I came to Derrick Rhodes with an incomplete idea of combining a lion and a womanist symbol for a half sleeve. He was completely excited about the idea, and brought it to life. He is an artist you can sit back and trust to do excellent quality work. Professionally, he is serious about his business. I was concerned initially because it took him until the next day to get back to me. However, one thing I notice is that he absolutely does not answer his phone while he is working. People pay for his time and he gives it. He told me the next day that he was working on a tattoo late into the night and did not want to call me back late. His communication is great. I have a great deal of respect for Derrick for his artistic abilities, passion, and professionalism. I'm more than happy with his work, and will be a customer from here on out.

I wanted a man to do my butterflies because I wanted like colors in my butterflies because it is placed on my cheek face and I am a lady. Absolutely amazing! Just had a tattoo done by Andy. I booked an appointment online and it was really simple and then when I came to get it done he took his time with the stencil and the placement to make sure it was perfect. The staff was super friendly to my friends and I and the tattoo looks amazing. My friend that came already scheduled a tattoo for herself. I highly recommend island city!!! read more

Not what I expected. My tattoo's shading is horrible. I've emailed the co TWICE, no response, I've called the shop...vcml full. I texted back and forth w/artist...no resolution, no date to fix their wrong, and definitely no apology. Have 6 large tattoos AND never did I feel the need to hide them like I do THE TATTOO FROM ISLAND CITY TATTOOS...nevvvvvvvvvvvvvvver again! read more

Ray Is Amazing He did this cover-up free hand. It blends with the bio-mech piece on my arm. He spent the time to research some styles with me and then went to work. You can see samples of his art all over. He is a true artist; able to transform thoughts into imagery. I couldn't be happier. I can't wait to come back for more ink. I got a piercing by Zay - the needle fell out of my lip literally onto my lap , once the needle fell out he lost the hole that was just made through my lip and spent 3 minutes trying to jam the jewelry through my lip, the clamps popped off and hit me in the face , the piercing ended up being crooked , it was all around a terrible experience. I took the piercing out and am going to get it redone elsewhere. read more

Got my first tattoo here. Ray was really cool man, plus he had a tv hooked up in there with netflix so it was a painless process. I got a tibetan snow lion stamp on my forearm, and he transcribed it perfectly. Will be back. Ray is the best !!! The other artist appear to be good too but I deal with ray he did a back piece cover up for me and my half sleeve. FYI you know how they say don't judge a book by its cover well same case here. The shop is in the "hood" lol so it may not appear I guess you could say upscale, but it's clean and sanitary, reasonable prices, nice and talented artist :-) read more

The prices are great and the work is wonderful (depending on the artist) but of course, there are many many many flaws. I got two out of three of my tattoos done here; they were both done in the same session. I gave the artist a tip that he was genuinely surprised about (I see why now) and then attempted to get another "appointment" with him a few weeks later via Instagram. I was not able to make the "appointment" because I overslept due to just getting off work a couple hours before. Fast forward to Thursday (over a month later) and I contact the artist again to see if I could get the tattoo done for Friday (6/29). We speak on the phone and confirmed I could come in at 1. I get to the shop just a couple minutes before 1 just to be told that 1. He did not even know how I made the "appointment" or remembered the damn "appointment" (I literally spoke TO HIM ON THE PHONE THE NIGHT BEFORE) and 2. That someone else made an "appointment" via their website but he was confused as to how that even happened because apparently you can't book appointments 24 hours or less in advance on their website. So his conclusion was that he push back MY appointment and cater to the other customer. Cool. Then I go to the waiting area in the back and he asks what I wanted to get (again, all discussed the night before) and then he remembers who I was. After that he proceeds to do the other customers tattoo and completely disregards me during the fact. I waited till about 2pm and left. I am completely dissatisfied, I do not live in Baltimore; I in fact live almost a hour away. I wasted gas and time just to not get what I wanted! That was my mistake and I won't be coming here again. Work on y'all customer service and take "appointments" made serious, thanks. read more

