This review is strictly for the low cost neuter - no other vet services. I must say, after seeing all these reviews I was a little nervous, but realized most of them were for poor customer service and decided to take the risk. I came on Saturday at around 8:50AM and this place is a factory. There are dozens of cats here, many of them in traps which made me really nervous. By the time I checked in, I was number 34 on the list. I can see where they say customer service is bad, there was one particular tech who was clearly not having a good day and there is no sense of professionalism as she had no problem airing out her concerns in front of customers. There were however some great techs. The two in particular who helped us were extremely friendly and even struck up a conversation with us. We left and came back 6 hours later and they gave us detailed care instructions. Even though they had to repeat the same thing 20 times, they still did so without rushing and made sure we didn't have any questions. By the end of the night, our kitten was back to normal, just a little slower than usual. By the next day, he was 100% and isn't showing any signs of bad care. Neuter seems to be a routine thing and if you're a lucky person, you'll get a friendly and courteous tech to help you. Do understand they are churning through these neuters and applications all morning long, even though that might not be a valid excuse. All in all, I would come back here again for the low cost neuter ($72 and include rabies and distemper vaccine), but not sure if I would for vet services. read more

I wanted to switch to a vet closet to home and had heard good things about Island Rescue and thought i would give it a try. Well what a huge mistake. From the moment I walked through the front door to getting seen by the doctor everyone was so rude. So rude in fact that my puppy who is 9 months old was on a leash in the waiting room for 2 hours (with an appt) and getting a little crazy that the office manager told us to step outside bc he was disruptive. I thought I was overreacting until another customer came out and told me it was rude. I let it go and figured I would give them another try bc even if they do not have great bedside manner but good vet care I would just suck it up. Well I went again for a follow up and bloodwork for a neuter was told the bloodwork is good for one month and they will call me with results and if everything ok we can schedule. Ok go to front desk to pay the bill and was rudely told to go sit down they'll call me when bill is ready. I waited so long my daughter texted to see if everything was ok. I finally get to check out and she says do you want to schedule neuter and I ask I thought I had to wait to get blood results back and they said no you can schedule. Ok then let's schedule. She then tells me she has Jan 7 avail and I ask about bloodwork only being good for one month? The manager tells me they will extend. Ok that's nice so I ask if I can take the 8th bc the 7th is not good with my work schedule. The girl tells me basically without looking at her computer no that's all I have. Not gonna lie now I'm getting annoyed bc they continue to be so rude. So I tell her that she's very rude and the manager butts in to say how is she rude she offered you the first avail and I said bc I asked what about another date and without looking she told me no. The manger argues with me that she was not rude so I ask again what if I can't make that day then he just doesn't get neutered? She said we can look another day that week and I said that's all I was asking her to do you heard me. The manager rudely says actually I wasn't listening and I said clearly you were bc you butted in more than once. I then got angry used a few cuss words told them again how rude they were so the manager asked why do you bother to come here and I said I will not be going back. Needless to say I'll be returning to my original vet. Lesson learned! read more

Absolute worst vet place to come to. The wait time is absolutely terrible. They don't take walk ins so everything is a scheduled appointment and you still have to wait forever for them to take your pet in. Last time I was here it took almost 2 hours past my appointment time before they brought my pet in, today an hour past the appointment time to be seen. They are so horrible with time management and they just don't seem to care at all. You'd think common sense and some decency would allow them to call ahead and give you a heads up that they're running late or to reschedule but nope. They don't care at all. You show up early or on time for your appointment and wait forever. The only thing this place has going for them is that it's affordable vet care. Hello, I found a orange tabby feral cat. It took me a month to get friendly enough to bring inside. Ihave 3 other inside cats. I kept this cat separate until we slowly introduced. I had her a home and told her new family I'd have her spayed and tested. Called Island Rescue told them I have her a home. Made her an app. 2 months later. Ask not to cut her ear. Was told mark it on the paper when we drop her off. Paired to have her tested $120 total. Included request to clip her nails. Well will post pictures of Peanut her temp. Name. They didn't just ignore request and ear supposed a notch? They whacked her ear off at the top. it was nothing but abuse. She came back looking like a disgusting hack job on her ear. It was an act of negligence and an inexperienced Dr.? They would not send me the paper filled out, nor give me name of Dr. A supervisor was to call me and never did. Stay away from this place! The definition of a notch is slight v notch. This is which they replied it was. They are ferals and we have to notch. Yeah! I had her adopted! Isn't that a good thing? I've been taking my pets here for over 20 years and I believe their service and the people working here have gotten worse. I brought my kitten here for a simple spay procedure and about a week and a half later she died. We believe they gave her too much anesthesia since she didn't fully wake from surgery for over 24 hours. They didn't take responsibility for her condition and didn't hydrate her until day 2 of her being there. They called us to come in for "courtesy visits" to see how she was doing and wanted to run tests that kept coming up to anywhere from $400-900. She had an appointment the day after she passed and when I called to cancel and told them she passed away the night before, the person on the phone expressed condolences then hurried me off the phone. Most vets will offer cremation services at this point but I didn't get that at all I was just told "oh I'm sorry for your loss. Well your appointment is canceled have a good day" and was promptly hung up on without being able to get another word in. read more

