I switched here after several years of not feeling great about the eye doctor that I was going to. Overall I feel like their staff are friendly and the service is good. I don't buy my contacts there because they're almost double the price of what I can buy them for at Costco. They will give you a printed prescription if you ask. My insurance now covers the $35 for the imaging of the back of my eye but even before it was covered it was well worth the $35 to not have half a day where I cannot see because I had my pupils dilated. I'm taking off a star because of a couple issues. I brought my glasses in to have the prescription read last year and it was never entered into my chart I was then told I would need to make an appointment to bring them in for a second time to have them read. It's really inconvenient to have to take off time from work for a mistake they made as they're not open on Saturdays. The second issue being that the eye doctor seemed really annoyed with me that I haven't gotten the new glasses she wants me to get. I have had the same glasses for about 10 years and don't feel I am having issues with seeing out of them--in fact I still wear them instead of my contacts if I am doing up close work like embroidery. When I asked if the new prescription was much different than the glasses I already have they were unable to tell me since they read and then didn't enter the prescription. They asked if I brought my glasses with me--why would I when I brought them last year? They also seemed annoyed that I am not wearing readers when I use the computer which I explained was because they give me a headache. I was told to use a lower power, which would only be available somewhere online, and should hold the lens up to light to see if they look distorted--hard to do when buying online. I decided not to explain that I had tried a couple different strengths and found they all gave me a headache. Just didn't sit super well with me to feel like I'm trying to explain I'm seeing well and I'm being told I just need to buy the new glasses and I have to wear readers. My parents had a similar feeling about their eye visits with the same eye doctor. I'll give them another shot but after that I'll ask to see someone else. read more

I just visited Isthmus Eye Care as a new patient and had a really lovely experience with the staff. They were super knowledgeable and answered all my questions. Dr. Garcia was very professional and even told me some interesting facts about eyes when I asked questions about my eye scans! I appreciated the knowledge he gave me and I can't wait to pull these fun facts out and impress my friends. The facility is clean and modern and there are lots of great brands to choose from when ordering glasses or contacts. They even helped me to book ahead so I don't have to worry about scheduling next year. I'm horrible at scheduling appointments so I appreciated this a lot. I've been to many optometrists over decades and none have been as professional and caring as Dr. Maursetter and the East side team.

I've been coming here since I was a kid and have never had any issues until the last two years. The doctor I see is great, but I am getting tired of the up charges for things like the $35 for the photo instead of dilating my eyes, which insurance would cover. I wouldn't buy glasses here! They say they have a two year warranty and now they are claiming they can't get the frame in that I have, that I only bought 6 months ago. They told me I could try a different color in the same type of frame however if they ordered them and I did not like I would have to pay to ship them back. Other option was to get a different frame up to the same value as what I paid and if it was more I have to pay the difference. Didn't like any of the other frames 6 months ago why would they be different. Definitely would have gone to a different store that sold cheaper glasses knowing that they wouldn't have these same ones. Such a joke! read more

Last year being new to the area we were looking for an eye doctor. After not getting any strong recommendations from friends we did our research and saw very good reviews on Yelp. We both went right before Covid. My wife was first and gave me the thumbs up so when I arrived for my appointment a few weeks later I was not surprised by one of the most thorough eye exams I have ever had. The staff was very friendly and professional. One knock is that they performed one particular test that was not covered by insurance and they didn't really explain that possibility. It felt like something they should have discussed with me - an optional service they just performed without actually doing the sales job. But overall I was satisfied. Where they really excelled was in follow-up. I bought my new glasses elsewhere since they did not have a style I liked. When I was having trouble a couple of months later and was trying to decide if it was the prescription or a glass manufacturing problem I made an appointment and they did a great job of trying to sort out the issue (almost another full exam). In the end they made some adjustments to how the glasses sat on my face which helped quite a bit. (This was during Covid and their safety processes were very comforting.) Finally I went one more time in late summer when I was looking to get a screw to repair some sunglasses and the manufacturer said they were a dealer. They helpfully ordered the parts for me at no charge and would have made the repair for a modest fee since I did not buy the glasses there but I opted to do the repair myself. Overall very good service - we now have a trusted source for eye care in Madison. read more

This is the worst eye exam place I've ever been in my life! Specifically Jonathan Garcia , OD. He was very demeaning when he spoke to me (he made me feel like I should understand all the medical lingo he was speaking and when I asked him if he could repeat it in a way I could understand, he seemed very put out). He never once smiled & worst of all, wrote me the worst prescription EVER for my eyeglasses. I had my glasses made at Warby Parker and when they came back, I felt like I was blind in my left eye. Jonathan Garcia -- Doctor????? I personally say, "go back to school dude, and while you're at it, go to classes that teach kindness and friendliness". I ended up going to the Warby Parker on State St and paying out of pocket for a new eye exam and the wonderful, friendly OD there couldn't understand why Jonathan Garcia wrote my prescription the way he did --- way too strong in my left eye. Now with the new prescription and my new glasses I can finally see! I will NEVER set foot in Isthmus Eye Care ever again! And the price of their frames is outrageous! I have been going to Isthmus eyecare for many years and have always been happy with the service, with the exception of the sales pressuring for glasses. Dr. Maursetter is great to work with. At the end of the appointment, I was ready for the coming pressure for eye glass sales. I met with Brooke, who was great! I stated that I did not want to buy glasses at Isthmus and just wanted to get my pupillary distance taken. Brooke was kind, courteous and professional during my visit. I love the clinical side of Isthmus, but I just wish that their sales push after the visit could be toned down. This sell at all cost type culture will not be kind to their long term practice. I contacted Isthmus Eye Care sort of last minute because they accept BadgerCare Plus (Medicaid in WI), so long as an individual hasn't selected an HMO. None of that may apply to the person reading this, but for me, it was huge. I had about two weeks before my HMO selection kicked in, and after that, I had about 10 days before I moved away from Madison, so the fact that Isthmus Eye Care could make an appointment for me, provide an eye exam and a contact prescription, and make the contact order for me without delaying any part of the process made all the difference. Beyond that particular set of circumstances, the doctors, assistants, and staff were all polite, helpful, and informative. I have pretty bad eyes, so optometry visits have been a fact of life since I was young, and I'm very glad that I ran across Isthmus Eye Care in a time of need. read more

