Supposed to be a tamale with chilli
    Al R.

This is the most pathetic excuse for a tamale boat I've ever had. Do you see chilli ? Maybe a dusting. If you're going to charge people for something then put some on so can get some with each bite. And this was advertised as a large tamale. It's the same size as a Tom Tom tamale but cut in half. It looks like someone puked in the dish. The hot dog bun is cold. The hot dog is over cooked. If you're reading this review, look up another hot dog place in the area. Don't waste your money here any worse than this place.

I grew up going to Irvings and lately it has really felt like it is going down hill. I love a good dive, but everything feels dirty. The tables, behind the counter. The gentleman behind the counter handled my food with barehands, which is in violation of code. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and the chicken was so thin -- I felt so ripped off. I understand times are hard for everybody, however what they charged me for was really not okay.

We had 2 hot dogs, 2 cheeseburgers and 1 bratwurst. Easy ordering and pickup. Hot dogs were yummy, cheeseburgers were classic-- 1 sister mentioned it being a bit overcooked but we attribute that to the cooking style and wasn't a big deal; the bratwurst was good too! The mozzarella sticks and sweet potato fries as sides were amazing!!! Definitely recommend both options. Thanks, Irving's For reference: double pure beef red hot: grilled onions, relish, ketchup, sweet peppers, and celery salt. sweet potato fries and mozzarella sticks. pure beef red hot: sauerkraut and celery salt; cheeseburger with tomato, mayo, and ketchup; cheeseburger with tomato lettuce mayo and ketchup -- all $36 for 5 people.

Nothing like an authentic Chicago style hot dog. Good Chicago dog joints are all over the metropolitan area, but north of Mustard's Last Stand in Evanston, this is the only game in town. And it's right off I-94 so just a perfect location for driving home after a Northwestern home game. Service is good, no danger of some idiot putting ketchup on my dog. That's justifiable homicide you know. There are two hot dog places near where I live in Milwaukee both claiming to serve up Chicago style hot dogs but both places try to put ketchup on and of course that's why they need the bullet proof glass. I don't know who would complain about the prices here, this is the North Shore. Other than my car, the cheapest car in the lot was a two year old Jaguar. The prices here a right in line with the neighborhood. I am pretty sure I was in line behind someone's butler last time I was here. I don't know about anything else on the menu besides the hot dogs and fries, and I don't know why you would even think about ordering anything besides hot dogs and fries. Oh, sorry, yeah the polish and fries are also good. But really I wouldn't even glance at the rest of the menu. Don't forget the Omeprazole.

Irving's is a North Shore staple. I have been coming here with my family for 20+ years and have never been disappointed. The gyro burger, Chicago dogs, char-cheddar dogs, and cheddar fries are all incredible. The staff is super friendly and have all worked here for decades, love the service and friendly conversations every time we walk in. Can't wait to go back next week!

Visiting family in the area and stopped by to enjoy some Chicago deliciousness. I love that they offer both a jumbo hot dog and a double dog and you can get your dog steamed/boiled or char-grilled. Great burgers and Italian Beef too and don't forget the awesome cheddar fries with the thick cheese.

We ended getting two hamburger specials that came with fries and a drink. The price is pretty average considering the area that we are in. Other than that, the decor of the place is your typical burger joint; wide, bright and you can smell the cooking goodness nearby. Also, the customer service was pleasant. Always served with a smile and willing to help. Anywho--back to the food. We received our order in no time and decided to dine in. You get your own fountain drink and our hamburgers were filled with the works as requested; ketchup, mustard, pickles, grille onions, lettuce and tomatoes. The burger itself was really good. The meat that is utilized for the burger comes from the butcher shop next door which is Hofherr Meat Co. and they are DELCIOUS in their own right. The burger was perfectly cooked and juicy, the condiments were good and the grilled onions were so yummy and succulent, really adding a nice flavor to the burger. Overall, I really enjoyed being here and eating the food. I definitely want to come back but maybe next time, I will try eating the hot dogs instead of the burgers. If you are in the area, definitely give this place a try but it's not something that I would really go out of my way for. Still delicious though and definitely hits those hot dog and burger hankerings if you have 'em. Yum, yum for sure!

First thing, I was disappointed they had no hot dog special, you know, like 2 hot dogs, fries and a drink for x dollars. It was all a la cart. And one hot dog was $5.05, fries not included. I decided to get the Herm's special, which is supposed to be a 1/2 lb. Cheeseburger with fries and a drink. It was $18.55 so i figured it was going to be on par with Five Guys, which charges around $21 but you get a ton of fries and a really good burger. Ok, I'm waiting for my dinner. Here's where it goes off the rails... While I'm sitting, waiting for my food, the guy is making a hot dog for another customer. He's holding the bun in his left hand (no gloves), while applying the condiments. After he's done, he takes money from the customer with the same hand, and proceeds to make another hot dog, with the same unwashed hand. That's a major red flag. My burger arrived shortly after that. The burger? Good but undersized for the price. The fries were thin and average at best. Small portion for the price. I had to use the bathroom downstairs, and it was out of soap. Another red flag there. Look, Poochie's is better, cheaper, cleaner, and right down the road. Sorry, but I was disappointed with Herm's.

My usual spots are Roma's and Jay's, and I'll take Little Island's beef all day over those two. It's roasted in-house (like any proper beef should be) and less dry than you'll find at a bunch of the more well-known joints. Good bread and giardiniera as well. If the Evanston location raises an eyebrow, know that this is an old-school beef, burger and dog joint that would fit in in any Chicago neighborhood. The charburgers are standard charburgers--totally fine, but I make the journey for the outstanding beef. You'll also always find the same friendly guy manning the grill and register (owner, I think), and not much else (if any) staff. I like a place that's completely consistent in familiarity, customer experience, quality. It also may be the most inexpensive restaurant in Evanston. While beef prices have skyrocketed in recent years (an equal-sized Roma's beef is about $4 more), you get one of the best and tastiest beefs in Chicagoland here for under $8 (as of this writing). Their giardiniera cheese fries (with Merkt's--i.e., the creme de la creme of cheese-fry cheese) were also featured in Chicago mag as one of the "Nine Best Ways to Experience Giardiniera"--although I have yet to try those...