I read all the horrible reviews and I need to respond. I have never had a bad experience. Ten years ago, I had my 15 year old lab put down. They were so professional and the vet was very understanding. She allowed us to spend as much time needed with her. For the last ten years I have been bringing my rescue dog. She now has Cushing disease and every time I call to speak to the vet that treated her, she spends a long time on the phone with me. She is patient and explains things in detail. read more

After bringing my dog here for nearly 9 years, they ruined it. I called to make an appointment for my dog who had an ear infection. I had brought her to one of those 24 hour emergency vets because it was quick and sudden and she was uncomfortable. Over the past 40 years, I don't think there is a veterinarian office in Suffolk County NY that I have NOT been to with at least 1 pet. I've always had pups and kitties. The last 7 years I've done more TNRg for ferals and colonies and even some I've taken in. I am overwhelmed with seeing so many caregivers who feed and shelter and DON'T spay & neuter for whatever many reasons they give. Which brings us to Island Rescue. Island Rescue is exactly what they claim to be: "RESCUE," part of the rescue community, and I am so so soooo thankful for them! I've had about 12 ferals TNR'd here within the last year alone. I found that lining up the appointment with the trapping to be very hard for homeowners who have no space and little support to hold a sometimes yowling cat till appointment time, and I've missed a few appointments (once my grandson fed the feral I locked up in my bedroom!). Last week my knee doubled in size and I couldn't walk let alone carry the trap, so I missed another appointment. ISLAND RESCUE HAS NEVER HELD MISSED APPOINTMENTS AGAINST ME AND I WILL BE FOREVER GRATEFUL FOR THAT! They never cop-a-tude, and they are fast, accurate, helpful and caring staff - many other places are not. They are also very easy to get to. The feral cat population would be so much worse on Long Island if Island Rescue was not available. I wish they would open more locations, and hopefully one day I wish they would be able to take a newly trapped feral immediately - even for TNR in the afternoons or eve appointments. The communication between "patients" and staff was misguiding and after a few opportunities to redeem themselves, it only got worse (and they became rude). After giving this place more chances, I'm finally SOLD that my dog is better off at my regular vet (at regular prices). Time is money and I love my dog. The staff twisted the truth and was outright rude to me after waiting almost 3 hours outside in the cold. PS emergency rooms don't close because of snow, so NO, you aren't the same. I'm furious at the the way the staff treated me and my beloved pet. Additionally, my dog was absolutely perfect until I brought him there (use caution). And I know my dog way better than the staff that diagnosed him before a doctor even saw him. I'm glad I went with my gut and ran out before letting them see my dog... and after reading the negative reviews re: bait and switch medicating, the waiting and seeing symptoms mysteriously arise in a perfectly healthy dog, running feels SO good. Update: After taking two Tylenol for the massive headache I got at island rescue, I made a same day appointment with my usual vet. Same consistency in service. 15 minute wait time. This was probably one of the most horrible experiences I have ever had in a vets office in 13 years of owning and fostering dogs. I am currently fostering a dog that needed a routine check up shots, HW and fecal test. I was told I needed to do an X-ray, feed him some weird stuff for nutrition when I told them he was eating fine and I only had him for two days so I'm sure he will put some weight back on. I was made to feel terrible to not take that option. Also, I told them an x-ray is unnecessary and I was made to feel like a complete ass for denying that option as well. I was told he had an ear infection, but I'm beginning to doubt he even did. It felt like they were trying to tack everything on the bill that they could. They also quoted us something totally different over the phone. To add insult to injury, I was also waiting in the waiting room for 45 minutes before going into the room which I waited another 15, saw a nurse where they took his temp, they left then another 15 ... when all was said and done I left the vets office after being there for 3 hours. It took them over 20 mins to write an invoice. I was also spoken to like an idiot the whole time by the female vet there. I was so uncomfortable, I should have left before they performed the exam on the dog. Let's just say, I made my next round of shots and neuter appointment at my normal vet and they never disappoint. The absolute WORST Veterinarian. Steer clear. She does not consider anything that pet parents have to say. Your pet's health should be a collaborative conversation. When we questioned the diabetic food that she prescribed it was not a conversation. We told her that our cat was starving because he wouldn't eat it and we needed to look at other alternatives. She told us "we can't recommend that", even though our alternative was more expensive than what she recommended and nutritionally the same. I guess she wasn't getting "a cut" because we didn't order it through her office. She is awful. Only cares about profits. We switched vets and the new vet requested the medical records. When she found that out, she sent a register return receipt package with our cat's medical record and a letter to say that she is discharging out cat and will charge us for outstanding services. Can't imagine what that would be since they will not give you your animal back until you give them a credit card! THE WORST VET EVER! And not a very nice person either. read more

