I'm from Chicago so we have good sushi, but Isana was INCREDIBLE sushi. Our 2 appetizers were melt-in-your-mouth delicious. We also ordered 2 rolls - I remember saying "let's not get a basic dragon roll". Wow was I wrong! Get the "generic" rolls that you would order at home... because they are out of this world fresh and incredible. Spoiler alert- this place will ruin all other fish/sushi for you. My husband and I recently visited Maui & were staying in Kihei just up the street from Isana. We ended up going back a second night in a row after our first experience. The first night was for regular dinner service at 6:30 pm & second night was for the happy hour starting at 9 pm. I used to love this place when it was a dingy part korean bbq hole in the wall. And I love it even MORE now under new management. No more korean bbq. Smart business move. Because the sushi is now top tier as compared to prior. Sushi chefs are the best thing about Isana. Best seat in the house is at the sushi bar. So remember to tip the sushi chef! Pros: friendly staff, fast service , following covid protocols , good happy hour, nice atmosphere, clean and nice decor, right by the ocean. Cons: we only ordered happy hour rolls so we can't say anything about other food. As far as happy hour rolls goes fish was not that fresh, rice was not fresh and wasn't the best sushi rice we had, it was missing seasoning. Rolls were sloppy and were falling apart. Tempura shrimp roll did not have crunchy tempura, it was more soggy so probably been cooked awhile ago. Even soy sauce tasted off, it was more salty than soy sauce we usually eat. Maybe they just use old ingredients for happy hour but we left full but not happy. Not our favourite place in Maui that we tried. read more

Have been coming to Maui for years and quite honestly have not been overly impressed with the sushi restaurants. FINALLY FOUND ISANA! The fish is so fresh. I highly recommend recommend sticking to fish that is local, stay away from the mussels, etc. The firecracker roll was my favorite. Don't expect to walk in and be seated unless by yourself. This place is busy, make a reservation in advance. The inside is nothing special/fancy, they still have all the hoods up when it was previously a benihana. It had been years since I'd been to Isana, so once my coworker mentioned that there were new owners I was excited. My birthday was this past week, so it was perfect time to invite family with us & give it a try to celebrate. There were 6 of us, so we made a reservation & were seated with a nice view of the ocean. The menu consisted majority of seafood/fish related dishes, so if that's not your thing choices are a bit limited. The owner is a known fisherman, so you know what you're eating is as fresh as can get. Everyone ordered sushi & myself & one other person wanted the won tons, but they were out, so I had to come up with a back up plan. Decided on the spicy hamachi & spider roll. Both of which were really good. You just know when you bite into fresh fish. The fried chicken was also really good & crispy which came with a shoyu mayo type sauce & served with their butter garlic rice & mac salad. One of my cousins didn't realize it came with those things, so she ordered a side of the rice separately. The mac salad was local style & the rice was pretty much fried rice without the meat which in my opinion could've used more garlic. Like any new restaurant though, a couple kinks do still need to be worked out. There were 3 times where sushi was brought to our table which wasn't ours. Not sure if that was someone else's or if there was a miscommunication somewhere. Also, we had ordered oxtail soup which ended up never coming, which ended up being fine as we were full, but that was the first thing we ordered. There were also no curtains on the window, so until the sun goes down it is in your face which if you have sunglasses it's not a big deal, but I can see it being an issue for some people. The lighting is also a bit dark in the corners of the restaurant, a couple seated behind us were pretty much in complete darkness until candles were brought to them . Other then that, I can see them doing really well. They really turned this place around with a nice remodel & just good vibes all around. Go & give this place a try! read more

