My husband and I took our friends for a delicious dinner at Sophia Steak in Wilmette. I've been by the restaurant several times, but was pleasantly surprised on our first visit. It's much larger than it seems from the outside. It has a cool, sophisticated ambiance. We loved the eclectic artwork on the walls! Best of all was the food. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Celebrated my friend's birthday here. The restaurant was notified ahead of time so on top of one of the menus it read "Happy Birthday, xxxx" That was cool. The place was packed so reservations are a must. The ambience was dark, which seems to be a thing with steak houses. Luckily there was a table light for my companions with poor eyesight. (haha). I ordered a chocolate Martini which was well made. As a table we shared their grilled octopus and their roasted beets salad. Both amazing! For dinner I ordered their Branzini, which was a special that evening, and a side of creamed Spinach. So good. The chocolate cake for dessert is shareable and delicious as well. I honestly don't think you can go wrong ordering anything here. Service was great and attentive. Another plus is there is a free public parking lot across the street and valet if needed. read more

Back again with a part of the same crowd from a graduation party 2.5 years ago...and with the same outstanding result. Sophia is, as you'd imagine, a steak house. And a good one. Not cheap -- but really good. Terrific selection of apps and salads as well as some non-meat entrees...but steaks are the stars. We were pretty straight ahead -- the young men were both all in on ribeyes; my bride had the tuna, and I (surprisingly for me) went with the spicy chicken sandwich. All five stars. Broccoli, Brussels sprouts and potatoes gratin for sides. Plenty of food for four of us (considering two are 20 something men who still can pack in food...). Nice cocktails and wines by the glass; we went simple and traditional, but they have some interesting drinks on their menu, too. And the service. OMG the service. Professional, attentive, friendly... Jose, our server, greeted us as if we were old friends (we think he might have taken care of our group once before), and his attention (and that of his capable assistant) made an already outstanding even that much better. Can't say enough good things about Sophia (and about the Ballyhoo group's other restaurants). Not surprising, I imagine, that we ran into a bunch of friends there, too. One last thing -- have been there just for cocktails -- the bar is intimate and the service there, too, is outstanding. Top notch city quality food, drinks, and service on the North Shore. Our greeting at the hostess stand was very welcoming and warm. Why not a 5 star review? Our reservation process was horrible. We were coming for a special occasion (which we made very clear). We had to increase our reservation from 8 to 9 people (and called many weeks in advance). This somehow seemed to throw the restaurant into a tailspin. We called several times and were told the manager would "get right back to us". We never received a call. We had to constantly call the restaurant to confirm that they eventually changed it to a reservation for nine. They never called to confirm with us. They changed our time and didn't even tell us. When we arrived, our table was set for eight! We had to ask for an extra place setting. This was a special occasion and the reservation process left so much to be desired for a restaurant of this caliber. This is my new favorite steakhouse in Chicago. The steaks are delicious and perfectly cooked rare. And most importantly, they are not using that new fangled wood burning oven method, which leaves the exterior of the steaks completely charred. Not all heroes wear capes! I live in the city but by happenstance I've only eaten at the Wilmette location. Large bar and seating area up front with floor to ceiling windows that open to the street. Large dining room in back followed by another large dining room, and in the distant horizon, a group dining room into which I could peek from afar but which may have options for total privacy (so far away!). Lots of dark wood, as you'd expect. Great vibes. Delicious steaks, juicy and plump shrimp for starters, and superbly crafted cocktails. Wine list is small with high mark-ups, but the get the Chateau La Nerthe Chateauneuf-du-Pape anyway, you deserve it. Excellent service and a giant slice of delicious chocolate cake (moist!) round out a superb evening. read more

