Our driver, Antonello, was absolutely amazing and I highly recommend him if you are thinking about this type of tour. He was so personable, had a lot of great knowledge to share, and fit in all the sights we wanted to see in the 5-hour tour. He knew the places to get out and take pictures and he made the experience in Rome a great one! Julia was our private tour guide at the Vatican. She was absolutely wonderful. She was so animated and shared with us the rooms and pieces she felt were the most important to see with only one day to explore the Vatican. We had such a wonderful time with her. She is one tour guide I will not forget! If you want an above-and-beyond experience at the Vatican, book with Easitalytours and request Julia. You will not be disappointed! This is the best Tour company out there. They are reasonably priced and the tour guides are absolutely top-notch!

Walking through the structure and surrounding grounds, I found myself imagining what it must have been like nearly 2,000 years ago. Thousands of spectators filling the stands, roaring crowds, and gladiators stepping into the arena knowing they were the main event. What fascinated me most was learning that the arena was even flooded for certain spectacles. It's incredible to think about the level of ambition and ingenuity involved in creating entertainment on that scale so long ago. I also enjoyed spending time exploring the areas around the Colosseum, which are beautiful in their own right and filled with layers of history. This isn't a place to rush through. Give yourself several hours, take your time, and let your imagination do some of the work. A must-see when visiting Rome and one of the most memorable historical sites I've ever experienced.

The scale, the power, the history, everything about it is absolutely breathtaking. You can feel the history the moment you step inside. Knowing what happened there centuries ago gives you literal shivers. It's emotional, intense, and awe-inspiring all at once. Every stone tells a story, and it makes you feel so small in the best way possible. This is not just a landmark, it's an experience that stays with you forever. If you come to Rome and don't see the Colosseum, you missed everything. Rating: 10/10 -- unforgettable, unreal, legendary

My mother-in-law is elderly and getting around with her took more time than expected. Still, we arrived at the staging area and the staff was still very pleasant and accommodating. You can tell they were getting us to hurry because they know the area would be overrun with other tour groups. They really wanted us to have the best time and experience there. And they sat us in a very good spot for the Wednesday audience with the Pope. I would definitely recommend this company.

He is definitely highly recommended. He is an archaeologist as well so he had a lot of fascinating things to share with us. We actually ran into him on three separate occasions in Rome by chance and he was great to talk to each time. The Colosseum tour we took also included the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill (both even more fascinating than the Colosseum in my opinion). The Vatican tour was with Claudia and she was equally as knowledgeable and fun! She obviously knew the folks she needed to to get around in this massive complex without having to wait for anything. The "no-line" entry most tours get has lines here. She had the hookup to get us even past those lines. The tour starts through the Vatican Museum and it was very crowded at the time we were there. She fought to make room for us to get in front of the masses to get a close look at all the things she wanted us to see. It was great to see her genuinely care about our experience. Just about every other tour group we saw in this places had at least 30 people in them. Both tours we took with Real Rome Tours had less than 10. We all had an equal opportunity to experience these beautiful sights with great knowledgable folks who even stuck around to answer any questions we had. They also give great recommendations on restaurants and other places you need to see while in Rome. Gerard was also a pleasure dealing with while booking our tours. He is well organized and gave us a great alternative when we wanted to do the Colosseum Underground tour that wasn't available. It worked out perfectly for us. I couldn't recommend Real Rome Tours any more.

As you walk through its entrances...once part of a system of numbered archways that guided tens of thousands of spectators. You begin to imagine the roar of a crowd that could once reach up to 50,000 or more, gathered to witness activities ranging from gladiatorial combat to elaborate public performances. Inside, the Colosseum reveals both grandeur and ruin. The arena floor, now partially exposed, uncovers the hypogeum...the intricate network of underground chambers where gladiators and animals once waited before entering the arena. Standing there, it's impossible not to feel a mix of awe and unease. This was a place of entertainment, but also of extensive human struggle and suffering, where thousands of lives were lost for sport centuries of use. Architecturally, the Colosseum is spectacular...Its elliptical design, rising multiple stories high and constructed from stone, concrete, and brick, speaks volumes about Roman engineering excellence. Even in its weathered state...damaged by earthquakes and centuries of reuse...it still remains one of the most l impressive structures ever created. Yet, what makes the Colosseum truly unforgettable is not just its size or history...it's the emotional experience it evokes. As sunlight filters through broken arches and shadows stretch across ancient stone, the monument feels alive with memories. You can almost hear the distant clash of swords, the crowd's anticipation, and the commanding presence of emperors who once presided over these events. Today, the Colosseum stands as a powerful symbol of ingenuity, resilience, and the complexity of human history. It is both an enigma, a place where beauty and brutality coexisted. Its enduring presence continues to captivate millions of visitors each year, reminding us how deeply the past is woven into our present.