The shop is located on a sketchy street but once upstairs inside of the shop it is spacious and clean. I was lucky enough to find street parking around the corner. This is a cash only establishment and their is an ATM outside if you need to withdraw. My friend and I were getting small tattoos on our wrist and the prices were kind of steep - granted we did just walk in and we are in downtown Baltimore, so kind of expected.... When Danny (tattoo artist ) was about to start, a piercing appointment came in so he got that done right away. His technique was good, he was very clean, using new needles and gloves - it took less then ten minutes for two of my mini tattoos. I was charged $80. My friend was charged $60 for her one cross tattoo. Danny was great and had good customer service but I probably would not come back for the prices.

They don't accept card but kindly directed me to an ATM where I got out cash. The nose ring fell out again while i was just using the ATM. I went back after getting the cash and they told me to stop messing with it, which would have been fine if I was, but as a brand new piercing I couldn't bear to touch it. Here's where it gets a little sketchy... I ask how much the piercing it. He says "20..." I hand him the twenty and I watch his eyes go to my bag where he can see I have another twenty. Then he goes "...one. And I don't have change." So I paid FORTY dollars for a "twenty one dollar" piercing (though I'm convinced it was only twenty) and on my way home it fell out again. The whole "twenty.... one" thing left a bad taste in my mouth so I didn't want to go back. Obviously, the hole closed that day. I wrongly paid forty dollars for a piercing I didn't even have for a whole 3 hours. Would not go back.

I…read morecalled the shop soon after they opened & after hearing that they take walk ins, I sent my inspiration photos, calmed myself (because my nervous excitement was very real I found myself on the cobblestone streets where Saints & Sinners is. Dwaine greeted me & gave me a concise rundown of the process. Upon hearing it was my first time, he was very warm and reassured me that I was in good hands. Waited while my design was drawn up by Dave (who is also the resident landscaper) & took in all the inspiration on the walls. There were frames and books a-plenty. About 10 minutes later, Dave tells me to come upstairs - it's getting real now! From the time he laid the stencil down to the last swipe took all of a solid 20 minutes; I hadn't even got to the juicy part of the podcast I was listening to. After my tears (happy & bittersweet ones for personal reasons) and my payment, I left the shop with my tattoo wrapped well & with stickers, pins and lollipops in my aftercare kit. Sweet. All in all, this was easily the best hour of my day & I can't wait to see how well it will heal. You have a customer in me, Dave - thank you so much.

All I wanted was my cuticles trimmed and nails shaped--no gel, dip, tips, just my natural nails. That wasn't her vibe. She skipped the buffing block and did a lousy job filing and shaping. I even had to remind her to make my nails the same length, which she huffed about. When I washed my hands, she asked if I wanted clear nail polish. I said no, and she said, "You're done." I had to ask about the warm towel and hand lotion, and she brought those out all begrudgingly. I paid in cash, and she just walked off when I asked for change to leave a tip. So, I ended up leaving my tip at the front desk, which is incredible since I've been coming here for years. I hope they provide her with some customer service training.

I didn't want acrylic so we tried this instead since I keep breaking nails with just gel polish as I'm unintentionally rough on my hands. I always get major compliments on my nails after getting them done. I really love that everyone is masked and the place is never packed, making it easy to not be close to anyone while waiting. Everyone here is very nice from the time you walk in from the time you leave. I plan to keep coming to get my nails done and may even branch out for my eyebrows and lashes.

I waited nearly an hour (my choice) for service and paid $50 for a pedicure that did not meet my expectations. The technician was pleasant, but the service felt inexperienced. My toenails were not shaped properly, my cuticles were not pushed back, several nails were left longer than requested, and my request to cut the corners of my nails was not addressed. The pedicure itself was so light that it barely felt like my feet were being worked on. I was genuinely hoping to find a new salon and wanted to love the experience, but the quality of service did not justify the wait or the price. It simply was not the right fit for me.

