Our experience with Sunny Crest Senior Living has been very positive, and we're grateful for the care and support our family member has received there. What stands out to us is that the care goes beyond the normal day-to-day. When our family member was hospitalized, we reached out to the Sunny Crest team for help communicating with the medical team. Brenda partnered with us and was willing to speak with the care providers and skilled nursing staff to better understand what would be needed for our family member's recovery and how Sunny Crest could support the post-care plan when they returned. Having them work with us and the medical team during that process meant a lot to our family and gave us peace of mind. One of the things that really touched us was seeing how genuinely happy everyone was when our family member returned. From the front desk and nursing staff to management and the restaurant staff, everyone seemed genuinely excited to see them and welcomed them back. It really felt like they were returning to a community where people knew them and cared about them. We also believe family involvement is an important part of assisted living. Sunny Crest is an assisted living community, not a hospital, a locked-down facility, or a memory care unit. Family members still have an important role to play by staying involved, advocating for their loved ones, and maintaining communication with the care team. We've found that Sunny Crest is willing to work with us as partners, and that makes a big difference. We appreciate the people at Sunny Crest who care for our family member and the way they support both our loved one and our family. This facility is extremely dirty and poorly maintained. The level of care is unacceptable. Supervisor Brenda and med tech Michelle treat residents with a shocking lack of compassion and respect. I witnessed residents being treated unfairly and neglected. It was heartbreaking to see how little regard they have for the wellbeing of the people they're supposed to be caring for. Please, do not place your family members here. You will regret it. They deserve better. read more

I'm writing this review out of genuine concern for the safety of the residents at this facility. While waiting outside for my kids to finish jiu-jitsu nearby, an elderly woman wandered down the street alone and visibly confused. She made eye contact with me and called out, asking for someone named "Kathy." At first, I thought she might be looking for a friend, but as she approached and I spoke with her, it became clear she was disoriented and needed help. I asked if she was okay. She said no, and that it had been a bad day. Based on her condition and proximity to this assisted living facility, I walked her back toward it, assuming it was where she came from. When we entered the front doors, I was met with confused looks by staff, no one seemed to notice she had been gone. They referred to her as Kathy (sp?), and this resident had short medium blonde hair, about 5'5. This is incredibly concerning. If a resident with dementia or similar cognitive challenges is able to walk straight out the front door and down the street unnoticed, that is a serious safety failure. Facilities like this have a responsibility to ensure their residents are properly monitored and cared for, especially those who are vulnerable and may require a secure environment. If you have a loved one at this facility, especially someone who may be experiencing dementia or Alzheimer's, please consider whether this is the right level of care. This woman should likely be in a memory care or locked unit for her own safety. This experience left me deeply unsettled, and I hope the management takes this as a wake-up call to improve oversight before something worse happens. read more

This facility may look nice from the outside but the experience inside was very disturbing. I came to visit a friend that lives here.When I enter the building I immediately noticed loud radio among staff members discussing that they could not locate someone I believe it was someone living here. The environment felt disorganized and worrying. I was standing near the corner at the front waiting while a kind gentleman assisted another family member at the front desk. One of the office doors was not closed and through the gap I could clearly see a staff member smoking inside the office. I was completely shocked by this. When the gentleman began helping me, the woman came out of the office I asked who she was and he told me her name was Brenda and that she is a nurse. She had long black hair and was wearing a red blouse that day. Overall the situation raised serious concerns regarding professionalism and proper conduct within the facility. read more