They used to be reasonable, cheaper than the regular vets, but now they are right up there with them. Should we way down the road get another dog I'm just going to my get. The vet did not handle her with care, she made my cat extremely scared, she started to hiss which she has never done. I said no...the next time we were there my son brought my dog in same doctor now pushed the same test on my son who thought it was something the dog needed (which she did not) so they charge me for a $175 test.. when I complained they told me despite my SPECIFICALLY stated I did not want the test done they would refund exactly ZERO of the $175 and this came directly from the owners I was told. I spent about $1000 dollars there in the last few months and the still felt the need to trick my kid into an unwanted and unnecessary test. If I could give No stars I WOULD....... I brought a cat I was trying to help I wasn't sure if he was feral or an abounded pet. I explained this and told them he was friendly it didn't matter ....... either feral or you need to make an appointment as a pet. I opted to a feral since I was going to pay to have him neutered either way, & wanted to get it over with as I didn't want to have to stress him anymore bringing him back & forth. So they said they would neuter, give shots & notch his ear. When I came to pick him up I was told he had previously been neutered so they just gave him shots & notched his ear. WHY DIDN'T THEY CALL & TELL ME THIS.???? I would of paid for them putting him out & that would of been it. Instead they kept my money, gave him unnecessary shots & notched his ear. When I questioned this..... I was told it would of cost me more just to have the shots because it was a savings package........ WELL IF HE WAS ALREADY NEUTERED...... HE ALREADY HAD SHOTS!!!! I'm so upset ..... & it's not the money since I was going to pay anyway I just can't believe or understand why I wasn't called & asked what I wanted to do once they realized he was already neutered. Disclaimer: STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY If I could rate this place as 0 stars I would but for the sake of writing a review I will rate it as one. Recently my pet had suffered an ear injury by some of my neighbor dogs. We desperately needed help because he was in pain and due to my busy work schedule it was quite difficult for me to take him to the vet when I needed to. Nevertheless he was finally taken there. Now I assume at any rescue place or veterinary facility, they hire qualified professionals to be able to diagnose ACCURATE findings. That was not the case for this place. They probably hire people who want nothing else from you other than your money. Luckily we found a place that was much better and had given us accurate information on what I would need to do for my dog. But I'll continue the story. First they weigh him at 77 pounds when in all actuality he is 82 pounds. That was the first thing, not a big deal but whatever. Next, they tell my family that my dog needs to have surgery in his ear! Now mind you, I don't have a great deal of money to be spending all willy nilly and I certainly do not have the finances to necessarily have any sort of surgery. So I had a mild heart attack the minute I got that information. Secondly without ANY kind of CORRECT diagnoses, they administer heartworm medication when my dog does NOT have heartworm and in fact he was tested at the much better place I had gone to that had stated that he has no heartworms. Not only did they administer heartworm without any connotation or proof that he had it, but they also stated he needed surgery! Oh and it gets better. The place that they referred us to for surgery is in fact one of those KILLING clinics where if you do not have the money for surgery they will put your dog down. So the fact that they even suggested a place like that should have already been a sign that they don't really have your pet's best interest at heart! I'm sorry but if I worked at a place like this, I'd NEVER recommend my customers to go to such a horrible place. So all in all I regret EVER visiting this place as I had wasted about $130 for the exam only to get the wrong diagnoses, with no medication, antibiotics or anything to that nature. I mean you'd think that the people that work here just pull stuff out of their a***es just to get an extra buck from you. Stay FAR away from this place as you possibly can because they will try to get as much money out of you as possible along with getting an accurate and fair reading for your pet. I do not have the time or money to spend money on fluff and wrong information and Island Rescue certainly did the job. I would suggest going to Affordable Vet Care in Brookhaven. Google it. I recommend that place over this one any day and you better believe that I will NOT be going back to Island Rescue and I suggest all of you to heed this warning. If you like to waste your money on inaccurate information this may be the place for you. read more

