Ever since I laid eyes on Island Treat on my commute to/from work...I had to try it. The other day, a buddy and I went over for lunch. Island Treat is located at the end of a 5 store shopping strip. The front windows are plastered with calling card ads that many international/ethnic groceries would have. The interior consisted of a long counter filled with various Jamaican/Caribbean products. The woman working was very friendly and greeted us with a large smile as we walked in. The menu is on a small "bulletin board" with only a couple options. They offer Jamaican/Caribbean dishes such as jerk chicken and curry goat, as well as offering beef patties. You have the option of three different sizes, small, medium, and large. I settled for the jerk chicken and a beef patty. You also get a choice of two sides with your meal and I got rice and beans (one side) and cabbage. They also have other sides like collard greens, macaroni and cheese, etc. The whole meal came out to be less than $6 (I'm pretty sure). Back at the office, I started with the beef patty which was made well (if it was even made at the restaurant)...it was flaky and tasted great on the inside...unlike some of the ones I've had in the past. The jerk chicken was pretty good. Tasted great with the rice, beans, and cabbage. The small size take out container seems really tiny, but at the end of the meal I felt full. Verdict? Definitely a keeper. While not the best jerk chicken I've had, the service was quick and friendly and more importantly the food was delicious and a pretty cost effective lunch option. read more

Very disappointing! As a Jamaican I expected the food here to be authentic jamaican cuisine. The food is no where close to being authentic. The cook does not know how to really cook. First, The curry chicken is very dry and pale in color...curry chicken should have a nice rich yellow color. It is obvious that the cook is not adding enough curry seasoning. Next, The rice and peas are not cooked with regular grain rice..instead the cook is using Uncle Ben's rice. Also the jerk chicken is bland ..hardly taste any jerk seasoning at all. On the other hand, The only dish that I would recommend are the oxtails. The oxtails taste authentic. However, the prices of the dishes are a bit overpriced. Would not recommend this spot if you are looking for authentic Jamaican food. There are better spots close by. read more

I decide to call ahead in the interest of saving time. When I asked for the stewed chicken, the attendant informed me that they already ran out...at 6:51 pm...prime dining time... Curry chicken now becomes my choice, which I'm told will be ready in 10 minutes. I show up 13 minutes later, wait another 8 minutes to be acknowledged, then get asked to "gimme a second"... My food is ready and presented 7 minutes later... So there's an issue with 10 minutes gets mismanaged into 28. There's more of an issue when such service is becoming the norm. Stopped by for the 1st time on Tuesday (9/4). I had been looking for good Jamaican food ever since I moved into Burlington County from Middlesex. The restaurant is small and reminded me of the small spots I stopped in during my trip to Jamacia. I met a sweet lady and asked if they made Rotis, and to my surprise she said YES. Only problem I wanted goat and she only had chicken or oxtail. I tried the chicken and decided, WTH, i'll get a few patties and some rice. OMG!!!!! The roti was absolutely DEE-LICIOUS!!! and so much that I couldn't finish it. The pattie was also wonderful!! Meat seasoned perfectly w/out being spicy hot, the crust was flaky w/out being soggy... "gobbled"! Needless to say, i'll visit again and would recommend to anyone looking for real jamacian food. read more

I got the oxtails and curry goat with a side of cabbage and rice/peas and everything was great! The meat was perfectly tender and was very tasty. Even though I'm used to crispy cabbage, the more cooked cabbage was just as good. The portions were a good size as well. I would definitely recommend! read more

I was in need of some ox tails and rice and peas and they were the only place that had them and would hold my order as i visited my mother in the hospital. Well the place is nice and clean and the people who work there are super nice. Now you need to order early or wait in the long line's will not be sorry you did! They stay open late. I was pleased when i got to them after driving around late night Friday looking for oxtails only to be told that i had to be there before 7:30pm in order to some. Everywhere was sold out or closed. Not that Philly doesn't have good Jamaican spots just don't stay open. The food was good...could have been a bit more seasoned but a meal that lasted for dinner and lunch the next day! read more