After understanding the needs of our father in an assisted living facility and having been a bit disappointed in the place we were at, we began looking at facilities. Sunny Crest Senior Living Facility ended being our choice. We found a room that not only had the amenities we were looking for but balconies in both rooms where even chairs and a small table can be set for enjoying a bit of fresh air without having to go out of the building. The staff, from the office personnel were fabulous and very welcoming. Diana was extremely helpful in making our move in as pain free as possible and constantly checked in with us to assist us with whatever we needed. The dining is very nice and has a menu that is well thought out and it changes frequently. The servers are patient and take their time with the residents needs without sacrificing speed and efficiency. Housekeeping are fabulous, professional and very good at what they do while making sure the resident is respected. Maintenance are on top of any issue and have solved every issue we've encountered. The med techs and caregivers are kind, attentive and warm in their approach with the residents as well as being the best in their profession. Overall it is a family setting, no one is overlooked and very friendly. Our father is very happy here and feels secure as he knows that there will always be someone checking in on him. Moved two family members here within the last year. There are some great individuals that work here, but the overall system is dysfunctional. Knowing what I know now, I would not have placed my loved ones here. We trusted the care team to provide medication. After a physician asked to see the log of medications - related to an emergency surgery - I discovered that medication was regularly not administered and that their logs were incomplete. They administered medication that was not logged. This is based on hours of research, including copies of their logs. The ceiling recently caved in due to water damage. The lobby feels like a hazmat area with plastic sheeting creating tunnels for movement between the front door and the living areas. The service in the dining hall isn't great. I've witnessed bitter waitresses complain about their work. One stated: "I can't believe I have to deal with this crap for $12 an hour." It's pretty clear that the staff is overwhelmed. They are working in a tough environment with a lot of demands on their time. This means that getting meaningful, timely assistance is difficult. We have paid thousands of dollars for 3rd party care-giving because we do not trust the reliability of the in-house team. I hope this all changes for the better soon, but there have been at least two different Directors, the sales person that we worked with has quit and many of the caregivers state they are in the process of quitting. read more

IMPORTANT READING... My mom lived at Sunnycrest for 6 years. The first 4 were great. It was family owned and run with compassion and they were on top of things. THEN IT GOT BOUGHT OUT BY A BIG CORPORATE. Since the buy out, there are only 2 people that haven't quit. There is a major shortage of professional, caring, and competent personnel. And it's not Covid-related. Since it was bought there have been 4-5 different directors 4-5 different activity personnel, 4 or 5 nursing or wellness directors 6 or more different med techs 10 plus different caregivers 3 different sales people 5 different maintenance people They don't get paid fairly, they are understaffed and overworked which makes it chaotic. Most importantly is that the residents don't always realize this and they end up unattended and often have to have emergent care. TWO PHYSICIANS THAT I RECENTLY SPOKE WITH REGARDING WHAT HAS HAPPENED, TOLD ME TO GET MY MOM OUT OF THERE FOR HER HEALTH AND WELL-BEING. THEIR COLLEAGUES HAD ALSO TAKEN NOTE OF THE CHANGES. IT WOULD BE RISKY TO LIVE THERE... I could go into details of extreme incompetence (especially from the head nurse J) but that could be a novel. I am happy that we had some great years there with many happy memories and wonderful people on board, but just know, things have consistently and sadly sunken very low. The facility at Sunnycrest was just what I was looking for for my father. The staff is so kind and Ryan has gone above and beyond to help me. I am a local singer/entertainer. On May 30, 2022 I performed a musical show for their community and to this day have not been paid for my show. As a person considering leaving my loved one here, I would think twice about trusting a facility with such a lack of professionalism and ethics. I have never been this amazed to any Assisited Living Community but to Sunnycrest. Shawna, their Marketing Director and Heather their Executive Director are both very hands on when it comes to Patient Care. Shawna, dearly loves her residents. She goes way over above and beyond for them. The pandemic has stretched everybody so thinly, but Sunnycrest approached it with Love and Compassion for their residents. They ensure that while they are socially distance and safe, they are still connected to their families. Shawna has filled their hearts with Love letters for elderly written out by volunteers and kids to send out some love and cheer!. Heather and her team, set up an extraordinary heart warming & energizing parade last Mothers Day. Each week there is always something to look forward to! There is a spirit of unity, camaraderie and love to everyone. They have vibrant dance every week lead by the huge smile of Shawna. Heather's team is simply the best. Adding, Jessica as the new Resident Care Director is another major addition to this hard working team. She is quick to her feet and she is always reachable when it comes to the residents need. Moving my mom from one senior living place to another is challenging but during the COVID-19 pandemic, it's all the more difficult. But, Sunnycrest did a superb job of making the transition for my mom a peaceful one and all along the way assured our family of their deep care for her by all their efforts. From the director (Heather) working out a great move-in package to the marketing rep (Shawna) who took care of the details and follow-up (even decorating my mom's room since family cannot go in yet) to the maintenance super (Nick) and his team who hauled everything up to room and handled set-up to the other wonderful staff and residents who welcomed my mom ... we couldn't be more happy and grateful. Side note: My mom had lived here before but due to finances we moved her out last year to another less expensive facility. What we learned is "you get what you pay for." In this season when our elderly loved ones are being isolated from family, they need a place that recognizes that and does everything they can to keep their minds and bodies active. Sunnycrest is that place and so much more!! Now I understand why Vibrant Life is their motto. read more