I've been bringing my cat, Linus, to Island Rescue ever since I got him as a 7-month old kitten. He turned 10 this year, and I'm still bringing him to this facility. I think this place is very good for animals who are fairly healthy and not in a state of emergency. Yes, I've had to wait 20-30 minutes on occasion, but it's usually on the low end of time. Yes, the place smells very strongly of chemicals, but there is so much traffic in and out of there that they have to keep it highly sanitized. Yes, the receptionists aren't the sweetest or most polite people, but there are perhaps three of them handling dozens of phone calls, printing out bills, pulling medicines from shelves and explaining them to clients, and they do this from the moment they open to the very last minute of the day. On the pro side, I'm able to afford regular exams for my cat, have gotten practical advice about medication from at least two of the doctors there (one of whom saw my cat for seven out of his 10 years), and I have had the doctor actually stop and listen to my questions and concerns. They aren't rushing out of the office as I'm speaking. I have never had medication PUSHED on me...it's always been a suggestion and I have had the choice not to buy it if I don't want to. The comments that complain about long waiting times to pay their bills or get answered on the phone have to remember this is a low-cost animal care center. They don't seem to have enough funds to hire more people. But the vets are competent and I would recommend this facility with the caveat that one should bring something good to read or have enough battery life on their phones to play games or hang out on social media. If you prepare yourself to be entertained while you wait, your animal will be looked after properly for an amount that will allow you to afford to keep them. read more

Over the last year and half this place has changed staff and it's for the worst !!! These new vet techs can not control any dog so therefore result in choking my 55 lb pound, returning him to the point of gagging and hacking from being choked! This is unacceptable to treat any animal! Also they failed to read my dogs chart when he was overdue for his heart worm testing! He was there 3x since and not one person could mention this to me! 2.5 really... My family and I have been using this vet for years. We were referred by a family friend who actually changed from this vet to another one (not sure where). I have only been in there once, but my mother has gone in multiple times with my dog. The nurses are rude and not very helpful. The doctor today, we saw for the first time, was very helpful and sweet towards my dog and us as well. When paying the bill, my mother waited 36 minutes - (waiting for someone to help her and to eventually pay the bill). We were told that "if they are making medications that that's why it's taking so long", after that wait, they tried to make my mom buy medication (last time my dog took it, he was dizzy and walking into walls) so obviously we declined to take the medicine again. What made me really angry was that the nurse that my mother told about the dizziness due to the medication, all she said was "oh". As of now, after this visit, we will be looking for a new veterinarian for my dog. read more