I originally planned to just see the outside, but with some extra time, I decided if fate allows,, to schedule some time inside. Unfortunately, if you're trying to book directly through the official site, tickets are typically sold out in advance. However, you might get lucky with booking through a third-party like Viator. Yes, it's more expensive and usually includes a guide and timed entry, but it's worth it. Even though the Colosseum is only about two-thirds original, it's incredible to think about the history that lives here. I wish they had more visual guides or reconstructions to help you picture what it once looked like--it would make the experience feel more real. NOTE: Make sure to have your ID or passport with you, as they do check upon entry. I'm not sure how the standard ticketing process compares, but since I booked a guided tour, we were able to skip the line without any issues, which made a big difference.

However the Ecotours employee quickly reassured us that things are generally fine and gave us a clear outline of where to go and what to do, there is a really handy map with explanations of what you see on the way, with explanations of costs and times written on. You can do a manual bike (we did for the exercise, just 6 gears, but it was enough to get by), some steep hills for exercise (sore after!) or an electrically powered bike (maybe should have done this in retrospect! The bikes worked well, the roads were VERY bumpy and slightly perilous at times but there were a lot of people out and the cars were careful of us. Such a great way to see the road, I recommend checking them out, cheap with max price 15 Euros for the day, helmets and locks provided.

First, cycling the Appian Way is a wonderful way to spend a morning or afternoon, and I recommend…read moreit to visitors who have time for more than the historic sites in the center of Rome. The Appian Way's biking terrain changes from cobblestone to dirt path to the original Roman stones -- all hard on your bike and you, but the positive is you have to go fairly slow through the 8km/5mi route and thus can see the villas, the ruins, and the open spaces that line the route. We went in winter when there were no crowds, but some cyclists, joggers, walkers, and local car traffic -- it was quite relaxed but may be a zoo in summer like all of Rome. Our rental experience was mixed, We got two, um, well used city bikes (not as heavy as mountain bikes:, and complimentary helmets in our rental -- a bargain at €19 total thanks to a weekday discount. One bike's derailleur was not shifting well, but it seemed to loosen up after a kilometer, so we kept going. Well, that derailleur fell off completely three times, requiring on-the-road fixes by hand because the first two occurred when the rental office was closed for lunch (this is Italy, after all). We were able to remount the derailleur and rethread the chain. But on the third time, the derailleur lost its tension and we could not keep the chain mounted; the derailleur seemed to have been torqued one time too many from falling off. The other bike's derailleur stayed on, but the chain came off after one bump. There are lots of bumps on the Via Appia, and I suspect a city bike, especially a poorly maintained one as these were, is the wrong vehicle for this road. When I called the agency, the woman was unable to help because she was the only person working that day and could not leave it to get us. She called a supervisor but could get no help. A weekday in winter means short-staffing and no contingency for travelers in trouble. Worse, she wanted to know where we were initially, but there aren't clear addresses or ruins names once you're a few kilometers out, so then she asked us to Whatsapp our location. I don't use Whatsapp, so we couldn't tell her where we were (though we knew we were 5km-6km out, which should have been enough for rescue on such an isolated road). When it was clear that she had no way to get us help, we just told her we would walk the bikes back. And so we walked the 5km back. It is a pleasant walk, fortunately. We were refunded our rental cost, and the woman was clearly embarrassed by the situation. She was stuck, too, so we don't blame her. But Ecobike clearly has cut too many corners: poor maintenance, clearly no equipment check, and no plan for when a renter has trouble. I've long been a cyclist, so on-the-road chain and derailleur fixes are not new to me, but the average renter likely has never done more than rethread a chain that came off from a sharp bump on an unretensioned bike. And my bike's derailleur was well past what you can fix with only your hands on a country road. So, I love the idea of cycling the Appian Way, and it was still a nice day despite the mishap. But Ecobike really fell down on the job. It's the only option. So, caveat emptor. And don't bike any further than you can walk back. Tip: the little bake shop next to the bike rental makes really good coffee (not from pods) and homemade pastries. End your ride there.