I agree with many reviewers that Sunnycrest is a nice place for a family member ...if they DON'T need an assistance package. The Positives at SC 1.The activities for seniors varies, we appreciated the exercise classes that helped my mother's physical well being. 2.We were happy with Elaine's beauty services and how convenient it was for our mom to get a cut, color or manicure. 3.The food was okay for my taste, my mom lost weight at SC (she was overweight and isn't any longer) apparently she wasn't a fan of the meals. 4.The Medtechs are top rated, kind and sympathetic and they were the main reason my mom stayed as long as she did. The Negatives at SC 1. Response Time after pressing their assigned amulet is not acceptable especially when paying the highest tier care package. 2.SC takes their time addressing/repairing issues in the apartments. 3.The caregiver staff is ever changing and sometimes very green and at 5k/month we expected more. 4.Visitor parking is a challenge, not much available, take comfortable shoes, it may be a nice stroll after locating a parking space. I hope this helps for those shopping for assisted living for a loved one. You may want to ask about the negative list and GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING if they've made improvements since this review. The negatives out weighed the positives for my mom but the Fullerton location and grounds were safe and clean. read more

I can't say enough good things about this community and its staff. My father resisted going into assisted living for several years. When I finally persuaded him but it was the right thing to do, the staff worked with us, met with my dad, talked through the challenges that we had and we formulated a great plan for dad's future. Everything was considered, including finances. I found the fees at this facility to be very affordable especially considering dad's financial situation. Although my dad became ill and was never able to enjoy his beautiful apartment, again, the staff was kind and compassionate. If my family were to need assisted-living for me, I would definitely want them to consider Sunnycrest. Thank you to Ryan Heather and Jessica especially. Highly recommend. read more

First of all I want to start by saying that I'm very familiar with all the Senior Living Communities in Orange County. Being an Elder Care Advisor for the past 8 years I have explored all the senior living options in the area! Sunnycrest Senior Living has proven to be an excellent choice for many families I have worked with. They are a compassionate caring group of people who cater to different levels of care. They work hard to satisfy the individual needs of each resident. I highly recommend them as an excellent option to consider for your loved ones if not the best!!! read more

