I am dreading writing this review because we truly love Iron Fish, the staff, and service when we first came here a few years back. But recently last year and this year, we notice there's been a change of sushi chef and now the sushi quality has fallen below standards. This is our third time with this same negative experiences (2 take out and 1 in person) and now this prompt this one star review. The problem with the sushi is the protein (fish) is cut so super thin. The picture I included does not show how incredibly thin and skimpy the fish is. It's like paper thin thickness and to the point I can not taste the salmon or eel at all. I know the food cost has increased and you need to save cost but skimping paper thin fish in sushi and charging $18-$20 a roll is such rip off. At this point I am paying for rice, sauce, avocado, seaweed, and labor to make the sushi. Especially when we know the sushi was not made like this before. The thickness of the fish used to be the proper thickness in sushi restaurant industry. Unfortunately we cannot longer recommend Iron Fish for this reason. Paying that amount for the star (fish) of the show to be barely there is simply not acceptable. I sure hope the owner takes this feedback and change things. You can see old pictures I've taken and posted for this business and compare it to the sushi now. There's visible difference. I enjoyed this place. The staff was very nice, including who I assume is the manager. We had our infant with us and they provided him a free treat and were very playful with him. The sushi was great! I appreciated that the menu had photos accompanying the sushi, that makes it easier for me to pick. My only gripe, a small one, is they have canned drinks. I like fountain drinks for the refills. But that doesn't affect my rating at all. 5 outta 5 read more

Hmm, this place wasn't terrible but wasn't amazing. We ordered the Pfunny and the volcano. The volcano was delicious, but it had a ton of crab on top on the sushi. I'm not the biggest fan of it. The Pfunny was yummy, but I didn't realize it didn't have any rice in it. That's on me I suppose, so I should probably try different ones if I come back. Staff were very friendly! read more

The food was fine. Fish was decent and I didn't hate my choices. The poke that was in the middle wasn't the best...it felt like some pieces were older and they were just masking it with spicy sauce. It seems like a friendly neighborhood spot and I'd maybe go again despite the less than great service. I've been trying to write a review with pictures for a very long time. Every time I tell myself, "Take a picture before you dig in!" And every single time... I forget and annihilate my food. Including this time. So I give up, here we are: a pictureless review. Iron Fish is a tiny suburban sushi spot tucked into a shopping center. It's a good place for lunch or dinner at reasonable prices. I almost always get my food to go because navigating those packed tables in a wheelchair, especially at dinner, feels like squeezing into a sushi themed clown car. The tables are so close together you basically end up dining with the people next to you. The first owners ran this place like a well-oiled machine. The new owners are trying, but it's not quite the same. Still good, just not great. I order the Far West Roll every single time, no exceptions. Sometimes I'll add a Texas Roll or miso soup. I really like them, but that's the full extent of my menu knowledge. And one side note for the beer lovers: no draft options here, but plenty of sake choices. read more

This is the fourth time I've been in love with Iron fish and that love has turned into no feelings and will be the last time I ever go back. What did I do to make them so angry that they give me gas station quality sushi? -the rice taste like white rice from a Chinese restaurant with zero seasoning -the rice is not even sushi rice -the rice is undercooked and still raw -the rice has zero flavor it taste like it's from a gas station -the bright side is how fresh to sushi and everything else is You'll see on my post that I've been a loyal client of iron fish and I know that they sold the restaurant to a new owner, but this just tells me that is not worth it to come back. Look at the ratio of the rice to the salmon and the avocado on the roll. It's literally wrapped in three layers of rice and plus the rice isn't even cooked all the way look at my soy sauce dish all the rice that fell apart is inside that cup. My group ended up at Iron Fish because our regular go-to was closed, so comparisons were inevitable. My four companions preferred our usual place, Ichiban, but to me, it was too close to call. We were there at lunchtime and found that menu to be confusing. From 1130-430, it's Happy Hour, apparently, which actually makes a kind of sense. The graphics/layout of this HH menu confused all of us, in terms of what was included or not, and the server's "clarifications" weren't that helpful, so we just shrugged and ordered--and we were all pleased with the results. WTF are "deep fries"? Tempura! Is miso included with that? He said no, then brought miso for each of us! Confusion aside, I was happy with my Sashimi Bento, even though one sashimi piece (something white--don't know the name) was a bit rubbery. All in all, perfectly good sushi options for lunch with a group, good service, similar prices. If we stick with our other place, it's largely due to its more central location. read more

