How do they not know how to cook pasta? I have tried 4~5 times and every single time the pasta is mushy and gummy. Today we ordered spaghetti and mostaccioli. We ate it right away and couldn't believe how mushy the noodles were in both dishes. I keep trying, thinking that it will be better but it's not. Surprised the reviews are not more glowing!! For $9 you get an 8 inch sub that is super wide! We ordered the turkey sandwhich and asked for it to be toasted. This was accommodated. They even put the lettuce on the side so it wasn't soggy. The sweet bread is incredible and really makes the sandwhich. The portion was plenty for 2 people to be full on. Came here on a drive from Chicago to Madison. The sandwiches are huge. I ordered a half and got a footling sandwich. Chicken parm on garlic bread - bread is super soft, kind of sweet with a hint of garlic. Chicken is nice and juicy, cheese is rich, but there could have been a little bit more red sauce Overall, really delicious sandwiches and the bread definitely steals the show. I always have to try the spaghetti at Italian place I go because it's the only thing I know about... so first off I noticed that there was an option to get spaghetti by itself for $5. I've never had spaghetti anywhere else that was so filling. It was pretty good, not fancy at all. It was good and it was filling. I was stuffed after eating it. An excellent example of a local business worth every bit of our local support. I love Italian food and we live nearby. We got garlic bread appetizer that was terrible. The bread itself was sweet and no amount of garlic could cover that. My "chicken parmesan" was chunks of non-breaded chicken mixed in blah spaghetti sauce and served over noodles. Janesville badly needs a non-chain Italian restaurant that is more than a pizza joint. Unfortunately this is the only city option. Really lousy service. Ordered one bucket of takeout ravioli which should take about 30 seconds to fill. After waiting for over 10 minutes I asked what the problem was and the cashier said "oh, here it is", obviously having been sitting there awhile. The 7-8 employees couldn't handle the onslaught of 5 customer tables and a carry out window all at the same time. Really lame. Spaghetti sauce is a overly sweet but is probably why it's popular. I placed an order for a lasgna dinner, loaf of garlic bread and a loaf of cheese bread. Both the garlic and cheese bread were soggy. The cheese bread had barely any cheese and the garlic bread was burned. I threw it out. The salad had a packet of dressing on top of it insidevthe container, thereby potentially contaminating the contents due to Covid 19. I threw it out. I havent eaten the lasgna yet. How bad could it be after it's reheated? Time will tell. This is my third experience with something wrong with my meal. The other 2 times occurred dining in the restaurant where my food was cold, as in it was taken out of the refrigerator or freezer and microwaved. My fair guess is that out of the $27 I paid (hoping for at least 6 meals out of it) I threw out $20 worth of food and at best will get 2 meals. Of course this isn't going to be some magical authentic Italian food - you're in the middle of the middle. And sure, I might be giving a nostalgia star but still, I think it's delicious and I try to go for lunch the once a year that I find myself in Janesville. I think the sandwiches are good, and I normally pay the extra buck and get it on garlic bread. Yes, the bread is on the sweet side but it's deliberate, and when you get the bread as garlic bread, it's great against the sweetness. I usually go for the chicken parm sandwich, and I enjoy it. It's also big enough that I get two meals out of it, so bonus. I've been to Italy numerous time and I can't say I've ever had anything in Janesville that's at all authentic - but that doesn't mean it's not a good meal here anyway. read more

We first visited and got some Gondola sandwiches, making an assumption it was a "Italian sub". Sure it has a few of the cold cuts, but that is it. I mean who puts American Cheese on a Italian sub? My husband convinced this was a good place, tried again by ordering lasagna a few weeks later. He didn't like it for the lack of layered flavors. I don't understand the appeal of this place. This place is in my top 3 worst places I've ever eaten. With 13 years of restaurant work and living in multiple states, that is a huge statement. Giving it one star is more than I believe this place deserves. The garlic bread came out and was barely toasted. It tasted more like bread with butter and hint of garlic. For our meal, I ordered some lasagna and my girlfriend got a pasta with pork that had 1/2 alfredo and 1/2 marinara. My lasagna tasted like a tin can and I found myself barely able to eat it. My girlfriend's meal looked great, and the pork actually was. But her marinara was the same tinny variety that I was biting on. And the alfredo was atrocious. Now I'm big on eating what you get and I'm usually the guy that finished off other people's food. I couldn't even do that here. I tried my girlfriend's food and nearly vomited. We left, food not even half gone. When we were asked how our food was, we told the server that it was barely edible. To my surprise, her exact response was "That's good." I can only imagine that they're in business for things other than their pasta, like maybe the flow of customers from the high school that is a block away. The Italian House is a fun place to eat for something casual and quick. It's not fast food, but it's definitely not sit-down fine dining. The price range at Italian House is very inexpensive - they even give you cans of pop instead of using a fountain drink machine. Mostly the high school kids work there, food arrives quickly, and they do not serve alcohol. It's sort of like a Fazoli's, but it is not a chain to my knowledge. Try the garlic bread; the bread is actually very sweet in flavor. I love it! Whenever I think of Italian House, I think of that bread. The other food items on the menu are fine; nothing terrible and nothing outta-this-world delicious. It's a good choice for a simple, quick, cheap bite to eat. read more