All we can do is let others know what happened to us in hope that this won't happen to anyone else. What we liked about Sunnycrest: it has great entertainment, a beautiful property and provides transportation to doctors. On the negative: now that we have had time and during the high coronavirus epidemic, we can now grieve and share our experience that our mother, grandmother, aunt and we had at SC. Two days later, after her death, we were moving my mother's belongings and it looked like her room had been rummaged through because things were out of place. My mother's door had a lock on it and the outside world was not allowed inside the facility. The most upsetting part is my mother's purse was gone through on the day she died and her Social Security, Medicare cards and Drivers License ID were missing. Her change purse was empty. Other items that were missing include a crystal Mikasa Palazzo Vase, a My Pillow, 10 to 12 Alfred Dunner cute blouses, and a painting of poppies that disappeared overnight in the move. We took pictures for the movers coming the next day and the canvas poppy picture frame was the only one painted on the sides of the frame and is visible in the picture. We reported the items to the office as missing and were told "You misplaced them, no one here steals." When my mother would report items gone, I was told "Oh she is just confused." One example is: she would count how many toilet paper rolls she had and by the end of the week the number was lower. You have to buy your own toilet paper; it is not provided. When we went through my mother's clothing that we moved, many had stains and some we didn't recognized as being hers. We paid for laundry service. What we have learned we want to share with others to prevent them from going through this horrible experience. Ideas that might help: Move all valuables and items the day your parent dies. Find the Social Security and Medicare Cards, Credit Cards and Drivers License ID. When moving in, keep a written inventory of every single item in the room. Take pictures of each item and have it signed and verified. Keep a notebook off sight of items. Costume jewelry only and save all receipts for police and insurance. When moving out take pictures of each item before you pack everything, especially if you have to leave belongings overnight. Again, have the written inventory signed and verified of what is in the room. Do not leave until you watch them lock the door. Don't ask them to throw anything away, do it yourself. When visiting love ones, check that your items are still there including clothing. Sew in name labels. The paintings done by family were not taken, only the real painting from the store disappeared. No one should be dealing with Fullerton Police, Social Security, Medicare and DMV and taking on other identity theft actions after a death. read more

We are so pleased that we chose Sunnycrest Senior Living for my sister to live. The facility is clean, beautiful and offers ample fun activities. The staff is so helpful, kind, and responsive. She loves the food and has made many good friends. Ryan gave us a comprehensive tour and thoroughly described all of the various room and care options. He spent all of the time that we needed knowing that it was an important decision. The courtyard is welcoming and conducive to sitting and talking with friends. When we moved my sister in, Nick the facility manager was very accommodating and went above and beyond to help us set up her room. They helped make the transition smooth for all of us. read more

It's unfortunate that I receive calls from my Mother telling me the kitchen is out of the standard staples such as milk, bread, mayonnaise, butter, juice to name a few. The other morning she was served her French toast breakfast several hours late and it came without syrup and butter. She went down to the kitchen in her robe to ask for some and the staff said they were out of syrup and butter!! This is beyond words. She also mentioned she found two black small bugs in her spaghetti! Things are slipping severely over here. Be on the look out if you care for your loved ones. All the recent reviews I read on this site have also happened with my Mother. Medicine found siting on a tray, trash overflowing, unsanitary areas after housekeeping. Very displeased! We had our dad at Sunnycrest, but had to move him because he was not receiving the care he needed. If your loved one can care for themself and just wants activities and a great chef, I say go for it. However, if your loved one needs anything more, I'd recommend you not put him/her here. We needed to check on Dad every day to make sure he was being cared for. Sometimes, the bed was made with no sheets on it. Other times, it was made with the sheets being left wet after an overnight accident. If Dad used his bedside urinal in the middle of the night, we often had to demand that it be emptied each morning. We had to make sure his bedtime medications were given out at bedtime; several times they were given in the afternoon instead. A couple times the caregivers forgot to get Dad for meals, and we found out later that he missed a particular meal. All of this was exhausting. The staff, including the caregivers, are very kind. They definitely care about their clients. However, they seem to do the bare minimum. Just be prepared to stay on top of them if you or a loved one moves in. read more

The 2 stars are for the environment and the friendliness of the front desk staff. However I feel extremely uncomfortable about their activity coordinator Carmen. I tried to email and call her numerous times to visit a resident there that had invited me to visit. She continuously ignored my requests and acted like they were prisoners. Sunnycrest was a love/hate relationship for me. The love part was for Kristen, Michelle, & Pamela. These were the lovely, sweet, caring, AMAZING, people that you first meet at Sunnycrest!!! Always kind, know your loved ones very well, are willing to do anything to help. These were the people that brighten your day when you walk in and around the premises!! I don't know what keeps them there! I also loved the activities they provided, such as bingo, yoga, van outings, workout with weights. These are well thought out. My mom took advantage of all of it. It can be a very social place. I agree with the previous reviewer regarding the management...or lack of it. Sherri was one of the most unfriendly people I had ever met. Very negative. Not kind. Bossy. It did seem like the turnover there was constant, I assume she is the reason. I agree with the comment about the contracts...you never knew how much you were being charged until suddenly a different amount was pulled out of your bank account...which I DID NOT LIKE!!! I would have preferred to get the bill and pay it, but they have you sign paperwork in advance stating they can take the money directly from your account:-( Although, Pat was very helpful and did correct the amounts when I noted them. She has a tough job!!! I also think that was due to management. Parking was very difficult, but I could get over that. I was always able to find a place. Now, in saying all this....when I have to put my dad in care, I would consider doing it at Sunnycrest. Hopefully I won't have to do that soon. I do feel with a better management the place can improve quickly and be a better place for him! The net of it is your parent will like it better than you do, unless changes are made....and that's what is most important anyhow:-) read more

