It's about 3 o'clock in the afternoon on Sunday 1/9/22. The place is not very busy. It is clean. I watched my waitress eating behind the line in plain customer view in between taking my order and bringing my drink. That happens a lot but as a former general manager I would never accept that kind of behavior. The food was good and served in a reasonable time.

Imagine a plate full of the scraps from other people's tables and you can imagine my meal. I was looking for some home cooking and I didn't want to have to clean up after myself. I've been to a number of truck stops all over the country and they're usually good. Here, the wait staff was friendly, even though they were probably very tired. I looked over the menu and ordered the Steak Tips and Gravy. I thought that $8.49 was expensive but it was one of the cheaper menu items. She mentioned that I could get soup and salad for $2.79 more, I believe. I declined. The salad bar didn't look particularly good and I'm not really much for those anyway. My food arrived and I noticed that the steak tips were tough when cutting them. I almost choked or one or two pieces. Then, I noticed something different. Some were well done and others were rare, possibly with every state of cooking in-between. The mashed potatoes were crusty and the texas toast on the bottom was okay. Still, it felt like they had taken my meal from several plates and pieced it together, as though several people didn't finish their steak and they cut off the remains. Once again, the service was good but the food was not. The store had typical convenience store items, plus a number of electrical devices for use while traveling, and a number of audio books and DVDs. The prices were a bit high, considering that Walmart, CVS, etc. were close. $11.43 for the meal with drink seemed expensive also, especially given the food. MCL didn't seem a bad option afterwards. I tipped, mainly because I doubt they could be making any money with the ridiculous wait staff minimum wage.

    Right off the Interstate

Good truck stop with the usual snacks, strong coffee, clean but busy restrooms, right off the Interstate. Some tacky souvenirs, a diner style buffet restaurant, the workers here are efficient and sort of friendly.

Not great. Price is way too high for quality of food. Keep going down the road and find something else.

I ordered shrimp scampi with a side of brussel sprouts & loaded baked potato ($2 up charge). My son got a prime rib sandwich & loaded baked potato. While waiting for our food, the owner came over & introduced himself. He asked us our names & chatted with us about the food. We both enjoyed our food & pretty much cleaned our plates. I definitely want to return here to try their steak.

The ingredients are top quality and the chef really knows his stuff. I enjoyed one of the best pork chops ever, thick and juicy with a little pink as requested. Every bite had that little bit of crisp, little bit of fat, just right on the seasoning. My husband raved about his filet mignon which looked awesome. Pics included! Decor is a western feel, simple and understated. Lighting is just right. The whole place had a fresh and clean feel to it. There was some low volume Pandora or similar music feed of the classic light rock persuasion. Service was well above average and everything was so delicious. Check the little logo "branded" on the dinner rolls. We took home a bit of leftover which our waitress Lori kindly boxed up, and grabbed two slices of the pie of the day (German Chocolate) which we polished off at home. Most Thursdays there is prime rib and I'll be calling ahead on that on another Thursday in the not too distant future. But I get the impression that everything on the menu will be excellent. What a great addition to this area! Thank you TJ.

A majority of the dining area is not within the main house but within an added on area in the front. Their entrees are very approachable and reasonably priced. The only slightly ghetto experience while coming here was when they brought out the lunch special sign (a dry erase board) on a music stand and set it next to the table for a few minutes. Their entrees for lunch are heartier than just the handhelds and generally include a soup or salad, a potato and a veggie. Of course, the pasta I chose doesn't include a potato or a veggie, only a soup or salad. I picked the veal parmesean with a french onion soup. My colleagues and client ordered the single pork chop, cajun chicken (2 breasts) and the stuffed shrimp. Everyone loved their meals, especially my client who loved the shrimp. My veal was pretty good and typical. Overall, this is one of the nicer restaurants for sure in town, and it's owned by the same folks that also own another nice restaurant, Galo's.

Unfortunately, the larger dining room on the other side is the complete opposite--sterile, plain, and uninspired. It could really benefit from a decorator who could bring it in line with the vibe of the bar and outdoor areas. 17 West positions itself as the nicest (and essentially only upscale) restaurant in the New Bremen area, but it falls short of that goal. I ordered the Spicy Chicken Salad sandwich with mashed potatoes. What arrived was a croissant that looked like it came straight from the IGA bakery, topped with a single sad leaf of lettuce and a thin, pale tomato slice. The chicken salad was scooped with what appeared to be an ice cream scoop and simply plopped onto the bread. The result was a bland sandwich with almost no spice or flavor. The mashed potatoes were presented the same way--scooped and unappealing. Overall, the presentation was cafeteria-level at best, and I've had better sandwiches in hospital cafeterias. My wife ordered the Firecracker Chicken. Her side salad was tiny and unremarkable, and while the chicken leg itself tasted decent, it was still just a sauced chicken leg. At $22, it felt significantly overpriced. 17 West likely wouldn't survive in a larger city with real competition. In the New Bremen area, however, it benefits from having very little rivalry, which allows it to stay in business despite the clear mismatch between its prices and the quality and presentation of the food.
