First I want to comment about the service. Many Yelp reviews say the customer service at this restaurant is terrible with employees being outright rude and disrespectful. Although the gentleman behind the counter did not jump for joy when I walked in, he took my order efficiently and quickly. Could he have been friendlier? Sure, but he was courteous. Now for the food... I love Jamaican/island food and have had it in cities with large Jamaican populations. While the food at Island Kitchen was passable, I was disappointed. I ordered the jerk chicken platter with plantains. The portions were generous, but the rice was meh. The chicken was ok. The plantains were a bit burnt but I wish I had gotten a few more. The biggest disappointment was in the chicken pie. Not enough filling and the filling it did have was mashed. No pieces of chicken. The prices are very good. I was in the area visiting and I ordered a large Oxtail dinner, rice&peas, plantains, and cabbage. With another side of "Macaroni pie". If you're looking for an authentic Jamaican or Caribbean meal, sadly this place is NOT it. Positives: Plantain was good, oxtail was tender. Negatives: cabbage wasn't good, "macaroni pie" was dry, and the oxtail taste like they over did it with rosemary leaves. Customer Service: horrible. I walked in ready to order, and instead of being greeted and feeling welcomed I had to greet the workers as they were holding a conversation as I waited to be asked what I would like to order. The young lady then looked at me like she was annoyed that I wanted to order food. Now, I understand the cultural stereotype of some (not ALL, but some) Caribbean people having attitudes when you order at their food establishment (it's usually a cultural thing, and it's all love at the end of the day, but this was not that) this was simply poor customer service, and feeling unwelcomed. If I could describe IK in one word, it would've addictive. The food here is simply delicious. It became an instant favorite after the very first visit. Already tried the Curry Goat, Jerk Chicken, Brown Stew Chicken, and the Escovitch. Everything was great. Hard to choose one over the other. But if I had to pick just one it would be the Escovitch. Every bite was a flavor bomb. Im very much looking forward to trying the Oxtail. This plate is HEAVY! There's always 4 or 5 pieces of chicken and it's only $10.75! If spicy isn't you're thing they have curry chicken, brown stew chicken, curry chicken, oxtails, and curry goat!! I am VERY disappointed in my experience here today. I have never provided a Stella review for a place that provides such horrible service on my next visit. I arrived and ordered a large curry cabbage dish and a large curry chicken dish. When I arrived home I was shocked to see one of my plates was full of cabbage only. The last time I ordered this dish I received rice and peas, cabbage fried bananas. My wife called to speak with the owner who I made my order with but was shocked when she was defensive and hung up on her. I then called back since I was the one who placed the order and she immediately began to blame me for not specifying I wanted the vegetarian dish which I explained to her I said dish and it is listed under the vegetarian plates. In addition, I pointed at the item on the menu and she didn't care. Her reply was to hang up on me and not answer although the whole time I addressed her as ma'am and was very polite. I believe I was scammed out of my money after this order and will not go here ever again. I will advise EVERYONE to stay clear because as long as the female that owns it is in the restaurant she will be rude, defensive and incompetent. I could understand if I ordered blindly but I requested the same dishes I received clarification on the first time I went in but she clearly operates different from her husband. I would give zero stars if I could because I have BEVER met someone so confrontational who owned the business. It's simply rice and peas and no more than a 2-3 dollar investment on the owners part to secure on-going business and a great customers word of mouth. First off I'm a tough scorer. This place has amazing food and I absolutely loved the Jamaican jerk with yellow rice and cabbage! Been to this restaurant once years ago. The owner and cook misled me about the spiced temperature of the food. It looked a lot like roast beef and gravy, but was a severe shock to my tender palate.