Ryan has patiently answered endless questions, phone calls and has been immediately responsive & available to us. His tour for us was comprehensive and so enjoyable that I was saying I'm ready to move in now! We've met with Ryan several times & his knowledge of all phases of moving, the multitude of decisions that have to be addressed, problems that have arisen, he has been an invaluable asset & guide! I LOVE my job! I look forward to getting out of bed to come to work. Sunnycrest is a great place to work. The ACTIVITIES ROCK at Sunnycrest: lunch outings, shopping, trips to the library, ice cream socials, equestrian trails, chair chi, bingo, bocce ball, movie nights, Zumba fitness, exercise 5 days a week, entertainment, card games, spanish class, daily chronicles, walking club, an event for every holiday (including Easter hunts, Mother's Day Tea, etc.), sing alongs, educational classes, baking, trivia games, wii, and birthday party celebrations. They also offer Skype so that the residents can talk to their friends and family. And the food is amazing! Love our smoothie socials! The staff and the residents really form a friendship with each other so it's like a family here :) read more

I am currently a volunteer at Sunnycrest and I am not sure what Stephen D. is referring to. On the contrary, the Activities Director Carmen is very organized and accepts ALL volunteers who are respectful and caring towards her residents! She welcomed me with open arms since the moment I walked into Sunnycrest and has been a great supervisor and mentor to all volunteers. Carmen ensures that all volunteers have an abundance of interactive opportunities with the residents and puts an incredible amount of passion into her job! The residents are a joy to work with and truly change your life! I wouldn't trade any of the moments I have spent with them for anything in the world. They love when volunteers come in and constantly thank you for your time. Sunnycrest has been one of the best volunteering opportunities I have ever had and would definitely recommend this program to anyone!! read more

My mother is in the process of transitioning to assisted living, and we've been working with Ryan Ziegenbusch, who has been just outstanding in working with us on every detail of the process. I'm so grateful knowing that my mom will be in such good hands. It's a lovely place, and I'm looking forward to spending time at Sunnycrest with her and the other residents of the Sunnycrest community. OK so if you can WALK and TALK and pretty much care for yourself, then be my guest and live at Sunnycrest! My father-in-law was not that lucky! He could not walk ( at all) and didn't communicate well..But they accessed him and said YES we can take good care of him! NO! THEY CANNOT! Many ER visits, many 3 am calls due to falls and "cuts and bruises" 2 Brain Bleeds from falling ( per CT scans at St Jude ER) Simply because he was not being "cared for" Then we were told in order for him to come back to Sunnycrest He had to have a "Licensed, Private Care Giver" to sit and observe him all day @ $25.00 an hour!!! Huh? I thought the 5k+ we paid per month was for them to watch him?? NOPE! My husband then began searching for another home for his Dad.. Meanwhile we switch to Hospice Palliative Care so he could even have "more eyes and more care on him" But sure enough, 5am call from Hospice, he fell again!! He looked like he was beat up!! His face all messed up! They said he fell out of bed? I personally question that!! ER Dr said "DO NOT TAKE HIM BACK TO SUNNYCREST"! Luckily from the search we had been doing a lovely Board & Care home in Yorba Linda said they would take him and HE IS DOING AWESOME! He never went back to Sunnycrest, and when I told the District Mgr this whole story, he waived our 30 day notice! Which saved us over 5k!!! I pray he did more than just waive our money, and cleaned house!! However, Elizabeth was a Great Care Taker! Also...someone there combed his hair into a Mohawk! This is a man that is a WWII Vet with pride and likes to look nice everyday! But someone felt the desire to belittle him, & embarrass him and comb his hair into a Mohawk!! We emailed/called and complained to Sherry ( Director) and was told " the girl that did it didn't mean to upset anyone" so that tells me they KNEW who did it!! Was she fired? Ever since Natalie ( head of the caretakers) left, this place went into the TOILET!! I am outraged!! read more

