I love IYA's quality. The place is always comforting and clean. The service is always good. The most important part is the sushi is the best sushi I've had in Massachusetts so far. The flavors and quality of the sushi is so good. It's a bit pricey but I honestly don't mind because I think you get what you pay for where a lot of other sushi places charge the same prices for much lower quality sushi. Iya is generally a solid place to go for Sushi. However, their poke bowls are extremely underwhelming for what they charge. We ordered 2 different kinds of poke bowls from here and they literally were the smallest container of rice, 7-8 small chunks of (poor quality) salmon, with sprouts, and a tiny drizzle of sauce that wasn't even close to enough. I've had better poke bowls from prepared grocery store meals. They charged us $18/bowl for a tiny portion. When I called to provide feedback and request a refund I was met with an attitude from this girl who worked there who said "the general manager will call you back". Never received a call. Had my first meal from here in a while and it was disappointing. Had the Poke bowl with trio of fish and the fish was full of tough, hard to chew areas and poorly cut. The food is excellent, but service is lacking. Ordered ahead of time online with a forty five minute wait to pick up. When I arrived to pick up my food forty five minutes later, I was told by a rude young woman that "it was going to be at least ten minutes." That ten minutes was actually twenty five, for a total of one hour and ten minutes to get four rolls that are routinely made there. When I opened the boxes containing my rolls, they were haphazardly placed with wasabi smeared everywhere. Definitely not worth the $80+. This place is the only sushi place in downtown Amherst that I have continuously gone back to. It has a lot of options and a really cute, cozy atmosphere. The wait staff is always friendly and they also have a decent drink menu. I would definitely say Osaka in Northhampton has more options and better sushi, but for a place really close to campus, Iya is the best. The bumble crunch roll is 10/10, it has this garlic sauce on top and is my whole friend group's go-to. I would say their Philadelphia roll needs a little work and they are a little bit skimpy on the avocado in most of their rolls. I love their lunch specials also! read more

Great food and service. My good to order at this establishment is the Chicken Ramen and some scallion pancakes.. My only recommendation for improvement is to make sure the soda syrup to water ratio on the sisd dispenser is better. A number of times, the soda seems watered down. read more

Not only this, but I found a whole garlic clove and large piece of ginger in my bowl as well. Had a great time at IYA Sushi and Noodle Kitchen in Amherst! I've gotten takeout from here but had not dined in until last night. The ambiance is cozy and everything is very new looking. We ordered off of their mobile ordering system at our table which was super user friendly. We got the vegetable lo mein, katsu bao and two sushi rolls. Their sushi is super yummy and fresh. I'm very glad to see that IYA not only survived the pandemic shutdowns (through take-out orders) but also appeared to be thriving now that UMass has reopened for in-person classes - Amherst town center was bustling with students and parents! It's been a year-and-a-half since we ate there last and we looked forward to IYA's ramen. It did not disappoint despite the hiatus! My daughter had the Tokyo-style ramen and enjoyed it very much; my wife had their vegetarian ramen (which included a veggie broth ... and also an hard-boiled egg - which can be omitted if you let your server know) which she thought was one of the better veggie ramen she's had (it's hard to deliver that umami-ness with a vegetable-based broth). I saw a new type of ramen on the menu - roasted duck - and had to try that. It comprised of savory-sweet shredded duck meat, a tasty rich broth, and nicely springy noodles. Another one of my daughters had the poke bowl and said the fish was fresh and tasty. We also shared appetizers of their terrific seared cha-shu pork on a sizzling iron plate, with well-caramelized rice and a solid kimchee that cut the fattiness of the pork. However, both the fried scallion pancake and gyoza were somewhat bland and uninspired - stick with the pork and you'll be very happy with that. Service was both prompt and friendly. read more

Second time trying this place. First time I ordered the gyoza as an appetizer and was very disappointed as it tasted like it came from a generic grocery store freezer section. This time I ordered the pork belly boa's and thought the pork belly was good but the boa itself wasn't the best. Sushi was ordered both times and the same result as the appetizers, somewhat satisfied but also disappointed. Ordered the Tokyo style ramen spicy both times and was very happy with it. They seem to use the same broth for that ramen and the duck version as my friend ordered that one. Definitely worth it for the ramen but that's about it. I came by to try out their food for their opening, and it was pretty decent. I ordered a shrimp tempura roll, eel + avocado roll, and some kimchi for take-out. The kimchi looked and tasted subpar; it was hastily thrown into this brown takeout box with some long pieces of scallions on top. It just didn't have the kind of kick I was hoping to get from kimchi. The eel + avocado roll was good, with a good ratio between each of the ingredients. The shrimp tempura roll was very crunchy, though I felt like there was too much shrimp in comparison to the rest of the roll. Overall, I don't mind having stopped by, but I'm not particularly interested in trying their sushi again. Perhaps I will try their ramen some other day. read more

