She says it's coming. 20 minutes later my number is called. Its now 8:10pm and the girl behind the window says I can take a 2 dollar drink for the wait. I get home to realize the fries for 2 of my orders are missing. I attempt to call them to rectify this n all I'm getting is a busy signal. I called 10 times. I ordered, 2 orders of wings n chips, a shrimp n chips, n a burger n chips. Imagine waiting that long n still not getting your full order AND everything is cold. Round after round, toying between my fries and burger, globs of garlic sauce splattered all around and a scrumptious morsel of my burger just laying there in the box all alone. So first the good... The menu is varied and includes deviations from burgers... Like island ribs. There's also a shark burger. But I didn't bother to ask if it was really shark or not. There are a variety of topics to accompany your burger. The trademark Island Burger includes a slice of pineapple (interesting), a spoon of cole slaw (bland), and some mayo based garlic sauce that is smooth and zippy at the same time. But this was supposed to be a trip off the beat path to a 4 star burger place. And it wasn't. That's because the prime ingredient, the burger, was sub-standard. The burger was not quality meat. To its credit, it was not dripping in fat and grease, which is where most burgers, especially of the fast food or national chain variety (TGIFriday's and Chili's) get their fat from. But to its detriment, the texture was that of a cheap, frozen patty. But a good burger still retains some of its natural juices (some fat, some not) and is seasoned. This was bland dry meat dropped on a bun, which also lacked any sign of creativity. It was also dry and flakey, in a bad way. While I enjoyed giving this place a go, I would not go back. I've eaten twice from here on the Utica Ave restaurant. The first time I ordered over the phone and picked up and the second time i walked in and waited. This is a Trinidadian burger joint so one should expect the toppings to be, umm, Trinidadian. I ordered a Shark burger with fries drizzled in chadon beni and garlic sauce. My boyfriend ordered a beef burger with sweet potatoe fries. We waited a few but not too long as the food was made fresh. I also really enjoy that we can see them put the toppings on our burgers (you know, like Subway). Despite its out-of-the-way location, Island Burger gets five stars. I called for delivery 4 times today between 3p and 3:20pm. After being placed on hold during the initial call, the line was disconnected while I was on hold over 3 minutes. The same occurred during the 2nd call. The 3rd call went straight to a voice message, and on the 4th, after I had been on hold over 4 minutes, the young lady didn't apologize or thank me for the wait, she said, yeah, you ordered with us before, what's your number?" I responded, "I have." With an annoyed tone she said, "then what's your number?" This time EYE disconnected. It's unfortunate that a place I've patronized for years and have referred tens of others to has this low level of customer service at this point. The older women, who I believe is the owner, is always so courteous. I guess her staff don't have the same ethic. It's unfortunate because this was a gem. They are now crossed off my list.
