Super cute little restaurant. Way better than I expected and service was excellent! Met up with my friend at Prospect Park for a walk and she wanted to try their hot chocolate because she heard it was good. We were freezing cold and slightly hungry so decided to stop by and give it a try. There are 2 sides of the restaurant. The side for hot chocolate was Guatemalan, and since its covid there is only out door dining. We wanted to try everything and had a hard time deciding on what to order. There are variety of hot chocolates, soups and so much food! We ended up setting for the regular hot chocolate and 2 soups. This is where they cross the line and get 5 stars from us. We planned on splitting everything including 1 hot chocolate (which i bet can be annoying for restaurants) but the waiter was not only accommodating but they split everything in half for us including the soups! Maybe because it was covid, but it really made the experience amazing and hospitable even though we were freezing outside. My boyfriend & I were delighted to "discover" Ix, after an early-morning race of his in Prospect Park. The decor is charming, & the staff is both friendly & attentive. We each had the Huevos Rancheros, which was preceded by complimentary chips & beans, which was odd only in that those were two of the principle ingredients of the dish we'd just ordered. The Huevos Rancheros were like none we'd ever had, with the eggs served atop blue corn tortilla chips, with sides of a parmesan-like cheese, very watery beans & either sour cream or cream cheese, but the differences to other huevos rancheros we had may be attributable to their being Guatemalan & our being more familiar with Mexican cuisine. All in all, it's worth a stop, if you're buy the park, but maybe not worth a schlep from Manhattan specifically to eat there. read more

My hubby and I went to try the traditional Guatemalan dish called "fiambre" that is made on November 1, All Saints Day. It was absolutely delicious! My favorite dish is definitely "pepian". It's a stew made of chicken (beef too) and all types of tomatoes/spices and herbs. I also recommend their "Michelada" with "La Famosa" Guatemalan beer. The owner is super nice. I used to order delivery from here and thought the food was just alright, then recently I came in person for the first time and realized the food was way better served in-house. Menu is creative and an innovative mix of different cuisines. They have a huge selection of hot chocolates that aren't too sweet and are super rich and flavorful (also they come in these really cute mugs!!). Favorite thing here is probably the chimichurri shrimp sliders (I have a weakness for chimichurri sauce and the flavor here definitely delivers). Really like the complimentary bean dip with tortilla chips. Their house chili sauce goes so well with everything, especially the bean dip. The caldo ix soup is very comforting on cold days. Beleza sandwich is great too. Rosemary churros are something I hadn't seen before but the rosemary works really well surprisingly. Though they bill themselves as a Guatemalan eatery, their menu bends the rules with dishes like kimchi soup and a blue cheese omelette. As the NYT profile of the restaurant suggests, the chef brainstorms creative ingredient combinations in the middle of the night, and the flavors speak for themselves--this is fusion done right. Everything from the food to the cute vinyl record shaped menus suggests great care in small details which make for a nice dining experience at Ix. Of the dishes we ordered, the shrimp sliders were the tastiest. The shrimp was surprisingly plump, juicy, and tender, considering the low price point. The chimichurri sauce rounded it out nicely and paired deliciously with the ciabatta bread it came on. I'd love to have a bottle of that chili oil they have, which I'd guess is made in house. Mayan, oh mayan, ix delixious!! Ix ... Monty Python's Flying Circus Down at the southern end of the Franklin Avenue Shuttle there is a portal to the Mayan realm. "Ix," the Mayan word for jaguar, or at least, like an astrological symbol roughly equating to a jaguar. Ix (pron. "eesh" according to a neat-o article in the Grey Lady). The inside of the place is like a Mayan rainforest (or at least a Mayan Rainforest Cafe™). We chose a cozy little two-seater in the corner. (It's considered, in these parts, especial bad form for a party of two to take up a four-person table or, Ix forbid, a six-person table! If you're a party of two, get a two-banger, please and thank you). The menus are inside of old, broken, painted vinyl LPs. There are tons of sections within the menu. One concerned omelettes, one concerned tortillas de huevo; one concerned