My husband and are not going to Jamaica this year for our annual vacation because we have a new puppy and he's still too young to leave alone with my mom. That being said, we have really been missing Jamaica, the food, and the people...so we stopped at Island Rootz in Watertown for lunch. It's a quaint restaurant with the nicest staff. We took home an order of Curry Goat, Jerk Pork, Rice and Peas, Vegetables, Jamaican Beef Patties, Festival, and Ting. We are so thrilled that we did! This food is the best Jamaican food that we have had outside of the actual country. I even combined my Ting with some Rum Fire - yum! We'll definitely be getting food from here more often!

I almost didn't come back, but I was in the area and was hit with the hunger bug. First time I got jerk chicken and a beef patty, which is what I usually get to test the waters with this type of cuisine. It was simply bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs with seasoning on the skin that quickly fell off and left with an unseasoned piece of chicken. The second time, the stewed chicken looked good as many menu items had been wiped off the board. The flavor on the chicken was good, but it reminded me of a recipe I make that combines soy sauce, brown sugar, and honey (among some other seasonings). Not quite what I would expect out of this cuisine. The women inside were friendly, but rung me up incorrectly both times I was in their restaurant. It is a smaller place with some tables, but seems most people just do takeout. Ohh and plantains were cold and tough. This probably should be a 2 star review, but they are a new business, I don't want to tank their average review right off the bat.

The food was excellent and very rich. The oxtail melted in my mouth and was so soft and tender.

Prices are reasonable but the food...the food is OVER THE TOP!!! I've been back 4-5 times since being introduced to it and I already have a fav - a sautéd shrimp bowl, hold the rice, double both the crack-n-cheese and sweet potatoes!!! The shrimp are HUGE & slathered in garlic butter! There's nothing wrong with the rice, but I'd rather fill-up on the crack (Mac) and sweets, both of which are OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! The service borders on brown sugar sweet, the food comes up fast so you're not kept waiting. Their food comes up in paper bowls with a clear plastic top so you can see exactly what you're getting while maintaining 75-85% recyclability!!! All in all, they've earned (& continue to earn) my highest marks. DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE!! One foot note: Because all their food is made fresh daily, when if something runs out, it's out for that day. So, if you want to have dinner and you're coming by 15 minutes before closing, you might want to call ahead and see if they're out of anything you're jones-ing for!!!

The building may be small but it's the perfect size for a busy kitchen and small front area to pick up great take-out food. Wow....can they put out some amazing down home southern food. They're all very friendly and welcoming and once again....man can they cook. I had the chopped BBQ, candied yams, collard greens, and cornbread. The chopped BBQ is spicy and vinegary. It didn't even need barbeque sauce, but you can get that as well. The candied yams had a spice that I couldn't figure out but it was addictive. I just wanted more. Collard greens were excellent. Cornbread was moist and tender. My wife wasn't that hungry so she ordered the Mac & Cheese. Warm, comforting, and cheesy. She loved it. My cornbread was so good that she ended up eating most of it. Couldn't ask for much more than that. Next time we order I'm going to try the Smothered Pork Chops.

The place is tiny and in a residential neighborhood, so if you blink, you'll miss it! The meal satisfied the craving (the fried whiting and collard greens were Banging!) But the sides were not quite like Mama's. A little pricey for the amount of food. Would possibly stop by again. It's Take-Out only!

*** DO NOT ORDER THROUGH THE YELP APP OR GRUBHUB*** Use DoorDash only…read more It was my first time ordering online, so I made this mistake tonight. I showed up for my pickup only to find that they didn't get my order. The staff told me that they only do DoorDash I had to cancel the order with GrubHub and then replace my order. Thankfully, there was enough of what I needed to get an order to go. Now that I got the unpleasant part of the story out of the way, let's talk about the amazing place that Southern Dishes is. If you've din d in a traditional southern food restaurant before, you'll recognize the setup. Meals are served cafateria style, that are portioned for you by the staff. You place an order at the counter and grab a seat or wait to be called if you're going to-go. Once your name is called you grab your tray and bring back to your table. Tonight's trip was a simple kid's meal of a (large) fried chicken strip (white meat) and mac and cheese for my son and a large collard greens (made with turkey). Having had all three before, I can vouch for their yumminess. I would be lying if I didn't say that I shared a few mouthfuls of the mac and cheese. This is the bomb, or whatever everyone is calling it. The mixture of cheeses, these crispy top, the well cooked pasta...it's the trifecta of the perfect mac & cheese. If you like collard greens, these are legit southern greens, not like the other ones that restaurants try to pass off as the real thing. The potlikker (liquid from the greens) is amazing. Other mentionables are the fried chicken, the fried fish and of course the wonderful banana pudding! For an authentic southern meal in CT, make the drive to Meriden. You will not be disappointed.