Uncomfortable experience using a gift card with the male manager. The phone website wasn't accepting the gift card so the manager had me get up from my table and pay for my food in total before being served any food at the table. I like to pay for my food after I am done eating and the tip follows afterwards. Felt like he told the kitchen staff to add bad eggs into the ramen just because I didn't pay a tip upfront before food is served. My interaction with him felt real off. The eggs were rancid, had a sour lemon taste to them which shouldn't be. Waitress provided new eggs that taste fine. I left her a tip for being helpful throughout my meal there. Great spot! I take my kids here once a month for ramen, and we are always delighted. For us, it's quite a drive, and well worth the extra effort. This place is nothing special. Food is unspectacular in terms of sushi and sashimi. The sashimi cut is a bit skimpy compared to other sushi places. The miso soup, not pictured, was really good though. The service was poor. I was not greeted when I entered. My server did not greet me either. She just gave me a cup of water and proceeded to ask for my order. The place was not busy, there were a few customers on a Tuesday afternoon. It honestly seemed like she didn't even want to be there in the first place. When I asked for my bill, she did not remove any empty plates. When I finally paid, she curtly said "have a nice rest of your day" and quickly rushed off before I could reply. I found her rude which made my dining experience uncomfortable. I also wished she checked up on people more often (like a previous reviewer mentioned). It's a bit of a hassle when you have to flag down your server. I gave her 20% tip out of generosity only. The decor and ambiance is great although IYA does not know what hospitality is. When I saw the Iya signage being put up, I was confused. Now after trying them twice I am still confused. This doesn't seem like a necessary addition to the Amherst restaurant selection. Amherst already scratches my itch for sushi with Arigato, and noodles with too many restaurants to name. Out of curiousity I tried a takeout order for dinner when they opened.The sashimi dinner was subpar, basically grocery store sushi, while the seaweed salad and tempura were perfectly serviceable. I felt underwhelmed, really. Today, I decided to give them another shot with an in-person sushi lunch. The time from order to food-on-table was amazing, and I would have expected that it was pre-made if I hadn't watched the chef prepare it behind the bar. Unfortunately, the fish quality DID seem pre-made like my first experience. At Arigato I feel bad about putting soy sauce on their salmon while at Iya the fish was bland without it. The price was reasonable for a lunch, and that along with the speed could make this place worth a quick stop. The only other place to get ramen around here is Kaiju, which is dinner-only. If you're interested in Iya, I would recommend sticking to the ramen. Service was fine to me, but they were visibly (and audibly) stressed about the quality of their waitstaff. Not a great look to be complaining about your own employees in front of customers. read more

I am sooo happy Iya branched out to Amherst. Seriously. Before they did it was only Arigato up the street that did decent sushi. Iya also offers some cool fusion dishes and my personal favorite, Poke! American sushi invented in Hawaii! Amherst has an amazing selection of Asian cuisine but I would totally put Iya at the top five in Amherst and they do have many things that are there own. Like no one does poke, their home style wonton soup is exactly what you want if you are sick, they don't hold back on the tea leaves in the tea. Really, it's a killer place. This is the worst ramen I have ever had. I ordered the tokyo style ramen because I saw a nice picture of it posted by another customer and thought this could not be wrong. Best ramen place in Amherst! My friend and I ordered the pork belly app starter, Tokyo Shio Ramen with added spiciness, and the flying tiger roll. The starter came out sizzling! Probably for this reason, the pork belly in the starter was a bit overdone, which led to a bacon-esque texture on the edges. We loved the flavor of the cooked kimchi with the rice and pork in the starter though! I liked the pork belly in the ramen more, as it was more juicy than crispy. The egg was nicely poached, and the noodles were the perfect chewiness. It also comes with bamboo, bean sprouts, and green onions. My only issue with the broth was that the spice overpowered the underlying flavor, so I couldn't really taste it. (My friend liked that the broth wasn't salty though!) We both enjoyed the flying tiger roll; the salmon was flavorful, balanced with crunchy cucumber and creamy avocado. The total was around $40 without tip...pretty reasonable for 2 entrees and a starter! Aesthetically, every dish looked amazing and insta-worthy, especially the poke bowls I saw being prepared. When entering IYA it was very clean and COVID-19 friendly. The service was very attentive and helpful. The waiter gave recommendations and was very uplifting. I don't usually eat sushi but when I saw the menu there was endless choices so I couldn't really go wrong. I don't like raw meat so the meatless options were great. I loved the food and drink choices. It was not too pricey either, a roll of sushi was around $6 so perfect for a broke college student.