A nice hidden sushi spot on the edge of Pflugerville, sitting on the corner of an HEB. You'll find delicious food and great service here. It's probably the best sushi that Pflugerville offers in terms of freshness and taste, maybe on par with Sushi Zoa. The staff is friendly and playful, they might just make your experience memorable. Maybe we went on a slow night, but there seemed to be a lot of people very eager to serve guest... although this is almost never bad, I found the position of where people standing was awkward. Let me explain. The restaurant is built and arranged in a long rectangle. So we sat at the front and had two people (host and maybe manager) just standing behind us the entire time. However, everyone was super nice. Our waitress was one of the sweetest people (didn't grab her name but she had brown hair). The food was very good! I was super surprised at the quality of the fish and the amount for the price. I think this definitely will be a place we come back to. The only thing I didn't like was the calamari, I would skip that. Ambience is super nice! It feels a little fancier and a good place for dates but the prices are very reasonable. read more

Growing in in Pflugerville there aren't many great food spots, let alone sushi. I was so happy when this spot opened up, and it was a keeper! I have been here at least 20x. I have taken my parents here who started coming regularly on their own back when they had a really good lunch special. I don't think they do the same deal anymore, however. My go-to rolls are: The Far West, Mt. Fuji, Snow White, and the PlayBoy. All of the fish is fresh and of the highest quality. Prices have gone up some since the pandemic, unfortunately, like everything else. They used to include 3 sauces by default when you sat with your meal. Now they upcharge you the spicy mayo or anything else. The past few times I have gone for lunch it was slow and empty. It used to always be packed the first few years it was open. I sure hope people still come and support this spot because I would be super sad to see it go! read more

Ordered some takeout and was greeted at the door and told to wait outside. This was around noon on Saturday; there were maybe 4 people inside the restaurant. OK no problem maybe there having a meeting of some sort. But then 2 people walked and sat down and started ordering. Stopped in here for a quick bite while out shopping and the fish quality was SUPERB. I got the sushi box and a handroll. Included in the sushi box was the fish special (Madai from Japan) SO fresh, SO juicy and absolutely buttery. I didn't put any soy sauce or ginger on the fish bc I wanted to try it without anything extra. The service was polite, prompt and extremely welcoming. The vibe was quiet and had good music playing in the background. It wasn't super busy so I truly got to enjoy my experience. 10/10 would recommend anyone in the area giving them a try. Stopped in at 430 today to order the Hamachi Carpaccio to go. The Hamachi was thinly sliced which I requested however each piece was separated by a lemon slice. By the time I got home the lemon had "cooked" the yellowtail. There was no savory sauce like ponzu, just 2 packets of soy. $19 plus tip and tax. I took 1 bite and threw in trash. read more

Iron Fish Sushi and Grill is a decent sushi place in Pflugerville, I actually really enjoyed most of the pieces of nigiri, the fish and rice were good. I think the sea urchin (uni) fell short, however- it was quite bitter in taste which makes me think it was not very fresh at all. I usually look forward to this piece but was pretty disappointed, it was actually hard to eat. Otherwise the rolls were decent as well, just kinda small in size. Plenty of room for parking in their lot since they're located in a plaza. Noise level is low. read more

Ordered gyoza, Far West & Philly rolls but the Far West was the star of the show. We went in and were literally the only party there so the server was super attentive and everything came out quick. The Philly roll was one of the better ones I've had..everything was super fresh testing which is what I was hoping for. The gyozas were good but I prefer them a lil on the crispier side these were softer than I prefer but nothing serious. The sauce that accompanied the gyoza was very good it was the semi-sweet sauce. It was cool though that we got to sit in front of them making some of the sushi in front of us. Atmosphere is fine, could pass for a nice date night since it doesn't seem that loud. Free parking, right next to grocery store so you can walk around afterwards. Service was good; they were pretty attentive to us and water was always filled up. As for the sushi, it was fulfilling. It did take a while for it to come out though as we each only ordered one item. Menu has a lot of options; price was reasonable for its ascetic appeal and taste. Wished they had garlic in front of us though available on hand. Overall, I'd come back again and try the other sushi rolls that looked like it had interesting combos. read more