From the very start when we were seated at our spacious booth, Greg was a very polite & patient waiter who knew all about the menu items we were inquiring about and gave us wonderful recommendations! We ended up getting the flat iron steak prepared in two different ways but of course served medium rare!!! The first being Sophia style and the other just salt & pepper. Both were melt in your mouth goodness!!! The ambiance @ Sophia Steak is dark and moody almost romantic but the overall vibes are more like modern mad men steak house!!! I promise you anything that is ordered will be over the top delicious! I have never received anything that was not top notch. I also appreciate that when we were served our steaks one was not the one we had ordered and Greg corrected the error right away! The issue was resolved & very seamless!! A favorite of several colleagues of mine. Classy place with a great vibe. Dimly lit, though so be prepared. Service is always fantastic - from the hostess to the servers to the management, etc. While I only took one photo (of my cod), we had the tuna tartare, wedge salad, miso salmon and Icelandic cod. Decided to book Sophia's for a birthday dinner and it didn't disappoint! From the amazing staff to the adorable custom menu, they truly put detail into making your experience great. They split the wedge since we were splitting and it was just such a kind gesture! I ordered the branzino Friday special and my mom got the prime flat iron which was cooked to perfection and so juicy! The shiitake mushrooms with my fish really took the flavor to the next level. I loved the side of mushrooms and the lobster appetizer but the side of creamed spinach was a bit gritty for me, I like my cream of spinach a bit creamier. I have been to Sophia Steak here in the Gold Coast of Chicago three times now. All three times I have experienced a perfect dinner. Ambience - Great Quality of Food - Great Tatse of Food - Great Services - Great Vibe - Great All Round Experience - Great And this list of "Perfections" could go on and on. BTW - Sophia Steak Gold Coast is just 4 short blocks from my condo, making it one of my favorite restaurants to frequent in Chicago. On this Saturday I was playing golf up in the Wilmette area, not 4 blocks away from my condo, but 25 miles away. Our host wanted to go to Sophia Steak Wilmette for dinner, so of course that's where we went. As usual this Sophia Steak was packed, had the same menu as my local version and the food was, again, delicious! Here comes "the but" and it's significant: Our waiter was either having a bad night or he was hard of hearing, or was just a train wreck! Everything he did was just wrong. This, alone, made for an unacceptable experience. As I said above, the food was delicious; but the temperatures of our food was way off. My salad was warm instead of being ice cold. My Prime Rib was cold instead of being piping hot? Our sides, which (again) were delicious, fell flat due to temperature? I didn't get how one Sophia's could be so good and one could be the complete opposite? The proficiency here at the Wilmette Sophia was a far cry from the Gold Coast performance and at these prices, that made me sad (not mad mind you), Was I disappointed - Yes! Would I ever come back here - No! Will I still go to my Gold Coast Sophia - Absolutely Yes! I'll put this experience in my "Go Figure" file cabinet? read more

A truly wonderful experience at Sophia Steak for a Saturday night dinner date. The staff was so friendly from the host to the multiple servers that handled our table. Our server was wonderful and really made our experience even better. We had a perfect table in the back corner of the restaurant. It felt like a perfectly romantic spot away from the other tables. We had the crispy lobster and shishito appetizer and loved it. We both ordered steaks, I had the 8 oz filet and my beau ordered the skirt steak. They were both cooked perfectly. The brussel sprouts and whipped potatoes were delicious. For dessert we had the Buck Russell's Chocolate Cake, which our server kindly gave us complimentary. It can get a bit loud, so keep that in mind, but we don't mind at all. We've tried the steak, fried lobster, fish, and sides like broccoli, mashed potatoes, and fries, everything is consistently delicious. But the real standout is the dessert. Love the Lake Forest location, and we decided to give this one a try for a birthday dinner. They are very conscientious about calling to confirm the reservation, and they give the guest of honor a personalized menu - such a nice touch. I had called ahead to confirm they could handle the gluten (wheat) allergy in our party. They had a bit of a miss when they told us they do not have a dedicated fryer (meaning fries not safe for us), yet they served my daughter fries alongside a bunless burger. For people who choose to eat gluten free this is okay, but it is not okay for an allergy. We did enjoy the super green salad and crab cakes, and the chicken was just okay. I have to be honest, I am scratching my head at all these really good reviews. Ambiance is nice overall and the service was attentive. Maybe the kitchen had an off night, but none of us thought much of the food. We started off with Caesar salads and the oyster appetizer which was fine. The oyster is fried for a little twist. We then had the salmon and pork chop. The pork chop was nothing to write home about, on the dry side and over sauced. No need to add so much sauce if the meat is quality and cooked correctly. The salmon was terrible. It was completely dried out and thin. The portion was borderline embarrassing, the quality of the cut. Really disappointing. Maybe we ordered wrong and should have sticked to the steaks. But at this price point, it shouldn't matter. It should all be good. read more