The homemade tea and Jamaican patties are incredible!!!! The food has changed since I first started coming here about 7yrs ago. It's still good but the chicken I had the last time was flavored but it was like a jerk sauce just poured on the chicken rather than cooked with that seasoned crispy chicken. They kinda blew it honestly. I've always come here just for convenience. They are crazy slow and sometimes immediately don't have certain items for the day. Nobody actually knows their real hours. They push for you to call in before coming.... I called twice with no answer but they were in there. I dealt with everything because I loved their Mac and cheese. It has changed from nicely spiced and crispy dark yellow/orange Mac and cheese to the slimy, juicy light colored kind. I also don't like the new person that's always there. No thank you. read more

This was my first visit at Island Treat. I ordered the small Oxtail Platter, that came with a choice of two sides. I also tried a Beef Pattie for the first time. I received my order in minimal time. The prices were reasonable, the food was served hot and it was so good! I can't wait to go back. read more

I will not be returning to this place ever. I ordered stewed chicken, cabbage and rice and beans. The chicken was not cooked fresh, it had a burnt flavor to it like it had been simmering for a long time drying out in a slow cooker. Authentic Jamaican street food with great flavor. Traditional menu and meets expectations. The decor is shabby, but clean. The negatives included poorly trimmed and deboned meats. i received a bad explanation for not providing water with the meal and was told to buy bottled water. Since I live in Burlington it is offensive to suggest I should boil the water i drink everyday. Overall the place needs to meet American standards, but has potential for much more. read more

I've only been to one other Jamaican restaurant before this one and I am a fan of Island Treats! This makes 2 for 2 for good Jamaican food. I had their curry chicken with white rice and collard greens. The greens I thought were okay. It was a little bland for me, but everything else was excellent so it made up for it. I also got a side of their mac and cheese...probably one of the best I've ever had. It was creamy with a little spice. It's not too hot but the taste was there. I ate dinner from this restaurant one night with my family, we ordered take out. I had the curry chicken and it was excellent. My husband had the jerk chicken and also said it was great. The beef patties were amazing, not greasy and very flaky. I would eat here again anytime. read more

Jerk chicken was very spicy & I really like spicy food but it was way to hot for me. The oxtails were amazing. I ordered a medium platter of each & came it to about $20, which is not bad at all considering the amount of food they give you. I will be eating here again! (the cabbage was good as well) read more

I've been here many times, but I have only had the beef patties and the jerk chicken. They are both fantastic, so much so that I have thus far neglected all the other menu items when I get there simply because I cannot imagine walking out without a beef patty or jerk chicken. The atmosphere was exactly what you would expect and the smells were very promising. The chef could not have been nicer BUT... I found the Jerk chicken a little artificial tasting (sort of old dollars store spice rack roach killing stuff), the Ox tail was just OK. The meat patties were indeed good and hence the two stars at all. For the price I thought my take outs were a little light. I took it to the office fresh and they were all a little underwhelmed. I go to this take out often and I'm happy and full everytime! They must have updated and revamped the place a bit because I didnt see things all over the front window as the other review stated. They do have advertisements and Jamaican concert tickets and announcements to the side when you come in. The service is great! Very warm and home feeling and the food is amazing! with large portions for every size option. They have lots of different daily choices like curry chicken, curry goat, jerk chicken, oxtails, brown stewed chicken, roti, ect. They even have breakfast (salt fish, ackee, calaloo, fried dumplings ect) on Saturday's and a daily soup most of the time. The cooks are definitely real Jamaican's!! I would pay way more for this quality food! I've been to chain resturants and other carribbean food places that opened fairly recently in the area and they don't hold a candle to Island Treats! Best Jamaican food I have tasted in S. Jersey. Food has been consistently on point. I tend to stick with the curry or jerk chicken and the rice and beans and cabbage sides. They give a pretty hearty portion and aren't expensive. I would definitely recommend this place. read more