But when I come back to Janesville, I always have to stop by to grab the famous gondola.. PLEASE PLEASE come to lower east side Milwaukee! They have no good sandwich places up here.. I visited Italian House a few years ago while on a trip to Janesville and enjoyed the pasta, but after seeing the simply amazing chicken parm sandwich on garlic bread that my wife had, I regretted not ordering a sandwich because they looked (and tasted) amazing. So this time around, I ordered a half deluxe gondola - and boy was that good. For starters, I've no idea how you could ever eat a whole one - they're huge and packed solid with delciousness. I mean seriously, I'm a big guy who eats footlong subs from Subway all the time but I struggled to finish off my half, despite really wanting to! The other thing to note about Italian House is the friendliness of the staff there, who are simply great - and the simply stunning smell as you walk in. If they bottled that, I'd buy it too. We love this place. It has been one of our families favorites for 25 years. We consider Edmund the owner a close friend of ours. He has made this small family local resturant into a must stop. This place is one of the only true staples in Janesville when it comes to food. I always start out with a classic house salad. Then an order of garlic cheese bread with a side of spaghetti sauce for dipping. Then on to the main course. For myself it has to be a classic gondola. My wife like the cheese tortellini or the lasagna. My son's favorite is the chicken alfredo. The bread has a nice sweet touch to it. We love this resturant. We like the cleanliness of the place. We like how the staff is friendly and at tentative. They are usually always busy but food comes out fast and fresh. We no longer live in the area but we always will stop here first before going anywhere else in town. It's that good. Easy to get to right off highway I-90. I tried the Gray's Honey Ale, Gray's Busted Knuckle both beer's were pretty amazing I found the Honey a little on the sweeter side and the knuckle a little on the tart side, however both we're equally good. Upon mixing them together they created a perfect meld the tart with the sweet added more flavor. I order the spaghetti with meat which was very reasonably priced at $5.00 or so for there lunch special. Spaghetti was done to perfection meat sauce could of had a little more meat put it was still delicious I couldn't even finishing eating all my food. I don't understand why this place is included in the 'best of' Janesville list! I have tried their food 3 times over the course of 5 years, the most recent time being last weekend, and every time I feel unimpressed. Their sandwiches are very large but no better than Subway. Their other dishes/entrees are on par with (maybe even lower than) Olive Garden. Their "famous" bread is dense and sweet and NOT Italian (OG's breadsticks aren't very Italian either but I'd prefer one of those any day). Don't be fooled by the Chicken Parm sandwich listed on their menu- it comes with chunks/nubs of grilled-type chicken. Survey any food-eating person and they will tell you Chicken Parm = larger pieces of BREADED chicken breast!!! The fact that they sell pasta by-the-bucket should say it all. Sure, that may be fine for feeding a high school football team but what about the rest of us! The ONLY reason I am giving 2 stars vs 1 star is that their prices are good. That's it. read more

Made planning a breeze as he is very thorough and has obviously lots of experience doing this. Made it very comfortable and reassuring everything was taken care of and it absolutely was! The Italian House is a Janesville institution. I used to eat here everyday when I was in high school. Now I am a grownup and have fond memories that many of the great moments I have spent in the Italian House not being oppressed by the learn or the textbook. I wish I could tell you I remember the M-F menu we used to have because that was a ritual. I remember the best day was pizza. But I digress. I remember talking to Edmund - why cant we get my favorite soda, coca cola with cherry flavor. He explained to me in terms that I could not relate to as a knucklehead kid but now as a adult makes perfect sense. Anyways in 2017, all the restuarants let you add the flavors of whatever syrup you want. But I digress again. Let me tell you why Italian House is a thriving business. For generations people have eaten here and continue to eat here. I have known Edmund from early in his business coming to Janesville until today he is a captain of industry. The food is delicious. The food is a great value. The food satisfies. Craig High School students had never tired, they would wait their turn to place their order and hopefully find a seat. But today the hs campus policy is now closed, and still the customers fill up his restaurant and new exclusive party room for group events. This business is a part of Janesville peoples lives. And a big part is that friendly owner who has been so good to so many people. A popular choice to have catered to large group events! OK about the Italian fare. You will know the restaurant by the Gondola. A submarine sandwich you can eat as many segments as you want until you are full. How about that home-made bread. The distinct flavor, the fresh texture, the natural composition, hello perfection. Take it how you want, right out of the oven, with garlic, or with cheesy garlic. Finally the house sauce, the sweet tomato taste with ground beef base - the signature with all of the dishes. My favorite is the meatball. Any entree I order, I will always get this on the side. I'd liked to start my review by stating that from the outside the place looked like I would find a cockroach in my food, nothing special. The decor on the inside wasn't bad, neither was they're selection of music but the atmosphere as awful. I felt hated as soon as I walked in the door, I felt like nobody wanted me there. There was no host/hostess to seat me. Me and my a date eventually found out we should just seat ourselves. Finally after 20 minutes our waitress took our order, ordered a water and a toasted mobster sandwich my date ordered the lasagna and a water, we also order a side of bruschetta. A large group of unruly teenagers were sat next to me, so by this point in the night I am thoroughly annoyed. Our food arrived after about 40 minutes we never received our bruschetta. The mobster was absolutely awful, so disgusting and greasy would not recommend. My date liked her lasagna though.
