The staff in the memory care unit are all very friendly. Some of the standouts in friendliness and in taking an interest in my mom are Nick, Susie, Ariehanna, Marco (nurse) and Brittney (nurse). There was some frustration awhile back with my mom not getting her med orders from her doctor's office as Oakmont nurse fax was not working. This was eventually resolved when Ben intervened. Jhoana, director of nursing has also been very responsive. In dining in the Assisted Living dining room, the service could be improved in terms of servers checking back with the table to see how we are faring, and also asking if we would like drink refills. Isabella, a newer employee has been amazing though and goes above and beyond in these areas. She is definitely a stand out. Amy, the Memory Care Activities coordinator, has been great at trying to get my mom to come to activities. At times I have had a hard time connecting with activities department as I only have an email and it takes time to get a response back. I have wished there was another way to connect with them quickly other than email. Maria, the Director has been responsive and helpful when we have had concerns or provided feedback here and there. Edgar, Oakmont transporter, is very kind to my mom and responsive. Last but not least, the front desk ladies, Lexi and Maddy have been great! I love that they always greet me by name and are helpful with a multitude of things. I will mention one of the challenges of memory care is that there are different levels of impairment in the clients. My mom is higher functioning and I do wish there were more activities that she could join the assisted living residents in. This would require staff support and planning for her to go to some of those activities but I do think she would appreciate being with some higher functioning residents. She complains a lot about feeling lonely, as many of the other residents in memory care are not able to interact with her.

Much to my huge relief, my parents are genuinely happy and thriving in their new community. They even participate in two standing dinners each week with their new friends! It's no exaggeration that there is truly something for everyone with lots of fun activities, special events, excursions, and many opportunities for residents to interact. There is never a dull moment, and every holiday is celebrated with much fanfare. My quiet, introverted mother has blossomed into a quasi-social butterfly. She can't stop talking about the friendly new people she's met. As a nature lover, she loves her evening walks in the beautifully landscaped grounds. My father enjoys his daily visit to the mailroom and loves chatting with Olga at the front desk who never seems to have a bad day. He's a regular at the gym. He enjoys reading each page of the Weekly Happenings and Monthly Monitor. Both parents love using Morningside's app to review the daily menu before heading down to the restaurant for their meals. The wine offerings are impressive and prices very reasonable! They did notice a slight decline in the food quality/menu options throughout the year, but they said things are starting to improve with the new chef and the switch to a new seafood supplier. The app is easy to navigate and makes entering maintenance/work orders/staff feedback a breeze. Whoever designed the app did a great job because the user-interface is smooth and very intuitive. This is a huge compliment since my parents aren't native English speakers! ;-) A friend from one of their standing dinners is transitioning from independent living to memory care later this month. The group plans to invite him to their weekly dinners as much as possible if/when their meal credits allow. I'm sure Morningside will handle the move with the utmost care and compassion. You can be sure I'll be watching to see how the transition goes and will report back next year. TLDR: If you can figure out a way to make it work, don't hesitate to make the move to Morningside. I'm so happy my parents picked Morningside and wish they hadn't waited so long to make the move!

We couldn't be more pleased with the her experiences there. They have created a warm, personal environment, in which staff members are available to assist whenever needed. This includes managing my mother's numerous medications. They also work hard to create a social environment with residents sharing meals and activities when possible. Through recent renovations, they have created a beautiful and warm environment for the residents. This includes the addition of new flooring, paint, furniture, plumbing fixtures and additional lighting. They also have added exterior cameras and sensors to ensure the security of the residents. Aria makes sure that all rooms, clothing and bedding are cleaned regularly. My mom enjoys the freshly made meals that are cooked on the premises by the staff. Well planned meals are served three times a day. They make sure my mother receives food tailored to her health needs. Another big plus is that my mom is part of the Providence-St. Jude Health system. She is now only a few files away from her doctors' offices and St. Jude Hospital.

My personal experience: We placed my mom at Fullerton Gardens after a positive interaction with the person in charge of recruiting families (not the director). I researched and found that former residents had a positive experience here. We were very transparent with my mom's behavior and the extent of her Alzheimer's. The recruiter and director responded positively and said the behaviors we describe are all part of the disease. This includes wandering, taking things that belonged to others and denying medication. We were 100% transparent! Unfortunately within 2 weeks my mom was sent to the ER in hopes of a psych evaluation. After 2 trips to the ER and a 51/50 I find out that they are diligently trying to get her heavily medicated. This facility recommended that we use their medical contacts because that's how they get the patients medicated to their liking. My mom's psychiatrist told us "the director of that facility is asking me to give her some strong medication"! My mom left that facility with 5 medications. 4 more than what she started with. Every time we visited, we witnessed residents trying to exit the main building to go outside to their secure garden (one of their selling points). However, they were always redirected to go back inside. Not once did I see a resident roaming the garden. My guess is they don't have enough staff to have someone outside or they simply didn't want to go outside. In any case, don't be fooled by their beautiful grounds. Incontinence was an issue (never was before she was at Fullerton Gardens). Especially after the heavy medications. Apparently my mom was smearing her feces. It wasn't until we placed my mom in a more competent facility that we learned that they were probably not checking her diaper often enough. I confidently say this because at her new facility she has NEVER had an issue. This facility has issues because it is being run by a bitter, unfriendly, harsh woman-Sheryl McCaskil. She can put on a smile when you first meet her but it won't be long before her true colors show. Especially if you're not with anyone else. I tried to have an ombudsman with me whenever we met but it wasn't possible every time. Our few encounters that were just the two of us left me with my jaw on the floor. Just rude and immature. I can go on and on but it's not worth the stress it's bringing me back right now. When I tried to speak to a board member I quickly learned that wasn't going anywhere. Mostly Caucasian males...definitely not interested in the wellbeing of their residents. After finding the right placement for my mom I look back at her time here and my heart breaks for the residents that are still there. Please consider another place for your loved one if you're thinking about this facility. Don't be blinded by their beautiful grounds and fancy fliers My family and I went back and forth between lawyering up or not but we concluded that our energy is best spent finding a new place for my mom and making sure she's happy at her new facility. So far so good!
