Four of us kayaked out of Sunrise park and did about 10 miles, so we were hungry and stopped into this little gem. My cousin lives there, and based on his recommendation we were looking for breakfast or a coney. A couple of us had bowls of terrific split pea soup, we also ordered a Greek Salad (part of soup and salad) which was as good as any I've had in a while. I went there for breakfast and they were out of most of the items on the menu. Who does not have bacon at a coney? I went for my next choice and they were out is pastrami for a Rueben sandwich. Waitresses were not very friendly. Dropped off food and bill at the same time. She was at the table four times. Three times were to take my order, come back and said they were out one item and for me to pick something else and back again to tell me they out of that item and pick a third choice. Whenever I come back to Michigan, I have to do a coney run. Island Coney was a legit destination to fulfill my taste of home. Solid Coney Special with chili-cheese fries. Came back for the Tuesday Soup Special, Potatoe Kale. It's also one of my favorite dishes. A local recommendation that did not disappoint. Went there about 10:30 am on Thursday. Ordered Club sandwich. Waitress came back, no bacon. Then Ordered Dagwood and Reuben sandwich. No corned beef. She said they had not gotten deliveries. First time here!! Won't be back! Waitress brought sandwiches, left the check and never saw her again. Live on the island but will not be back!! read more

Dagwood sandwich is to die for and the daily soups are the best! Reuben soup is amazing, stuffed pepper and Hungarian soup are also delish.

Good food, love the coney's and Greek salad. Also, breakfast is very good and reasonably priced. Always good service.

You would think being on Grosse Ile this place would be top notch, but it isn't. Ordered a Greek Chicken Salad and it was horrible. The lettuce was nasty, the chicken, not even edible. There are much better Coney Island's in the area, this is not one of them. read more

This is just your basic coney. They are a little light with gravy on the country omelette, but it is still pretty good. The French toast was yummy but it is nothing fancy. The service was quick and prices are very low. read more

A little back story to this location: If you try to find visitor attractions on Grosse Ile, you will be sorely disappointed. And that suits the residents here just fine. They are an insular community that honors their intimate community above all else. This is why people choose, in part, to live on an island. Even though this may be true, they still come across as friendly, welcoming people (must be all that natural beauty of the place that does it). So, with few places to go to on the island, we wandered into the tiny downtown district and decided to stop at this new-looking, quaintly dyslexic coney: Island Coney. Upon entering the foyer, we were greeted by the not-so-pleasant smell of man-made materials off-gassing. Luckily it was confined to the small space. The rest of the interior was very clean and bright. (I found out later that they have been in business for about 2 1/2 years.) We were told to sit wherever we wanted to and I confirmed that they were a non-smoking place. The place was perking along with regulars greeting each other and having friendly conversations and not-so-friendly gossip. The specials board featured some typical standards and also a very rare muffuletta sandwich! We waited a bit too long for service due to a confusion as to which of the two waitresses was supposed to serve us. The food arrived quickly after ordering. My wife shared some of the batter-dipped french fries that came with her BLT. They were made to perfection. Not a bad little coney. Typical coney location with good food. Not a lot of options around for breakfast so this is your choice. Nice staff.

Disappointed with our take-out order. Wrap had only a little bit of taziki sauce at the top of the sandwich. The chips came from the bottom of the bag, a bit stale and not enough. The side salad contained a small hot house tomato piece, a chunk of cucumber that I have never seen on a salad and lettuce that needed to be dried and cut better. This is a pretty clean/smoke-free little coney....and when I say little, I mean little, you can reach across the aisle and touch your co-eaters...lol, We've been twice and both times service has been great, fast coffee refills (a necessity!!). I had the coney special and asked for the hotdogs that aren't cruncy/snappy....they were good. The second time had a Rueben which was EXCELLENT...the bread was crispy, not soggy like some have the tendency to be, definitely a favorite... They also have a spinach and feta omlette that is pretty tasty too......I'm sure I'll be trying a few of the favorites... read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch while visiting the island on a Saturday. Great location, small diner. The service was great, prompt and friendly. We had coneys, onion rings and fries. The onion rings were huge, flaky battered rings, not the standard prebattered frozen style I was expecting. They were generous with their ice tea refills. My wife took me to Grosse Ile because she wanted me to see where lived as a teenager. After driving around the island for a bit we were quite hungry and unsure of where to find a good restaurant. I found Island Coney on Yelp but there were only a handful of reviews written about the place. We decided to take a chance. I ordered the chicken wrap with mozzarella, pesto and almonds.... it was delicious. The atmosphere is that of a small diner but the food was fresh and the service good. If I lived close by Island Coney, I would be having that chicken wrap on a weekly basis. read more

We were so excited when they were building Island Coney as there aren't many places to eat on the island. Unfortunately the wait was a disappointment. We have tried it several times HOPING they have improved, but it's the same old thing. Mediocre food, slow service, and long wait times as the place is small. read more

Due to family living on the island, when I visit they like to go out, but not off the island, so I've dined a lot at the few places the island has to offer: Country/Yacht Club, a couple pizza places, Sharky's, Vitali's, Dairy Queen, Truly Gourmet, and the Island Coney. The Island Coney is relatively new, I think they've been around almost 3 years now, and I dined there about 5 months after they opened. It's been smoke free since it's been open, before the MI ban, so that's a plus- no old stale smoke smell. For a little back-story, it's a family owned place. A (grand)father built it, made it operational, and handed it over to his daughter and son, and eventually the daughter bought out her brother's half. Now her and her husband manage it, their son is a cook there, and his fiance is a waitress. They have a variety on the menu, from classic coney restaurant food(coneys, burgers, chili cheese fries) to a bit more classier specials(whitefish, lasagna, seafood combo). One of my favorite specials they had was the grilled Whitefish, which came your choice of potato, roll, and whatever veggie they had that night(corn, mixed, green beans, etc). The fish was served on a hot plate with slices of lemon underneath, with light garlic and olive oil. It was worth the 15$, until they changed staff recently. I'll never get it again. Generally the pricing is nothing like any other coney place you'll find in MI... it's rather an expensive coney restaurant. Most other coney islands will charge you a dollar for one fully loaded, but for Island Coney that's their ".99 cent coney Monday" special. Normally they're 2.25$. The rest of the menu is also expensive when compared to other similar places, and you get a hardly moderate amount of food for what you pay for. Will say there's definitely some staff problems, as Dave C. stated also. I've heard the owners/managers yelling at the staff in the front and back, and mind you this is a very very very small place with light music playing, so EVERYONE can hear it in there. Not professional at all in my opinion. I've been there plenty of times, but we hardly go there anymore due to the price per portion and the un-professionalism of all the staff members, and worse the manger/owners. Not worth a trip to Grosse Ile to go to the Island Coney, there's better places on the island and better coney's all around downriver. read more

Good coney dogs but no drink refills. I eat here about once a month and more often than not the waitress brings my food but doesn't refill my drink. Last time I got tired of waiting and refilled my own drink. Apparently they think that once they give you the bill their job is done, even if they bring the bill right after your food is served. read more

I've been going there since it opened and still love it. The food is very good, facility is clean and the service is excellent.
