How am I so late to discovering Ivy and Coney I'll never know! I wound up going to check out a Lions game with my friends from Detroit only to discover it's also a Chicago sports bar! As a HUGE Bears fan, this was truly a treat for me and I appreciated everything from the decor to the menu. Chicago dogs? Italian beef? MY HEART! This is the perfect dive bar to catch a game and I absolutely love the environment. As a Chicago(land) native, Ivy and Coney hits home in all the right ways. This is absolutely my favorite dive bar in all of DC. I may be slightly bias as a Michigan native and former Chicagoan, but this hole in the wall place exudes fun with its great eats perfectly nestled in the Shaw neighborhood. With Bell's brewery on tap and a menu of Detroit and Chicago inspired eats, it definitely makes it challenging to pick from the small but amazing menu selection. I typically will order a Bell's or Two Hearted along with a Detroit style pizza. The portions are huge often leaving me with leftovers for a few days. The cheese curds are also top notch. We went here last night since it is a known Chicago Cubs bar and one of our friends visiting is a Cubs fan. We waited outside in line for about 20 minutes or so, because the bar was at capacity. They had limited drink options, mostly only beers. The prices are very reasonable. We only had drinks here so I can't comment on whether the food is good or not. read more

What used to be a staple, Ivy & Coney unfortunately is what America is becoming when Drump came for his 2nd administration (not great). While I did decide to come the night of the USA v Canada hockey game and the bar was busy, I did not expect what would happen next. Part of my group had already gone in and when I and 3 others arrived, the bouncer said they were at full capacity so we kindly waited in front of the door, in the bouncer's line of vision. We saw 2 individuals pass us and walk in and we expected they'd be sent out because they were 'at full capacity' except she checked their ID and let them up. Odd, we thought. We then saw a group of 4 leave and we thought great, let's go in. She denied us and said she can only let 3 of us in (there were 4 of us waiting). She said it's our fault for letting the 2 guys in ahead of us. We were pretty flabbergasted at her stupidity and stubbornness. Ivy and Coney used to be a great spot but I'll gladly spend my money on the number of other bars nearby. I'd give it 1 star for the experience but bumping it to 2 for all the great memories of the past. read more

We stopped by Ivy & Coney for a Hanukkah pop up event. I'll admit that I was a bit confused, but I guess it was a Hanukkah and SEC Championship popup event. . Overall, I enjoyed myself at this delightful dive bar. The space is a bit small, but there are two separate bars inside. One cool thing: you don't have to open two separate tabs because one tab works for both bars. Actually, I'm not sure if the bar typically is super packed on Saturdays or if this was due to college football. The Black female bartender with locks was absolutely amazing. While they have a nice selection of canned beers, I only saw two draft beers in the front bar. The owner is a tyrant, and the food is objectively bad. We went to watch Commanders v. Lions game. This is a Lions bar. The Lions were losing and the owner just decided he no longer wanted Commanders fans in the bar and kicked us out. Totally obnoxious. Also we were served a cold hot dog. Ivy & Coney is a great dive bar on 7th St NW near Dacha and The Passenger, among other bars. Pretty cheap beer, but not necessarily anything to write home about. Service is usually pretty nice and quick. It can get pretty packed on weekends, but with three different rooms you can usually find a good spot to sit or stand. Definitely a great spot to stop if you are bar hopping in the area. read more