desserts, one concerned unidentifiable botany of some sort and a creature that looked suspiciously like a dragon. We each got omelettes. Dave got the blue cheese, pear + pecan crunch. I got the Honey goat cheese, fig, Modena balsamix reduction + macadamia crunch. And some lime alfajores for the table, please. Oh and an ix cacao w espresso shot for me, and some sort of fondue hot chocolate for Dave. An alfajor, sing. of "alfajores," is like honey and crunch and other sweet stuff. Its quondam abode is the Iberian peninsula, from whence it was imported to South Amerixa. However, before that, it was possiblye taken from the Arabian peninsula. Arabian. Iberian. Then to Mayan. The word alfajor possiblye comes from the Arabix al-fakher, meaning luxurious. They surely were that. They were softish and lime-ish and delicious. A perfect sweet appetizer for our soon-to-come savory life-changers. (Results may vary). Dave would like to highlight how thick the omelette was; it was like 7/16″ thick (whereas most omelettes are lucky to be 1/4″). They were also fluffy and perfectly round. The blue cheese was a game changer. A life changer. A world changer. A stranger danger. The ingredients were perfectly proportioned and the eggs were perfectly cooked. We were given little soft tortilla shells, too, but tbh couldn't figure out exactly what they were for, and were too embarrassed to ask. So Bo put some of his side salad in one, and Dave used another to clean up some of the omelette goop from his plate. How were the cocoa drinks you ask? You've got some nerve, buddy. My ix with espresso shot (the regular drink is non-caffeinated) was one of the most sweet and delicious cocoa-flavored beverages I have ever, ever had ever ever. It's just like what I always imagined the cocoa to have tasted like in that book the Polar Express. Remember that book? Remember where they got cocoa on the train and it was like magic or something? I guess what we're trying to say is, that the ix with espresso cacao drink at Ix ix magixal. Literally. I have powers now. Dave's drink tasted fine. But it was sort of goopy and soupy and fondue-oopy. Barely a liquid. Almost a non-Newtonian fluid. It was an acceptable beverage stand-in for the meal, but would have made a better portable-breakfast-on-the-go option. The overall check was something like $40. A small prixe to pay for the best things you'll ever have. Go to Ix. You won't regret ix. With 10 as a must-eat, this dining experience rates a 9. Pro Tip: If any of y'all go here, please find out what we were supposed to have done with our soft tortilla shells. That's the pro tip! And we, obvi, are not yet pros. One of my go-tos in PLG! I love their tortilla chip and bean dip they serve you while you're waiting for your food. Their brunch menu is amazing - we ordered the Chicken and Waffles with the different fruit butters and the Manchego grilled cheese with french onion dip. Both were unique and flavorful! I haven't encountered fruit butters before, so I thought that was a cool take on a classic dish. The french onion dip turned out to be a little bowl of soup that you dip the sandwich in and it is life-changing! The flavors mixed together are 11/10. Also, ordered the Rosemary churros on another visit and I would recommend ordering them! The churros are fresh and pair well with the dulce de leche sauce. I would have liked to see the rosemary infused into the churros a bit more as they were more of a garnish on top of the churros. A miss for me was the Crazy corn in a cup - I was expecting it to be similar to an esquite, but the corn wasn't that sweet and not worth price. I have lived in the neighborhood a while and always see this place but have never gone which was a big mistake. I got takeout for lunch and was so pleased. Next time I definitely want to dine in. Everything was packaged up and sealed perfectly so there was no risk of a mess. I got the IX hot chocolate which was dark and bitter but sweet and creamy, so indulgent and one of if not the best hot chocolate I have ever had. To eat I got the Caldo Tlalpeno Rojo soup. When I ordered I was a little surprised at the price but it made sense when I got it because it was huge!! Definitely a portion for 2 people or someone really hungry but it worked out because now I have leftovers. The soup itself was so unique to me, so much flavor and packed with stuff, every bite is filled. I loved everything about it, it felt familiar and comforting but with exciting flavors. What to make of a restaurant that has the following entrees: Crazy corn in a cup.. Caldo soup that consists of chicken, potatoes and carrots.. Hot figs with honey and baked goat cheese.. large varieties of hot chocolate...one that sounded