On a recent trip to Orcas Island, it was a Saturday, midday about 1pm, that my boyfriend and I were walking around town looking for a place to grab a bite for lunch. This became much more of an effort than we thought it would be. Many places seem to close early in the day and/or are only open for dinner, or expensive. Thus, we ended up at Island Skillet. I think this place deserves more stars than the average it has now!! Yes, it is a little crappy yet charming local diner--but that's the beauty of it. Hefty, good food at reasonable prices. We ordered the TBA Sandwich (which was loaded with *real* hot slices of roast turkey - not that weird compressed stuff) and a Breakfast Burrito with all the fixin's. Yum-O. The service was fairly prompt, kind, and just a bit indifferent, as you would expect from said crappy charming diner. read more

Cute simple cafe offering a decent variety of brunch entrees. We were seated within 15 minutes on a weekend morning. Service was quick, but not too attentive and we really had to flag down someone to get assistance. Had their shrimp & avocado omelette (tomatoes, cream cheese, hash brown, toast) 9.99$ and western omelette (ham, mushrooms, onions, bell pepper, cheddar & jack cheese, pico de gallo, sour cream, hash browns, toast) 9.25$. Everything was incredibly fresh and light here. The shrimp was a bit more seafoody than usual and the hash browns lightly browned. The ingredients in the omelettes are roughly cut with some big chunks we had to chop again ourselves, which is something I've never had to do. The best thing about this place is how cheap it is. -Cheapest meal on the Island, I'm betting. The second best thing is how friendly the staff is. The menu is very diner-like, though the atmosphere does not match that at all. Eggs, bacon, toast, pancakes.... If you are looking for soy milk in your coffee, you won't find it here. The most creative item available was not on the menu: pancakes made with cottage cheese. Despite the friendliness of the staff, the service was lacking. We never got the refills or extra glass we asked for, though we waited very patiently. We finally gave up, as our waiter never approached us again after that. We probably won't be back, but we do appreciate the option to grab an affordable breakfast on the Island. read more

This place was very busy on a Sunday at brunchtime, but still had fantastic, friendly fast service and delicious food. My family and I highly recommend for breakfast or lunch. I had the huevos rancheros with the pork chorizo and it was perfect. The refried beans tasted wonderfully homemade and the flavors melded together so well. My husband had the blt and remarked on the freshness of the tomato, the hint of basil and the buttery sourdough bread, flawlessly toasted. My daughter loved her skillet burrito with pork chorizo. It was a bit large for her, but she's planning to eat it for breakfast tomorrow morning. read more

*Caveat* - This review is for takeout only as we were in a rush and the restaurant was quite busy when we arrived. We were looking to go to Roses Cafe when we discovered that Roses was closed and ended up at Island Skillet instead which is right opposite Roses. The folks here were polite but they messed up our order, which we only realized too late when we were on a whale watching cruise! The food itself tasted okay - not bad, but there are definitely much better brunch places on Orcas (Doe Bay Cafe, Roses etc) in case you only have time for 1-2 brunches. Overall, I would say I am not going to be visiting this place again if I can help it. read more

We ate here for breakfast- the food was really good but the service was pretty awful. I had the sausage breakfast sandwich with house home fried (amazing!) and my husband had the french toast with a side of bacon. They did not refill our waters at all and we had to stand at the front for several minutes waiting for someone to check us out. read more

Kind of a rude place. Called to see if they were pet friendly. (As some restaurants have outdoor patios) and before I could even finish my sentence, the person who answered the phone responded back "Washington doesn't allow pets sir". Okay, not a big deal, my group can find somewhere else to eat but I still wanted to give it try. I show up and they definitely have outdoor seating so that was a little confusing but I chalked it up to they don't want to bring the food outdoors. Oh well, I'll take it to go and meet up with our group. Once I get to the register, it appears the same person who answered the phone also seems to be the same person running the orders also informs me that they don't do to go orders because they're busy. Considering the amount of tables and people eating, I found this hard to believe but I went along. He pointed me to a gas station style food warmer filled with pre made burritos and breakfast sandwiches, how appetizing! I decided to try it out even though the gentleman seemed very disinterested in being courteous and found the food to pretty much taste like what you get at a gas station. Burrito that sat long enough to become soggy and somewhat mushy texture since it was wrapped in aluminum foil so the steam collected inside. Was bummed to have this kind of experience considering its not something I will actually have the opportunity to sit down and try their frEshly made food however the sErvice will prevent me from ever considering this place if im ever in orcas island again. This place was awesome for breakfast! Pancakes were soft and slightly chewy, loved them. My eggs Benedict was awesome. My wife said her breakfast sandwich was tasty. Definitely will go back! My fave breakfast here at the Skillet is the farmers omelet w extra spinach, home fries and gluten free bread. So many restaurant don't offer gluten options. Service is always good and staff friendly! They have warm breakfast sandwiches premade if your on the go. I haven't tried them as yet but great for folks on the way to whale tour, hike etc. read more

