Too chatty. My son was fully underwater and she wasn't paying attention at all. He panicked; he was 2. He LOVED going to swim until this moment. Today, now 4 years old, and he is still afraid of water. I guess she taught him that. I'm not sure what is in the metal thermos, but she was shaky, and completely almost drowned my kid. He came up blowing water out of his nose, shaking, red and screaming. He only came up because I said LOOK! He needs you!! It took 2 years for me to write this. Im still so furious. I heard she closed down and was so relieved. Guess she came back. Im writing this for other parents. Dont chat, keep all focus on your child. My daughter took lessons for years and nothing fit for her. She loses trust very easily, and struggles with things that she is not great at. We had such a great experience that we enrolled our daughter in a new series at 18 months when she was walking. Peace of mind, the most important outcome. We enrolled our 2 year old for a 7 week course with Wendy and what we experienced was a foundation for our toddler to be safe around water, a skill with immeasurable value. Over the course of those weeks, our toddler went from being timid and wreck-less around water, to floating and enjoying. We can't keep him out! Was it easy to watch? Absolutely not. The learning curve can be steep for some, while others seemed to naturally catch on more quickly. Ours was probably somewhere down the middle. He screamed every time he got in the pool at first and then something clicked and watching my tiny 2 year old floating for minutes at a time, I could feel my own fear lifting, he was 'getting it' Wendy is a professional. While it can be uncomfortable to see our babies seemingly in distress during those first weeks, my husband and I NEVER, not for one moment, thought he was unsafe. I trust her instincts as a teacher and believed in the process. Wendy makes gentle but firm corrections and everything is with the intention of teaching your child to be safe and to survive if they ever find themselves in a water emergency. Her calm and confident demeanor translates to a calm and confident child if you give it time. Even though our kiddo would cry during his floats, he was always excited to get out of the car, to play with the toys around the pool and the tears stopped immediately after he was done and back to the toys. He would talk about Wendy at the end of the day 'Wendyyyyy, kick, float, kick, float' and we realized our perception that he was miserable was quite frankly skewed. The tears are frustration of learning something new, something that is uncomfortable and against our instincts. But those tears soon turned to smiles and confidence with what he was learning. I have seen my own nieces and nephews go through summer after summer of swim classes and while they enjoy the pool, they still can't float. When my family sees our little one practicing his starfish in between jumping and playing and kicking with us they realize the immense return of what we experienced with Wendy. While you can say ISR might not be for you, it seems too intense, I encourage everyone to re-consider and couldn't recommend Wendy more. read more

I know ISR is supposed to be a serious form of learning safety and she has back to back clients, but my 19 month old did not trust her as she did not build any rapport and it caused more trauma than anything. I've been doing ISR for 4 years with my son. I started with another teacher for the first 3 years and switched to Wendy this year. It was my son's 4th year of ISR and my daughter's first year. I was a bit concerned because we loved our old teacher but she was too far from us, and last year I tried to switch my son to a closer teacher and had a horrible experience. I have to say that I LOVE Wendy. She is very professional, organized (partly thanks to Megan who is amazing) and connects with the kids. ISR classes are not for the weak hearted parent and I definitely don't think I'm too soft on my 2yo. but when an instructor is working with children, part of child development or even in adult learning is to adjust the lesson to be less aggressive if the student is not being receptive. My daughter had 2 lessons and she cried and called for me and you have to look away. That is expected and you grin and bear it because the instructor assures you this is just a phase. Well by the third lesson my daughter was not ready to learn. Wendy tried really hard to get my daughter's neck straight so she could float and my daughter fought her. She's a toddler, putting both hands on both sides of her neck to get it straight and lift her chin looked horrific as a parent as my daughter was flailing in the water. It was the longest 10 minutes of my life! My daughter swallowed water and vomited. It all comes with the territory apparently as you're trying to fight natural instinct to try and sit up. What I was not expecting to be part of the lesson was to find red pressure and friction marks from the force used to straighten my daughters neck on my daughter's body! No, not my child. I can't have that happen to her again. My daughter is strong willed and she might need more lessons but she doesn't need that kind of force. I'm sure I'll find another ISR instructor who can adjust the hard driven schedule to complete the objective without using force. read more

Teacher Wendy is an amazing teacher she has both of my daughters floating. One of the hardest things to watch but dang does she do a good job and reassures us that they will get the hang of it. Before becoming a mom, I knew I wanted to do ISR. There was no other option for me... water safety is such a huge priority because drowning IS preventable but happens way too often. I found Wendy via ISR's website because she was local to me and had great reviews. I'm not going to lie, my 2 year old son ended up crying all 6 weeks, but HE KNOWS HOW TO FLOAT AND SWIM. The relief I have to know my son can save himself if he accidentally fell in is HUGE! As Wendy said "he's crying... but if he was alone outside in the pool floating because he fell in...you want to hear him..." finally in the last week, he has turned a corner and the crying is less and the resistance to the lessons has gotten better. I am so happy I chose to do this vs traditional swim lessons. I didn't want to waste 2 summers of him "learning to swim" when he could do this in 6 weeks! My husband and I are so thankful for signing our daughter up for ISR lessons with Wendy. As other reviews have mentioned, it is difficult to watch your child cry for the short 10 min lessons, but by the time our daughter graduated the program, she was able to float unassisted for several minutes in the pool, learned how to turn herself around in the water to float on her back, and even swim a few feet to a step and pull her head out of the water to safety. Our extended family was skeptical of the process and thought it was unnecessary to put our daughter through these lessons, but the safety of my daughter comes first, and knowing that if she falls into a body of water, she will know how to save herself is so worth the time, money and struggles in the beginning of the lessons. Wendy clarifies that most children cry and are not a fan of these lessons in the beginning and you do start to see your child become more comfortable with the lessons as they progress, with less to even no crying by the end of the few weeks of lessons. More importantly, when we practice the techniques at home, there is zero crying and it has almost become fun for our daughter to practice what she has learned. You have to take into consideration that these lessons are performed in a new/strange environment with a strange person. Knowing that, it is easy to understand why your child will be more upset in the lessons as opposed to practicing at home. Overall, I would highly recommend Wendy and plan on signing our next baby up for lessons as well! read more

Wow! Just wow! What started out with a tough week one, just because it was a little hard to hear my little one crying, but I knew to push through because safety and survival has always been my priority for my little one. By week two the crying had changed to a meek whine and the progress was incredible, my 14 mo. Old was floating on her own. The final 4 weeks went by so quickly because the skills my daughter was learning we're truly mind blowing for such a young toddler. Wendy was patient, playful when needed, always maintained an open dialogue with me to keep me informed about what she was teaching my little one and why. My child has never been in floaties, can now float independently, and she's even swimming! We will continue our ISR journey with Wendy for years to come.