In town for a convention and order the hamburger. Pretty good smash burger. I was in the back bar last night when I watched a customer get kicked out for saying hello to a girl sitting at the bar. I watched the entire thing. He order one beer said hello to a girl at the bar, she in turn told the bartender that he made her uncomfortable. Then the bartender immediately asked the man to leave.. crazy- he believed the crazy girl... plus the bartender was a total jerk about it. If I hadn't seen the guy come in, order the beer, say hello, then get thrown out I would have not even considered giving review about the crappy service. Next time I'm in DC I'll will be sure to steer clear of this place! I've put the word out to the management group heading to DC next week... or, at the very least don't say hello to anyone! Solid, no frills bar that has a roofless section that kills it when the weather is nice. Drinks are reasonable for the DC area. Make sure to check their daily specials. Plus, they might also have off-menu items so no need to be shy. Had their pizza for the first time the other day (Detroit Style) and is easily some of the best in the area. Although my pie had a little less sauce than another customer's, I didn't fret. The dough had been cooked to perfection, emanating a golden-brown hue only lightened by the cheese above it. Furthermore, Ivy & Coney's is larger than most here locally, too, so naturally, +1. Now that I've been turned on to their non-drink menu, I've found even more reasons to stop by. This place is not easy to find as it's hidden behind a bar on the second floor, but it's a cute oasis for Chicagoans and those from Detroit. The decor of the bar is quite cute. It definitely carries every single flag of the Chicago and Detroit area teams (all but the White Sox in true Chicagoland spirit) and captures the essence of what it would be if Chicago is your home team. As for the food? The hot dog, I'd give it a 3.5 or 4. The chili dog is quite good at a solid 4. But the Italian beef I would unfortunately give it a 3. Not wet enough but not really even dry enough, something is off about this sandwich. With that, I would rate this place a 4. Excellent DC dive bar. Located in the second level of the building so I'd you stand on the sidewalk it doesn't look like there is a bar in the building until you look up and see the Old Style sign. They have cheap drinks for DC and shot and a beer specials if you want to really get the job done. Old Style and a shot for $6 or a local canned beer and shot for $8. They also serve really good looking Detroit Style pizzas. Sad we did not partake as we were in our way to dinner elsewhere. Next time, we will be back. read more

What a terrific dive bar and sports bar combo. I think? Honestly I was confused by the theme and the sports part doesn't do much for me. But, we had a blast. This is overall a great sports bar to hang out at and get relatively cheap drinks in the DC area! It's pretty obscure and unassuming in the front, but it has a really nice open air balcony with plenty of tvs and a bar. I had a few beers and tried their curds which were incredible. The bar is a Michigan/Illinois bar, so there's lots of allegiance to teams from that area. They also sell Detroit Pizza and burgers so pretty standard bar food. Next time I have people in town visiting from the midwest, this is the first place I'll take them. read more

Great Chicago-homage dive bar in Shaw. It might be easy to miss if not for the glorious Old Style sign out front as a shibboleth for Chicagoans. It's got a great lowkey dive/sports bar vibe, with plenty of tasteful nods to the city of Chicago. One of which, of course, is Malort, Chicago's finest liquor. Do yourself a favor and order a Chicago handshake - an Old Style + a shot of Malort. They also have an amazing Detroit style pizza, which has those nice curved pepperoni pieces and a really fantastic crunchy crust. They also have other Chicago specialty foods as well (Italian beef, Chicago hot dog) which I'll definitely be back to try. If this place were to host a hot dog eating contest, I would show up in my finest stretchy pants ready to throw down. I can not speak to the authenticity of Coney dogs or the Chicago dogs, but I can say they are good and I had to restrain myself from ordering two of each. This is simply just the most perfect bar to hang out, watch a game, throw some peanut shells on the floor after snacking, and stuff your face with hot dogs and beer. It's as simple as that. The beer menu is limited, basically you got Strongbow (bottle), Bell's Two Hearted (draft), 312 (draft), Old Style (draft) and Strohs (can). They will set you back about $4-$6. You have the choice between two hot dogs, the Coney or the Chicago. I also heard a guy requesting a veggie dog, so apparently they may have that available in Chicago Style. The coney dog was beef hot dog, topped with an all-meat beanless chili, chopped white onions, with two stripes of yellow mustard. The chicago dog had yellow mustard, onions, sweet pickle relish, tomato, sport peppers; and celery salt. I loved the Chicago style dog (I lived in Chicago for a brief period, that's my bias). If you put pickled things on a hot dog and I'm basically in heaven. You're talking to someone who only sees kielbasa as a vessel for sauerkraut. A bit more about the ambiance, it's dark, located upstairs with a small bar with friendly bartenders and a small lounge to your left. The jukebox plays motown (no detroit techno oontz oontz going on)and the most interesting thing is the row of lockers behind the bar, apparently Ivy and Coney has liquor lockers for patrons. You can purchase liquor at highly discounted service rates and store them there. For those of us who store bottles inside the water tank of the toilet at our favorite bar or in the trunk of our car this is great news. The bar is a little hard to find, follow the street addresses,you'll see a door with gold spray paint writing, that says stuff like "organic farm to table snout to tail emporium" "1 star yelp review" and "please instagram us" and you know you're at the right place.