Came to get my first tattoo from Ray and had an awesome experience! I did a lot of research online trying to find a reputable but also affordable tattoo parlour and finally settled on this one. To be completely honest, I was a bit worried and skeptical over the "small tattoo for $25" deal but I had nothing short of a fantastic experience - a quality tattoo for a highly affordable price! Although the shop was on the smaller side, it was super clean. Ray sat down with me and helped me design my tattoo. He printed out my design in different sizes too so I could see which one would be the right fit for me. Ray made me so comfortable during the tattooing process - he talked me step by step through what he was doing and let me watch Netflix which helped to distract me from the pain. He gave me really great aftercare tips and I had no problem at all with the healing process. I definitely plan on coming here again if I ever want another tattoo! Just got my first tattoo done here by Ray and it was a great experience. Everyone was super friendly and professional. They are very obviously artists who tattoo instead of just guys doing tattoos, which I think is awesome. The whole shop is decorated with drawings and paintings that they've done. I would feel really comfortable designing a big tattoo with the guys here. Ray is hilarious and a really nice guy. He made me feel really comfortable when I was REALLY nervous haha every time he could tell I was feeling discomfort or letting my nerves get me, he would tell me to take deep breaths or just start up with another funny story. He was so quick too. It was a simple black line tattoo, about the size of a playing card, but I swear it took no more than 10 minutes. I didn't know what to expect, but it seemed really fast. My tattoo also looks EXACTLY like the sketch I brought in, which is awesome since it's a sketch by Picasso!! These guys are talented. I will be back for sure. read more

I got a tattoo from Ray yesterday and the experience was wonderful. I came in with a small tattoo that I wanted to get covered up with something a little bigger and more meaningful. A friend of a friend recommended Island City as being a great tattoo shop, especially for people of color. Everyone in the shop was welcoming and I felt a really great vibe upon arrival. I knew what I wanted so Zwayde found the image for me while Ray set up. Ray allowed two of my friends (one of whom is considering a tattoo) watch the process and he was professional, personable, and fast. I got all settled in and starting watching The Get Down and I was done! I haven't gotten a tattoo because going to Tampa (where my old artists lives) every time I want a tattoo seems to be a bit ridiculous. I think I've found a new artist. I'll definitely be back. read more

I went in with a friend that was getting his first tattoo. Ray did an amazing job!!! I asked him to look at my tattoo and see if it was possible to cover it up later. He did it that day within 15 minutes of looking at it and it looks amazing! His prices were beyond fair and the quality of work was out of this world. He definitely made sure that his clients were comfortable (there is even a tv for you enjoy and I was able to pay with card. I will be going back and I highly recommend that you do too! read more

Got a tattoo today from Ray. I've only had my tattoo's done by one other person so I was a little apprehensive going to some one new; but Ray and the guys worked with me got the design just the way I wanted and rest was a cakewalk. Like one of the precious reviews said "Don't judge a book by its cover." Live on the wild side and get a tattoo in a sketchy neighborhood! Mirela has repeatedly been caught and seen as being racist and culturally appropriating black culture. As a business with many black tattoo artists, I would fully expect the company to take responsibility and remove her from the business. She has been heard saying the N-word on multiple occasions and being blatantly racist. I would hope that this company would stop removing reviews that are truthful because of the worry of it tainting their name. Remove the problem, not the truth. read more

I just left Island City tattoo with a half sleeve done by Derrick! I don't normally leave reviews, but the service provided by Derrick was worthy of a five star review. This was my second tattoo and the entire process from start to finish was completely painless. The staff is friendly and funny, which makes the time go by fast. Derrick's work was definitely more than what I expected. I will definitely be returning to Island City Tattoo and ask for Derrick specifically. read more

I wanted to get this tattoo covered up, I went to 3 different places that told me it couldn't be done unless it was something really big over the original tattoo. I really didn't want anything too large on my back. Traveled all the way from Georgia to Maryland to get this tattoo cover up and Ray made the impossible possible!!! I was a whole month early for my appointment because I didn't pay attention to my booking, as fate would have it, Ray had a cancellation and took me in his other appointment place.