tempting: Xelaju that had a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Of course you can get a Cubano Sandwich or Spinach and feta omelette.. the less exotic options... then Ix is your place. Met my nephew, Adam, here for brunch on Sunday who has eaten here previously and warned me " Auntie you have to have an exotic palette". Game on! First off, it is a cute restaurant that shares its space with a Mexican taqueria; it has close quarters. The outside seating has a green covering and little tables. For brunch there are specials like chicken and waffles, eggs Benedict, pork belly sandwich... The menu is substantial and is written in English and Spanish. Well first, priorities need to be met.. uh.. drink menu por favor!!! And there were some nice cocktails to choose from.. I opted for the frozen white sangria which really isn't frozen( let it go,let it go, I know cheap shot, just had to say it ;) ) I asked for mucho fruit in it and server said it has a mango flavor.. hmmm I realized I wasn't drinking sangria Victors Cafe style.. but what the heck.. bring it. My nephew ordered the mimosa, you guessed it, with mango. For starters, we ordered the Honey fig with goat cheese. I am not a fan of goat cheese but game on... First, we were given tortilla chips with a side of black bean sauce ( interesting) which was a bit watery. The hot fig was not something I can review favorably due to goat cheese.. but my nephew loved it. It comes in an oval baking dish with a plethora of goat cheese over the figs and a line of plum sauce. I did not taste honey and this was oddly served with tortilla chips.. hmm.. interesting. As I waited for the main entrees, I was ready for another sangria.. server didn't come around to offer. I was pleasantly surprised that I liked my exotic entree.. egg white omelet with spinach and mozzarella ( can't do feta which is the cheese it comes with; I asked to sub with mozzarella) and a side of greens ( lemon dressing served on top). It was very tasty and light and also came with a side of blue tortilla wraps. Adam ordered the chicken and waffles that came with three swirls of butter: guava, strawberry and salty and real maple syrup. The chicken was not your typical fried chicken breast ( channeling Sweet Chick) but chicken tenders. The entree was a nice size and he ended up taking half home. All in all not a bad spot to spend a Sunday.. Here are the positives: eclectic menu, walking steps to Prospect Park, the cocktails are good and a nice Brooklyn vibe. Accessible by subway: Q to Prospect Park and 1 minute walk or B16 bus that leaves you in front of restaurant. Soul warming Guatemalan food! What a quaint place in the middle of Brooklyn! Come here for Guatemalan coffee, their wide variety of soups and stews and equally warm staff! Full disclosure I went there twice in a 10 day trip just so I could have their Caldo Ix soup again. Enough for a meal and then some! Especially all my desi folks looking for an indian-like soup with spices, veggies, chicken - light, airy and not stuffy like regular American stews, this is the place for you. I must have passed this place hundreds of times, always thinking it was part of 'El Patron.' Any who, finally got around to ordering from here after they were on my list for awhile. I was waiting for the perfect 'soup day.' I ordered take out from here and the order was right on time. The Caldo Ix, which has shredded chicken, potatoes, carrots, corn, green beans, onion, cilantro + rice was hearty. The real knockout was the Caldo Tlalpeno Rojo, which was similar in ingredients, minus the rice and add in cheese, spices and garbanzos. It was delicious. I mixed it in with the Caldo IX! We also enjoyed the rosemary churros and there were even rosemary leaves alongside that made it feel healthier. The chocolate and caramel that accompanied it were pretty perfect. Absolutely loved this Guatemalan spot that has the best hot chocolates! Do yourself a favor and come here on a winter day, ordering one of their delicious hot chocolates and a nice soup to warm you up. Their soups and hot chocolates are the main drivers for this 5 star rating. We got the Xelaju and cinnamon almendrado hot chocolates. The almendrado had a smooth almond flavor throughout. The xelaju, also the Mayan name for Quetzaltenango (a city in Guatemala), is basically vanilla ice-cream on a thick bed of hot chocolate. The ice-cream cooled down and further sweetened the hot chocolate, perfect for those with a sweet tooth. Both were amazing and I can't wait to go back to try the rest of the hot chocolates on the menu. As for the dishes, I was in love with their Pepian soup/stew, which came in a bowl bigger than my face and was filled with hearty ingredients