I am once again coming forth to sing the praises of The Sunnycrest Senior Facility and staff as they hosted another CSUFullerton University Singers Reunion in honor of one of their residents Dave Thorsen last evening. Alma, the Director of Activities was gracious in making sure that we were cleared to use the Activity room and made sure the kitchen staff knew that an extra 20 mouths were needing to be fed. Once we arrived we were met with smiles and all was smoothly taken care of for dinners and we were escorted to our dining room. Avery and Erica were assigned to help with meeting our needs for dinner and they were an absolute delight. Kindness, smiles, attentiveness and graciousness are just some of the incredible adjectives to describe their demeanor. Dinner was most tasty, so kudos to the chef as well. We had an incredible evening of friendship, sharing and singing. It was fun singing for some of the residents, and trusting they enjoyed it too. Thank you Sunnycrest for your gracious hospitality and we are hoping to set another reunion date in November sometime. We are so very thankful and appreciative. read more

I currently reside at Sunnycrest with my husband. I've been here since 11/2012. My experience is that the facility provides exactly what they represented to me when I met with the Jeff LaBelle, the director before I moved in. I knew coming in that they do not provide, nursing, memory care or hospice services. This is "assisted living" only. Both my husband and I use walkers and sometimes a wheel chair. The staff here helps with our bathing, daily housecleaning, laundry, administering our meds, transportation to the bank, pharmacy, grocery store and daily outings. They stress physical activity and socialization and provide ample opportunity for that with exercise classes, movies, high caliber music and games that you may participate in. Additionally, I changed my medicare supplemental policy to Caremore Touch because they Caremore has a special policy where if you are in this facility a nurse comes once a week to check up on you who can write prescriptions and keep a general eye on your mental and physical condition. The doctor comes once a month unless you require more often. I have asthma and have occasional respretory issues. If I have a flare up the staff at Sunnycrest or I can contact the Caremore nurse and she will come in the next day. All I can say is that the staff I have encountered are well trained, love their job and have been there since I have. If my husband or I even miss a meal, they are knocking at out door to make sure we are okay and will bring our meal to our room if we desire. My daughter and I checked out every other assisted living facilities from Huntington Beach to Whittier and not only is Sunnycrest the cleanest, but the rooms and apartments are bigger, the food is great and the rates are the lowest of anywhere else we saw. This is a case of getting the best for by far the best price. Maybe it's because it's privately owned and not part of a "chain." Talk to Jeff LaBelle for a tour. He is the director. If I could give Sunnycrest a zero star rating I would. My Grandmother was here for quite some time and some woman ran her over purposely with her motorized scooter. Sunnycrest's employees stated that the woman had 3 notices to slow down because she hit other people. COMPLETE NEGLIGENCE, they should have restricted her use of the motorized scooter since she has a history of hitting people.My grandmother broke her spine and has since been bedridden. She was a lively person going to the events and this situation has changed her way of life dramatically. To top it off the moment she was bedridden she started complaining about the workers treating her badly, not changing her diapers often and some even handling her roughly. Once we heard that we immediately moved her and sought out legal counsel to be able to at least give her the best care possible by trying to get Sunnycrest to settle out due to negligence. And what does Sunnycrest do? They ignore all contact and don't respond to one letter, phone call or letter. All she wanted was to be made whole since they treated her terribly and was the reason she was in this mess. She can't walk, she is in a diaper and living the rest of her golden years bed ridden. Before this she did not take any medication and even was dancing. I would never, ever recommend Sunnycrest to anyone looking for an assisted living center. If you love your parents, grandparents or whoever is wanting to check this place out look elsewhere. *if safety is the number one priority then why would you allow someone to have multiple warnings on a motorized scooter when you guys know that is a safety issue. read more