Quite possibly the best optometrist I have ever been to, and I have been seeing optometrists for almost 20 years. Everyone here is SUPER nice. They make a point of cleaning all of the equipment you are going to be touching right in front of you. And (my favorite part) they don't do the puff test! They have this little contraption that touches your eye (I thought it would freak me out, but it was fine.) - WAY less stress than the damn puff test. I will definitely be going here from now on for eye exams. read more

My husband and I came in for our yearly exam with Dr. O'Connor on May 10, 2022 at Isthmus Eye Care in Middleton, WI. We were each charged $39 for Photography of the Retina (Billing Code 92250). We told the billing person at the office that we contacted our insurance, UHC, and was told everything would be fully covered. She told us it was not, and that she was 100% sure on this, and that we had to pay the full amount at that time. We then contacted UHC with our itemized bill and was told that this was a covered item. Our insurance person with UHC, Terese, contacted Amy, Isthmus Billing, with us on the line on May 12. UHC asked why Isthmus did not even submit the claim to them. Amy told UHC that it wasn't covered, which UHC told her it was, and that the claim should have been submitted to them. Amy, Isthmus, was very rude and snippy to us on the phone, which Terese, UHC, even commented on to us. I later called Dr. O'Connor that day to voice my frustration with Isthmus not even submitting the claim to my insurance, and on the billing coordinator's rudeness to us. He was nice, but stated he agreed with their policy of not billing insurance companies for services that are not covered by them. Both Amy and the doctor were wrong on this. UHC did cover this $39 claim, paying the Medicare allowed amount of $17.05 for each of us. On June 3, Isthmus credited us the $78 that they erroneously charged us for this service. Patients shouldn't have to go through this. I can't help but to wonder how many other Isthmus patients have been required to pay for this service when their insurance would have paid for it had the claim been actually submitted by Isthmus. We are very disappointed in Isthmus Eye Care - Middleton. read more

The opticians and optometrists at Isthmus Eye Care are so friendly and helpful. I recently had an eye exam and contact fitting here, and it was a great experience. Not a huge fan of having my pupils dilated, but they put some drops in afterward which was supposed to help the dilation go away faster. Dr. Maursetter was very nice and explained the purpose of all the tests she was running. It's always helpful when a professional is explaining what they are doing instead of just doing something and leaving you wondering why they are doing it. She gave me some daily contacts to try since I had complained of dryness with the two week contacts. After wearing those for a week, I decided I did not like them so they gave me a different brand to try on. They are very accommodating of your needs, and ordering contacts from them is quick and easy. read more

I went here because they take VSP. Exam was reasonable after all discounts etc, ~$40. The high pressure sales tactic was pretty unnerving especially since I said from the get-go that I was just getting a script to take else where. During my visit they forgot to give me 10 days of sample contacts, and refused to print off my script for me because I could (so conveniently) use the online portal and get it that way. Likewise the brand they're written for (which I only discovered after I had gotten home to my computer..) is not the brand I've always used and now I have to go back in and get a refitting because I was plugged into the sales flow of the company who has bought their practice. I was really hoping I wouldn't have to deal with 1) difficult dogmatic staff who treats you like an animal because you're not going to buy their overpriced glasses/contacts 2) some stupid liability law that they must abide by whose only result is me coughing up another $40 3) having to appear there in person a second time and 4) being blamed personally for everything. When I called to schedule my refitting I was told that I didn't tell them the brand that I had been using (I did), and that I WAS given my 10 day supply of contacts and it's because my own negligence that they were "left on the table" - I was only ever given a pair to try on and that was it. So, not the best experience, however I do understand that this is partially reflective of the new optical economy that hates lower cost options and the scourge of an informed consumer. I recently moved to Madison and chose this optometrist office based on Yelp reviews. I'll start by saying the doctor and technician were very strong. I felt like I had a solid eye exam. My poor review is based on the cost practices of this office. I've worn the same brand and strength of contacts for several years. In this exam, they confirmed that prescription was still the right one. They did not fit me with new contacts. They charged me $42 on top of the $139 exam fee for a "contact fitting". When I objected because they had not done a contact fitting, I was informed its a required charge whether I get a fitting or not. I've gone to several other optometrists and never been charged a fitting when there was NO fitting. I complained and asked the person I was dealing with to talk with her manager about this, and indicated I would not be returning to their office due to this. After 24 hours, I have heard nothing so decided to share this via yelp. So $181 for a visit compared to my former optometrist who charge $89 for the same. Be smarter than me! The staff is very kind and helpful. The doctors were phenomenal as well. However, they are a lot more expensive than other places and they seem to really push buying their products. Those last two reasons are the only things that have me considering going somewhere else for my next exam. I hate feeling like they are always going to try to sell me something when I go in or that there will be an additional cost for something. When I first made my appointment I thought I would leave with my contact prescription after paying for the exam but I didn't. They made me come back to pay another $25 dollars for the contact fitting after I already paid $90 for my initial exam. I have good insurance and thought this was really pricey compared to other places. Overall, if you want good customer service and don't mind paying more for it then this is your place. read more