Freshest sushi and ahi tuna I've ever had, ocean to table fresh. Wish they had a sample roll with their most popular sushi rolls so that I could of tried them all. Specialty rolls are always a big portion of which I could only eat one, so it was stressful to decide on just ONE from their specialty rolls. Can't wait to be back to try a new roll. Hubby ordered three basic rolls and he was the happiest, we even had some left overs to take home. Coconut Mai Tai was amazing, will definitely be my go to drink at Isana. When you're recommended a place sometimes it works out for the best other times not. This was the NOT the case we stopped by for a happy hour visit by a recommendation last week. The greeter was gracious and honest and said she only had one table , a larger one, and that it was only open for an hour. We said we knew we could get appetizers and drinks down in Under an hour. We were immediately seated and ordered right away. We got beers all the way around and ordered, California rolls, Spivey tuna rolls, tempura shrimp, fried poke, and fried chicken and we shared it family style. Everything was fresh and tasty and I'm not sure where the time went but we invested wisely and we finished up in 42 minutes, plenty of Time To clear out for the larger party they expected at the top of the hour. The place is modern and clean with a very decent front window view. Hey have pretty decent swag for the tourist wanting a go home gift! I'm still amazed the appetizers were so simple and so amazing . Incredible spot of HH and a fantastic variety of food. There is a ton of sushi but also a pretty decent variety of non-fish items and yummy soups! They have a full bar or a large sushi bar to sit at. You can also dine next to the windows and see a beautiful sunset since the restaurant faces the beach. We loved this place. we are staying nearby so we walked here about 10 minutes away. so happy we chose this restaurant. both of us had the market price pan seared ono over mash with a crab reduction sauce. food came really quick. and was so so good. finished with sharing a mud pie!! couldn't finish it. since it was really frozen we were able to bring it back to the condo minutes away. it will be tomorrow's dessert! if you haven't been here, you gotta go! Isana was a good experience, but nothing to ride home about. I've had plenty of sushi and nothing about theirs really stood out to me. They have a large assortment of rolls, big rolls, and entrees. I appreciated the variety, because there was something on the menu for everyone. I opted for a drink and the sunset roll, it was good but not amazing. Another thing that I did not love was the soy sauce selection - normally you have the option for the "lite low sodium" option or the normal one. We only had the normal one, and it was overly salty. We were celebrating a birthday so the dessert option with a candle was a nice touch for the experience. The service was decent, but not amazing. We didn't go to the restaurant because when I called for a table on May 30th, they were full. So we decided to order online for pick up. We grabbed just cold dishes. I took the caterpillar roll without unagi sauce, the rainbow roll that I shared with my husband and the spicy tuna hand roll. My husband took the salmon skin roll, the tuna avocado roll and the unagi cucumber hand rolls. My favorite was the caterpillar, but everything was delicious and fresh. I was especially impressed with the service here. All the employees from the hostesses, bar tenders and wait staff all seemed to really enjoy their job. Their interactions with dinner guests appeared very genuine and not "put on". Feels like great camaraderie among the employees. I love a restaurant that feels fresh and CLEAN and Isana definitely hits the mark. No stickiness, no dust no grime and spotless windows. Went for late night happy hour at 9pm! They also have it from 3-5pm. Love a good happy hour deal. Pros: Fresh, high quality fish. The happy hour menu has a lot of different roll options. My friends and I love unagi so we got a ton of unagi hand rolls and the eel was cooked just right, not too chewy as eel can get sometimes. Otherwise I was still pretty full from an earlier happy hour I went to at 5pm that same day so I wasn't able to fully enjoy and try other things on the menu. Sake list is also worth doing. We did. You really don't have to dress your best to come here but please be decent. Nobody wants to see your toes dragging in some sand. Li Hing Mui Margarita. Try it. The waitstaff were friendly and knowledgeable. They had so many great tips and suggestions. The crab cakes with the mango vinegrette and the jalapeño aioli were beyond imagination. So dang good. The cakes had so much crab I couldn't see the binder. It was so good to have a quality item. The California roll was fresh and yummy. An update to our review. there are a couple things to consider. 1) covid 2) how isana responded to covid. 1: damn, isana did a great job staying open and helping locals. They were open and doing take out while following all the strict guidelines the state and county mandated. 2: now that the tourists are back. the first and main reason that us and many others go to isana is Nicole! Nicole is an amazing person and is friendly to everyone no matter if they are a local or visitor. We only go to Isana if Nicole is there, her service and dedication to the restaurant is unparalleled and she puts in so much effort you can't help but want to high five her! read more

Isana's has been knocking it out of the park recently. They've got some of the best and biggest kama, that I've seen in restaurants. Go early and order the kama because it runs out pretty quick.