The prices at this place are very reasonable. I ordered the breakfast burrito with chorizo, beans and avocado. Plus pico de gallo and sour cream. I'm not sure if it was the day, the time, or what, but this felt oddly like a tourist trap to me. I'm sure it wasn't, but the experience was just a bit odd. We were seated very quickly, but none of the food really seemed that special, and even at times consistently bland throughout. Nearly everything was like that, so it was confusing because that's what we were looking forward to the most considering the previous reviews. Also, the staff were a mixed bag. Our server flat out ignored two of our orders and then charged us for food we did not order. When we confronted them about it, they made a joke about not going to a good enough school to get it right the first time. Fortunately, they did fix it, but only after their manager (I'm assume that's who the other employee was), didn't laugh at their joke, and asked them to fix it. It wasn't really a good experience in any form for me, and I won't be going back. read more

Breakfast was delicious. Split the Swiss skillet scramble and a fruit bowl with the husband. Our friend had the huevos rancheros with chorizo. Both were yummy and big servings. Service was friendly but a little slow. Breakfast burritos seem to be the specialty. Lots of "to go" orders for those. Have to try that next time! read more

Do not waste your time. The food was bland and the server was extremely condescending and disrespectful to not just us, but other customers in the restaurant. We overheard the bald server say: "this guy by the window asked for the check. Looks impatient; I'm gonna make him wait just for fun." Also, when I asked if he had vegan options, he brusquely said: "we don't consider veganism our responsibility." Rude. Thought maybe the food would be worth it. Nope. This is a far better breakfast than it is lunch restaurant. I have had several of the breakfast items and they are all good. My husband and I have tried lunch twice, ordering very different items from one another (veggie burger and turkey sandwich) and they were both average to poor. The staff is nice, but we stood waiting for someone to seat us for a good five minutes while employees smiled and walked past. There were five tables open. read more

The food was ok. I got the eggs benedict which normally a staple at most breakfast places, but not this one. The egg was over done and the sauce was not very good. Maybe I should have gotten something else, but it just sounded good and normally a good measure of how the food is going to be. As for the service......well it was not that great. Our water glasses and our coffee didn't get refilled. Even after asking our server for more and we never got checked up on. There were a lot of locals there that looked as if they were getting better service than us. Maybe touristy types are just not that important to them. The dining area was not very clean...dead flies on the window sill and some of the tables near us did not get cleared well after the customer had left. We visited on a Sunday and expected a wait, however, it was almost an hour wait while tables sat open. We had 3 people in our party so we could sit at one table together as opposed to some of the larger parties. The waitresses were also the hosts and bussing the tables so service was slow. The pancakes and waffles were ok and the breakfast burrito was good. Although there aren't many options for breakfast on the island, I don't think I would recommend going here if they are busy. read more

Food was hot but didn't have much flavor. Biggest complaint was that it was very cold in the restaurant. It's a small environment but most people had coats on. Had the chorizo skillet but don't think there was actually any chorizo in there. Hash browns are good. French toast was very strong, as if the batter had way too much vanilla extract. Good food....terrible service! We were surprised when we arrived that they were 2/3 empty - yet we were told there was a 30 minute wait. We waited outside in there outdoor seating area...where we breathed in the smoke from a patron that stood at the gate drinking his mimosa & puffing away. Once seated our food was good. Good portions. My husband and I had breakfast there the other day because of the yelp ratings. I was afraid it would be a greasy spoon because of the name but it's a lovely spot; very tastefully designed and comfortable. I had the huevos rancheros and they were, quite simply, the best. Our beautiful waitress turned out to be the owner and she was a gracious and pleasant server. I encouraged her the raise the prices of the huevos because the serving was big enough for two but she said they're trying to keep everything under $10. They may have to raise their prices after the crowds the place is likely to attract, but I'm happy she and her husband have a smashing success on their hands. read more

My girlfriend and I went here both mornings for breakfast during our weekend on Orcas and both times we left satisfied. The food was delicious and the portions weren't too big or small. The speed at which they prepared/delivered our food and the reasonable price were pleasant surprises. The relaxed ambiance and interior furnishing also were a nice touch.