An update: After SunnyCrest changed management, more that a year ago, the place has been terrible. At first the new management assured us that the issues were due to transition difficulties, and things would improve soon. Well the trend has not been toward improvement, but toward being progressively worse. The food is poor in both quality and quantity. The portions are small and they often run out of the "featured" items. I put featured in quotes, because it's a stretch to call anything a feature. We're not talking about filet mignon, or even steak. They run out of main course offerings and desert items. Yesterday mom asked for the pudding that was on the menu. No pudding. No ice cream. How about some breakfast yogurt for desert? The beef stew has very little beef. The chicken soup has only a hint of chicken. My parents rarely complain, but even they have not been able to tolerate the poor food quality. So what about the service? It too lacks in quality and quantity. My parents often have to wait longer than reasonable for routine living assistance that they pay to receive. My folks have good relationships with the service providers, there just aren't enough providers to do all that needs to be done. Sometimes the service never comes. Transportation services have need stopped. Entertainment has been cut back. Events that are advertised and anticipated are abruptly cancelled without notice. It pains me to hear of the issues, week after week. My folks like the location and wanted to make it work. They have been patiently waiting for things to improve, but enough is enough. The facility is fine for mobile seniors however my 96 year old mother is bed bound and must be fed. Several times no one has fed her all day (the meals are sitting there untouched). I have continually complained about this and it keeps happening. It's senior abuse to starve her like that. read more