So I'm not much of a sushi fan... my wife is though. She really enjoyed this place. It's small and I would say intimate when dinning. They have a broad selection of great sushi cuisine. I asked the server where the fish cones from and she stated that some import from Japan. Which tells you why the price is a bit exspensive. The flavor though OMG.... so good. Have to say I'm a bit disappointed. We did take out at this place, when I go pick up around 6:30pm on Friday, not a lot of people there in person. It's a small place but feel quite empty. We ordered a couple rolls, including dragon roll, far west, shrimp tempura roll, and spicy tuna roll. I think the picture on their menu gave me high expectation and their price also mislead me to believe their sushi will be so delicious. However I'm quite disappointed by the amount of food and the quality of the food. I have to say, it's food sushi maybe for suburbs of Austin, but have quite some room to improve. What totally throw me off is the bones in their eel, could have cook longer or remove them. Won't recommend it unless you are shopping at H‑E‑B and just want something quick. read more

This is by far one of my favorite sushi spots in town! I have brought family, friends, and co-workers here. Everyone I bring loves this place and comments on how well the sushi prepared and tastes. My wife and I come here at least once a week. So far I have tried a lot of things on the menu but my favorite are the Texas rolls. The house salad is really great along with the miso soup. This place is small and gets pretty busy really fast. So it's best to come right as it opens up if this is your first time. There is plenty of parking because use of the shopping center. All the staff are friendly and they accept both Apple and Google pay. Today my buddy tried their poke bowls and man it look so delicious. I am going to have to try that next time. read more

Pretty much the only good casual sushi restaurant in this northeast side of town. How I dictate if sushi is good is if it's soft and not so chewy; not so over the top heavy vinegar taste. The classic nigiris are excellent. What's my favorite fish for sushi you ask? Escolar. The once banned stuff and I particularly like it with fried garlic crisps and shallots on top. The rice on everything is not too sour (my make or break) and fish soft and buttery. One of my favorite rolls in town is now the Eagle Five, which consists of Tuna, Salmon, White Fish, Escolar, Shrimp, Green Onion, Kizami Wasabi all on the inside. It's pretty coordinated well; clever as not a bunch of random ingredients to jack up the price. There are some Americanized traps however, like the Iron Fish special. I think a roll that's heavily deep fried to have a crunch and smothered in sauce is made for the beginner folks. read more

Emergency boat supply of sushi coming your way. Their specialty rolls (this deep fried one but I forget the name) was divine, to the point we order 3 and doubled it again later. Their hand-rolls and nigiri were scrumptious and delightful. Inside felt cozy and wait wasn't long at all for a weekend night. It was just OK. In the end with this place it is what it is. I am quite baffled by the plethora of 5-star reviews. I think we have a large variance in sushi tastes and preferences. I bookmarked Iron Fish because of the awesome! awesome! reviews, I mean most everyone was like "it's the best thing since sliced fish!!" So I went in with high hopes, but in the end it was......meh. At least the 2 dishes I chose - consisted of too much mayo / sauce and not enough of the good stuff - like fresh fish or crab. The excess mayo-sauces and extra fillers just overpowered the sushi experience for me. Sorry. I was really disappointed in the soft shell crab sushi. I think their soft shell crab is smaller and sub par in quality as it lacked meatiness, it lacked taste, it lacked flavor. I tasted too much mayo and fillers and not enough of the crab itself, and that was 10 bucks. In the words of Roberto Duran.....no mas, no mas. I won't get that again, and I don't recommend it, it was very unsatisfying. If you ate it blindfold you couldn't tell that it was softshell crab. Their Flaming Sushi Dish was in a lot of the reviews so I tried that - it was okay. It wasn't awesome or outta this world, but it was okay. Again - a lot of mayo and sauce and just teenie weenie bits of fresh fish - you know - the good stuff. I wish it had more good stuff, for the price I paid - it wasn't enough and I didn't feel I got my money's worth, I think this was $17. And that's the bottom line. When I eat sushi with fish in it, I really want to taste the fish - or crab - or seafood - itself, not just rice and mayo and fillers. It's unfortunate but true. The service was great here, they were prompt, courteous, and professional, which helped salvage the review. No complaints there - it's all good. Since this place is a wee bit outta my zip code I doubt I will return. read more

So the sushi here hits different . It would be wrong to compare their sushi with many other sushi places in Austin. They are completely fresh and taste amazing.
