onboard/accessible. DESCRIPTION: Most popular tour (there are 2 offered), starts at the shop and then from the beach heads east towards Speedboat Beach which has natural hot springs and gigantic boulder mazes along the way... and then you actually paddle across the California-Nevada border around Brockway Point into spectacular Crystal Bay. We even saw some of the predatory ducks diving for fish, hot springs steaming off the rocks, a pretty neat home built AROUND the boulders and trees, and a huge quartz rock due to the low lake level (about 4-5 feet lower than normal). Crystal Bay provided a nice stopping point to search for quartz and agate in the calm, clear water. The underwater cliff dropoff point was pretty cool too to see the dramatic change in water depth and color from green to dark blue. Boulder maze was tricky, some shallow rocks did trip us up a bit. Lots of neat history lessons and fun facts along the way as well. DURATION/LENGTH: ~2.5 hours / 4 miles roundtrip PARKING: FREE at the Tahoe Paddle & Oar Shop Definitely a fun activity if you're on the sandy North Shore of Tahoe! Paddle at your own leisure/speed with certain tour "stops," not rushed at all, actually quite relaxing! The deal is pretty much like getting two for the price of one. I wanted to try SUP and this place was a perfect choice! The employees were laidback and friendly and I was on a board within about 10 minutes. Though a first timer, I must've come off like I knew what I was doing so I admitted my novice and was happily shown the basics. I paddled out on my knees till I was past the rocks and went for it. After an hour, my body was done trying to stay standing but I loved it! Thank God for a calm and beautiful lake. :) I didn't want to walk back and pay just yet so it was nice that I could do that any time before the place closed. So Kayaking is one of my favorite things to do so even on a brief weekend trip (the first weekend in Tahoe), I had to squeeze in Kayaking! We stayed down in South Tahoe - however - the numerous kayaking places in south tahoe the entire way up until Kings Beach either were A) closed or B) Demanded $10 CASH to park (who carries cash?) So we were forced to push forward until we found a spot. Either way, it worked out. The employees were laidback, friendly and made it easy on us. We opted for the Tandem Kayak (brave!) and set out. A few notes: 1. theres a sandbar 10 ft out or so so you can't push off directly from shore. 2. There's rocks underwater for quite a good bit (we turned left) that hit your kayak so that stops your heart a bit. 3. The views can't be beat. 4. the water is freezing in early May read more

The store front employee was very considerate and told us that she wouldn't suggest us renting during the time we had come due to high winds. She recommended we come back in the morning which ended up being much nicer due to less crowds of people on the beach and calmer waters. I am scared of water activities being that I can't swim but I felt very safe with the depth of the lake and of course having a life jacket on does help as well. A bunch of us bought a Travelzoo coupon for a either kayak or SUP tour. We all chose kayaking. We got there at 9am and toured for 2 hours along Kings Beach to Crystal Bay. You go at your own pace and enjoy the scenery of not just the water, but the beautifully designed cabins/homes and big boulders/rock formations you'll paddle across. If you come to Lake Tahoe, you likely are looking to enjoy the lake. It is kinda the whole point for many people. You have the choice of boats, kayaks, jet skis, etc. I went with a kayak to explore and it was a great choice. All of your kayaks are around $25/hr. I did the 1/2 day deal for around $65. One nice feature of TP&O is that they offer free parking while you are out enjoying that rental. In Kings Beach this can be a real asset. Offering touchfree checkin at the store, then across the street, down to the water and the EZup tent and pick up the kayak. Seamless and simple. The rental comes with a lifejacket and the back of kayak has bungee cords to stow your gear. Keep in mind you are on water, so at the least ziplock your stuff. I had a bag and a carabiniere to keep it safely in place on the kayak. It will be fairly busy on the beach in that area, but the minute you paddle away it is easy to enjoy and be socially distant even if you are with others. The winds pick up on the lake in the late afternoon, so I'm not sure I would go for the late afternoon as my first choice. Be sure to lather up on the sunscreen, have glasses and a hat. Even if you just paddle out for 5 mins away from the hoards of people and then lay back and take a nap, it is worth it! read more