I originally went to this clinic because my dogs had some skin issues. The first time I went they were very nice and helpful. It ended there. I was there last week and the doctor kept cutting me off and didn't want me to explain the dogs symptoms saying that she was the vet and she would figure it out. My dog was prescribed with a different antibiotic than in the past and there have been no results. When I called to ask if they could switch to an antibiotic that has worked immediately, they were very aggressive and quite rude and accused me of dictating to the doctor what I wanted. I just asked a question based on fact. I was also accused of not taking a medication the doctor prescribed and I tried to explain that I had it in my hand. Very nasty. Here's the short list... I wait at least 30-45 minutes for my "appointment" and it's a 2 1/2 hour ordeal every time I go, the place is filthy, and I feel they're always trying to up-sell me with tests that I don't want performed on my animals...let me say I'm on a budget and I can only afford the necessary testing. They also mis-diagnosed one of my dogs with a heart murmur (she has none - she's nervous) and they mis-diagnosed the other dog with skin cancer (the spot vanished). BTW, when I was there last week, I talked to a nurse about their manner and the up-selling bit, explaining my budget issues, and she told me they are required to try to generate sales for the practice. I am picking up my dog's records today to go to another vet. read more

Showed up on time for my appointment but had to wait after knocking on the door several times because I didn't have a phone. They had the nerve to tell me I was over a half hour late and said I would need to wait several HOURS before my senior cat could be seen in the heat. I told them it was a recheck and I've been waiting all this time. I went back to my car only to see that it was only 12:25. My appointment was at 12 and I got there at 11:50. I was expecting a wait considering I've had appointments before where I was waiting over two hours (not a walk-in, that's WITH an appointment!) but to be turned away and disrespected like that? No thank you. I take pride in taking care of my feline friends which is why my senior cat is still kicking at 17 years old and going strong. Honestly, when Dr. Crandall left this whole place became trash. Now they have receptionists and office workers that have no idea what they're doing. If I could give them zero stars I would. Today I had went for an emergency appointment for my six-year-old kitten. She has been experiencing an ear infection and I wanted her to be seen right away. They had told me they would see her and told me to wait in the car with my kitty. I had been waiting in the car for 2-3 hours. Since it was raining I had tried to reach the number more than three times until I got a hold somebody. They couldn't give me an exact time to when they would see the cat and didn't even know if they would see it today but they still expect me to wait in the car that amount of time with the baby kitty who is hungry and tired. Then I tried to see if there was better times throughout the week, they said no and it wouldn't be for weeks ahead . Afterwards I was told by an employee that I didn't care about my cat enough because I couldn't wait even though there was a possibility that I wouldn't even be seen then or weeks ahead. It's one thing to make me wait it's another to say I'm a bad pet owner for no reason whatsoever. What kind of customer care is that obviously I care about my cat that's why I went for a damn appointment. The whole time I talk nice and professionally and was responded back with short tempered rude and belittling responses. OfCourse I would not want my cat to go there anymore after that and I'm sure from the customer service experience alone they would've treated my cat poorly as well. Much better places and cheaper to go to other than this place. I also was told to pay 75 just for the visit alone when i know places that charge less or even dont. Will never go back read more

If you want to be dicked around this is the vet. They bill you for every unnecessary thing possible. My puppy had an emergency today and they were nothing but rude and uncaring. The lady at the desk couldn't understand us on the phone when we were talking very clear so we asked to speak with someone else and she took offense and said "excuse me ?!?!" My puppy is sick I don't have time to spell the alphabet with you on the phone after I did 20 times. She put us on hold and said "were probably going to turn you away" why have me wait on hold? Unprofessional. We took our pup so St. Francis were he got the care he needed and they took us in immediately. They don't care about the animals at island they care about the money and will dick you around and Will never give you a straight answer about any diagnosis or what's going on with your dog. They lost a patient today for being rude and uncaring. - also the last time I brought my pup was for a heart worm test in which they needed a stool sample I'm not sure what they did but my pup came out with stool all over his butt. I don't believe a lot of the negative reviews posted here. This place is a low cost vet. They don't push unnecessary meds or procedures. I found the vet to be honest, helpful and non judgmental. My former vet wanted $190 to further test my dog for heartworms. Island rescue did the exact same test for $37. They called me within 3 days with the news that she was negative. They also spayed my youngest cat, and they required a pre-op exam. That says it all. They do care. Most of these reviews are from people who expect high cost vet care at low cost. I love my animals but refuse to bring them to a vet that charges a fortune just for the atmosphere or time spent on an individual exam. They will do the best they can for you if you are on a budget. read more