like chicken, carrots, potatoes, and rice. The dish also comes with blue corn tortillas. It was very filling to say the least. The cubano sandwich gets an honorable mention, perfectly tasty and went well with the soup. The side salad was a little bland, but the cubano alone did the trick for me. We got the crazy corn in a cup as an appetizer, which comes with cotija cheese and sour cream on the side for you to season based on your palate. If you are at all like me, you'd dump both into the bowl and not look back. Despite having chiles in it, this dish was rather mild in flavor, so probably won't order next time, but is very easy to share in larger parties. Heard Ix was the spot to check out in the area so ofc I had to venture out and try it. I loved the vibes and the interior of the space, and the staff was super friendly! The atmosphere was very lively so I feel like this would be a good spot for drinks and light food Since it was lunchtime, my friends split a soup (which btw is a huge serving) and got the hot cocoa. I got an egg sandwich which comes with a side salad (note you cannot swap out for fries as they don't serve those here). While the soup and the hot chocolates were delicious and rich, the sandwich was just alright. So if you do check out this spot I recommend opting for the soup instead. Ix, pronounced "eesh", is the jaguar in Mayan zodiac. Upon entry, the tropical jungle theme hits you with its bamboo walls and a giant jaguar mural. The restaurant is cute with a coffee bar on your left and a dining area with little colorful trinkets from Guatemala. Even their BLUE tortillas are served warm inside a handmade purse! And yes they have blue tortilla chips with the best black bean dip and hot sauce I've ever graced my tongue with. Forget the omelettes (they're great though), go for the soups! I had the Pepian, which some consider to be THE national dish of Guatemala, made from Guatemalan chile peppers (gives it a smoky and meaty flavor) and thickened with pumpkin seed. My bowl was filled with shredded chicken and large chunks of potatoes and carrots. It's bursting with flavor and warms the soul. The hot cacao drinks are pure cacao from Guatemala! I've tried both the original Ix and the lavender flavored one. I highly recommend going with the original! Nothing beats pure cacao. Service is also impeccable. Up until yesterday, I had no idea this spot had replaced Tip of the tongue. Nevertheless, this new café is phenomenal. Guatemalan inspired cuisine. Lovely touches in the decor like the menu design, tapestries on the table, paintings on the wall, a jaguar mural in the back, and the warm blue corn tortillas served with most dishes. The staff and service were the best part of our visit. I liked that they were all from South American. Service was warm and genuine. So many appealing items on the menu. Their mocha alone deserves its own review section. So rich and thick. I ordered the Rosemary mocha with almond milk. Loved it! And mind you, I'm usually a coffee person, hardly ever interested in mocha. But this was so worth it and satisfying. My husband, being healthy, got the mocha with hot water instead of milk and it still came out tasting great. We started out with a simple salad to share. It came in a huge portion size. ** THE THREE STARS ARE FOR THE SERVER ** If I only knew why restaurants feel like they have to deafen their customers... Four of us went to brunch here about a week ago. The food was fine and our waiter was a saint. We spent the entire meal though, trying to talk to each other and straining to hear what we were saying. There was a live band outside and they played, loud, throughout the entire meal. It was impossible to enjoy the food or the company this way. If that wasn't bad enough, there was ALSO a radio playing on top of the band! So the blasting noise came from two places and never let up. Frankly, it was a miserable time and I left with my head throbbing. So many places do this right now, this dumbed down way of eating, so much noise that you can't enjoy anything. Are managers afraid we might actually have a thought and think while we are in their establishment? My sympathies go to the folks who have to work in this mess. The food was ok, but not worth it. Their sandwiches are great, my favorite is the French onion dip. And the chicken dinner... absolutely amazing. There's more than enough food to bring some home for lunch tomorrow. But the real standout is the drinking chocolate. If you haven't had drinking chocolate before... you're in for a treat. Totally unique, totally delicious, like hot chocolate but a million times better. I'd recommend getting the children's size to start off, unless you're splitting with a friend.