My 101-year old mother has been living at Sunnycrest for 3 years now. It's a very nice, attractive, well-maintained place, and the residents are nicely taken care of by the attentive, friendly staff. The food is excellent, and available to the residents all day long. I want to give a shout-out to Monique Avila, the Resident Care Director, who is a registered nurse there. She helped me tremendously by recommending Silverado Hospice as a Medi-care paid service, heightening the in-house care of my mother, whose mental capacity has been steadily declining. Without this help, it would be increasingly problematic keeping her there, and a skilled nursing home would only be covered by Medi-care for about 3 months. This has been a God-send for us! I also wanted to mention Alma Gonzales, who does a bang-up job as Activities Director! Last August she threw my mother a birthday party for residents, at which Roy Southerland, a delightful entertainer at senior living centers, serenaded her. To all this may concern: I have tried to volunteer at Sunnycrest for the last three weeks for an academic unpaid internship. I was told that it would be no problem by Carmen Galicia (volunteer coordinator), however, I have realized that this young women has given me the run-around for three weeks. I am, and always have been polite and respectful and that is the manner that I conducted myself during the entire process of attempting to put hours towards helping others. I realized today that I will be unable to volunteer because of what seems like lackadaisical employees. Let me explain in entirety: I arrived there around three weeks ago and Lia (front desk receptionist) said there was no available volunteer positions. Carmen (volunteer specialist) overheard and told me that there was available positions and that she would update the system so I could volunteer. I called several times afterwards (a couple times a week) but no one got back to me. Lia (front desk receptionist) said that she was busy and they said she was out of town for a week. At this point I did not know what to do, so I called the CICE specialists for volunteering at Cal State Fullerton to assist Carmen in updating the system so I could volunteer. The CICE said they would assist Carmen and that it would be a simple five- minute phone call to update the system in order for me to volunteer hours. The CICE called several times and emailed her as well. After three weeks of no contact I drove over to Sunnycrest to see what was going on. Carmen had the time to see me after a few minutes and said that she had called CICE back and said she could not get through, but this was a blatant lie. I called the CICE immediately after the conversation and and they said they had not heard from her.They called again and Lia (the receptionist) said that she was busy and had two jobs. This was five-minutes after Carmen told me to have CICE call as she would be available to speak with the CICE and do what she said she would do three weeks prior. In other words: she lied about contacting them and lied about putting time towards doing what she said she would do several times during a three-week duration. It would not of been an issue if Carmen simply told me that she could not approve my volunteer request, but for the first week she repeatedly said she would update the system to accommodate my request. Apparently, she had no intention of doing this. I write this review because if the other services at sunnycrest are similar to how I was treated than I would strongly recommend another assisted living care facility for anyone considering this site. How unusual. I wrote a detailed, truthful review based on my mother's residing there for 5 years. After 2 days, the review disappeared! Then it came back and was on Yelp for a couple months. Now it's gone again! So I thought I would write a new more informed review. My mother entered this facility when she could no longer reside alone. She had early onset dementia. She did well for years, under Janet's patient care. When the new executive director, Jeff took over, everything changed. Most of the staff was fired or quit. The one review about the activities director LOVING her job is no longer there! Hmmm? Here' my story, and hopefully it will not mysteriously disappear. My mothers health and mobility had deteriorated to the point where she was too obese to walk and take care of herself. AT ALL. I went to talk to Jeff about the "extra services" that can be added to care. My mother had a "wheelchair assist" package. This package was supposed to take my mom to and from meals in the dining room. I found out on my own by showing up, and by other resident telling me, that my mother had been parked and left in the dining room for hours. Worse, she was constantly given food. Inactivity and neglect at Sunnycrest Senior Living caused my mother's obesity. Then my poor mom became incontinent. Again, I went to Jeff. She was put on the $1000.00 a month incontinace package. My mother was supposed to be checked every two hours. At first thre was a chart on her bathroom door that the "helpers" would sign. There were many times when I came to visit that I could see, they weren't coming. The chart wasn't signed. Then it disappeared. Most of the wonderful staff that I had got to know over the years was gone. I had no contacts there anymore. Wonderful people like Janet, Janette, Anna, Shermaine and others. Before I go on to the horrible details that ended my mom's stay permanently, I need t say this. Sunnycrest Senior Living is fine if you are in pretty good shape. It is an independent and assisted living facility. It is where we come to the assistance, that I take issue. Jeff is writing checks he can't cover. The incontinace service is criminal! Yes criminal. I got a phone call one evening from Sunnycrest Senior Living telling me that my mother had fallen down. They have called many times saying that she had fallen but was okay. This time she needed to go to St Jude Emergency. I met her there. The first thing I noticed was the unbelievable stench. While my family and I were waiting for a doctor, I asked two certified nursing assistant (CNA'S) if they could clean up my mom. They did this behind the curtain. It took about 15 minutes. I could here my mom yelling in pain and fear. What emerged from the room was disgusting. My mother was in an adult diaper that was filled with fresh and old fecal matter and urine stains. Another "clean?" Diaper was pulled over the filthy one. Unsurprisingly, the doctor ordered that my mom could not go back to Sunnycest. Than God! Once my family informed Jeff of the emergency room episode, he was full of apologies, he was actually full of something else. He said he would give a month of the incontinent fee back. He also told us that he had fired her caretaker, expressing that we were like family and he was so sorry...blah blah blah. Well, Jeff was not rue to his word. He did not give back the funds he promised verbally, and after several emails and phone calls, he basically just blew us off with a cold email. This Exectutive Director is more interested and proud of his newly remodeled lobby that looks like a bad acid trip. What is that about? Yuck. After you get past the water feature, neon and turquoise. You can walk across the mis matched floors that are supposed to look hip and cool. Funny thing is, go around the corner where the residents live and you will see and smell the thin urine soaked carpet. I don't like that the lobby was done first. Jeff told me that remodel was being done in 3 phases. The whole place is supposed to be done. Hey, just my opinion, but I would have started that remodel with the residential area. My mothers air conditioning constantly dripped from the ceiling. There fix?...put a bucket under it! As you can see this is a very biased review, but there is good reason for it and every word I have written is true. Please do not go here looking for your parent to be cared for.