The consistency amazes me at every location, I mean it's dead on from atmosphere to food temps to that final double expresso. Sophia Steak was no exception! Walking in... it's DARK with a large bar flanked by hi-tops & tables/ floor to ceiling windows overlooking the street..swanky they said. I sat at the bar and lets start with the most important part: Booze!! Surprisingly small libations list with only 4 beer selections, a dozen red/ white wine offerings, and a good sized cocktail list. The menu is not huge either but has everything a steak joint should with some twists! Starts with some cold seafood plates, appetizers, salads, 8 different cuts of steak, mains and some sandwiches. All of the steaks are *Prime* and wet aged cooked to perfection! You can also do MANY different steak enhancements and they do a Daily Special! Started with Oysters Rockefeller.. I was skeptical but these were amazing.. deep fried first then topped with spinach gratin & pernod? You must try these, trust me. For an entree I got their "Steak Sophia" which is a 10 oz Prime flat iron steak .. peppercorn crusted, roasted mushrooms & cognac cream! Cooked a perfect MR this steak was outstanding. Tried a white cheddar gratin also for a side.. so good I ate the whole dish. Finished it off with their Sticky Toffee Bread Pudding.. something I would prob never order but the bartender said you must. This was so good.. piping hot with great toffee flavor topped with very good vanilla ice cream... again I ate the whole thing as the folks next to me watched in astonishment, they said!? We started with the Green Vegetable salad and the grilled octopus, which were both so fresh and flavorful. For the entrees, my husband enjoyed the Tomahawk Pork Chop while I had the French Dip. He said he would order his again, which is a great sign. The French Dip was divine; such great flavors, textures and so much food! But even better than the cuisine was the service. We felt like special guests; our water was never less than 3/4 full before it was refilled. Our waitress was just lovely, kind and helpful. Last but not least, it's a stunning place. I made a reservation here for my husbands birthday. We absolutely LOVED it. The day before they called to get my husbands name to put on the menu which I though was so thoughtful and a great way to celebrate him. From the moment we walked in we felt so welcomed. I've never had the hostess come check on us in the middle of our meal which made us feel special. We started with the lobster and shishitos which were the best app! My husband and I both got steaks which were cooked to perfection. They also gave my husband a cake with a candle for his birthday, another special touch. I really wanted to love this place, but they fumbled the steak. The steaks we had were missing the charred flavor, but they were all very tender. The chimichurri itself tasted like it was missing vinegar and brightness. The service was extraordinary and accommodating to my GF needs. I also loved the ambience. The lighting and decor flowed and I loved that the giant doors were open to let the breeze in. Reservations for five at 5:30 and were quicky seated. Valet parking is free but plenty of street parking. We started off with cocktails and truffle fries for apps. Both were great. Service was excellent, water was always filled. Our server was great, place was cozy and vibes were nice. We ordered the ribeyes for my wife's birthday and we ordered the Sunday specials which was fried chicken. Very moist and tasty. Others ordered the filet mignon try tip or skirt steak. My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Sophia in Wilmette this evening. The crabcake was moist and stuffed mainly with jumbo lump crab meat. The filets were perfectly cooked, both tender and delicious. The mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts were nice side dishes that added value to the meals. To top off the evening, we had the keylime pie and the warm bread pudding. They were equally delicious and made with care onsite. The service and food quality were some of the best we've had on the Northshore and Erik Roemer, General Manager, deserves most of the credit.
